It is a great experience, as not only can I read the book on my e-reader, but thanks to the Kindle app, my smartphone and tablet too. Quite frankly, I never considered getting an electronic book anywhere else.\n\nIf you are a Windows 10 user, you can buy books from the official Store — just like an app, song, game, or movie. If you have never bought an e-book from Microsoft before, now may be the time. The Windows-maker will give you a $5 Windows Store credit for buying a book from its store. Believe it or not, it even applies to books that cost less than $5, meaning you can sort of make a profit off the deal.\n\n“For a limited time, buy any book in the new Books store for Windows 10 and you’ll get $5 towards the next read you pay for. You can explore this new digital store category and read from whatever Windows device you’re on — laptop, 2-in-1, desktop or mobile,” says Athima Chansanchai, News Center Staff, Microsoft.\n\nChansanchai says “any book,” so I checked the small print as seen below. There are some catches, such as the $5 credit is forfeited if you do not redeem by August 15 and it is only available in the USA. With that said, as long as the book isn’t free, it is eligible — even if it costs less than $5. Score!\n\nLimit 1 per customer. Customer must purchase a book between June 21, 2017 12:01 am ET and June 30, 2017 at 11:59 PM PST from Windows Store. Not valid on prior orders or purchases, or free books; cannot be transferred or otherwise redeemed for cash. Microsoft reserves the right to modify or discontinue offers at any time. Once purchased, an e-mail will follow within ten days with a promotional gift code. You must redeem code by August 15, 2017 and spend within 90 days of redemption. Gift code is valid in the United States only at select Microsoft digital stores for eligible purchases. See gift code terms at microsoft.com/cardterms.\n\nBooksMS\n\nAfter doing some searching, I found a cool section of the Windows Store titled “Great Books Under $5.” There are some books as low as 99 cents here, meaning you can buy a selection for a buck, get the $5 credit, and then use it for another selection. How cool is that?\n\nThe credit should work for all things in the store, including apps, so even if you don’t want a book, it can’t hurt to buy one for 99 cents to get a $5 credit for an app or game. Gremel made this remarkable donation because he purchased $1,000 worth of Walgreens stock some seven decades ago.\n\nThis past weekend on Father’s Day, Gremel adopted an elderly Chihuahua. Winnie the dog is about 9 years old, and was picked up as a stray a few months ago. She had some cancerous growths, which were treated. Gremel had lost his own beloved Chihuahua named Tiger II earlier this year. On Sunday, after the adoption became official, Gremel said Winnie would now be known as Tiger III.",

Kim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters\nTravis Kalanick stepped down Tuesday as chief executive of Uber, the ride-hailing service that he helped found in 2009 and built into a transportation colossus, after a shareholder revolt made it untenable for him to stay on at the company.\n\nMr. Kalanick’s exit came under pressure after hours of drama involving Uber’s investors, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, who asked to remain anonymous because the details were confidential.\n\nEarlier on Tuesday, five of Uber’s major investors demanded that the chief executive resign immediately. The investors included one of Uber’s biggest shareholders, the venture capital firm Benchmark, which has one of its partners, Bill Gurley, on Uber’s board. The investors made their demand for Mr. Kalanick to step down in a letter delivered to the chief executive while he was in Chicago, said the people with knowledge of the situation.\n\nIn the letter, titled “Moving Uber Forward” and obtained by The New York Times, the investors wrote to Mr. Kalanick that he must immediately leave and that the company needed a change in leadership. Mr. Kalanick, 40, consulted with at least one Uber board member, and after long discussions with some of the investors, he agreed to step down. He will remain on Uber’s board of directors.\n\n“I love Uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life I have accepted the investors request to step aside so that Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight,” Mr. Kalanick said in a statement.\n\nUber’s board said in a statement that Mr. Kalanick had “always put Uber first” and that his stepping down as chief executive would give the company “room to fully embrace this new chapter in Uber’s history.” An Uber spokesman declined to comment further.\n\nThe move caps months of questions over the leadership of Uber, which has become a prime example of Silicon Valley start-up culture gone awry. The company has been exposed this year as having a workplace culture that included sexual harassment and discrimination, and it has pushed the envelope in dealing with law enforcement and even partners. That tone was set by Mr. Kalanick, who has aggressively turned the company into the world’s dominant ride-hailing service and upended the transportation industry around the globe.\n\nMr. Kalanick’s troubles began earlier this year after a former Uber engineer detailed what she said was sexual harassment at the company, opening the floodgates for more complaints and spurring internal investigations. In addition, Uber has been dealing with an intellectual property lawsuit from Waymo, the self-driving car business that operates under Google’s parent company, and a federal inquiry into a software tool that Uber used to sidestep some law enforcement.\n\nUber has been trying to move past its difficult history, which has grown inextricably tied to Mr. Kalanick. In recent months, Uber has fired more than 20 employees after an investigation into the company’s culture, embarked on major changes to professionalize its workplace, and is searching for new executives including a chief operating officer.\n\nMr. Kalanick last week said he would take an indefinite leave of absence from Uber, partly to work on himself and to grieve for his mother, who died last month in a boating accident. He said Uber’s day-to-day management would fall to a committee of more than 10 executives.\n\nHow Uber’s Brash Approach Is Beginning to Backfire\nThe company, with its co-founder Travis Kalanick, is known for its brash, aggressive approach. That approach has taken a toll.\n\nBut the shareholder letter indicated that his taking time off was not enough for some investors who have pumped millions of dollars into the ride-hailing company, which has seen its valuation swell to nearly $70 billion. For them, Mr. Kalanick had to go.