It first came to proper mainstream attention thanks to the efforts of one Ross Ulbricht, who adopted it as his currency of choice for his online emporium of magical substances, known as the Silk Road. Ulbricht built bitcoin into his drug marketplace because it was ideally suited to the job: it could be used anonymously, and transactions were both speedy and irreversible (avoiding the problems of merchants being hit with chargebacks and being forced to put in support calls to PayPal - an insult no drug dealer should be forced to endure).\n\nLibertarian origins\n\nIn fact, it seems possible that such illicit use is in bitcoin’s DNA: a recent article by Andrew O’Hagan exploring Craig Wright’s connections with the virtual currency notes early links between Wright, his partner Dave Kleiman, and Ulbricht. There’s a suggestion that Kleiman may have helped create not only bitcoin but the drugstore that was its first major application. ‘Matthews told me about a meeting at the Bondi Iceberg Club in Sydney that Wright had with Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, now serving two life sentences. Silk Road used bitcoin to trade all kinds of contraband items because the transactions could be made anonymously. Wright later confirmed that this meeting took place, but said only that Ulbricht was full of himself and they didn’t discuss bitcoin. Matthews seemed to think this was unlikely. He wondered whether Kleiman had had more to do with Ulbricht; other sources suggested the same.’\n\nToday, bitcoin is still used to buy illegal drugs online, but the volume of transactions is small. It was never really that large; back in 2013, a report suggested that around 0.5% of bitcoin transactions were used to buy drugs. The estimate was that some $50 million per year in bitcoin was being spent on drugs. That’s a relative drop in the ocean; as the article concludes, ‘Wikipedia claims that the illegal drug trade constitutes 1% of world GDP. Bitcoin seems to underindex to other payment mechanisms for buying drugs.’ Remember, too, that this was before the Silk Road was taken down, and at least one other popular online drug marketplace collapsed.\n\nDice\n\nGambling is bitcoin's biggest current real-world application\n\nGambling\n\nBut bitcoin hasn’t yet broken free from its libertarian and shadowy past. It turns out that some 50-60% of bitcoin transactions are now made in the context of gambling. \n\nThe reasons are obvious. Just like the Silk Road, these sites need to keep a low profile from regulators and law enforcers, since most of them operate illegally. Their owners don’t want to deal with chargebacks, and their customers need a degree of anonymity. The nature of bitcoin means deposits and payouts can be made almost immediately and essentially for nothing, compared to the time taken to make an international transfer and the costs involved.       "body": "Everyone involved in the cryptocurrency space is watching the price of bitcoin very closely these past few weeks. One person watching the value of bitcoin rise is the former CEO of the now-defunct Mt Gox bitcoin exchange. Mark Karpeles says he’s “monitoring the situation” as the Mt Gox bankruptcy may seemingly become solvent thanks to rising price of bitcoin.\n\nAlso Read: Bitcoin Network Hashrate Surpasses Four Exahash Per Second\n\nCan the Mt Gox Bankruptcy Become Solvent?\n\nBitcoin's Price Rise Brings Mt Gox Closer to SolvencyLast week a post on the subreddit r/mtgoxinsolvency detailed that “Mt Gox reached around 78.5 percent of the claims value today.” The person also asked the former CEO what would happen if bitcoin’s price makes it to 100 percent of the claims value. Karpeles appeared on the Reddit thread detailing his interest concerning the current situation. The former Mt Gox executive says because Coinlab is suing the company it really makes the claims value around 59 percent. Coinlab, the venture-backed blockchain company, has sued Mt Gox for $75 million before the company went bankrupt.  \n\nKarpeles is Monitoring the Situation\n\nBitcoin's Price Rise Brings Mt Gox Closer to Solvency“I am monitoring the situation,” explains Mark Karpeles. “We are still around 59.92% (74.29% if excluding CoinLab – but it can’t be excluded as the lawsuit is still in progress). Remember to use JPY values for calculation, since USD is bound to not be exact.”\n\nFollowing this statement, bitcoin developer Lukejr asks Karpeles if there is a “real possibility Mt Gox can exit bankruptcy if it reaches 100%?”  \n\n“Yep, but not to reopen as Mt Gox,” Karpeles replies. “The idea would be to establish some kind of trust to distribute BTC outside of the bankruptcy process, allowing for their easy distribution. The plan is to have recovered bitcoins distributed as is to BTC creditors, on the address they provided to receive the original payments.”\n\nAs things are right now, creditors cannot receive more than the approved claim amount (in JPY), which means that future recovered bitcoins would potentially be distributed to shareholders instead.\n‘The Inability to Compete With Today’s Exchanges’\n\nMany people discussing the subject on the forum were quite pleased with hearing Karpeles responses to questions. People further asked what the possibility was of Mt Gox re-opening and offering creditors a chance to become company shareholders as well as possibly cover the cost of some of the missing bitcoins.\n\n“That is an alternative, but it would involve re-launching Mt Gox, which would probably not work for many reasons,” Karpeles explains. “Having a trust set up and distribution list kept for distribution of recovered assets is perfectly legal, has no running cost and be fair. Compliance cost in the US is way outside of Coinlab’s reach, and I’d be surprised to hear Coinlab was ever planning to be compliant.\n\nAnyway, the largest reason why Mt Gox cannot be relaunched is the brand image, followed by the inability to compete with today’s exchanges.\n100 Percent Value Must be Met Before Starting the Process  \n\nThe discussion seemed very positive for those who lost funds during the bitcoin exchange’s hack in 2013 which was followed by bankruptcy. Karpeles then goes on to explain that most of the process cannot begin until the 100 percent threshold is met.
