bodyHow a Zimbabwean with a little knowledge of history became the happiest camper on an Ethiopian Air flight en route to Cameroon. http://www.fabafriq.com/images/westin/1.jpg I have never felt happier being a Zimbabwean among foreign nationals in foreign lands. So the other day I got on an Ethiopian Air flight at Harare International Airport, kicking and screaming, and for good reason too, it was 2 am in the morning. These are by any standard witching hours, no one should ever pass this period with their eyes wide open, infact is it even legal to fly people anywhere at that hour? Anyway I digress, this is not even where my story is, and besides my story is much more positive. My share in this piece begins when I then get onto my connecting flight at Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport in Ethiopia, enroute to Yaounde, Cameroon. As if I had not been abused enough travelling from Harare in the wee witching hours, I am cursed to be on the dreaded middle seat. Cameroon being part of francophone Africa, Frenchmen on such flights are hardly a rarity. So on the one side sat a heavily bearded Caucasian Frenchman clad in a while Al Capone had, while on the other sat a well kempt, rather sophisticated looking native Cameroonian. Of course being Zimbabwean, we are quick to pick up on accents and definitely not shy to double check this against fact, so this is how I know incase you were asking. I hated being in the middle. So anyway off went the courtesy conversation: So, you sound french, are you?, what takes you to Cameroon blah blah?. So once these laboured rituals are out of the way, I take a silent sigh of relief and order a glass of red wine, first to break the awkward in the nothing-more-to-say moment that had suddenly crept in and second, to serenade myself with the sight of the ravishing Ethiopian Air flight attendants; they never fail to impress. So as the wine sinks in and settles in the cockpit of my sanity, conversation now more naturally starts to flow, less forced and carefree. So it turns out the Frenchman is actually a professor of anthropology and is quite well read as well in French history. And what a chance it was for me to shift to a higher gear show-off what I once thought was useless history class in high school. Such is the Zimbabwe education system, it takes you through the history of not only Africa but of Europe in detail, but you can only respect the value of such when you speak to nationals of these countries. So as the flight was long we ran through French History from Kings Louis the XIV right through to present day France. And of course the Cameroonian couldn’t resist, in-between catnaps smuggling in his views in a very captivating discussion that I had become de facto moderator. Five hours flew faster than the plane, as we argued about the French colonial policy of assimilation, contemporary French politics punctuated with more and more bottles of red wine courtesy of the scintillating air-hostess. Occasionally she returned to turn down the volume on the discussion as the back row to our seat joined in. The professor relentless in his pursuit to graduate us in his opinion became the loudest. Of course having studied not only the French history of monarchies but also their colonial empire I found myself very resourceful in balancing the discussion. Ofcourse until I had to answer to the call of nature, when I then retreated to the back of the cabin where the a whole bevy of the hostesses where chatting away the rest of the flight after serving passengers. I had not the slightest intention of having conversation with them until one of them sort of rudely asks me why we are making so much noise for the rest of the passengers. Coming after one drink too many, my response is dismissive shot from the hip, unmeasured and blunt, without any expectation of further engagement; “We are discussing the French Monarchies Empire you know, like you guys had Emperor Haile Selassie, Tewodros and the likes of Menelik” To my surprise the blue-eyed hostess morphs into an enthusiast and excitedly asks me how I could know about Ethiopian history. Of course there is an obvious and simple answer to this, but why pass up such a chance to barter-trade all those years of seemingly useless lessons with some discretionary Sweet Red wine. Chances are ofcourse the hostesses couldn’t care less about about history, but of course the allure was that a foreigner knew more than they did, and this made me somewhat of an enigmatic interest. And so I launch into the history of the Solomonic Abyssinian empire and subconsciously the little bottles of wine roll effortlessly off the cabin shelf and spill into my mouth. Naturally I lost count and by the time I arrive in Yaoundé am clearly the happiest camper on the flight.

bodyMy thoughts are around the skills that young Africans need to make it as start-ups. While I agree that multiple degrees do not necessarily equal business acumen, it is still necessary to be well read and have a broad understanding of a range of issues. In my view the average young entrepreneur in Africa is still very much subordinate to their peers in the US, Europe and Asia in terms of the requisite skill set to make as a start-up.