\n\nThe five shareholders who demanded Mr. Kalanick’s resignation include some of the technology industry’s most prestigious venture capital firms, which invested in Uber at an early stage of the company’s life, as well as a mutual fund firm. Apart from Benchmark, they are First Round Capital, Lowercase Capital, Menlo Ventures and Fidelity Investments, which together own more than a quarter of Uber’s stock. Because some of the investors hold a type of stock that endows them with an outsize number of votes, they have about 40 percent of Uber’s voting power.\n\nBenchmark, Lowercase, First Round, Menlo Ventures and Fidelity did not respond to requests for comment.\n\nBut on Twitter, Mr. Gurley of Benchmark, one of the earliest supporters of Mr. Kalanick at Uber, said of the executive, “There will be many pages in the history books devoted to @travisk — very few entrepreneurs have had such a lasting impact on the world.”\n\nMr. Kalanick’s resignation opens questions of who may take over Uber, especially since the company has been so molded in his image. And Mr. Kalanick will probably remain a presence there since he still retains control of a majority of Uber’s voting shares.\n\nTaking a start-up chief executive to task so publicly is relatively unusual in Silicon Valley, where investors often praise entrepreneurs and their aggressiveness, especially if their companies are growing fast. It is only when those start-ups are in a precarious position or are declining that shareholders move to protect their investment.\n\nIn the case of Uber — one of the most highly valued private companies in the world — investors could lose billions of dollars if the company were to be marked down in valuation.\n\nUber, which has raised more than $14 billion from investors since its founding in 2009, has a wide base of shareholders apart from the ones who signed the letter. Uber’s investors also include TPG Capital, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, mutual fund giants like BlackRock and wealthy clients of firms like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.\n\nIn the letter, in addition to Mr. Kalanick’s immediate resignation, the five shareholders asked for improved oversight of the company’s board by filling two of three empty board seats with “truly independent directors.” They also demanded that Mr. Kalanick support a board-led search committee for a new chief executive and that Uber immediately hire an experienced chief financial officer.\n\nMr. Kalanick is stepping down as Uber works to improve its relationships with some of its constituencies. Earlier Tuesday, the company emailed its drivers, who work as contractors, to let them know they would soon be allowed to take tips, which drivers had not been able to accept previously. The tipping change was among several new initiatives announced for drivers.\n\n“Over the next 180 days we are committed to making driving with Uber better than ever,” the company said. “We know there’s a long road ahead, but we won’t stop until we get there.”",

      "body": "DC Comics favorite Watchmen may be headed for the small screen.\n\nFresh off of critical favorite The Leftovers, Damon Lindelof is in talks for a potential Watchmen TV series for HBO. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the project is in the early development stages. An official deal is not yet in place. Representatives for HBO and producers Warner Bros. Television declined comment.  \n\nLindelof originally read the comics as a kid in the 1980s and has said that the series continues to influence his work. \"From the flashbacks to the nonlinear storytelling to the deeply flawed heroes, these are all elements that I try to put into everything I write,\" he told Comic Book Resources in 2009 ahead of the feature-film take. Lindelof has read Watchmen multiple times and, at the time, praised director Zack Snyder's film. \"It's the most married-to-the-original-text version of Watchmen that could've been made,\" he told the Observer. \"I want to keep it sort of insular,\" he said, referring to the multiple translations that have come from trying to translate the source material. \"It's OK with me if people don't understand it because they don't deserve to understand it.\"\n\nSnyder, who directed the 2009 feature-film adaptation of Alan Moore's beloved comic series, is no longer attached to the drama project from Warner Bros. Television, where both DC Entertainment and Lindelof are housed. \n\nFirst published in 1986 and collected in 1987, Watchmen was created by Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins. The series was named as one of the 100 best novels by Time magazine. Rumors of HBO tackling Watchmen first surfaced in 2015 when the cabler noted it was in preliminary discussions for a TV take on the property.\n\nSnyder, who was briefly attached to the HBO project in 2015, adapted the comic and brought the title's \"Minutemen\" crime fighters to the big screen in 2009 with Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Patrick Wilson starring. The film, produced by Warner Bros. with a $130 million production budget, grossed a disappointing $107.5 million domestically and $185.3 million worldwide. \n\nA Watchmen TV series would further expand HBO's place in the comic book business and offer a potential heir apparent to the premium cable network's fantasy drama Game of Thrones, which has 15 total episodes over two seasons remaining. AMC has found success with The Walking Dead and Preacher, while FX has Noah Hawley's X-Men take Legion, which is already renewed for a second season. The comic book expansion has gone far beyond broadcast after ABC, The CW and Fox found success with DC and Marvel fare including Agents of SHIELD, The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Gotham, among others. Hulu recently picked up Marvel's The Runaways, Freeform has New Warriors and ABC next has The Inhumans as well as another season of Agents of SHIELD, while Marvel continues to have multiple series in the works at Netflix.\n\nFor Lindelof, Watchmen would arrive after The Leftovers, based on the book of the same name, recently wrapped its three-season run on HBO. The Lost alum is repped by CAA and Myman Greenspan.\n\nMoore, meanwhile, announced his retirement from comic books in September, noting that \"I think I have done enough for comics. I've done all that I can.\" On the big screen, his work has been adapted into the features From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta and Batman: The Killing Joke. On the TV side, Fox tried in 2013 to adapt Gentlemen for the small screen. The drama did not move beyond the development stage.",
