| title | Crypto Markets Placid on 10th Anniversary of Bitcoin Whitepaper |
| body | Wednesday, Oct. 31: after a couple of days of mild losses, crypto markets have today stabilized, with most of the top twenty cryptocurrencies by market cap seeing slight fluctuations capped within a 2 percent range. On the 10th anniversary of the publication of its white paper on Oct. 31, 2008, Bitcoin (BTC) is today up under one percent, trading just above $6,300 at press time. Before sustaining mild losses Oct. 29-31, Bitcoin had been trading within a tightly range bound between $6,400-$6,500, prompting multiple crypto sphere commentators to remark on its new quasi stablecoin-like trading patterns. Earlier this month, the top coin sealed a 17-month low volatility rate, recording its highest level of stability since mid-2017: the trend continued before this week’s minor stirrings. Bitcoin’s first ever recorded trading price was March 17, 2010, on the now-defunct platform bitcoinmarket.com, at a value of $0.003: the crypto has sealed 209,999,900 percent growth since then to press time. On the week, Bitcoin is around 1.8 percent in the red, with monthly losses at around 4.65 percent. Ethereum (ETH) is also up just slightly, seeing 1.4 percent growth on the day to trade at $196, having correlated closely with Bitcoin’s trading patterns throughout the week. Until Oct. 29, the leading altcoin was holding close to the $200-$210 mark, before dropping to $192, then trading sideways at a lower price point this week. The coin’s price remains in the lower ranger after dropping Monday, despite big headlines for the Ethereum network since. On Oct. 30, “Big Four” auditor Ernst and Young launched the prototype of an enterprise-focused system that enables secure and private transactions to take place on the Ethereum public blockchain, using zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology. During the Ethereum’s annual Devcon conference today, the co-author of the ERC-20 token standard introduced a new model for Initial Coin Offerings (ICO), dubbed a “reversible ICO” (RICO). The new fundraising model allows investors to return their tokens – and be reimbursed – at any stage of the project, via a special-purpose smart contract. The remaining top ten coins on CoinMarketCap are mostly just inching into green, with the strongest growth sealed by anonymity-oriented alt Monero (XMR), up 2.42 percent to trade at $104.15. Stellar (XLM), down just 0.65 percent at $0.222, has been the hardest hit of any top-ten coin. In the context of the top twenty coins, volatiltiy is also low, with coins seeing a mix of red and green, almost all bound under 2 percent. VeChain (VEC), ranked 20th, is seeing the most change over the past 24 hours, up 2.6 percent. With markedly little price momentum all round, 19th largest crypto Zcash (ZEC) has seen the largest losses on the day to press time, down 1.49 percent. Total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies is around $203.3 billion as of press time, down from around $210 billion – a mark it held for about two weeks prior – since the markets tipped downwards Oct. 29. In other major crypto news today, the chairman of South Korea's Financial Services Commission (FSC) has affirmed that crypto exchanges should face no issues with banks issuing them so-called virtual accounts, as long as their anti-money-laundering (AML) know-your-customer (KYC) measures are adequate. In the U.S., the president of major cryptocurrency exchange and wallet provider Coinbase has denied recent IPO rumors and indicated that the platform aims to support around 200-300 coins within the “next year or so,” though more likely to customers outside of the country. |

On Oct. 30, “Big Four” auditor Ernst and Young launched the prototype of an enterprise-focused system that enables secure and private transactions to take place on the Ethereum public blockchain, using zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology.\n\nDuring the Ethereum’s annual Devcon conference today, the co-author of the ERC-20 token standard introduced a new model for Initial Coin Offerings (ICO), dubbed a “reversible ICO” (RICO). The new fundraising model allows investors to return their tokens – and be reimbursed – at any stage of the project, via a special-purpose smart contract.\n\nThe remaining top ten coins on CoinMarketCap are mostly just inching into green, with the strongest growth sealed by anonymity-oriented alt Monero (XMR), up 2.42 percent to trade at $104.15. Stellar (XLM), down just 0.65 percent at $0.222, has been the hardest hit of any top-ten coin.\n\nIn the context of the top twenty coins, volatiltiy is also low, with coins seeing a mix of red and green, almost all bound under 2 percent. VeChain (VEC), ranked 20th, is seeing the most change over the past 24 hours, up 2.6 percent. With markedly little price momentum all round, 19th largest crypto Zcash (ZEC) has seen the largest losses on the day to press time, down 1.49 percent.\n\nTotal market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies is around $203.3 billion as of press time, down from around $210 billion – a mark it held for about two weeks prior – since the markets tipped downwards Oct. 29.\n\nIn other major crypto news today, the chairman of South Korea's Financial Services Commission (FSC) has affirmed that crypto exchanges should face no issues with banks issuing them so-called virtual accounts, as long as their anti-money-laundering (AML) know-your-customer (KYC) measures are adequate.\n\nIn the U.S., the president of major cryptocurrency exchange and wallet provider Coinbase has denied recent IPO rumors and indicated that the platform aims to support around 200-300 coins within the “next year or so,” though more likely to customers outside of the country.",

