| body | This week-end Coachella has started. As always, those who didn’t make it are following the happenings on live stream and crying over ice cream on how miserable it is not to be there. For us, it has quite a different feeling. For us, Coachella is almost a big social experiment the music industry is playing with the public. What are the insights to take from the single most cool event worldwide (maybe second only to the Burning Man), and what does it say about the music industry and being a musician in 2018. 1.How to become the queen of the music industry. Coachella confirmed Beyonce as the queen of music. She just is. There’s no but, no if. It’s been a few years she’s hands down dominating any possible channel for which you can measure musical success. She influences culture as much as a political figure. If all of a sudden she would say: “from now on, all of my fans have to wear rainbow colored attire”, trust me, they would. This is how powerful she is. At this Coachella, she threw in the mix a bit of everything: Jay Z and their romantic drama, old Destiny’s Child reunion and the most amazing performance it has ever been seen at a festival (according to literally everybody who has seen it). So what’s the outtake? Long story short, musicians can become such a big influence on culture that they can move the music industry single-handedly. The question is, are your fans really yours? 2.Even big musicians have mental breakdowns. Yes, the Weekend cried on stage at this year’s Coachella. About this I’m sincerely conflicted. I don’t know if it shows great emotional attachment to his songs or if he’s just overwhelmed by the scale of things. Either or, The Weeknd remains a top name. However, Twitter is conflicted on the topic too, and it seems a “make it or break it” situation. What that says about the music scene? That strong emotions are a double edged sword. If authentic, they could bring you to even more notoriety. If not, you might crash your career with a single cry. Always remember, the internet can be a really cruel environment when it comes to celebrity chasing. So be careful, Icarus. 3. Hip Hop is the most represented genre. Since quite some years, hip hop has become the most listened genre on any music platform. Last year, Spotify released an annual statistics report claiming that hip hop music listeners has grown by 74% since the year before. It is above pop music by far. This year’s Coachella reiterates this fact, by bringing in a plethora of hip hop acts with stellar followings. From the above mentioned Beyonce and The Weekend, to Eminem, Cardi B and SZA. It seems that the real heavy hitters are those who revolve within this genre. Quite an insight to think how far hip hop has gone, from its late 70’s debut as a social and political rampage from the ghettos, to making “pop numbers” less than 40 years later. What’s the lesson here? Stick to what you believe in. It will pay back sooner or later. And with big numbers. 4.There’s a lot of semi-unknown artists still to be discovered. I was surprised at how many artists I still have never heard of, which made it to Coachella this year. I tend to have a pretty big knowledge on up and coming artists, so whenever some of them get into a world renowned stage such as Coachella, it gives a feeling that the music industry isn’t just about acclaimed artists and how many tickets can they sell. This goes to say that you shouldn’t drop your guitar, quit your piano lessons or stop producing because nobody listens. Grit is key. If you don’t go all in on your passion, you won’t see the rewards of it. What is our contribution: Here at Volareo, we believe it should be easier for musicians and music fans to have a relationship. We know there’s many of them who are very talented but unheard. Musicoin is a platform for those who want to survive while they’re climbing up the ladder of the music environment and we’re backing them up with the technology of a smart speaker to fly (“volare” in Italian) and not struggle. "body": "This week-end Coachella has started. As always, those who didn’t make it are following the happenings on live stream and crying over ice cream on how miserable it is not to be there. For us, it has quite a different feeling. For us, Coachella is almost a big social experiment the music industry is playing with the public. What are the insights to take from the single most cool event worldwide (maybe second only to the Burning Man), and what does it say about the music industry and being a musician in 2018.\n\n1.How to become the queen of the music industry.