| body | 10/19/2017 In late December 1964 Dr. Martin L. King Jr was formally invited to bring his Southern Christian Leadership Conference staff to Selma, Alabama to assist the Dallas County Voters’ League in winning the right to register and vote. (Garrow 39) King employed an act he called passive resistance. In the following report I will describe the roots of the nonviolent philosophy employed by King in Alabama and compare it to the more militant approaches previously advocated by Malcolm X. I will attempt to show the main views of each person’s philosophy, show which of these had the most lasting impact on society, and what we can learn from both the nonviolent and militant approaches. While Malcolm X did not directly advocate violence in Selma, AL. it is worth noting the key ideas and motives of both men. King’s approach in Selma was indirectly influenced by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi known as Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi advocated for freedom for his people using the philosophy of Nonviolence. He accomplished tremendous strides in the betterment of his people’s lives in India during a protest directed towards the British during their occupation of India. (Snodgrass 274) Satyagraha, Gandhi’s nonviolent protest movement (satya= true, agraha= firmness) came to stand like its creator, as a moral principle and a rallying cry: the principle was truth and the cry freedom. (Gandhi 486) Glenn Smiley brought books about Non-violence to King during the early months of the Protest in Selma. (Kirk 46) King didn’t adopt the word nonviolent at first but rather used the word “passive resistance”. (Kirk 46) “If anything, that is so much an injustice that you are justifying trying to demonstrate against it, then note that the one who is the author of the injustice is not qualified to lay the ground rules to you and me on how we are supposed to go about removing that injustice.” Malcolm X. (X) When we read the words of Malcolm X one can see the notion of enough is enough. It isn’t in conflict to King’s means of accomplishing a goal. I view this a complement for King’s tone. A stark reminder of the complete and total desperation of the African American people of Selma and rest of the US. An active aggressive protest that could have been sparked like a match if other tactics failed to avail. While the words of Malcom X are understandably justified time has shown progress for African American populations around the work being delivered primarily from the more socially palatable approached prescribed by King. The goals of both aggressive and nonaggressive approaches practiced and preached by King and X are one in the same. It’s the activities of each that define the behavior and that is where we will draw the differences. One has in it the seed of aggression and yet is understandably so because the will to survive at any lengths is strong. The other, the nonaggressive approach wants to do more than survive. In it is the seed of what it wants to see in the world. The nonaggressive approach uses the anticipated reaction. If the reaction is exploited properly it will work to one’s goal. The reaction to the initiating protest is improperly utilized by the more aggressive thinkers. Movements and causes have public personas. It is in the interest of all great works to maintain an honest benevolent image and act in truthfulness and love in deeds not just in image. It is important to sculpt as an appealing public image as one can. History shows King accomplished this task. Martin Luther King brought the plight of African Americans into the lives of ignorant or apathetic Americans. Showing them peaceful demonstrations that were met with violent aggression leaving in people’s memories the one-sided violence. His tactics brought into the fold of protester; religious leaders, people of every color and creed. The contrasting potential for aggression that was talked about by Malcolm X helped Americans see the need to embrace the nonaggressive forms of protest and react humanely. Gandhi’s original templet for nonaggression coupled with King’s passive resistance has been a steady hold for people of good will today. As with times gone by, us today too are presented with nonaggressive and aggressive options. We can meet violence with violence or we can be like Albert Rosenfield, when he says “I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love.” (Twin) Snodgrass, Mary Ellen. | body | Parent-Child Bed-Sharing Review 10/23/2017 Reaching back to the Bible days people have talked about the health effects of mothers sleeping in the same bed as their babies. (The Bible) I will explain the goals of the article, outline the paper showing interesting points of information, explain my motivation for picking this topic and how the article has not changed my behavior. Bed sharing is the practice of sleeping in the same bed with one's child. (Bed) The authors of the article used many different resources when trying to describe bed sharing around the world. They rigorously compiled information gathered from multiple sources in hopes of carrying out common goals. The goals of the authors were to integrate the parent-child bed-sharing literature from the years 1973 to start of 2016 and to identify cultural issues in the literature. The literature was found from searches performed on EMBASE, ERIC, Google Scholar, PubMed and PsycInfo. The objective was to focus on the main themes and not to combine opposite findings. They proposed the creation of a new subfield of study that was termed psychoanthropediatrics. They detailed the trends found in the six hundred and fifty-nine articles they used. Much work was showed explaining criteria to which an article must meet to be integrated. With this integrated information little conclusive data was delivered explaining whether healthy benefits or unhealthy and dangerous risks resulted from bed sharing. A choropleth map of the world showing the prevalence of bed sharing around parts of the world showed much of North and South America did not reach more than twenty percent of the