| title | Ripple Grapples With Its $21 Billion 'Gorilla': Crypto Asset Adoption |
| body | The organizers of Ripple's two-day Swell conference in San Francisco didn't beat around the bush when they named the final panel of the event "The 800-Pound Gorilla." The question of crypto asset adoption was certainly on many of the attendees' minds, especially since Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse announced the previous day that xRapid, the company's product the leverages the XRP cryptocurrency for "on-demand liquidity" in cross-border payments, is now being used in commercial payments by three companies. At the time of the event, the combined value of all XRP in circulation was worth roughly $21 billion, with each asset trading for around $0.50. XRP previously traded at above $3.50 earlier in the year (at a $130 billion market capitalization) and at around $0.20 at the time of its inaugural Swell conference last year. Representatives of two of the companies in question were on the panel: Brad Ganey, COO of Catalyst Corporate Federal Credit Union, and Nicolas Palacios, CFO of Cuallix. (The third company using xRapid commercially is MercuryFX.) They were joined by Kwon Park, head of business development at Bittrex, a cryptocurrency exchange that has partnered with Ripple to facilitate the fiat-to-XRP transactions at the center of xRapid; and Alfredo O'Hagan, SVP of payment services at IDT, a telecoms firm that provides international payment services and has trialed xRapid in the past. As might be expected from a group that uses cryptocurrencies in their businesses, the panelists were mostly enthusiastic about the adoption of digital, cryptographic assets in cross-border payments. "There's a big difference" between xRapid and traditional systems such as SWIFT, said Palacios, in terms of "cost efficiency, time efficiency, transparency" and customer experience. "We see a lot of competitive advantage to this moving forward," Ganey said of xRapid, given that sending international wires is costly, time-consuming and "not the cleanest process." Rather than thinking of the service as a totally new or alien technology, he added, it may be better to describe it as "a digital wire. It's a faster wire." Garlinghouse perhaps captured the unsatisfactory nature of the incumbent payment infrastructure on the first day of the conference, when he said that the fastest way to move money from Kuwait to San Francisco was to put cash in a suitcase and fly it there. Replacing this system with crypto solutions isn't without its hurdles, however, as O'Hagan pointed out: "We are regulated entities so we have to make sure all the pieces are in place." The process of "education" – an oft-repeated word on the panel – doesn't only involve regulators, however, but internal risk management and compliance personnel, as well as banking partners. "The corporate risk committee had to be convinced," said O'Hagan, continuing, "The first time we mentioned, cryptocurrency we got this" (he imitated a loud, exasperated sigh). IDT, he said, has seen up to a quarter of its international payment flows completed in cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, litecoin and "whatever is best in that particular market" in terms of the exchange rate. Ganey, however, said that as far as regulators are concerned, "to this point we've met with no resistance." An earlier panel provided some cause for optimism on the regulatory front. Michael Didiuk, partner at the Seattle-based law firm Perkins Coie, said that he did not believe the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) – where he spent eight years – would consider XRP a security. "I think it's a currency," he said, though he added that a surprise decision to the contrary (for any cryptocurrency that the market is currently treating like a currency) "is going to have ripple effects – no pun intended." Regulatory uncertainty and internal pushback are not the only barriers to mass cryptocurrency adoption in international payments, however. O'Hagan said: "If you look at xRapid as a hub, you need the spokes, you need the entities that will enable that last mile […] The more companies that join in, the better we all are." In other words, part of what's holding back adoption is lack of adoption. Ganey, however, did not appear to be worried about that, quipping in reference to other financial institutions: "I would be perfectly in favor of them staying on the sideline for a while." |

| title | Password Brute Force Attacks Threaten Millions of App Users |