\n\nCoachella confirmed Beyonce as the queen of music. This is how powerful she is. | body | There’s quite a heated discussions over income inequality. The statistics are starting to become dazzling in terms of numbers, There’s big revenues and profits to be made, in almost every industry. The enabler of all this is technology. What is called “the second machine age” has permitted every industry to move money towards very few (the infamous 1%) and left the remaining 99% battling for a slice of the cake. The music landscape acts in the same exact way. Not for nothing is called ‘the music business’. But what else has changed within the music industry thanks to technology? Mainly, the way musicians get discovered. Any artist has the power to go from a Soundcloud niche to platinum selling, within a fair amount of time. There’s a couple of tricks you can learn from those who did sell a million copies. It isn’t easy. You’re a just a fish in the ocean. But here’s what you can learn from that: 1. Understand your fans, and then connect with them on a personal level Fans don’t really buy your music, they buy you. They buy your story, your message and how your personal struggles have affected your music. It pays to be known for something unique. The only way to do that is by getting that message across to as many people possible. In the most genuine way possible. They’ll love you if you give them love back. For example, you remember when Taylor Swift invited her most hardcore fans to her house, made them cookies and then made them listen to a premiere of her new album? Exactly. If you thought that posting updates on your social media channels was enough, then think again. If you wanna make it in the ocean of the music industry you need a step forward on the relationship you have between you and your fans. Nobody gives anything for nothing. 2. Knowing a lot about music doesn’t mean you know a lot about the music business It is indeed a common belief that if you know how to make music you will, by causality, be successful in the music business. That’s not really the case. Instead, the very fact that you know basically nothing about how the music business works, makes you depend on external parties for your career. You rely on other people’s expertise to fill in the lack of your own. Every extra hand you ask for to help you publish, distribute, brand, etc. will want a cut of your income. Take example from Frank Ocean. He managed to maneuver himself out of his previous record label (Def Jam records) so that he could publish his stunning new album Blond independently. The outcome? He made a million $ in one week. Not so bad, huh? 3. Be bold. Pull the plug if you feel you’re being mistreated You’ll learn sooner than later that nobody is really in it for your own interest. Actually, it’s very likely that your own interest clashes with theirs. So you have to make sure that you take ownership of what you create. In the end is your music. Have the upper hand in any saying and, if you feel that you don’t anymore, be bold enough to not shake hands for the deal. When the Radiohead’s singer Thom Yorke published his new album Amok with his other band Atoms for Peace on Spotify, he soon realised that there was something fishy about it. As a matter of fact, he pulled the plug soon after, making Spotify (and all the other streaming platforms) shiver of insecurity. He then proceeded to link with a start-up company called SoundHalo, which permits users to download video of their live shows. Previously, he released the album ‘In Rainbows’ on his own website, on a ‘pay as you want’ deal. The outcome? Most of people took it, of course, for free. But for those who paid, since there was no gatekeeper in between the fans and Radiohead, they made more income than any other album. In conclusion, the business of music is a hard knock life. However, if you do your homework and are prepared for what is to come, it could be smoother than you think. Mostly, you can actually make a buck out of it. Here at Volareo we believe in the genuine force music brings to each one of us. If you think the same click here and get weekly content on the topic. |

| body | Let’s talk about music publishers. They are the unknown, driving forces behind the music industry. One of the most famous music publishers is Sony / ATV Music. Their history illustrates exactly why it is time for a direct connection between artist and fan. Here’s a behind the scenes story of how a Michael Jackson became the publisher of the Beatles and ruined a friendship between pop legends. Music publishers for dummies Fundamentally, music publishers connect musicians to the outside world. They connect songs to media and advertising agencies. By doing so, they earn money from a split of the royalties that the copyright of said song generates whenever anybody streams or performs it. Only fair, right? Well, these billion-dollar companies are mainly behind the scenes. They are not known for their socially responsible entrepreneurship. Nobody knows precisely how royalty collection works. Nobody. So, when people don’t understand, that’s when you screw them off. The same happens in any white collar