bodyhttps://www.theladders.com/career-advice/wp-content/uploads/The-Resume-Litmus-Test-651x326.png For many years working in middle management for various organizations, I have had a jolly good time reviewing résumés from college graduands hopeful to land their first job. A good many such résumés were rib crackers for days, not sharing would be criminal on my part. Over the last decade Zimbabwe’s economy has been in sharp recession experiencing negative growth resulting in a shrinking job market. Sustained economic decline has led to unemployment figures of around 90%, versus a highly educated population. In such an environment an impressive résumé definitely draws a hard separation line between the hopeful employables and the hapless loafers. Infact in my years of recruitment I have seen all sorts of résumés, some, such a glove-fit you would think the job description was fashioned out of the hopeful candidate’s résumé. On the other hand, some so jaw-droppingly ridiculous you would swear you were on a reality television show and someone was just going to show up and tell you it's a bluff, they are really not serious about landing the job. Be that as it may, there are parts of the many résumés I reviewed that never failed to make my day. There was all too often a tendency by novice employment hopefuls to turn the résumé into a piece of creative writing bordering on fiction. So it's an unwritten rule in the recruitment practice that the perfect candidate is not just about impressive past experiences and a great academic profile, but also the softer aspects, like what the candidate does in their free time, this makes the candidate more human. So generally the this human face of the candidate this is found under the Hobbies Section. So I came across a number of candidates who would write: **Hobbies:** _Sky-Diving, SCUBA Diving, Skiing, Ice Hockey, Horse Riding._ So this would be me thinking... “What? Are you kidding me? Are those really your hobbies? Am sure this must be a cut and paste job gone sour. You and I both know that you have never been on a plane in your life let alone skydive. The only flying you have ever done is off the handle” “Seriously SCUBA-diving? the only time your head has ever been completely under water was during your baptism at church at a local river, the bucket you use for your regular bath does not afford you such luxury. Horse Riding? Purleeeeease, the closest you have ever come to a live breathing horse is that mule you abused with an overload during harvest season. Make believe exotic hobbies you have never done (most likely will never do) will not increase your chances of getting the job, they will just make your résumé all the more rib-cracking” Had I been afforded the opportunity to meet with some of these hopefuls I would have assured them that it was perfectly normal and okay to mention real hobbies undertaken and indeed unashamedly enjoyed by ordinary Zimbabwean folk living Africa, such as watching TV, going to church, gossiping with friends and neighbors, abusing your spouse, boozers soccer, knitting, reading the newspaper etc. I would have motivated for purging that very thought of wanting to assume that your hobby is cycling, running or hiking, No! No! No!, that is your means of getting to work, your mode of transport and not a hobby. **Experience:** _Highly experienced professional with relevant skills._ So I would wonder... “You are educated, yes, just completed your undergraduate degree which you undertook straight from high school, so No! No! No! you are not “highly experienced” rather say “as green as chlorophyll but willing to learn”. The only experience you have is plagiarized mediocre-mark assignments and assuming you are the coolest thing that ever walked through varsity, welcome to the real world, we actually need to see demonstrable experience” **References:** _Professor Johns._ “You did not graduate top of your class, so in order for Prof Johns to actually remember you from hundreds of other students he taught for just a semester, you would have had to be either extremely smart or supernaturally dull, otherwise he just won't remember you enough to be a good reference, else your best bet from college is the janitor. Rather choose someone who really knows you individually not merely as a registration number on a term paper. And refrain from that shameless and blasphemous act of name- dropping a high profile figure as your reference, simply motivated by that single chance encounter you had with them and you said hello to them (trust me they really have no clue who are, neither do they care). And you can be as sure as hell your potential employers are not going to embarrass themselves calling them you are better off disabusing yourself of that toxic fantasy. If you are really hard pressed, and need a reference with a bit of clout, that your church Pastor will do just fine, even your friend”. Other its well known you are fresh from college and may not have any heavyweight references. **_Just my thoughts, nothing personal!_**