| body | In September of 2014, private photos of a number of celebrities, including Kate Upton and Jennifer Lawrence, were leaked onto the image-based bulletin board 4chan. It was soon discovered that this leak occurred as a result of a brute force attack against Apple’s iCloud, which until then had not limited the number of login attempts for each user account. Hackers exploited this oversight via the use of a password-breaking tool known as iBrute, which enabled them to gain unauthorized access to several celebrities’ accounts and steal their private photos from available data backups. It is important to note that iCloud is not the only service to have been recently threatened by brute force attacks, however. This type of attacks also affects online accounts stored on users’ mobile devices, as a recent study conducted by AppBugs reveals. Of some 100 mobile apps analyzed, AppBugs found that 53 mobile apps are vulnerable to password brute force attacks. These vulnerabilities threaten the password security of approximately 600 million users, both on the Android and iOS mobile platforms. “Every single issue is an imminent threat to all users using that app,” AppBugs warns. “Once an attacker knows an app is vulnerable to brute force, this person can launch immediately attacks to guess user’s password from the web service of the vulnerable app on all user accounts.” As with the iCloud leak, AppBugs’ study reveals that these apps, which include iHeartRadio, CNN, and Walmart, do not set a limit on the number of times a user can try to access their account. AppBugs is right. According to a research paper written by Joseph Bonneau of the University of Cambridge, passwords in general contain between only 10 and 20 bits of security against any form of attack. An attacker who can make a login attempt to a vulnerable app service at least 30 times a minute can therefore successfully crack a password using between 1,024 and 1,048,576 guesses, the latter of which can be completed within at most 24 days. Depending on the strength of any given password, the time required to break a password may decrease to as little as half an hour. Some app developers have attempted to counter this vulnerability by deploying web application firewalls (WAF) or other rate limiting techniques that can reset a connection with a particular IP address after a certain number of login attempts. However, AppBugs observes that these mitigation strategies do not work “Resetting the connections will just slow down the attacks. The attacker can simply make less connections in every minute to circumvent the defense. Blocking some IP addresses will just force the attackers to use some other IP addresses. For real attackers with a botnet, this is totally not an issue.” Most attackers do not operate under such constraints, however. “Attackers have no problem launching the attacks from multiple IP addresses on multiple user accounts in parallel and often can make guesses more than 30 times per minute,” AppBugs notes. “If today the attacker launches such attack against most user accounts in parallel, he will be able to get most user passwords within 24 days.” So far, AppBugs has released the names of 15 apps after giving them 30 days to fix their password brute force attack vulnerabilities. Only three of those—Wunderlist, Dictionary, and Pocket—have issued fixes. Unless they request extensions, AppBugs intends to release the names of the remaining 38 apps on July 30. To learn more about AppBugs and its efforts to help strengthen mobile security, please visit the company’s website here. |

| title | Here's everything we think we know about the OnePlus 6T Share on Facebook Share on Twitter |
| body | Once upon a time ago, OnePlus used to release one flagship phone a year. But as the company has grown, it's moved to two. In 2016, we got the OnePlus 3 and then the 3T. Then in 2017, the OnePlus 5 and 5T. This year, the OnePlus 6 and likely soon to be the 6T. The leaks rarely lie anymore. So what can we expect from the next model? Quite a lot, actually. Though the company designs its own hardware and software, it leans on the supply chain of its parent, the Chinese electronics giant Oppo. As such, it's usually the case that OnePlus' phones are based loosely on Oppo's R series phones. For the OnePlus 6T, all signs point to the phone borrowing elements from Oppo's R17 Pro. Bigger screen, smaller notch The 6T is rumored to come with a larger 6.4-inch OLED display (the OnePlus 6 has a 6.28-inch screen). Screen resolution might be 2,340 x 1,080 — OnePlus has firmly stuck with a 1080p screen to keep costs lower, but also to balance power efficiency. You can see a bunch of alleged 6T box photos over on Slashleaks. Nerds will cry OnePlus is scrimping on pixels once again, but anyone who's ever used a OnePlus phone knows it's a nonissue. Besides, even though phones like Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Note 9 have QHD+ resolution screens, they're set to display in 1080p resolution out of the box. Which is, well, you can connect the dots. Most noticeable might be a smaller notch. The OnePlus 6 had one of the smaller phone notches and that's expected to shrink with Oppo's "waterdrop" notch design. Maybe next year when slider phones become more popular, the notch will disappear altogether. Fingerprint sensor built into display With the OnePlus 5T, the company moved the fingerprint reader from the front to the back to make way for a larger screen with slimmer bezels, and now it might move to embedding the sensor in the screen itself. Many Chinese phone makers like Oppo and Vivo are putting the fingerprint reader in the screen, but as my colleague Stan Schroeder has said in his reviews for