job. They speak gibberish to confuse you and then get their hands in your wallet because you don’t know better. Simple. It even happens, sometimes, that owners of music publishing company pretend to be a composer of a song, so that they can benefit even more from the copyright. Beatles vs Michael Jackson: let the fight begin If you thought that copyright fraud would be the only chapter in the book of music publishers: this story is about to get crazier. Paul McCartney recorded the rights of the songs he wrote, together with John Lennon, with Northern Songs ltd. Think of ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, ‘Help’, ‘Norwegian Wood’ and ‘Yellow Submarine’. This catalog was in the hands of Beatles manager Brian Epstein and music publisher Dick James, who, in turn, sold this catalog to ATV Music Publishing in 1968. But, here’s where the plot thickens. At one point Michael Jackson stepped in and bought ATV for a whopping 47.5 million $. The FD describes the situation as follows: “In the early 1980s, McCartney told pop star Michael Jackson during a recording session that a lot of money could be made with the management of music rights. Jackson put this advice right in his ears and bought ATV Music in 1985 for $ 47.5 mln $. This made the two pop icons, bitter enemies. Understandably so, as it basically meant that Jackson was making money for the music that they made.” Well, now we all know why, two years later Jackson entitled his album “Bad”. And the winner is… In 1995 Sony bought half of the ATV Music Publishing shares. They paid about $ 97 million for it. In 2016, Sony bought the remaining 50 percent from Jackson’s estate, for about $ 750 million. This made the rights worth about 750 percent more in twenty years. In prospective, 750 % means that he earned almost a billion dollar for something that is not even his. McCartney eventually settled the case for the rights of the Beatles songs. What exactly has been agreed between Sony / ATV Music and the ex-Beatles has not been announced. What does it all mean? The above anecdote is interesting. Yes, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are very appealing figures. The fact that they are in conflict makes it almost a mythological story. But unfortunately this is all true. But the real problem is not even that Jackson made insane amount of money, in a legal way, for literally just owning other people intellectual property. The Beatles are not starving, nor Michael didn’t have enough money. The REAL problem is that this happens every time. With every music publisher, in every country, with every musician on earth. Don’t you feel a bit of unfairness knowing that? Somebody is owning the creative ideas of somebody else, because the other doesn’t understand ‘music industry gibberish’ and making mountains of money out of it. Think about it. |

| body | Content consumerism: the digital age economy. We are all consumers of content. Even if we don’t want it, it’s just all over the place to be ignored. Call it entertainment, advertisement, or what you want. That’s all it really is, content. Most of it it’s quite annoying and dull. None of us was ever delighted to see for the umpteenth time the Audi ad on a Youtube video. But that’s the way to get it for free. The idea is this: some very creative people generate very appealing content, a lot of people look at it for free but, since the creative didn’t generate it at no costs, he has to put an ad in the middle to get paid. The circle closes. The consumer gets free content and annoying ads. The creator gives free content but gets paid by a company. The company latches the popularity of the creator with one of their products. Simple. The hook strategy. It seems it is only of advantage for everybody in the stake, right? Well, there’s a twist. You remember that time you went to a perfumery and they gave you a free sample? You were so hooked in that wonderful scent that you seriously considered buying the 60 euro bottle. Isn’t it? The same happens with any type of entertainment or service. There’s always either a free trial for a couple of months, or you can get a ‘light’ version. The goal is always to get you hooked and, only then, make you pay for it. It works. Go look for how many things you’ve subscribed for just because it was free and then got charged, after you’ve forgotten to unsubscribe. Selling the unsellable. Giving the unquestionable. What’s the problem with this system? Well, it just makes everything disposable. Let me tell you a little story. Mr. King Gillette was a frustrated inventor before he had a fantastic idea while shaving. It goes like this: “What if, instead of maintaining your very expensive blade for a long time, we could have a disposable one for almost nothing?” It worked. He started with soldiers and then the attitude was taken with them, in times of peace. Now, I’m not bashing on