titleSetting Yourself Up for Happiness and Success in College (From a Graduate Who Struggled With Both)
bodyI recently graduated with an industrial engineering degree from Georgia Tech (#1 IE program in the world), so you can rest assured that I’m somewhat aware of what it takes to succeed in an extremely competitive environment. https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmWPaJs9Zaq4CGJn2FZstikscTSUwrMZqohEe54Za4BcAy This post is likely to be useful to you if you identify with any of the following: You’ve mostly gotten A’s throughout the years without much effort. Most people know you as the smart guy, likely to do great things with your life. You’ve long had interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) topics. You’re about to pursue a degree in a STEM field. You might not be shouting it from rooftops, but you’re quite ambitious and plan on being in the top 1% of your field (becoming wealthy in the process). You’ve probably gotten into a great school, so you’re on that path already. You tend to be efficient, using the least amount of time needed to get your shit done. In fact, that efficiency is one of the qualities you really value in yourself. It allows you to spend more time surfing the interwebz, playing video games, reading, or otherwise doing something (anything) less mind-numblingly boring than schoolwork. You actually don’t really study in the first place. You prefer to pay attention in class and that’s generally been enough. You might not be known as a social butterfly, but that’s why you’re going into STEM, right? Approaching strangers to make friends is far more challenging than it is for others. You try to blend in with the crowd to avoid embarrassing yourself. Networking that doesn’t have the word ‘social’ in front of it is something that eludes you to no end. You’ve heard a lot of advice about college until now. But then again, you definitely heard the same generic bullshit before you went to middle and high school. It obviously didn’t apply to you then and you’re hoping it won’t apply to you now. If you plan to tackle a STEM degree at a prestigious school in the same way you approached high school (by the seat of your pants), I have some unfortunate news for you: Life is about to roundhouse kick you in the face so hard, you’ll wake up 4 years from now wondering what you were doing that whole time and why your head hurts so much (and are those *your teeth* lying on the sidewalk?). Less enjoyable than it sounds, trust me. --------------- This post is to help those who are not so sure how to prepare for college but would like to know what to work towards. Following my advice is going to require considerable effort (most worthwhile undertakings do). But first I need to share my own story so that you know what **not** to do. I’m mainly going to talk about my first year, because the first year is what sets the pace for the rest of your college career. By any objective standard, my results first year were excellent. I made all A’s except for 2 B’s. My gpa after that year was about a 3.8. Sounds good right? Well, the habits I developed during this year guaranteed that I would be a bumbling mess for the remainder of my degree. I had taken some classes in high school that prepared me well for most of the core classes freshmen take. So what did I do? I spent class either doing homework for one of my classes or dicking around on my computer instead of paying attention to lecture and taking diligent notes. That is, when I actually went to class. I mean, why bother busting my ass when I was familiar with a lot of the material and could just read about it from the book? I was being efficient. I had earned plenty of time to play MapleStory and browse Reddit. Amazingly, my time spent in class + doing work and studying was far less than in high school where I’d spend 8 hours in class 5 days a week, and then spend hours a day doing homework after getting home. This was the life! Little did I know, I’d actually crippled myself right out of the gate. These destructive habits stuck with me as the coursework became more challenging and the classes less forgiving. By the time I finished my degree, my gpa had fallen to a 2.8. To be fair, that still doesn’t sound nearly as bad as I’ve been making it out to be. What the numbers don’t tell you is that I went from always getting A’s to never getting one again, lost the scholarship that was paying for my tuition, wasn’t once employed by a company, took 5 years instead of 4, let my health deteriorate, and (worst of all) I became deeply unhappy. Let me just pause here to say that this isn’t supposed to be a pity party. Every problem I’ve mentioned can be fixed or rebounded from. I’m only sharing all this to emphasize that circumstances change quickly. And the good news is, you can prevent this from happening to you. Prevention is always more effective than finding a cure after the fact. So, let’s move on to the advice, shall we? --------------- # Form Good Habits I want to emphasize that habits like these are *difficult to form*. Try to focus on 1-2 at a time and start slow. That means if you currently work 4 hours every day, see if you can get it to 5 hours a day for the next couple of weeks. Then move to 6 and so on. If you want to start eating healthy, then start by eating just a healthy lunch. Go from 2 cups of soda a day to 1. You get the picture. And if you do try to tackle 4 of these from scratch, I can virtually guarantee that you won’t do a single one. Habits take a lot of effort to establish, but the good news is once established, they’ll stick with you. ### 1. Set Aside 8 Hours Per Day For Work So this one is fairly simple, but it is important. The 8 hours you work includes the time that you’re in lecture, recitation, and lab. For those coming