these phones, they're a little slow. Don't get me wrong, in-display fingerprint sensors are getting faster with every new model, but until they're as fast as external ones, there may be still be some frustrations. OnePlus phones are known for their blazing-fast fingerprint sensors so, uh, fingers crossed the in-display sensor is just as fast (assuming this rumor is true). But even if the fingerprint reader is a tad slower than on the OnePlus 6, the 6T will likely still have the speedy face-unlock feature. It won't be as secure, but it'll do the trick. Flagship specs and improved cameras OnePlus is known for packing its phones with flagship specs, and the 6T won't be any different. We're expecting the phone to come with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 845 chip, 6GB and 8GB of RAM (just like on the current OnePlus 6) and storage configurations of at least 64GB, 128GB of 256GB. The only mystery is battery life. The OnePlus 6 has a 3,300 mAh battery. Will OnePlus follow Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 and bump the capacity up? We hope so. As for cameras, the 6T will likely continue to have a dual camera system on the rear. If it's based on the R17 Pro, then we might see a 12-megapixel main camera with variable f/1.5-2.4 aperture and a 20-megapixel second shooter. There might also be a new 3D sensor on the back for assisting with better depth detection (better for portrait photos and possibly augmented reality). In our OnePlus 6 review, I noted how the phone lacks certain flagship staples such as stereo speakers, wireless charging, and IP-rated water and dust resistance. I wouldn't bet on OnePlus including these features, since cost-cutting is often a priority for the value-driven brand, but anything could happen. We're also hoping the headphone jack sticks around, too. Pricing and release date The OnePlus 6 starts at $529 and while OnePlus could keep the same price, it's very likely the 6T will cost a few bucks more. We predict the phone will cost between $529 and $599 — more than the OnePlus 6, but still hundreds less than a Galaxy S9 or Pixel 2. With the leaks coming in fast, it's possible the 6T could launch in just a few weeks. The OnePlus 5T came out last November, which was less than six months after the OnePlus 5. One thing that might be different this year: It might launch on T-Mobile. OnePlus has sold its phones as unlocked devices that only work on GSM networks such as T-Mobile and AT&T (Verizon and Sprint operate on CDMA networks). But if the 6T launches with a U.S. carrier this year, it could make a bigger splash. |

| title | What is blockchain? The most disruptive tech in decades |
| body | The distributed ledger technology, better known as blockchain, has the potential to eliminate huge amounts of record-keeping, save money and disrupt IT in ways not seen since the internet arrived. Blockchain is poised to change IT in much the same way open-source software did a quarter of a century ago. And in the same way that Linux took more than a decade to become a cornerstone in modern application development, Blockchain will take years to become a lower cost, more efficient way to share information between open and private networks. Because blockchain is based on a distributed, peer-to-peer topology where data can be stored globally on thousands of servers – and anyone on the network can see everyone else's entries in real-time – it's virtually impossible for one entity to gain control of or game the network. But the hype around this seemingly new, secure electronic ledger is real. In essence, blockchain represents a new paradigm for the way information is shared and tech vendors and companies are rushing to figure out how they can use the distributed ledger technology to save time and admin costs. Numerous companies in 2017 began rolling out pilot programs and real-world projects across a variety of industries - everything from financial services to healthcare to mobile payments and even global shipping. It's unlikely to be a wholly disruptive technology that attacks traditional business models with a lower-cost solution that overtakes other networking technology quickly, according to Karim Lakhani, a professor of business administration at the Harvard Business School. Instead, Blockchain is a foundational technology, with the potential to create new foundations for economic and social systems, Lakhani said in The Truth About Blockchain, which he co-authored. In simple terms, blockchain isn't going to replace the corporate relational database, but it will create a new paradigm for transactional data within (and outside of) global enterprises. Blockchain adoption is expected be slow and steady, as the changes it brings gain momentum, according Lakhani, a principal investigator of the Crowd Innovation Lab and NASA Tournament Lab at the Harvard Institute for Quantitative Social Science. "Conceptionally, this is TCP/IP applied to the world of business and transactions," Lakhani said in an interview. "In the '70s and '80s, TCP/IP was not imaginable to be as robust and scalable as it was. Now, we know that TCP/IP allows us all this modern functionality that we take for granted on the web. "Blockchain has the same potential." What is blockchain? First and foremost, Blockchain is a public electronic ledger that can be openly shared among disparate