making razors disposable but, when content — more precisely music — follows the same way of being sold, distributed, published and ‘consumed’, I’m rather concerned. Summer hits: the cash cows of the music industry. Have you noticed how much you end up listening to a summer hit in those three months? To nausea! That is the way for music distributors to earn the big bucks. More simply, as follow: forget about talent, artistry and technique. Take something catchy and polish it to perfection. Then, literally throw it out to the highest amount of channels and media platforms with unbelievable frequency. Let people get hooked, dance till sunrise with it and then get tired of it. Once that has happened, restart the whole process all over. The result? Music, as any other type of content becomes disposable. Nobody listens to Jimi Hendrix, everybody listens to ‘Hippy vibes playlists’. Nobody listens to A Tribe Called Quest, everybody listens to ‘I love 80’s Hip Hop’. It just looses its meaning, its energy, its real significance. They made it plasticized and shining. But as they say, not all that glitters is gold. |

| body | A(m) I a musician? AI creating music: a dystopian future? That tune in your head — is it built from bits of a radio hit? No, perhaps it’s a piece of your own composition: maybe you’re a musician! What if that slinky hook came from a scary, anonymous AI — does that make you any less of an artist? The world said hello to Hello World by ‘SKYGGE’ at the beginning of the year, from ‘Flow Machines’, a composition project led by AI researcher, Francois Pachet. The album was touted as being the world’s first AI album, but also featured a handful of humans, including dance-pop star Kiezsa. Skygge incidentally means shadow in Danish — fitting with the sentiment of many that the AI composition landscape is a murky marshland, with deep ponds for real musicians to disappear into. As time goes on though, more and more AI startups are popping up, and more and more established acts are swimming in those ponds. Shiny neo-pop stars, Years & Years, recently created several new mood-based versions of their latest release (Sanctify) with UK startup AI Music. The alternatives were finished in a rapid 10 minutes, and while the original remains a human creation, the remixes are a collaboration between mortal and artificial entity. The man and the machine: opposites collide. A person’s ability to relate to a musician crops up as a frequent concern in this area — AI-constructed remixes are perhaps therefore a good middle-ground for critics. An AI could indeed mimic a Rolling in the Deep, but without the backstory of the likes of Ms. Adkins’, would the same strength of reaction be provoked in the audience? After all, we’re not (yet) in a place where Her-esque creations are giving interviews recounting the deets of the break-up behind their banger, or performing Tiny Desk concerts. Who’s to say that they couldn’t in the near future though? Musical marriages between man and machine are not so new however, with automation, for example, entering the relationship many years ago, but despite drum machines being an integral part of many genres, flesh and bone drummers are still in abundance. The feeling of the sticks in the palm and the vibration of the drum skin echoing up the arm have yet to be cloned. Speaking of cloning, to help birth the sounds trapped in the head, Vochlea, headed by George Philip Wright, comes to the rescue. Make a trumpet-sounding melody with your mouth, and the smart mic brings you a trumpet singing your melody on your DAW, shaving precious time off the prod’ process, allowing time for even more creation. Another time-consumer is writers’ block. That’s where companies like Second Brain come in: their lyric generator RAPGOD, offers a helping hand to the struggling artist, exhausted from touring maybe (AIs don’t burn out, or least not as humans do). Should we let robots make hits? When help from AI is not the defining feature of a track, it presents itself as more easily palatable. After all, ‘in the style of …’ music, created by real people, tends to have limited appeal. Since many AIs need to be fed with fodder in order to pick out patterns and broaden its catalogue of influences, a lack of originality becomes likely. Humans, on the other hand, don’t have to follow the rulebook. Göran Andersson of ‘Trackd’, a music creation and collaboration app, does not believe in a ‘hit formula’. Indeed, what makes a hit is complex — there are a whole host of underlying cultural and political factors which play a supporting role in a track’s potential success, and these are often embodied (in a very physical sense) in an artist. AI has nonetheless reared its robotic head, as the latest technological development in music production, opening the studio doors to those previously locked out, and as such, democratising the landscape. It should also be noted that many of those creating AI composition technology are in fact composers themselves, with a desire to both help others and make their own lives easier. It may therefore be time to think about putting another producer’s chair in your own studio. |