surveyed population co-sleeping. Asia and Africa had higher rates of bed-sharing than Europe and North and South America. Amongst surveyed Africans there was less deliberate bed sharing. Rather the people continued an unconscious cultural normative of bed sharing but not actively doing it like some Americans. While there were a few instances where deliberate bed sharing, where the mother had a positive attitude towards the act and it resulted in a positive benefit to the life of the child not much of the article leaned ether positive or negative but was rather a mix of inconclusive, positive and negative effects. My motivation for picking this topic was to aid myself in deciding for sleeping habits if I ever have a child. While my hope was to find a definitive answer on weather bed sharing is healthy and beneficial or disadvantaging and potentially dangerous. The article did not sway my preference for not sharing my bed with any future children I may have. The deliberate practice of bed sharing may be indicative of a highly determined parent to better the life of their child. | body | "The right of a competent, terminally ill person to avoid excruciating pain and embrace a timely and dignified death bears the sanction of history and is implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.” (Supreme 3) While it is worth our time to consider the potential misuses of PAS we should as human beings take ample notice of the suffering by those who are in their final days due to a terminal illness. Legalization of physician-assisted suicide is important because it is morally repugnant to use the legal apparatus to restrict end of life choices. While the roles of doctor and patient are predefined, it is important to note how these relationships are evolving around the world and in the US. Multiple countries have passed laws allowing for terminally ill individuals to choose the time and place for their final breath. One of the foundations of the American legal system is liberty for the individual. What is more precious than the gift of choosing to end one’s own suffering? Allowing for Doctors to assist the terminally ill with suicide is new to America. It was first made legal in Vermont in 2013. (Hallenbeck np) It has since been legalized or allowances have been made via court ruling in California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Montana and the District of Columbia. (State np) The idea that the right of the individual to end his or her life is one protected by the courts when Judge Nan Nash stated, “This Court cannot envision a right more fundamental, more private or more integral to the liberty, safety and happiness of a New Mexican than the right of a competent, terminally ill patient to choose aid in dying.” (Second 12) The United States Declaration of Independence states “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” surely if we have the right to life then we must have the right to end our life. (Jefferson np) The evolving interpretation of personal liberty is not at odds with traditional doctor patient relationships. However, some say contrary. (Battin 177) The role of Doctors and patients has been evolving and changing throughout history. Barbers no longer perform surgery. (McGrew 30-31) We now have Lidocaine for dental work. (Lidocaine np) There are people who prefer to give birth at home with a midwife but the option for hospital births are available for the people who desire to give birth in the safety of the professional environment of a local hospital’s birthing center. Philip Nitschke MD’s statement expresses his views on the changes to the Hippocratic Oath and the appropriateness of PAS when he said “Over time the Hippocratic Oath has been modified on a number of occasions as some of its tenets became less and less acceptable. References to women not studying medicine and doctors not breaking the skin have been deleted. The much-quoted reference to 'do no harm' is also in need of explanation. Does not doing harm mean that we should prolong a life that the patient sees as a painful burden? Surely, the 'harm' in this instance is done when we prolong the life, and 'doing no harm' means that we should help the patient die. Killing the patient--technically, yes. Is it a good thing--sometimes, yes. Is it consistent with good medical end-of-life care: absolutely yes." (Lopez np) His opinions and views are not much different from others around the world. Currently eight countries allow PAS or Euthanasia. (staff np) The Netherlands were the first the legalize Euthanasia and PAS when they passed Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide Act of 2012. (Justitie np) Followed by Belgium with The Belgian Act on Euthanasia of May 28, 2002. (The Belgian np) In the United States there exist no laws allowing for PAS via federal legislation. The Supreme Court ruled in 1997 that there is no Constitutional right to suicide. (SUPREME COURT np) Allowing for states to legislate PAS. The New York State Department of Health said, "Under any new system of health care delivery, as at present, it will be far less costly to give a lethal injection than to care for a patient throughout the dying process.” in The New York State Department of Health Report of 2011. (Would np) There is no one size fits all approach to PAS. We should allow for each community to bring this subject up for discussion and see the benefits of such allowed abilities. In my opinion, we would benefit from allowing death with dignity to be an option. When or if the time comes that the choice is before you to decide weather or not to allow for PAS or euthanasia, I implore you to allow a swift completion of the lives of those who are finished living. Just like time flies when you’re having fun so do the seconds drag on when we endure suffering. The evolving relationships of doctors and patients continues to change. Let us move in the direction that allows for the maximum personal control to one’s own life. When the end of life suffering can be opted out of by others around the world restricting it here in the United States seems draconian.
