Our thoughts, actions, beliefs, all evolve into new phenomena depending on the external factors that directly and indirectly affect us. However, in this sea of uncertainty and transformation, how does domination look like? How can power be maintained through the metamorphosis that is society?\n\nDomination of a population is achieved through coercion, thought a physical force that contains peoples actions but not their mind. To contain and to neutralize the capacity of the mind of those dominated, the controlling class has to have the complete right to physical and symbolic violence, both which guarantee the continuity of the current system. \n\n![CBC.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfDvdng86GcptEcRu3knHfLVwDavEceF5orEKLtB5nw7z/CBC.jpg)\n\nHere I will focus on symbolic violence, a topic I feel has not received the proper attention it needs today. Symbolic violence, unlike physical violence, requires a degree of consent. Symbolic violence is the means through which the \"correct\", the \"truth\", and the \"normal\" are established and if the dominated class does not accept it, then it cannot be entrenched. \n\nSo how is it accepted? The established truth is diffused through different mediums who's sole purpose is to educate those dominated. The educational system, religious institutions, and the mass media all have the task of shaping our perspective on what's right or wrong, how we should behave, and how we should think. As you can see,  when one agrees to abide by the rules perpetuated by these mediums of education, one has given consent to establishing them, aiding the dominating class. \n\nSo that is domination in modern societies. It has evolved from just controlling the body to controlling the mind and if we are not conscious of it, we will loose our ability to identify it, making us more and more dominated.",

Freedom for me is being free from fear, frustration, codependency, blame, shame and poor-me attitudes. I feel free when I am my best friend that loves everything he does :) no need for gig economy.       "body": "![download.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYWGc8WhuKcCqJfgfz7Pza4wLZjGB87c2kniVKvPtGtEu/download.jpg)\n\nWhat does it mean to be free?\n Is it to be able to choose what you want to do?\n Is it being able to decide what type of life you have? \n\nI was watching one of Slavoj Zizek's talks and he brought up a very keen observation. The topic in question is what is known as the \"Gig economy\". Basically, an economy based on the effects of offshoring and other Neoliberal great ideas and actions. Due to the erosion of the manufacturing sector in the States, people have been taking a series of short-term, unstable jobs. It is not uncommon for someone to consistently move from job to job every year or so, moving from gig to gig, as they try to make ends meet. The idea here is to not be a typical full-time employee with benefits and all, but to be a but a temporary freelance contract worker drifting around waiting for the next task. It is LITERALLY the complete opposite  to the strong labor sector during the post-WWII Keynesian years. The idea is not sold as that though, and that's where the issue arrises.\n\n![gig-economy-eployment.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmX8Xqsqk76ybb2NGswwf87Y4W9g2FLMdkCkHJAcc7AXAU/gig-economy-eployment.png)  \n\n\nThis is Zizek's point. The idea of the gig economy is sold as a system in which you can move around, try new jobs, reinvent yourself every year or two, not be tied down to one place, no long term obligation. Freedom is the main theme here. However, is it freedom? Is instability really freedom?\n\nI don't think so and neither does Zizek. He warns about ideologies that are sold to us under the name of freedom but in reality are just another way of binding us into the current economic system. The problem with this is that we are tricked, deceived into believing we are living in modernity but in reality we are no different from any other society in which its people are explicitly forced to live a certain way in order to comply to the ways of the economical system.",

