| title | lo Scientists Explain Love at First Sight |
| body | 56% of Americans believe in love at first sight, and every third person reports that he or she has experienced it. This is hardly surprising given the fact that art and literature have glorified it for thousands of years. But what exactly is it and does it have a universal definition? A 2017 study from the University of Groningen has given us some empirical insights to burst our romantic bubbles. Previous research has labeled love at first sight (LAFS) as a “positive illusion” or a biased memory couples create in order to enhance their relationship. This sounds completely plausible given the fact that we are prone to outcome bias - evaluating the quality of a decision based on the outcome. So, if we end up with someone, our belief that we knew this all along, from the very first moment, is going to strengthen. Similarly, if we don’t end up with someone, it is highly likely we will not assign the label of LAFS to that encounter at all. Indeed, 92% of 558 people who claimed to have experienced LAFS reported that they later fell in mutual love with this person and developed a romantic relationship with them. However, this explanation accounts neither for the 8% who did not develop a relationship nor for instances of unrequited LAFS. Another mechanism of creating the illusion of LAFS is the tendency of couples to project their current feelings back to the first moment they met. After all, psychology has shown us that we are story-making creatures who tend to view their past in light of the present, underestimating changes that occur over time. Then there is the link between physical attraction and love at first sight, especially when we are first meeting someone new. In fact, studies show that physical attraction at zero acquaintance predicts the outcomes of speed-dating sessions very well, and being physically attracted to someone predicts whether or not we will report experiencing LAFS. In addition, physical attractiveness carries with itself the so-called “halo effect” -- our tendency to assign more positive personality traits to people we find physically attractive. This positively biased evaluation of someone we find attractive may contribute to the illusion of experiencing LAFS. To examine whether the above hypotheses about LAFS are true, the authors of the study What kind of love is love at first sight? An empirical investigation, collected data in three different contexts: online, in the lab, and at three dating events from a total of 396 participants with a mean age of 24.18 years. The participants were asked to fill out questionnaires either about their current partners or about potential ones they met in person or saw in pictures. They had to report whether they had experienced love at first sight, physical attraction, and also which components of love they experienced: intimacy, commitment, passion and eros (a style of love characterized by high passion and intensity). The results showed that, indeed, experiencing physical attraction highly correlates with experiencing LAFS. In fact, the data showed that 1-unit increase in attractiveness ratings lead to a chance of LAFS about 9 times as high. Interestingly, men were more likely to experience LAFS on the spot. In couples, reporting love at first sight retroactively was most strongly correlated with eros, then passion, followed by commitment. This correlation was not observed in people who met for the first time. Finally, the researchers found out that people who reported experiencing love at first sight were “stark outliers.” Most of the respondents strongly disagreed with the statement and there wasn’t even a single instance of reciprocal LAFS, where two people reported experiencing the feeling for each other. This may be the reason why people usually recall such an event as only occurring once in their life. “LAFS might sometimes be one-sided initially, and this might serve as a basis for the development of mutual LAFS as a construed memory in the couple. The perceiver might “convince” the LAFS target of their mutual LAFS across the trajectory of relationship development. This might be enhanced by the cognitive biases of couples in love.” Ultimately, it appears that love at first sight is simply a strong initial attraction, the idea of which could also be fabricated once we are in a couple through biased memories. This may not be such a bad thing, however. The authors note that people who report LAFS with a partner (who have created this memory together) tend to experience more love and passion in their relationship. |

| body | Olive Oil Is Rich in Healthy Monounsaturated Fats Olive oil is the natural oil extracted from olives, the fatty fruit of the olive tree. About 24% of the oil is saturated fats and omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (1). But the predominant (73%) fatty acid in olive oil is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid, which is extremely healthy. Oleic acid is believed to help reduce inflammation, and may have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer (2, 3, 4, 5). Monounsaturated fats in extra virgin olive oil are also quite resistant to high heat, making it a healthy choice for cooking. Bottom Line: Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid. This fatty acid is believed to have many beneficial effects, and is a healthy choice for cooking. 2. Olive Oil Contains Large Amounts of Antioxidants Extra virgin olive oil is fairly nutritious. Apart from its beneficial fatty acids, it contains modest amounts of Vitamins E and K. But olive oil is also loaded with powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants are biologically active and may help fight serious diseases (6, 7). This includes antioxidants that can fight inflammation and help prevent the cholesterol in our blood from becoming oxidized, both crucial steps in the heart disease process (8, 9). 3.Olive Oil Has Strong Anti-Inflammatory Properties Chronic inflammation is thought to be among the leading drivers of many diseases. This includes cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, Alzheimer's, arthritis and even obesity. Olive oil can reduce inflammation, which may be one of the main reasons for its health benefits. The main anti-inflammatory effects are mediated by the antioxidants. Key among them is oleocanthal, which has been shown to work similarly to ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug (10). Some scientists estimate that the oleocanthal in 50 ml (3.4 tablespoons) of extra virgin olive oil has a similar effectiveness as 10% of the adult dosage of ibuprofen (11). There are also studies suggesting that oleic acid itself, the main fatty acid in olive oil, can reduce levels of important inflammatory markers like CRP (2, 3). One study also showed that olive oil antioxidants can inhibit some genes and proteins that drive inflammation (12). 