users and that creates an unchangeable record of their transactions, each one time-stamped and linked to the previous one. Each digital record or transaction in the thread is called a block (hence the name), and it allows either an open or controlled set of users to participate in the electronic ledger. Each block is linked to a specific participant. Blockchain can only be updated by consensus between participants in the system, and when new data is entered, it can never be erased. The blockchain contains a true and verifiable record of each and every transaction ever made in the system. In layman's terms, blockchain is a write-once, append-many electronic ledger. Blockchain isn't a single technology. Rather it's an architecture that allows disparate users to make transactions and then creates an unchangeable record of those transactions. Blockchain isn't a single technology. Rather it's an architecture that allows disparate users to make transactions and then creates an unchangeable, secure record of those transactions While it has great potential, blockchain technology is in its infancy and CIOs and their business counterparts should expect setbacks in deploying the technology, including the real possibility of serious bugs in the software used atop blockchain to create business-specific applications – for example, a mobile payments system In another example, one of the most prevalent blockchain platforms, Ethereum, doesn't support the use of decimal points in its script for smart (self executing) contracts. Those coding a blockchain network would need to create a workaround. The Linux Foundation has created tools for building out blockchain collaboration networks. And in July, the open-source developer unveiled Hyperledger Fabric 1.0, a collaboration tool for building blockchain distributed ledger business networks, such as smart contracts. While some industry groups are working toward standardizing versions of blockchain software, there are also about 200 startups working on their own versions of the distributed ledger technology. Why is blockchain getting so much buzz? In a word, Bitcoin. Bitcoin is the wildly hyped cryptocurrency, a method of transacting payments over an open network using digital bits and encryption. It was the first ever decentralized one when it was created in 2009. Other forms of cryptocurrency or virtual money, such as Ether (based on the Ethereum blockchain application platform), have also sprung up and have opened new venues for cross-border monetary exchanges. The term bitcoin was first... well, coined in 2008 when Satoshi Nakamoto (likely a pseudonym for one or more developers) wrote a paper about a "peer-to-peer version of electronic cash that would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution." What does blockchain do? As a peer-to-peer network, combined with a distributed time-stamping server, blockchain ledgers can be managed autonomously to exchange information between disparate parties. There's no need for an administrator. In effect, the blockchain users are the administrator. Additionally, blockchain networks can be used for "smart contracts," or scripts that automatically execute when certain conditions are met. For example, Ethereum Ether exchange users must meet pre-determined conditions that prove someone owns the cryptocurrency and have authority to send the money they claim to own. In addition, multiple blockchain users can create contracts that require more than one set of inputs to trigger a transaction. One example: real estate transactions require sign offs between buyers, sellers and their financial institutions. Each digital record or transaction in the electronic ledger is called a block. When a block is completed, it creates a unique secure code that ties it to the next block. How secure is blockchain? While no system is "unhackable," blockchain's simple topology is the most secure today, according to Alex Tapscott, the CEO and founder of Northwest Passage Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in blockchain technology companies. "In order to move anything of value over any kind of blockchain, the network [of nodes] must first agree that that transaction is valid, which means no single entity can go in and say one way or the other whether or not a transaction happened," Tapscott said. "To hack it, you wouldn't just have to hack one system like in a bank..., you'd have to hack every single computer on that network, which is fighting against you doing that." The computing resources of most blockchains are tremendous, Tapscott said, because it's not just one computer but many. For example, the Bitcoin blockchain harnesses anywhere between 10 and 100 times as much computing power compared to all of Google's serving farms put together. As with any emerging technology, blockchain faces challenges and barriers to adoption "So again, [it's] not un-hackable, but significantly better than anything we've come up with today," Tapscott said. Public vs. private blockchains There are a variety of blockchain permutations, and they fall mainly into one of two categories - public or private. Public blockchains allow anyone to see or send transactions as long as they're part of the consensus process. There are also consortium blockchains, where only a pre-selected number of nodes are authorized to use the ledger. For