How is it then, that we consistently look for that other half of ourselves? How is it that we center our lives and focus on finding that significant other?\n\n![download-1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfYndzDV7VjzUcZ2pGcsLZ3YCG5mv7AX6Cx1ATeASpFKV/download-1.jpg)\n\nSchopenhauer gives credit to our will to live, or wille zum leben, which fuels our desire to have children for the continuity of the species. This will to live is the force behind our quest for that significant other, that in our minds will bring us happiness. He claims that this is the reason why we fall in love with people whom we would have never been friends with or feel attracted to people whom we are clearly incompatible with. \n\nClearly this is a very negative view of love, striping away human reason from it and comparing us to breeding animals. It might even be a tempting explanation to why some of us might have \"terrible taste\" when looking out for partners. However, our faults in love cannot merely be blamed on biology. It would be quiet comforting to blame the beast within for our shortcomings in love, it would remove all our personal responsibilities from our shoulders. We would be able to shift our focus away from our insecurities, impatience, jealousy and claim that it was our \"natural tendency\" which lead to such defects. \n\nIn the end, Schopenhauer did shed light on a very important aspect of love and that is impulse. Just like animals, we follow our impulses. When we think that we've found the one, we go for it. We don't really question whether we should have strong attraction towards a certain individual, we just love. As humans we haven't yet learned how to deal with our animal impulses and Schopenhauer reminds us that.",

This means that our perception of what is expected of us, of how we are supposed to act, of what is acceptable and unacceptable for us, is set by our social relations. The idea of grouping based on the characteristics of wealth, family name, inheritance, etc are replaced by where you went to school, the type of music you hear, what you eat, or what sports you play. Classes emerge from a web of relations and these relations are what are set your role as either one that has power or one that is seeking power in the respective field. \n\n![download-1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmboSZXbA6PMRicCBqCtG6pXQYbqGZYqfodQbRFrwvUXYN/download-1.jpg)\n \nYour actions are what determine your path and destination in life. If we are really bound to act and think accordingly to our role in our field then that questions the idea of a free will. Of course, this is nothing new. The battle between our freedom to choose our path and our predetermined mindset of how to act have been debated for a long time. There are some that argue that we are the captains of or own ships, that if we REALLY want something, we will go and get it. On the contrary, there are those who argue that not all of us can equally wish since our thoughts are confined to our role in our field, or society, and if our thoughts cannot conceive such wishes or deem such actions acceptable, then we will not act even though others might. \n\n![download-2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUX8mM6i4cfVSA9tPbjTHfkWcip7QcU5ayE6GUkPjC2A7/download-2.jpg)\n\nI argue that the balance lies within each individual. Therefore we must be alert of ourselves and really question what we believe in and how we act. I can't be one to judge, I do it all the time, however, it is quiet interesting to try to see why we are so obsessed with our mini computers. \n\nA very interesting take on why we are so captivated by the screen is that we are not so much interested in what we are looking at, but rather we are trying to find a way to divert our attention away from ourselves. We are looking at a shiny screen to avoid looking into our reality. Why look directly at your life, why look into your failures, your flaws, your thoughts, when you can look at  someone else's edited life.\n\nAs a college student I can definitely see the validity in this argument. So many of my peers are looking at what someone else had for breakfast or what new clothes so-and-so got but the moment they put their phone down they bond over their disappointments of life. Complaining about how much things you have to do, how tired you are, or how miserable you're feeling seem to have become the most popular topics of conversation among students. \n\n![images-1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWY3SCGrod7WVcDrWXyu2iAmvoKKnmLw2xMmDMZZ9dAMp/images-1.jpg)  \n\n\nIt is very normal for us to run away from our problems. It is natural to get frightened at having to face our lives, our problems, and our issues and try to run away from them. We even create television shows about it. However I have a lingering thought about this topic. In one of my favorite books, King Kong Theory, there's a quote which really struck a cord with me; \"An insecure consumer is the best consumer\". \n\nTrying to evade or problems is a normal reaction. It takes a lot of effort and work to try to tackle our problems head on and most of us would rather not. However, I can't help but wonder, have we fallen into a trap. A trap in which we consistently distract ourselves rather than face up to our reality and either accept it or improve it. A trap in which we consistently feel anxious about ourselves and about our lives but never change anything about it because we are too busy looking at the latest post. A trap in which we consistently feel and stay insecure and in which we consistently stay as the best consumer.",
