| body |  It's a funny thing when you talk to somebody about sleep. It seems like no matter how many people you asked there is a common theme. Everyone believes that they don't receive enough sleep. With sleep deprivation being a problem that's so common among people, why don't we have better ways of dealing with this? Sure, there are products that are often recommended to people such as melatonin and sound machines, but how effective are these remedies? My schedule can be pretty tough. I find myself getting up sometimes at 4 a.m. and not getting home until 9 or 10 at night. As you might have guessed, this can lead to some serious sleep deprivation problems. Like everyone else, I have always had complaints about needing more sleep during the week, but it wasn't until I started tracking my sleep that I was able to really put a bandaid on my sleep deprivation. I have to be honest, at first I was very skeptical on how tracking my sleep could really help me with my sleep deprivation. I thought “It's not data that I need, it's sleep!”. It wasn't until I had purchased a Fitbit for myself in order to track my steps did I really give sleep tracking a chance. I didn't originally by the Fitbit to track my sleep, but I found myself wearing it to bed and inadvertently tracking my sleep. I would twiddle around in the Fitbit app and then find myself looking at how many hours of sleep I got each night. Eventually I wanted to see if I could use this data somehow instead of letting it go to waste. What I found was tracking my sleep actually did help me figure out how much sleep deprivation I was actually suffering from. Lesson 1: My sleep deprivation was worse than I thought! Sure, the Fitbit probably isn't the best piece of technology to track your sleep. It uses an accelerometer and doesn't monitor your breathing or electrical brain waves, but it's great to give you a general guideline of how much sleep you're actually getting. What I found was that I usually spend at least one hour awake at night. So the five or six hours I thought I was getting was more like 4 to 5 hours. Currently the recommended sleep amount for my age is 7 to 9 hours. Sleeping 5 hours a night puts me at a 2 our deficit each night. By the end of the week this could lead to a total sleep deprivation amount of 10 hours! This is information that I wouldn't know if I didn't track my sleep.  Lesson 2: What the heck do I do with all this data So you probably have the same question that I had it first. What do you do with this information? It might seem like you're just torturing yourself by knowing the exact level of sleep deprivation you're actually suffering from, but with all aspects of my life, I think that knowing more is always for the better. You would never ignore your financial debt, right? Why would you do the same for your sleep debt?  There have been studies performed showing that sleep deprivation and sleep debt is something that can be repaid, but the first step is to know how much you owe. Once you have a quantifiable number, only then can start to figure out a plan to pay it off. Lesson 3: How I actually tackled my sleep deprivation So once I actually knew how much sleep debt I was actually faced with, I started researching on ways to pay this debt back. What I learned was that you can't just go on a sleeping binge on the weekends to pay back your sleep debt. Sleep deprivation actually takes time to treat. Plus, I knew that I wasn't going to be able to physically add 10 hours of sleep on the weekends anyways. There's no way that my body would ever let that happen. So what did I do? I started by adding 1 extra hour of sleep each night. This meant getting rid of that extra time spent watching YouTube videos or what not. This brought down my sleep debt from 10 hours a week to only 5. Covering those last 5 hours in the weekend would be a breeze. An just like that, sleep deprivation was no longer an issue. You might be thinking, of course the cure to sleep deprivation is sleep! But you have to remember though, you would never know how much sleep deprivation you were actually suffering from if you didn’t track your sleep at night. The key to tackling any situation, is to size it up first.  So how do I feel now? The answer is, I feel great!! Does this mean that I am never tired any more? Not at all! I still have days where I feel a little sluggish, but now I have a way of seeing if my sleep deprivation is the cause of that. I have a quantifiable number that I can help me make sure that I don't fall behind. I have found that my days have gotten a lot brighter, that I am much less irritable, and I'm much more productive during the day. So give it a try, track your sleep and you never know, maybe sleep deprivation maybe a thing of a past for you! |