| body | **Streaming systems and record labels: let's get the facts straight** Do you remember that time when Taylor Swift was not on Spotify? Everybody was mad about it. The motivation behind it was that she figured that a lot of the agreements on streaming platforms undermined musicians over their royalties. The streaming platform gets some, the record label gets the other chunk (UMG made 4,5 million $ a day in 2017), and musicians are left with crumbles. https://steemitimages.com/DQmUYQB3RzhKzEbYxGaDYikfU2b3JUfT82hbLqL9MHbYYSf/image.png Taylor Swift has recently joined Spotify again In fact, musician’s income has been spiralling downwards since, and it’s getting worse as streaming grows. It simply pays them too little. For them, to have the US minimum wage (1260 $), it takes 1,177, 021 streams. Basically, you need to be a fairly famous musician to be able to make a McDonald’s employee salary. And, with the breaking news that Spotify has just gone public and is giving its investors a huge payout in market shares on Wall Street, it’s no wonder that musicians are pointing their finger at them and looking for alternatives. It is true that, the “all you can stream” business model came about as an answer to music piracy, when the music industry was facing a crisis. There was indeed a big problem to solve: “how do we get users to pay for music when they could easily download it everywhere, anywhere, illegally and for free” The opening of Spotify's stock cam along with their nation's flag. **Spotify and the problem with illegal downloads.** The only answer possible was, stream all you can for a fixed low fee. No worries about piracy, low mp3 quality, and the threat of viruses anymore. Pay 10 $ a month, and have all the music you want, simple and straightforward. Perfect, right? In fact, consumers bought it at increasing numbers and since then, music labels revenues hit record numbers over digitalisation. Mainstream users were no longer hooked on the “illegal & free” model. They loved Spotify and swore by it. The question then is: “problem solved, right?” Well, Spotify is not really the villain. With illegal downloads musicians were paid nothing whereas now they’re at least paid crumbles. That’s a small step forward at least. So potentially, the glitch in the Matrix is that some consumers won’t care, just like whenever there’s a street musician performing, not everyone stops to listen. Nor tip. A big portion still does, and increasingly so. For those of us who love music, who do stay and listen, and tip because we appreciate the music, shouldn’t there be an alternative. Blockchain technology is about to revolutionise the music industry **Volareo and blockchain: the alternative to a rigged system.** Well, there is a whole new movement coming up, fueled by the revolution of blockchain technology. It allows the process to be fair, transparent and exciting. Big names are behind it. For example, Hardwell, Imogen Heap, Matt Sorum (former Guns N’ Roses drummer) have all released music on blockchain. Companies like Musicoin, who are the first worldwide streaming platform based on blockchain, with over 1500 artists (and growing) under their belt, giving around 0.01 $ per stream to the artists, against the 0.007 of Spotify. Here at Volareo, we’re backing up their streaming platform with a top notch speaker designed to make music lovers and musicians one entity. Basically, it is as if your favorite artist is playing in your living room. You could tip him with a clap or cheer him thanks to speak recognition technology and perhaps most importantly the whole band gets paid fairly and equally thanks to smart contracts technoloy. "body": "**Streaming systems and record labels: let's get the facts straight**\nDo you remember that time when Taylor Swift was not on Spotify? Everybody was mad about it. The motivation behind it was that she figured that a lot of the agreements on streaming platforms undermined musicians over their royalties. The streaming platform gets some, the record label gets the other chunk (UMG made 4,5 million $ a day in 2017), and musicians are left with crumbles. \n\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmUYQB3RzhKzEbYxGaDYikfU2b3JUfT82hbLqL9MHbYYSf/image.png\nTaylor Swift has recently joined Spotify again\n\nIn fact, musician’s income has been spiralling downwards since, and it’s getting worse as streaming grows. There was indeed a big problem to solve: “how do we get users to pay for music when they could easily download it everywhere, anywhere, illegally and for free”\n\n\nThe opening of Spotify's stock cam along with their nation's flag.