from high school, this might seem surprising since you’re already used to spending 8 hours a day in class. Except after school is over, you still have to spend X additional hours doing assignments or studying. So you’re actually committing less time than you were before. There was a teacher who actually recommended this to me in high school. I thought it was bullshit. After my first year was over, I’d confirmed it was bullshit. After all, I’d dominated my classes compared to most of my peers while spending less time being productive than I had in high school. I was dead wrong. That’s the danger of just assuming good grades = being successful. I was the Hare in the Tortoise and the Hare. Let me just get something out of the way here: time spent on homework or studying is *never* wasted. So you spent an hour longer on that assignment than your friend did? So what? Your neurons had longer to form connections related to that subject. Even more importantly, you’re building the habit of working hard. Work ethic is a muscle that will atrophy if it’s not constantly exercised. For anyone who can get their work done spending only 3-4 hours per day, find a way to use the remaining 4-5 hours anyway. Review what you’ve done. Read next week’s material. Hell, start learning material for a future class if that’s where you are. If you’re already getting A’s in every class, aim to get perfect scores on your exams just to prove that you can. Ruin the curve and be proud of it. Don’t let all that valuable time evaporate into thin air. If your freshman classes are easy for you, this habit applies to you even more. You aren’t working this many hours because you need it to do well. It’s an investment for the years to come. ### 2. Work on Assignments and Study With Friends Find the people who work their asses off. They aren’t hard to spot. They’ll sit towards the front of the class, they’ll be taking notes, and they’ll have the balls to ask questions during lecture. Found somebody? Good. Now go sit next to that person and introduce yourself. You want to get acquainted with these people and work on assignments with them (even if you understand the material easily). The advantage of having someone else with you is that when you get stuck on something you’ll have someone to ask for help. And you will be able to help whenever the same happens to them. Another advantage is that being in a group will keep everyone on task. 3-5 people in a group should be the sweet spot. ### 3. Do Not Skip Class Oh god. Please don’t skip class. The first class you miss in a semester will throw you off so hard. I know it can be easy to justify missing a class here and there, but it’s just not worth it. Go sleep in class if you must, but *be there*. Let’s say you miss the material from one lecture. The next time you walk in, chances are it’s going to sound like you’re hearing another language (if you’ve got a foreign professor, that might already be the case). The pace of some classes can be brutal. In the cases where you absolutely must miss a lecture, call a friend from that class and ask if he or she can sit down with you and explain what you missed. Getting behind in a class can be a total nightmare. Don’t let it happen. ### 4. Eat Healthy Food and Sleep 7-8 Hours a Night This is pretty standard advice for any self help literature (and rightfully so). If you put shit into your body, you’re gonna feel like shit. If you sleep like shit, you’re gonna feel like shit. Period. Treat your body well. You wouldn’t expect your car to work normally if you put kool-aid and piss in the tank. Here’s an easy way to at least eat *something* as you sleepwalk to your first class. Every time you go to the dining hall, grab an apple or banana to eat the next morning. Those of you who are adventurous could even get some granola bars at Walmart. One more thing: Drink water. I know the soda fountains in the dining hall seem like the best thing since Jesus, but just don’t even go there. Soda every day will make you feel lethargic and give you headaches. As for sleep, make sure you’re getting 7-8 hours per day. Yes, even on the weekdays. If all you’re running on every day is 3 hours of sleep and Starbucks, soon you’ll be tweaking just as bad as the meth addict down the hall. Go to sleep. Just do it. https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/Qma92yLWtueiQjoVzheeA7kNsssxC8ZN73KfWj2H7HA26k ### 5. Join Clubs You Are Interested In You should join clubs for two main reasons. The first is that you’ll be able to spend time doing something you enjoy with others who enjoy it too. The second is that you’ll get a chance to network. Which is a fancy word that means ‘making friends’. I joined the video game club, but stopped going after my first semester in favor of doing the same thing, but by myself (ugh). A friend of mine would also invite me every week to go to the math club. I went once, but it was a 15 minute walk, so every time he invited me after I’d make up some crap to get out of it (one sec, going to go bang my head against the wall repeatedly). There are no other clubs to speak of. Don’t be like me or you’ll find yourself without a wide reaching network by the end of your college career. ### 6. Apply to a Few Internships Okay, I know you’re a freshman and you still aren’t even sure what it is people do in your field, but hear me out. It’s going to be really difficult to find an internship for many reasons, but it will force you to do a few essential tasks. First is that you’ll have to make a resume, which you’re going to have to do eventually anyway. Second, you’ll have to get all your formal clothes together, another task you’re going to have to get out of the way eventually. Third, you’ll get practice going to a career fair. The first career fair you go to, there’s a