| body | I have another dream for you all. Unfortunately, this theme is fairly common for me but I'll get to that after the dream. I was out to sea with a dog I recall being named Paul Anka and a large man I didn't recognize. I knew he was my enemy in some way and while we all seemed doomed to die out at sea I was determined to try to live. While on some driftwood with Paul Anka I had managed to take sea water and with plastic, create condensation from the heat of the sun to drink purified water in limited amounts (I have no idea if this would actually work). I would continually scan the horizon looking for land and always could see a shark's fin in the distance but it never seemed to get closer. There was a giant wave that came at us and I was able to move my little makeshift raft with Paul Anka to the back of the wave so it didn't raise us up to the top of the wave but the large man near us got pulled into it and once the wave crashed down the little vortex it created sucked him under the water but I somehow ended up entangled with him and sucked under as well. It pulled us down maybe 40 feet and I kept kicking to get back up to the surface even though my lungs felt like they were on fire and the pressure from being under water made me feel dizzy. I'm not sure what happened to my enemy but I finally broke through the surface and could see shore. I was able to ride another wave to shore with Paul Anka and we could see a city built with a narrow opening to the heart of the city. I led Paul Anka down the narrow passageway and was greeted by a group of people wearing orange life-vests who had recently rescued my enemy. They put a life-vest around me as well and suddenly I found myself feeling grateful towards my enemy and I embraced him. It turned out he owned the building we were standing in front of and allowed myself and Paul Anka to come inside to eat and get warm but that's when we noticed the waves were reaching further and further into the city until one finally hit against the door. My enemy was suddenly irritated with us and the rest of the group for having his home destroyed and once the water receded we went outside to assess the situation. There was no reason to believe the tide would recede or the waves would stop but there was also no where to hide. My quasi enemy yelled something then rook off running. I followed after him thinking in his anger he would lead me back to the shore but instead he took us to a secret passage that was able to close off the water. The passage was made out of some reinforced windows making everything visible to us so as we ran we could continue to watch mother nature rage at us with larger and more powerful waves. And then my son woke me up. Before I start trying to dissect this dream I think it would be helpful to give you a little more information about my main man Jung. Jung had believed that all dreams are influenced by a personal and a collective unconscious that hold symbols of objects, subjects and archtypes that play a role in our dreams. The personal unconscious would include people and objects which hold specific meaning to us such as our parents, siblings, our room, a favorite toy, game or clothing article. All of these things have a special meaning that only we can fully appreciate or understand. The collective unconscious is said to hold archytpes that remain constant and common across time and cultures such as an appearance of a wise old woman, the shadow, water, fire, the anima and the animus. Jung spent much of his life identifying a variety of different archtypes and actually created the "Red Book" which is a giant, leather bound book full of his work that was only recently published but is heavy enough to make a decent weapon if need be. A friend of mine actually received a copy (that she will never read) for which I am only slightly jealous alas, that is another story. The point of this is to explain there is a variety of levels you should examine when completing dream work and to be honest, doing your own dream work is generally frowned upon because there is no way to be completely unbiased. But this is my journey I am sharing with all of you and I of course am open to any other interpretations or ideas. So lets start with Paul Anka, shall we? I believe he made an appearance because I recently watched Gilmore Girls where there is a dog named Paul Anka so I don't know if there was any more to it than that. Possibly as dogs are know as man's best friend he could have represented loyalty and friendship. He did stay with me throughout the dream but didn't seem to have any other significant interactions with other dream subjects. The man in my dream I can only imagine to be my animus, a compilation of masculine traits within me projected into my dream. Jung would often classify an anima or animus as positive or negative and in this dream I felt unclear as my feelings towards him changed from enemy to saviour, back to fear and then relief. This could indicate I am having difficulty creating a positive relationship with my male psychological traits or that my anger is getting out of hand. Again, I am in water. An entire ocean throwing me about like a rag doll, dragging me into it's depths and all the while being circled by a menacing shark. If this sounds bad, that's probably because I think it is. This is not a happy unconscious. The violence in the waves, being pulled under so I can't breath and the ever present threat of being eaten by a silent predator all invokes a sense of fear and being overwhelmed with the only possible solution seeming to indicate I need to find better balance between myself and my anima to make it to safety. I'm curious whether it may also mean I am on the verge of drowning in my unconscious and maybe need to take a step back? Hard to say. The dream did end with me seeing, with clarity, the gravity of my situation while again running away. I think it will be helpful for me to revisit this dream. Any input is appreciated!! | body | Dinosaurs! My first dream since my introductory post! Let's dive in... So, I'm not sure what the beginning