example, a group of banks and their clearinghouse might use blockchain as part of the trade-clearing, where each node is associated with a step in the verification process. Private blockchains, in contrast, restrict the ability to write to a distributed ledger to one organization, such as a group of employees within a corporation, or between a set number of organizations, such as a number of banks that agree to a network partnership. Along the way, blockchain - because of its self-policing security - eliminates huge amounts of record keeping, which can get very confusing when multiple parties are involved in a transaction, according to Saurabh Gupta, vice president of strategy at IT services company Genpact. Which industries use blockchain? Shipping. Fintech. Healthcare, Energy. Blockchains are being put to a wide variety of uses in several industries. (Most recently it's been touted as a way to exchange carbon credits.) In shipping, for example, a bill of lading for cargo shipments has traditionally been paper based, which requires multiple sign-offs by inspectors and receivers before goods can be delivered. Even when the system is electronic, it still requires multiple parties to sign off on cargo shipments, creating a lengthy administrative process. To try and streamline that cumbersome process, the world's largest container shipment operator, Maersk, in March 2017 announced it is using a blockchain-based ledger to manage and track the paper trail of tens of millions of shipping containers by digitizing the supply chain. And Maersk has now teamed up with IBM on a new blockchain-based electronic shipping platform. It’s expected to be up and running later in 2018. Each participant in the shipping supply chain can view the progress of goods through the blockchain ledger, understanding where a container is in transit. They can also see the status of customs documents, or view bills of lading and other data in real time. And, because it creates an immutable record, no one party can modify, delete or even append any one of the blocks without the consensus from others on the network. "Blockchain and distributed ledgers may eventually be the method for integrating the entire commercial world's record keeping," Gupta said. Genpact, for example, announced a service for finance and accounting that leverages blockchain-based smart contracts to capture all terms and conditions between a customer and an organization for an order. Blockchain in FinTech But it's financial services technology where blockchain is currently shining brightly. At a high level, blockchain removes third parties from the transaction equation; in other words, a financial transaction on a blockchain needs no bank or government backer, and that means no fees. Because blockchain entries can be seen in real time, the technology also has the potential to reduce time for clearance and settlement, which can take up to five days. Accenture recently released a report claiming blockchain technology could reduce infrastructure costs for eight of the world's 10 largest investment banks by an average of 30%, "translating to $8 billion to $12 billion in annual cost savings for those banks." In the case of cross-border payments, processing is often complex and includes multiple layers of communication among payment participants to verify transactions - an operation known as payment and settlement. Payments, clearance and settlement in the financial services industry - including stock markets - is rife with inefficiencies because each organization in the process maintains its own data and must communicate with the others through electronic messaging about where it is in the process. As a result, settlements typically take two days. Those delays in settlements force banks to set aside money that could otherwise be invested. Because it can instantly share data with each organization involved in a blockchain database or ledger, the technology reduces or eliminates the need for reconciliation, confirmation and trade break analysis. That helps yield a more efficient and effective clearance and settlement process, according to Accenture. |

"title": "What is blockchain? The most disruptive tech in decades",
"body": "The distributed ledger technology, better known as blockchain, has the potential to eliminate huge amounts of record-keeping, save money and disrupt IT in ways not seen since the internet arrived.\n\n\n\nBlockchain is poised to change IT in much the same way open-source software did a quarter of a century ago. And in the same way that Linux took more than a decade to become a cornerstone in modern application development, Blockchain will take years to become a lower cost, more efficient way to share information between open and private networks.\n\nBecause blockchain is based on a distributed, peer-to-peer topology where data can be stored globally on thousands of servers – and anyone on the network can see everyone else's entries in real-time – it's virtually impossible for one entity to gain control of or game the network.\n\nBut the hype around this seemingly new, secure electronic ledger is real. In essence, blockchain represents a new paradigm for the way information is shared and tech vendors and companies are rushing to figure out how they can use the distributed ledger technology to save time and admin costs. Numerous companies in 2017 began rolling out pilot programs and real-world projects across a variety of industries - everything from financial services to healthcare to mobile payments and even global shipping.