The film is directed\nby Ryan Coogler , who co-wrote the screenplay\nwith Joe Robert Cole, and stars Chadwick\nBoseman as T'Challa / Black Panther, alongside\nMichael B. Jordan , Lupita Nyong'o , Danai Gurira ,\nMartin Freeman , Daniel Kaluuya , Letitia Wright ,\nWinston Duke , Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker ,\nand Andy Serkis . In Black Panther, T'Challa\nreturns home as king of Wakanda but finds his\nsovereignty challenged by a new adversary, in a\nconflict with global consequences.\nSeeking to address the dearth of black\ncharacters in comics, Lee and Kirby created\nT’Challa, a member of the royal family of\nthe fictional African country of Wakanda.\nWakanda was depicted as a peculiar mix of\nfuturistic technology and traditional life, a\ndichotomy produced by the presence in the\ncountry of Vibranium, a rare and nearly\nindestructible meteoric ore. After the death\nof his father at the hands of the villainous\nUlysses Klaw, T’Challa claimed the throne\nas well as the mantle of the Black Panther.\nUpon becoming the Black Panther, T’Challa\nwas exposed to a mystical herb that\nenhanced his strength and agility to near-\nsuperhuman levels. After meeting the\nFantastic Four , T’Challa decided his powers\nwould be put to best use in the service of\nall humanity, although Wakanda traditionally\nhad been closed to the outside world, and\nso he flew off to New York, leaving his\npeople behind.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Black Panther joined the Avengers in\n1968, where he became a mainstay for the\nnext several years. Although the character\npredated the revolutionary political\norganization of the same name, Marvel\nbriefly changed the Black Panther’s name to\nthe Black Leopard in an attempt to\ndissociate the two. A short time later he\nwas back to being the Black Panther again,\nand in 1973 he headlined his own book for\nthe first time. The “Panther’s Rage” story\narc ran for two years in Jungle Action , a\nseries written by Don McGregor and drawn\nfor the most part by the African American\nartist Billy Graham. Reflecting the times’\ninterest in African roots and black\nconsciousness in general, the strip returned\nT’Challa to a Wakanda riven by infighting\nand sedition, where he managed to balance\nsuperheroics with musings on colonialism\nand democracy. For the duration of the\ntale, the strip featured an all-black cast,\nsomething that had never before been\nattempted in mainstream superhero\ncomics, and the innovations continued in a\nlater story, which saw the Panther take on\nthe Ku Klux Klan .\nPoor sales prompted Marvel to cancel\nJungle Action before the Klan story was\nfinished, and it was replaced in 1977 with a\nnew Black Panther title by Jack Kirby. This\nnew direction was as far from the gritty\nrealism of McGregor’s tales as it is\npossible to imagine, as it featured a time-\ntraveling frog statue said to belong to King\nSolomon, the Yeti, and a group of\nWakandan nobles known as the Black\nMusketeers. This title too was short-lived.\nSporadic appearances over the next two\ndecades kept the Black Panther in the\nMarvel firmament, but he was increasingly\nmarginalized. Miniseries in 1988 and 1991\nwere solid, if unspectacular, attempts at\nrevitalizing what was effectively a lapsed\nfranchise. The first tackled apartheid , and\nthe second dealt with the Panther’s search\nfor his mother, but neither led to anything\nsubstantial. With black characters no longer\na comics novelty and with role models such\nas the characters of Milestone Comics—\nwhich had more relevance to their readers\nthan a wealthy African king—it seemed as if\nthe Panther’s time had passed.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 1998 writer Christopher Priest\nreintroduced the hero as part of the slightly\nmore adult “Marvel Knights” line, in a\ncritically acclaimed series that continued\nuntil 2003. For this reinvention, a now\naging T’Challa returns to the urban jungle of\nNew York in a deftly written political thriller\nthat balances intrigue with no small amount\nof humour.