of the dream was but from what I remember I was in a rectangular room with high ceilings and I was on a balcony maybe three quarters of the way up the wall. Across from me was another balcony but not accessible from where I was. A girl was in the room with me folding paper and wedging it into the ledge saying she was making steps to get to the other side. I remember thinking paper wasn't going to be strong enough but I let it go and said nothing. I stayed a few more minutes then I walked out of room. There was a gap that I don't remember what happened and then I was having a strange encounter being chased by a T-Rex. I was near the bottom of a valley in a large pond with a friend swimming when there was something that alerted me to a screen. It was similar to an old school Mario map where it shows you little picture icons of levels but this one showed a T-Rex jumping into our level and above me was a huge reddish T-Rex jumping the span of the pond and landing at the top of the valley. I yelled at the others to look out then my friend and I swam to a corner of the pond to try to hide behind a large piece of wooden debris. We could hear yelling and two more people ran around the path below the hill towards us then jumped into the pond. When they emerged above the surface, they spotted us and began to swim towards us but unfortunately they weren't fast enough and gave away our hiding spot when the T-Rex jumped down beside the edge of the pond. It looked directly at each of us and we started to try to swim away but I had the sense I was a goner. Somehow I made it to the side with the others and we started running. We could hear the T-Rex's heavy footsteps and roars behind us then something came over me and I stopped. Something interesting happened in my dream then because the perspective changed and instead of me seeing what was happening from my own person it spanned out to a third person perspective and I had undergone a transformation where I had become a raptor. As the T-Rex charged towards me I met it face on, then slid under him and jumped on his back up to his neck and began biting him until he fell over. I don't remember any other details other than I felt safe. What does all this means, you might ask. Well, I will try to walk through my cognitive interpretation of dream work. Starting in the rectangular room with papers. The shape and size of the room was similar to a jail cell and combined with paper steps that were lined horizontally instead of vertically (which would suggest progress or growth) I had the sense of being stuck. Jung would often associate ascending or descending stairs to represent changes in an individuals level of consciousness and in this dream, there was no way for me to jump into the unconscious or climb to a higher level of consciousness. I cannot say for certain this dream is continued into my dinosaur dream or a separate REM cycle but I believe both dreams hold similarities. A new way to describe my dream which may make it easier to interpret symbolically is being chased by a deadly predator, seeking refugee in murky water, having others compromise my safety, then achieving transformation in order to stop running and face my fears. Jung, as well as most dream analysts, indicate that running from dream subjects or objects is reflecting your defense mechanism of avoidance. In other words, you're not wanting to deal with some problem. This is a common theme many people experience. Another important aspect of this dream is the water. Nearly all analysts also agree that water in dreams represent the unconscious. The size, clarity, activity and depth of the water can all represent different things so sprinklers, pools, lakes, and oceans can all significantly change the meaning of a dream. In my case, I had sought refuge in my unconscious to keep me safe. The pond was large in size but still superficial in regards to large bodies of water, the depth was maybe 10 feet or so with still, but murky water. The clarity, or lack of same, can represent emotional resolve in the unconscious and in this case it would suggest I have little motivation to change my avoidant ways. But my dream progresses and shows me that if I am able to achieve some sense of transformation I would be able to face my fear or problem successfully. While there were others in my dream I did not wake up with a sense of who they were or their gender, only that together there were four of us. While other people in dreams can be extremely important, in this case I believe the amount of people was more important to recognize. Now Jung completed an inordinate amount of research on the importance of numbers as an archetype in dreams but for now I shall focus on 4. There are a few possible interpretations which may be relevant to this dream. The first would be the stages of life being birth, childhood, adulthood then death. Another possible interpretation is more religious in natural signifying a whole with the father, the son, the Holy Ghost, and the self. Subjects in dreams are not necessarily interpreted as separate others but rather different aspects of the self. There, again, is a lot to be said but for brevity sake I believe this dream is suggesting there are parts of me that do not wish to change and motivate me to continue running and avoiding my problems. Lastly you may be saying, dinosaurs? What could that possibly mean! To which I have to say I'm not convinced it means much. You see my sons birthday was this past weekend and you guessed it! It is dinosaur themed. Some people take the stance that dreams are meaningless because it's just convoluted memories from what we experience everyday but instead Jung believed that our unconscious mind attempts to take our everyday experiences and knowledge and use these objects and images for people to communicate metaphorically and symbolically to the unconscious. Even Freud has been known to say that sometimes a Cigar is just a Cigar and in this case I think the dinosaur was just a readily available object in my dream to represent a danger. Until next time, happy napping! |