4.Olive Oil May Help Prevent Strokes Stroke is caused by a disturbance of blood flow to the brain, either due to a blood clot or bleeding. In developed nations, stroke is the second most common cause of death, right after heart disease (13). The relationship between olive oil and the risk of stroke has been studied extensively. A large review study that included over 841,000 subjects found that olive oil was the only source of monounsaturated fat associated with a reduced risk of stroke and heart disease (14). These findings are supported by another large review study, this one with 140,000 participants. Researchers found that those who consumed olive oil were at a much lower risk of stroke (15). 5.Olive Oil Is Protective Against Heart Disease Heart disease is the most common cause of death in the world (16). Observational studies conducted a few decades ago showed that heart disease was rare around the Mediterranean Sea. This led to extensive research on the Mediterranean diet, which has now been shown to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease (17, 18). Extra virgin olive oil is one of the key features of this diet, and protects against heart disease via numerous mechanisms (19). It lowers inflammation, protects LDL cholesterol from oxidation, improves the function of the lining of the blood vessels, and may help prevent unwanted blood clotting (20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25). Interestingly, it has also been shown to lower blood pressure, which is one of the strongest risk factors for heart disease and premature death. In one study, olive oil reduced the need for blood pressure meds by 48% (26, 27, 28). The truth is that dozens, if not hundreds, of studies have shown that extra virgin olive oil has powerful benefits for the heart. If you have heart disease, a family history of heart disease, or any other major risk factor, then you might want to consider including plenty of extra virgin olive oil in your diet. 6.Olive Oil Does Not Cause Weight Gain and Obesity Eating fat does not make you fat, and olive oil is no exception. Numerous studies have linked Mediterranean dietary patterns, rich in olive oil, with favorable effects on body weight (29, 30, 31). In a 2.5 year study of more than 7000 Spanish college students, consuming a lot of olive oil was not linked to increased weight (32). In other words, high intake of olive oil is not linked with weight gain or obesity in observational studies. A 3-year study in 187 participants found that a diet rich in olive oil increased levels of antioxidants in the blood and caused weight loss (33). 7.Olive Oil May Help Fight Alzheimer's Disease Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world. One of its key features is a buildup of so-called beta amyloid plaques inside brain cells. One study in mice showed that a substance in olive oil can help remove these plaques from brain cells (34). Another study, this time in humans, showed that a Mediterranean diet with olive oil had beneficial effects on brain function (35). 8.Olive Oil May Reduce the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Olive oil appears to be highly protective against diabetes. Several studies have linked olive oil to beneficial effects on blood sugar and insulin sensitivity (36, 37). A randomized clinical trial of 418 non-diabetic participants recently confirmed the protective effects of olive oil (38). In this study, a Mediterranean diet with olive oil reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by over 40%. 9.The Antioxidants in Olive Oil Have Anti-Cancer Properties Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in the world. People in Mediterranean countries have a lower risk of some cancers, and many researchers believe that olive oil may have something to do with it (39). The antioxidants in olive oil can reduce oxidative damage due to free radicals, which is believed to be one of the leading drivers of cancer (40, 41). Many test tube studies have shown that compounds in olive oil can help fight cancer cells (42, 43). Whether olive oil can actually help to prevent cancer needs to be studied properly in humans. 10.Olive Oil Can Help Treat Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterized by deformed and painful joints. The exact cause is not well understood, but it involves the body's immune system attacking normal cells by mistake. Olive oil supplementation appears to improve inflammatory markers and reduce oxidative stress in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (44, 45). Olive oil appears to be particularly beneficial when combined with fish oil, a source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. In one study, olive oil and fish oil significantly reduced joint pain, handgrip strength and morning stiffness in people with rheumatoid arthritis (46). 11.Olive Oil Has Anti-Bacterial Properties Olive oil contains many nutrients that can inhibit or kill harmful bacteria (47). One of these is Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that lives in the stomach and can cause stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Test tube studies have shown extra virgin olive oil to be effective against eight strains of this bacteria, three of which are resistant to antibiotics (48). A study in humans showed that 30 grams of extra virgin olive oil can eliminate Helicobacter pylori infection in 10-40% of people in as little as 2 weeks (49). |

| title | When You Lose Weight, Where Does the Fat Go? |