high chance you’re going to embarrass yourself. You want to get this out of the way while it’s still completely acceptable and expected of you. Finally, you’re getting practice with the whole process of finding a job. When you actually have a good chance of getting an internship from your second year onward, you’ll be ahead of the competition (which is honestly what companies are looking for in the first place). And if you do manage to get an offer your first year, take that shit! By the time you get through college you’ll have the resume of a rock star. ### 7. Hit the Gym (Optional) After my first year, instead of getting the freshman 15, I’d experienced the freshman -10. Picture a dude who’s 5’9” and weighs 105 pounds. I’ll let you decide how I looked on a scale of corpse to 10. So I found a friend and hit the gym. If you’ve never worked out, it’s normal to be self conscious about the amount you’re lifting. I certainly was. Despite that, I’m telling you now that you shouldn’t give a single fuck. In truth, most everyone else there actually admires that you’ve started working out because we all remember how difficult it was starting out. For example, when I first started I had trouble doing bench press without any weight on the bar (seriously). By the time I was done with my degree I’d gained about 30 pounds of muscle and could bench my bodyweight. Working out is something I actually got right during college ([results](http://imgur.com/gallery/EFHou) for those who are curious). The first 3-4 weeks are going to feel like hell, but if you manage to make it past that, lifting starts to feel amazing. You’ll walk out of the gym twice the size you were an hour earlier in a pleasant haze of endorphins. Another huge component of successfully working out is eating the correct foods. A simple guideline is to get protein, vegetables, fruit, and enough carbs (don’t go crazy unless you need the weight) to have energy. Honestly, getting your eating habits under control will make or break working out, so worry about that before you step into the gym. I had very limited success gaining muscle until 2 years after I started lifting for that very reason. I could go into way more detail, but I don’t feel that this is as important as the other sections. I might make a post in the future on this topic. --------------- # Make Friends With People You Want to Be Like Yes, you read that correctly. I’m not saying to make friends with people you *like*. I’m saying to make friends with people who embody the qualities you wish you had. Figure out exactly what kind of person you want to be and then seek those people out. Here’s something a lot of you might not realize. There are a lot of things you choose to do or beliefs you have that you’ve got little control over. This could be how often you study, to how you spend your free time, to what music you listen to, and even whether you’re optimistic or pessimistic. All of these things are influenced by the people you spend the most time with. If you only hang around people who spend most of their time studying, I guarantee you will study more than otherwise. If you only hang around people who play video games all day, I guarantee you will play more video games than otherwise. You are going to emulate what your closest friends do. It’s the way of the tribe that evolution hardwired into our brains. Keeping that in mind, here are the qualities I recommend you look for in the friends you make, in order of importance. ### 1. Kind and Optimistic I’m going to be real here for a second. At some point you’re going to realize that the most important thing in life has nothing to do with what’s in your bank account, your abilities, or how much influence you have. What everyone is really looking for are happiness and contentment. When you envision yourself as rich or the best in the world at something, what you’re actually imagining is the feeling of happiness you’d experience in that moment. So why not work towards happiness directly? The way you perceive the world and the way you feel on a daily basis is heavily dependent on the company you keep. So the people you want to be around are those who treat you kindly and remain optimistic. Emotions are contagious, so you’d better expose yourself to the right ones. Happiness will make you a more effective human being in almost every way. https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmWffzQbdq6gpvVCmV6KXkVHxxX2s2y3qG9hrsvhFZ69JV ### 2. Hard Working As mentioned earlier, you want to find the people who work their asses off and spend as much time with them as you can. If you’re sitting in the library with 3 friends who are working on assignments, you’re most likely going to be working too, not playing Starcraft (unless you’re an asshole). This is just another application of you parroting your friends. Make sure you’re parroting the behaviors that actually benefit you. ### 3. Intelligent Intelligence could mean a lot of things, so I’ll just give you my take on it. Everyone possesses a different set of beliefs. The people whose actions and reasoning are consistent with their beliefs are the ones you should give more consideration to. In other words, avoid hypocrites. Generally an intelligent person is one who, despite having biases (everyone you talk to will, unless you speak to your toaster), is aware of some of those biases and does their best to manage them. I believe that takes a lot of intelligence to do. Someone who is intelligent in this way is someone who you can have discussions with. Someone who isn’t is only capable of arguing. --------------- There are so many stories and lessons I could tell you about my time at college, but this is the essential advice to remember. Form good habits, and become friends with the right people. I wish you the best!

