Similar to renters’ insurance, this is a specific policy with a dollar amount attached to expensive pieces of [mining equipment](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/is-cryptocurrency-mining-still-proftiable-2025) in case of theft, loss, or damage.\n\n### Platform Failure/Digital Asset Protection\n\nPlatform failure and digital asset insurance is specifically designed for institutions and is intended to pay out if their platform is lost or damaged. We believe it includes coverage for damages [caused by hackers](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2kgndwwd7lo), but each policy we reviewed was a bit different.\n\n### Crime Theft/Loss\n\nFor the average cryptocurrency investor, there is crime [theft/loss insurance](https://cointelegraph.com/explained/what-is-cryptocurrency-insurance-and-how-does-it-work), which will pay out in the case that your [crypto is stolen or lost](https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-05-22/crypto-crime-is-the-future-bank-heists-are-history). To be clear, it will not protect you in the case that you lose part of your investment due to a token declining in value—this is only if you lose access to your cryptocurrency through a fault that is not your own.\n\nWe are not 100% certain of the ins and outs of these types of policies, but they may be a good idea if you have a large amount of assets and are worried about them being stolen.\n\n### Digital Property Protection\n\nSimilar to the type of insurance you would purchase for expensive jewelry, digital property insurance is taken out for a specific digital property, such as an [NFT](https://www.investopedia.com/non-fungible-tokens-nft-5115211), usually for a specific value. All vetting must be done on your own terms and, as always, be cautious of scams and read all the fine print before buying.\n\n## Can Anyone Buy Cryptocurrency Insurance\n\nThere are many different types of cryptocurrency insurance, but while some types are limited to institutions, theft/loss protection and digital property protection can generally be purchased by anyone. We don’t think that everyone needs to buy cryptocurrency insurance though—more on that below.\n\n## Should You Purchase Cryptocurrency Insurance?\n\nJust because something exists doesn’t mean you need to purchase it. Especially when it is something new to the industry, like cryptocurrency insurance. In our opinion, only those who own very expensive NFTs or work with cryptocurrency on an institutional level should consider cryptocurrency insurance.\n\nWhy? Well, like we said above, cryptocurrency insurance is [new to the industry](https://www.financemagnates.com/cryptocurrency/innovation/cryptocurrency-insurance-the-pros-and-cons-of-protecting-your-assets/), and we don’t exactly trust all the names of companies that offer it that we found during our research. At this point, we think acquiring [insurance for cryptocurrency](https://content.naic.org/insurance-topics/cryptocurrency) might be just as risky as holding cryptocurrency in the first place. This is especially true in countries without strict regulations governing insurance companies.\n\nAdditionally, the major risk of buying cryptocurrency isn’t theft or loss, but rather losing your investment due to [market fluctuations](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/what-is-permanent-loss-and-how-does-it-affect-crypto). Join the Community First\n\nBefore buying, establish yourself as a member of the community just to see what others are saying. For example, if there is a [Reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/1km0zex/security_101_how_to_safely_store_your_crypto_in/) for a blockchain project you are interested in, join it. Also, check for a Facebook group, [Telegram chat](https://telegram.org/), or whatever you can find.\n\nIf no community exists, this is your first red flag. If you are able to find a community, ensure you lurk around for several weeks before buying and take note of anyone complaining about the company/blockchain. Also ensure that the community is active. If you are one of these 69,000+ customers, you have already received an email from Coinbase alerting you to this fact.\n\nBut even if you are not part of the thousands of Coinbase platform users who are now susceptible to identity fraud, you may be wondering just what happened to cause the cryptocurrency market mogul to leak data. We’ve got everything you need to know here, so keep reading.\n\n\n![coinbasebreach2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmV8TQduwghGHNqC9hKXx8CHkjJgx8jAzQm1Ncp56tvURC/coinbasebreach2.jpg)\n\n\n## What Was the Coinbase Data Breach?\n\nOn [May 11th, 2025](https://www.coinbase.com/blog/protecting-our-customers-standing-up-to-extortionists), Coinbase received [a ransom note](https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/05/20/how-to-protect-yourself-coinbase-data-breach/83743823007/) from a malicious hacker who claimed he had the personal details of over [69,000 Coinbase users](https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/1ksqg0n/69461_people_impacted_by_coinbase_data_breach/). He or she then proceeded to demand [$20 million in the BTC equivalent](https://www.reuters.com/business/coinbase-says-cyber-criminals-stole-account-data-some-customers-2025-05-15/) to delete the data. Coinbase declined.