| body | Fat has made a comeback of late. Of course, the fat on everyone’s mind is dietary fat, those nine calories per gram advocated by fans of the ketogenic diet. The fat we carry around inside of our bodies is a different story. Not that fat hasn’t previously been in vogue. Carrying around a little extra was once considered a sign of wealth—those pounds meant you could afford to eat well. Humans being humans, we then took it to the other extreme when the fashion world became fascinated with anorexic models. As they infiltrated popular culture, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety ravaged our consciousness. We still haven’t self-corrected from that swerve. The connection between wealth and fat is not surprising. Storing excess money in your bank account is a sign of financial success; your body stores fats and carbohydrates so that you never run out of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecules that serve as batteries in your body’s cells. Your body’s account needs ATP in case a debit becomes necessary. Good fat and bad fat What we’re looking for at a healthy weight is proper energy balance—enough stored energy for when you need it, not so much that it collects in the form of visceral fat, mostly around your belly. Too little stored fat and you run into reproductive problems, which is why our bodies are good at storing fat. Too much, our main problem today, and we suffer the long list of metabolic, cardiovascular, and immune issues clogging hospital corridors. Fat, remember, is necessary for good health. Your body stores some fat cells in your liver and some in your muscles. A lot of them are used for resting metabolic processes—around 1,300 to 1,600 calories worth daily. The remainder is spread throughout your body in the form of adipocytes; each of us carries around tens of billions of these fat cells. The cells stored beneath your skin are subcutaneous fat, which we need. Visceral fat is the problem, as these cells act differently in your body. When visceral fat collects around your midsection, the excess energy is also collecting a variety of vitamins, hormones, and toxins, the latter in an attempt to keep them away from your organs. This might seem positive, but in the long run this storage of pollutants and toxins can be, well, toxic, especially if you lose weight too quickly. visceral and subcutaneous fat, Mayo Clinic Image source: Mayo Clinic. Where does the fat go? Where do you lose weight in the first place? Mostly, through breathing. While the concept of “burning” fat is not altogether wrong, losing fat involves plenty of carbon dioxide leaving your body. As the Washington Post explains: Your fat “goes” into the atmosphere. (And no, it doesn’t contribute to global warming.) When it does go, you’re also releasing the extra storage of vitamins and toxins along with it. That might not sound like a good thing, but in the long run it’s far better to be rid of them. As Popular Science states, organochlorine pesticides, among other pollutants, are known to get bound up in fat—they leak into our food supply: Bodies don’t seem to store enough of these to become toxic, but the constant build-up leaves you vulnerable to exposure. And they do start to re-emerge when you lose weight. By losing weight at a healthy pace (1-2 pounds a week), the limited number of pollutants released will not overload your bloodstream. Your urine will make quick work of them. Extreme dieting is a different story. The more weight you lose, the more of these toxins (as well as vitamins and, in women, estrogen; excessive vitamins can be deadly, while increased estrogen stored in fat increases your chances of breast cancer) enter your bloodstream. Since we no longer face the same problem as our ancestors—most of us don’t have to worry about whether or not we’ll eat tonight, or tomorrow—fat storage plays a different role in our bodies than previously. Many avoidable health problems are due to this excessive storage of energy, hormones and toxins. Some researchers claim 70 percent of our medical problems can be addressed through a healthier lifestyle, which includes eating better and moving more. As a bonus, the fat being returned into the atmosphere through breathing eventually becomes fuel for plants, one of the main foods we want to put back inside of our bodies. That’s what we call a harmonious cycle, one we evolved because of, and one that remains necessary for optimal health today. |

The remainder is spread throughout your body in the form of adipocytes; each of us carries around tens of billions of these fat cells. \n\nThe cells stored beneath your skin are subcutaneous fat, which we need. Visceral fat is the problem, as these cells act differently in your body. When visceral fat collects around your midsection, the excess energy is also collecting a variety of vitamins, hormones, and toxins, the latter in an attempt to keep them away from your organs. This might seem positive, but in the long run this storage of pollutants and toxins can be, well, toxic, especially if you lose weight too quickly.\n\nvisceral and subcutaneous fat, Mayo Clinic\nImage source: Mayo Clinic.\nWhere does the fat go?\n\nWhere do you lose weight in the first place? Mostly, through breathing. While the concept of “burning” fat is not altogether wrong, losing fat involves plenty of carbon dioxide leaving your body. As the Washington Post explains: \n\nYour fat “goes” into the atmosphere. (And no, it doesn’t contribute to global warming.) When it does go, you’re also releasing the extra storage of vitamins and toxins along with it. That might not sound like a good thing, but in the long run it’s far better to be rid of them. \n\nAs Popular Science states, organochlorine pesticides, among other pollutants, are known to get bound up in fat—they leak into our food supply: \n\n Bodies don’t seem to store enough of these to become toxic, but the constant build-up leaves you vulnerable to exposure. And they do start to re-emerge when you lose weight.\n\nBy losing weight at a healthy pace (1-2 pounds a week), the limited number of pollutants released will not overload your bloodstream. \n\nSince we no longer face the same problem as our ancestors—most of us don’t have to worry about whether or not we’ll eat tonight, or tomorrow—fat storage plays a different role in our bodies than previously. Many avoidable health problems are due to this excessive storage of energy, hormones and toxins. Some researchers claim 70 percent of our medical problems can be addressed through a healthier lifestyle, which includes eating better and moving more. \n\nAs a bonus, the fat being returned into the atmosphere through breathing eventually becomes fuel for plants, one of the main foods we want to put back inside of our bodies. That’s what we call a harmonious cycle, one we evolved because of, and one that remains necessary for optimal health today.",