\n\nIt's unlikely to be a wholly disruptive technology that attacks traditional business models with a lower-cost solution that overtakes other networking technology quickly, according to Karim Lakhani, a professor of business administration at the Harvard Business School. Instead, Blockchain is a foundational technology, with the potential to create new foundations for economic and social systems, Lakhani said in The Truth About Blockchain, which he co-authored.\n\nIn simple terms, blockchain isn't going to replace the corporate relational database, but it will create a new paradigm for transactional data within (and outside of) global enterprises.\n\nBlockchain adoption is expected be slow and steady, as the changes it brings gain momentum, according Lakhani, a principal investigator of the Crowd Innovation Lab and NASA Tournament Lab at the Harvard Institute for Quantitative Social Science. \"Conceptionally, this is TCP/IP applied to the world of business and transactions,\" Lakhani said in an interview. \"In the '70s and '80s, TCP/IP was not imaginable to be as robust and scalable as it was. Now, we know that TCP/IP allows us all this modern functionality that we take for granted on the web.\n\n\"Blockchain has the same potential.\" \n\nWhat is blockchain?\n\n\nFirst and foremost, Blockchain is a public electronic ledger that can be openly shared among disparate users and that creates an unchangeable record of their transactions, each one time-stamped and linked to the previous one. Each digital record or transaction in the thread is called a block (hence the name), and it allows either an open or controlled set of users to participate in the electronic ledger. Each block is linked to a specific participant.\n\nBlockchain can only be updated by consensus between participants in the system, and when new data is entered, it can never be erased. The blockchain contains a true and verifiable record of each and every transaction ever made in the system.\n\nIn layman's terms, blockchain is a write-once, append-many electronic ledger.\n\nBlockchain isn't a single technology. Rather it's an architecture that allows disparate users to make transactions and then creates an unchangeable record of those transactions. \n\n\n\nBlockchain isn't a single technology. Rather it's an architecture that allows disparate users to make transactions and then creates an unchangeable, secure record of those transactions\n\nWhile it has great potential, blockchain technology is in its infancy and CIOs and their business counterparts should expect setbacks in deploying the technology, including the real possibility of serious bugs in the software used atop blockchain to create business-specific applications – for example, a mobile payments system\n\n\n\nIn another example, one of the most prevalent blockchain platforms, Ethereum, doesn't support the use of decimal points in its script for smart (self executing) contracts. Those coding a blockchain network would need to create a workaround.\n\nThe Linux Foundation has created tools for building out blockchain collaboration networks. And in July, the open-source developer unveiled Hyperledger Fabric 1.0, a collaboration tool for building blockchain distributed ledger business networks, such as smart contracts.\n\nWhile some industry groups are working toward standardizing versions of blockchain software, there are also about 200 startups working on their own versions of the distributed ledger technology.\n\nWhy is blockchain getting so much buzz? In a word, Bitcoin. Bitcoin is the wildly hyped cryptocurrency, a method of transacting payments over an open network using digital bits and encryption. It was the first ever decentralized one when it was created in 2009. Other forms of cryptocurrency or virtual money, such as Ether (based on the Ethereum blockchain application platform), have also sprung up and have opened new venues for cross-border monetary exchanges.\n\nThe term bitcoin was first... well, coined in 2008 when Satoshi Nakamoto (likely a pseudonym for one or more developers) wrote a paper about a \"peer-to-peer version of electronic cash that would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution.\"\n\nWhat does blockchain do?\nAs a peer-to-peer network, combined with a distributed time-stamping server, blockchain ledgers can be managed autonomously to exchange information between disparate parties. There's no need for an administrator. In effect, the blockchain users are the administrator.\n\nAdditionally, blockchain networks can be used for \"smart contracts,\" or scripts that automatically execute when certain conditions are met. For example, Ethereum Ether exchange users must meet pre-determined conditions that prove someone owns the cryptocurrency and have authority to send the money they claim to own. In addition, multiple blockchain users can create contracts that require more than one set of inputs to trigger a transaction.\n\nOne example: real estate transactions require sign offs between buyers, sellers and their financial institutions.\n\n\n\nEach digital record or transaction in the electronic ledger is called a block. When a block is completed, it creates a unique secure code that ties it to the next block.