"body": "\nIt's a funny thing when you talk to somebody about sleep. It seems like no matter how many people you asked there is a common theme. Everyone believes that they don't receive enough sleep. With sleep deprivation being a problem that's so common among people, why don't we have better ways of dealing with this? Sure, there are products that are often recommended to people such as melatonin and sound machines, but how effective are these remedies?\n\nMy schedule can be pretty tough. I find myself getting up sometimes at 4 a.m. and not getting home until 9 or 10 at night. As you might have guessed, this can lead to some serious sleep deprivation problems. Like everyone else, I have always had complaints about needing more sleep during the week, but it wasn't until I started tracking my sleep that I was able to really put a bandaid on my sleep deprivation.\n\nI have to be honest, at first I was very skeptical on how tracking my sleep could really help me with my sleep deprivation. I thought “It's not data that I need, it's sleep!”. It wasn't until I had purchased a Fitbit for myself in order to track my steps did I really give sleep tracking a chance. I didn't originally by the Fitbit to track my sleep, but I found myself wearing it to bed and inadvertently tracking my sleep. I would twiddle around in the Fitbit app and then find myself looking at how many hours of sleep I got each night. Eventually I wanted to see if I could use this data somehow instead of letting it go to waste. What I found was tracking my sleep actually did help me figure out how much sleep deprivation I was actually suffering from.\n\nLesson 1: My sleep deprivation was worse than I thought!\nSure, the Fitbit probably isn't the best piece of technology to track your sleep. It uses an accelerometer and doesn't monitor your breathing or electrical brain waves, but it's great to give you a general guideline of how much sleep you're actually getting. What I found was that I usually spend at least one hour awake at night. So the five or six hours I thought I was getting was more like 4 to 5 hours. Currently the recommended sleep amount for my age is 7 to 9 hours. Sleeping 5 hours a night puts me at a 2 our deficit each night. By the end of the week this could lead to a total sleep deprivation amount of 10 hours! This is information that I wouldn't know if I didn't track my sleep.\n\n\n\nLesson 2: What the heck do I do with all this data\nSo you probably have the same question that I had it first. What do you do with this information? It might seem like you're just torturing yourself by knowing the exact level of sleep deprivation you're actually suffering from, but with all aspects of my life, I think that knowing more is always for the better. You would never ignore your financial debt, right? Why would you do the same for your sleep debt?\n\n\n\nThere have been studies performed showing that sleep deprivation and sleep debt is something that can be repaid, but the first step is to know how much you owe. Once you have a quantifiable number, only then can start to figure out a plan to pay it off.\n\nLesson 3: How I actually tackled my sleep deprivation\nSo once I actually knew how much sleep debt I was actually faced with, I started researching on ways to pay this debt back. What I learned was that you can't just go on a sleeping binge on the weekends to pay back your sleep debt. Sleep deprivation actually takes time to treat. Plus, I knew that I wasn't going to be able to physically add 10 hours of sleep on the weekends anyways. There's no way that my body would ever let that happen.\n\nSo what did I do? I started by adding 1 extra hour of sleep each night. This meant getting rid of that extra time spent watching YouTube videos or what not. This brought down my sleep debt from 10 hours a week to only 5. Covering those last 5 hours in the weekend would be a breeze. An just like that, sleep deprivation was no longer an issue. You might be thinking, of course the cure to sleep deprivation is sleep! But you have to remember though, you would never know how much sleep deprivation you were actually suffering from if you didn’t track your sleep at night. The key to tackling any situation, is to size it up first.\n\n\n\nSo how do I feel now?\nThe answer is, I feel great!! Does this mean that I am never tired any more? Not at all! I still have days where I feel a little sluggish, but now I have a way of seeing if my sleep deprivation is the cause of that. I have a quantifiable number that I can help me make sure that I don't fall behind. I have found that my days have gotten a lot brighter, that I am much less irritable, and I'm much more productive during the day. So give it a try, track your sleep and you never know, maybe sleep deprivation maybe a thing of a past for you!",