\n\n\n**Spotify and the problem with illegal downloads.**\nThe only answer possible was, stream all you can for a fixed low fee. They loved Spotify and swore by it.\n\nThe question then is: “problem solved, right?” Well, Spotify is not really the villain. | body | For immediate release: 13th March 2018 Austin, TX: Today at SXSW, Netherlands music technology startup Volareo and London based German producer & labelmanager Karl Goedicke announced the launch of BLCKCHN Records, the first record label focussed on releasing music for which the rights are managed on the blockchain. During the launch event, BLCKCHN Records founder Karl said: “By managing the music rights on the blockchain, we can ensure a fully transparent way of tracking plays, revenue split and payouts for all parties involved.” Volareo founder Nick Yap continued “Over 50 artists have already joined us, including Grammy nominated artists and producers, showing the demand for a transparent label is the way to go.” The team behind BLCKCHN Records has amassed over 55 years of experience in the music and technology industry. Having released multiple number one hits, the founders deeply feel the pain of the whole music industry. “I’ve seen a tendency where it became harder and harder for artists to make a living from doing what they loved most. By starting BLCKCHN Records, we are bringing full transparency of what a label actually does for artists and visibility over how it pays out for both parties.” Find out more and sign up for updates on www.volareo.live. | body | Wise words @musicblockchain. I think number 3 is the most important. Many musicians spend a little too much time online and neglect the live music world. The blockchain does bring some exiting possibilities though so I'm all for it. Now back to practice. |

| body | # The musicians connection with their fans Think about it... When was the last time you truly connected with the people that love your content and when you did, when was the last time they were able to respond? The streaming world created a large barrier for a true physical connection between fans and musicians. Music is about sharing, loving and creating together. Lets see how we come back to that. ## 1. Social groups The voice of someone who presses play on all your songs should heard. A core group of music fans can say a lot about the way people feel when listening to your songs. Get a group together of 20 of your favourite, most hardcore fans and add 10 new listeners to that. Do it on Linkedin, Facebook or Whatsapp. Whatever suits your preference. Talk to them like you are just jamming out with them. Connecting with them on a 1 on 1 level. It is a great way to interact with your fans while creating a true bond with them. ## 2. Livestreaming Livestreaming is the greatest opportunity musicians have right now. Truely jam out with your fans and get new ones. Livestreaming not only gives you the opportunity to be creative around your fans but it is also heavily boosted by all social platforms. What does this mean I hear you ask? This means that the algorithm of say facebook will be more likely to boost you to the top of the newsfeed getting YOU more fans! ## 3. Concerts with fans Please don't forget about the offline world! People often forget that musicians are music lovers themselves. Weird right? But think about how you see your favourite artist, they are almost godlike. Become normal by annoucing that you are going to concert with your entourage. This allows the fans to meet you while you can enjoy your passion from the other side. Levelling you out with your fans! Sure this won't work for the 30 million copy selling artist. Although he/she could simply do a q&a jam sessions with fans before the start of the concert. It is all about strengthening the connection after all. ## 4. Blockchain Yes, it comes back to blockchain again! It just works well, we can't help it. Blockchain allows for a more direct connection because it eliminates any middlemen. Direct transactions between you and your fans. This works for music, merch and concert tickets. But also potentially the other way around if you want to give back to your fans. Also, the sign of appreciation we know, a press of play, could change to direct tipping with products like Volareo. This strengthens the bond! Sounds good? Sign up to our newsletter [here](www.volareo.live). |

| body | It certainly was an interesting development when they announced it. The challenge will be to get people to pay for something that doesn't stream mainstream artists nor do any of the things that the Alexa et al do. However I have heard one of their Ambassadors talk about the possibility of paying fans in MC for listening to music as well as paying the artists. If they can make that happen then maybe fans can buy the speaker with the MC. Then we have something exciting! |