| body |

Hello Steemit members! I have not utilized a writing platform before but I like the idea of processing my ideas in writing and I am hopeful to expand some discussion primarily about sleeping and dream analysis although, I am sure my thoughts will wander to current events and my day to day waking experiences as well.

But first, a little bit about myself. I am a married mother of two tiny dictators and love being their mother more than I had ever imagined. My daughter is four and my son is just turning three so, they are at a magical age with a steep learning curve! I am also a licensed psychologist and I have had the honor of clients sharing their dreams with me and being able to help create awareness between the parallels of the unconscious and the conscious self for nearly four years now. It has been a surreal experience and has made me a firm believer that there are immense forces influencing our everyday thoughts, feelings and behaviors; more so than I believe many people would feel comfortable acknowledging. As my clients have confided their own personal experiences in me (not an easy feat!) I will not betray their trust and relay any of their stories or dreams here but rather, I would like to use this platform to be a space where I can further explore my own dreams.

While I have always dreamed, over the years I have had a few dreams that have stuck with me, remaining vivid. At that time, I was a young child and young adult. I was not concerned with silly dreams and did not imagine they were anything more than a random projection of seemingly unrelated images and events in my life. It was not until four years ago when I met my amazing clinical supervisor that I sat up and started to pay attention to what my unconscious may be trying to communicate to me. My prior professional training was in forensic work, where psychology and law collide, but she was a solid Jungian psychologist; all about the unconscious. For anyone who has provided mental health services to court-mandated forensic clients (inmates, probationers, substance abusers) you may have discovered that the best interventions are those that are straight-forward and practical like CBT and solution focused treatment. Jungian work is anything but straight forward. So when this particular supervisor wanted me to expand my clinical skills and work therapeutically with clients and their dreams I was hesitant to say the least. And what's more, she wanted me to ask my own unconscious for dreams! This seemed like such a strange request at the time I am sure I stood there looking a bit stupid trying not to react at all and not come off as offensive. I believe I had silently nodded my head with no intention of doing any such thing however, as time went on and I began to trust my supervisor more I decided to give it a try. So, one fateful night when I couldn't sleep I decided it was time. I closed my eyes, took a few steadying breaths and said, "okay self, give me a dream." And damn if it didn't give me a memorable dream that first night!

I am curious what I may dream tonight may be in expectation of going public with my private thoughts. I owe a lot of my personal and professional growth to this supervisor. She was a refreshing mentor who opened up a new world for me and through this site, I plan to open that world for all of you. This is my four-year-old daughter's drawing. It seems very abstract and when I asked her what it was she said, "just something I saw in my head."

|

I have not utilized a writing platform before but I like the idea of processing my ideas in writing and I am hopeful to expand some discussion primarily about sleeping and dream analysis although, I am sure my thoughts will wander to current events and my day to day waking experiences as well.
\n

\n
But first, a little bit about myself.