\n\nCoinbase looked into the breach itself and discovered that the malicious hacker had indeed received information about its customers, and they were able to do so by bribing some [non-US Coinbase employees for their agent access](https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/15/coinbase-says-hackers-bribed-staff-to-steal-customer-data-and-are-demanding-20-million-ransom.html). Then this individual was able to download this information over the time period of [6 months](https://dailyhodl.com/2025/05/22/69461-people-impacted-by-massive-coinbase-data-breach-social-security-numbers-account-balances-adddresses-and-government-id-images-exposed/).\n\nThese employees have all since been found and fired, and Coinbase is offering a $20 million equivalent BTC reward to anyone who can give information leading to the arrest of the hacker.\n\n## What Information Was Stolen?\n\nBefore you panic, know that the hacker did not steal quite as much information as he thought he stole. Much of what he was given access to [was partially masked](https://techcrunch.com/2025/05/21/coinbase-says-its-data-breach-affects-at-least-69000-customers/)—meaning he isn’t able to completely take over your social security number and claim benefits in your name.\n\nThat being said, he did collect enough to give him leverage to carry out social engineering scams—meaning if someone contacts you claiming to have certain information about you as a [Coinbase agent](https://x.com/coinbase?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor), this could be him. Do not transfer any money at the direction of a Coinbase agent.\n\nThe [information stolen](https://www.businessinsider.com/coinbase-hack-crypto-scam-fraud-coin-sp500-listing-cryptocurrency-exchange-2025-5) was as follows:\n\n Client names\n\n Client addresses\n\n Client phone numbers\n\n Client emails\n\n Partially masked social security numbers (only the last 4 digits)\n\n Masked bank account numbers\n\n Government ID images (submitted to Coinbase for KYC)\n\n Account data (balances and transaction history)\n\n Information about Coinbase corporate\n\nWhile this may sound scary, know that they did not get login credentials, private keys, or the ability to access any accounts. This means your money is not currently in the danger of being stolen, but someone might have enough information about you to convince you to move your funds to their account. Stay vigilant, and do not believe any calls or emails you receive from anyone claiming to work for Coinbase.\n\n\n![coinbasebreach3.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbuUJTWiBvKbcQSaAujnECGhAoowrJp7NGdH1FVRrWXi9/coinbasebreach3.jpg)\n\n\n## What Should You Do?\n\nIf you are a current customer of Coinbase, ensure you check your email for notification that your account has been compromised. These emails went out on May 15th, 2025, to everyone affected. If you did not get an email, you were NOT affected.\n\nIf you were affected, Coinbase recommends taking the following steps:\n\n Turn on withdrawal allow listing (only allows withdrawals to trusted accounts)\n\n Enable 2FA if you haven’t already\n\n Don’t answer the phone from numbers you don’t recognize.\n\n If you receive a call from someone claiming to work at Coinbase, hang up.\n\n Lock your account if you feel threatened. Then contact [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])\n\n Do not click any links in any emails from Coinbase, even if they look legit. Instead, sign directly into your account via a web browser and make any changes there.\n\n Use a cold wallet to store cryptocurrency funds whenever possible.\n\nNote that Coinbase has already flagged your account, and you will be required to present extra identification the next time you log in.\n\n## What If You Have Already Been Scammed?\n\nUnfortunately, because this scheme has been carried out by the malicious actor since December 2024, some [individuals have already been scammed](https://cointelegraph.com/news/70k-impacted-coinbase-data-breach-maine-attorneys). If you or someone you know has already been convinced to move funds off the Coinbase platform maliciously, contact Coinbase customer support immediately.\n\nRemember, only those who received an email on May 15th, 2025, were affected by the breach. If that was you, and you sent money to someone who later turned out to be a scammer (between December 2024 and May 2025), email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) to start the investigation into the transfer. If it is found to be connected to the data breach, you will be reimbursed.\n\n## Why Didn’t Coinbase Pay the Ransom?\n\nMany online are asking why Coinbase didn’t pay the ransom, and honestly, we agree with their decision. This is because paying the [$20 million ransom](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1679788/000167978825000094/coin-20250514.htm) would not guarantee that the illegally farmed data would be deleted. Rather, the criminal would receive $20 million, and could continue to carry out social engineering scams.