**_Just my thoughts, nothing personal!_**

bodyMy name is Miraramitatu (Three Lines), which is drawn from the recital of my family/clan totem, Hwesa which is a very small wild mouse, with three lines on its back, almost like nature’s adidas. Association with totems is a very strong cultural tradition here in Zimbabwe, and carries with it scared symbolism. Totems are a source of family pride and ignorance of one’s totem as a Zimbabwean is frowned upon and demeans one’s social standing. https://www.colourbox.com/preview/1613629-wild-mouse-sitting-on-a-branch.jpg The most common totems (mitupo in the shona language) draw from the animal kingdom, with examples like the lion (gushungo), the zebra (tembo), the eland (mhofu), the bird (hungwe), the crocodile (ngwena), the monkey (soko), the snake (mheta) and a few from body parts such as the leg (gumbo) and the heart (moyo). In Zimbabwe there are about 25 clearly distinguishable totem lines. A child is born bearing the father's totem as is common practice with last names. As our Zimbabwean culture is very highly patriarchal, successive generations of a family carry on and connect to their family roots more through the totems than through last names. Totems are part of a strong oral tradition and therefore are hardly ever found written on any official documents like birth certificates or any other identification documents. So every Zimbabwean with the exception of those who may not be in touch with their patriarchal side will know their totem and will be proud to be associated with it. During my kindergarten years, I used to delight in watching the animated cartoon series [**_Visionaries- Knights of the magical light_**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visionaries:_Knights_of_the_Magical_Light) which I think is probably one of the best ways of describing this Zimbabwean cultural tradition to anyone who might not be familiar with it. In the animated series, the characters are bestowed with powers to transform into animals which mirror their characters as individuals. According to the greybeard autochthons of our culture, members of the same totem line exhibit shared character traits that resemble very closely the behavior of their totem animal. So while totem holders may not transform into animals, it is believed they live these animals everyday. http://statici.behindthevoiceactors.com/behindthevoiceactors/_img/shows/banner_231.jpg Totems however, also had (and still do) have a more straightforward and less debatable function. For instance, before you start seriously dating a potential suitor it is casual common practice to ask each other’s totem, as a way of avoiding inbreeding and incest. This works better than last names, which are thought of as easily corruptible over generations. Other functions include the use of the totems as identity markers for identifying the ruling class from subjects. The practice of totemism also contributed historically to the preservation of biodiversity since it is taboo to consume or harm one’s own totem animal. As a way of honouring and preserving the totem animals, legend has it that if you eat your own totem, you risk all your teeth falling out including many other unspecified actions meted out by departed ancestors. For this reason, I dare not tempt the ancestral spirits of the Hwesa clan, lest they call my bluff. Each totem comes with it a full sonnet-like poetic recital used to recognize the presence of a totem holder as a way of conferring the highest level of honour, praise, and gratitude for good deeds. Wives honor husbands in this way, and the reverse, mothers (who are of a different totem) honour their sons by reciting the special poetic verses. True to the totem, very distinguishable character traits run through the members of the Hwesa clan. Women of the Hwesa totem are known for their intelligent and exude exceptional leadership qualities, excelling in whatever environment you put them. Humility and selflessness come naturally. They are relentless hard workers and are extremely patient, and we proud of these our aunties and sisters. The men on the other hand are recognized by their effortless easy going and loving nature, witty use of humour and diligence. They have a high affinity for and assimilation of new knowledge and information. Hwesa men have an unparalleled culinary skill set complimented by a highly evolved sense of taste and smell. As a Hwesa myself, I identify as a free-thinker, colour dreamer and lover of food, traits that I like to believe are a reflection of the Hwesa (wild mouse). As a jovial Hwesa, I firmly believe that no one can ruin my day without my consent and I approach life’s challenges with mental agility and optimism.

As a way of honouring and preserving the totem animals, legend has it that if you eat your own totem, you risk all your teeth falling out including many other unspecified actions meted out by departed ancestors. For this reason, I dare not tempt the ancestral spirits of the Hwesa clan, lest they call my bluff.\n\nEach totem comes with it a full sonnet-like poetic recital used to recognize the presence of a totem holder as a way of conferring the highest level of honour, praise, and gratitude for good deeds. Wives honor husbands in this way, and the reverse, mothers (who are of a different totem) honour their sons by reciting the special poetic verses.\n\nTrue to the totem, very distinguishable character traits run through the members of the Hwesa clan. \n\nAs a Hwesa myself, I identify as a free-thinker, colour dreamer and lover of food, traits that I like to believe are a reflection of the Hwesa (wild mouse). As a jovial Hwesa, I firmly believe that no one can ruin my day without my consent and I approach life’s challenges with mental agility and optimism.",

bodyHello Everyone My name is Miraramitatu, which is drawn from my family totem, Hwesa Miraramitatu, a very common thing here in Zimbabwe, to associate ourselves with our totems. I am free-thinker, colour dreamer and lover of food. I like to comment on anything interesting giving a pedestrian perspective. I firmly believe that noone can ruin my day without my consent. My thoughts on other people's views are just that, nothing personal! :)