You’ve probably gotten into a great school, so you’re on that path already.\n\nYou tend to be efficient, using the least amount of time needed to get your shit done. In fact, that efficiency is one of the qualities you really value in yourself. It allows you to spend more time surfing the interwebz, playing video games, reading, or otherwise doing something (anything) less mind-numblingly boring than schoolwork. You actually don’t really study in the first place. You prefer to pay attention in class and that’s generally been enough.\n\nYou might not be known as a social butterfly, but that’s why you’re going into STEM, right? Approaching strangers to make friends is far more challenging than it is for others. You try to blend in with the crowd to avoid embarrassing yourself. Networking that doesn’t have the word ‘social’ in front of it is something that eludes you to no end.\n\nYou’ve heard a lot of advice about college until now. But then again, you definitely heard the same generic bullshit before you went to middle and high school. It obviously didn’t apply to you then and you’re hoping it won’t apply to you now. If you plan to tackle a STEM degree at a prestigious school in the same way you approached high school (by the seat of your pants), I have some unfortunate news for you:\n\nLife is about to roundhouse kick you in the face so hard, you’ll wake up 4 years from now wondering what you were doing that whole time and why your head hurts so much (and are those *your teeth* lying on the sidewalk?). Less enjoyable than it sounds, trust me.\n\n---------------\n\nThis post is to help those who are not so sure how to prepare for college but would like to know what to work towards. Following my advice is going to require considerable effort (most worthwhile undertakings do). But first I need to share my own story so that you know what **not** to do.\n\nI’m mainly going to talk about my first year, because the first year is what sets the pace for the rest of your college career.\n\nBy any objective standard, my results first year were excellent. I made all A’s except for 2 B’s. My gpa after that year was about a 3.8. Sounds good right? Well, the habits I developed during this year guaranteed that I would be a bumbling mess for the remainder of my degree. \n\nI had taken some classes in high school that prepared me well for most of the core classes freshmen take. So what did I do? I spent class either doing homework for one of my classes or dicking around on my computer instead of paying attention to lecture and taking diligent notes.\n\nThat is, when I actually went to class. I mean, why bother busting my ass when I was familiar with a lot of the material and could just read about it from the book? I was being efficient. I had earned plenty of time to play MapleStory and browse Reddit. I believe that takes a lot of intelligence to do.\n\nSomeone who is intelligent in this way is someone who you can have discussions with. Someone who isn’t is only capable of arguing.\n\n---------------\n\nThere are so many stories and lessons I could tell you about my time at college, but this is the essential advice to remember. Form good habits, and become friends with the right people. I wish you the best!",

bodyYes well that's also part of the strategy, I usually upvote around 10-15 mins if there are few voters to get my first row tickets. Of course for that the post should have a lot of potential.

bodyYep, you're definitely not gonna be one of the first to get in. On the upside though, is that you won't accidentally vote on something good a couple minutes after it has gone up. The way the system works now, you'll get a linear penalty on your curation until 30 minutes has passed. So if you vote at 15 minutes you give 50% of the curation reward to the author. If you vote at 1 minute, you give ~97% of the reward.

bodyNice strategy, I think if a post is trending you are already a little late though but you can definitely find a couple of posts with untapped potential this way.