\n\nHow secure is blockchain?\n\nWhile no system is \"unhackable,\" blockchain's simple topology is the most secure today, according to Alex Tapscott, the CEO and founder of Northwest Passage Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in blockchain technology companies.\n\n\"In order to move anything of value over any kind of blockchain, the network [of nodes] must first agree that that transaction is valid, which means no single entity can go in and say one way or the other whether or not a transaction happened,\" Tapscott said. \"To hack it, you wouldn't just have to hack one system like in a bank..., you'd have to hack every single computer on that network, which is fighting against you doing that.\"\n\nThe computing resources of most blockchains are tremendous, Tapscott said, because it's not just one computer but many. For example, the Bitcoin blockchain harnesses anywhere between 10 and 100 times as much computing power compared to all of Google's serving farms put together.\n\n\n\nAs with any emerging technology, blockchain faces challenges and barriers to adoption\n\n\"So again, [it's] not un-hackable, but significantly better than anything we've come up with today,\" Tapscott said.\n\n\nPublic vs. private blockchains\n\n\nThere are a variety of blockchain permutations, and they fall mainly into one of two categories - public or private. Public blockchains allow anyone to see or send transactions as long as they're part of the consensus process. There are also consortium blockchains, where only a pre-selected number of nodes are authorized to use the ledger. For example, a group of banks and their clearinghouse might use blockchain as part of the trade-clearing, where each node is associated with a step in the verification process.\n\nPrivate blockchains, in contrast, restrict the ability to write to a distributed ledger to one organization, such as a group of employees within a corporation, or between a set number of organizations, such as a number of banks that agree to a network partnership.\n\nAlong the way, blockchain - because of its self-policing security - eliminates huge amounts of record keeping, which can get very confusing when multiple parties are involved in a transaction, according to Saurabh Gupta, vice president of strategy at IT services company Genpact.\n\nWhich industries use blockchain?\n\nShipping. Fintech. Healthcare, Energy. Blockchains are being put to a wide variety of uses in several industries. (Most recently it's been touted as a way to exchange carbon credits.)\n\nIn shipping, for example, a bill of lading for cargo shipments has traditionally been paper based, which requires multiple sign-offs by inspectors and receivers before goods can be delivered. It’s expected to be up and running later in 2018.\n\n\nEach participant in the shipping supply chain can view the progress of goods through the blockchain ledger, understanding where a container is in transit. They can also see the status of customs documents, or view bills of lading and other data in real time. And, because it creates an immutable record, no one party can modify, delete or even append any one of the blocks without the consensus from others on the network.\n\n\"Blockchain and distributed ledgers may eventually be the method for integrating the entire commercial world's record keeping,\" Gupta said.\n\nGenpact, for example, announced a service for finance and accounting that leverages blockchain-based smart contracts to capture all terms and conditions between a customer and an organization for an order.\n\nBlockchain in FinTech\nBut it's financial services technology where blockchain is currently shining brightly.\n\nAt a high level, blockchain removes third parties from the transaction equation; in other words, a financial transaction on a blockchain needs no bank or government backer, and that means no fees.\n\nBecause blockchain entries can be seen in real time, the technology also has the potential to reduce time for clearance and settlement, which can take up to five days.\n\nAccenture recently released a report claiming blockchain technology could reduce infrastructure costs for eight of the world's 10 largest investment banks by an average of 30%, \"translating to $8 billion to $12 billion in annual cost savings for those banks.\"\n\nIn the case of cross-border payments, processing is often complex and includes multiple layers of communication among payment participants to verify transactions - an operation known as payment and settlement.\n\nPayments, clearance and settlement in the financial services industry - including stock markets - is rife with inefficiencies because each organization in the process maintains its own data and must communicate with the others through electronic messaging about where it is in the process. As a result, settlements typically take two days. Those delays in settlements force banks to set aside money that could otherwise be invested.\n\nBecause it can instantly share data with each organization involved in a blockchain database or ledger, the technology reduces or eliminates the need for reconciliation, confirmation and trade break analysis. That helps yield a more efficient and effective clearance and settlement process, according to Accenture.",