\n\nCoinbase made the right decision, instead placing the $20 million equivalent in [BTC](https://bitcoin.org/) as a reward that leads to the criminal’s capture. They are also putting funds into ensuring a breach like this doesn’t happen again.\n\n## Who is Behind the Coinbase Breach?\n\nCurrently, there is no conclusive information as to who is behind the Coinbase breach, though many cryptocurrency investigators are working to find out (also so they can receive the reward!)\n\nCoinbase is tracking the stolen funds wherever possible, and they do know that the hacker has already used [THORChain](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/altcoin-spotlight-thorchain) to launder the stolen money, switching stolen ETH for DAI, a US dollar pegged stablecoin. The hacker has also been mocking known cryptocurrency detectives.\n\nWe believe that eventually this thief will be caught, as [Coinbase](https://www.mintdice.com/blog/coinbase-review-2024) is a powerhouse in the cryptocurrency exchange world, and they have several employees who were part of the heist. But are these reversals good for the people, or just the banks?\n\nWhile we are always happy that cryptocurrency is becoming more mainstream, this latest policy reversal may not be the godsend everyone thinks it is. Keep reading to learn more.\n\n\n![fdicreversing2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmfVXX38u5pDUgA2LaDSGa6FEudnBMWf6u9Th5yNRRS3gJ/fdicreversing2.jpg)\n\n\n## What Did the FDIC Reverse?\n\nIn 2022, the FDIC issued a regulation that [required banks to get federal approval](https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2025/03/28/fdic-reverses-u-s-crypto-banking-policy-that-demanded-prior-approvals) prior to engaging in cryptocurrency activities. Approvals, which never seemed to arrive, as many blockchains fought for their rights in court.\n\nThis restriction was widespread, causing issues for specific platforms as well as the market behemoth [Coinbase](https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2025-47). Though many of these battles were resolved in the court room, banks around the United States were left holding an empty bag as they waited for the [promised approvals that never materialized](https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/fdic-says-banks-can-engage-crypto-activities-without-prior-approval-2025-03-28/).\n\nIf this weren’t exciting enough, the OCC also recently rescinded its 2022 issued guidance on cryptocurrency/blockchain adoption.\n\n## What Does This Reversal Mean for Banks?\n\nWell, in the notice of the reversal issued on Friday, it was stated that banks can begin researching and using cryptocurrency as long as the “[risks are considered](https://www.fdic.gov/news/financial-institution-letters/2025/fdic-clarifies-process-banks-engage-crypto-related).” However, the acting chairman of the FDIC, Travis Hill, did mention that further regulations may be coming down the road. But for right now, the policy that was holding banks back is gone.\n\nWhile we are happy about this, and we expect several banks to begin using blockchain technology and offering cryptocurrency options to customers, we have several concerns as well.\n\n## The Dangers of Federal Banks Using Cryptocurrency\n\nRemember, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin were invented for the people, by the people, and we always hesitate when we hear of the government getting involved. Although we truly believe that Bitcoin is the currency of the future, governments can’t control Bitcoin like they do inflation (the one good aspect, because look how bad the government is on controlling inflation) but they can track its use in a way that isn’t our favorite. So, keep that in mind, that whenever you spend Bitcoin, the government probably can find out.\n\nWhich brings our other concerns to the surface. If banks were just given the greenlight on Bitcoin, we wouldn’t be as worried. But they have been given the green light on all cryptocurrencies. This means that banks can possibly involve themselves in [scam cryptocurrency projects](https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/2025-crypto-crime-report-introduction/).\n\nEven though there are many honest and amazing projects in crypto (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, just to name a few), there are far more scams. There are also many tokens which aren’t scams, but are used by celebrities to rob the uneducated (Dogecoin and [Trump Token](https://theconversation.com/why-trumps-meme-coin-is-a-cash-grab-248215)). And we fear that banks will begin getting involved in these projects because they are cheaper—not realizing the risks associated with these types of blockchain projects.\n\nWe also worry that many individuals who don’t know much about crypto will be introduced to the industry by their banks—maybe even be pressured into something they know nothing about, which could be a disaster in the long run. After all, even [FTX](https://apnews.com/article/ftx-bankruptcy-binance-timeline-c519d50b9059aa8bff0ce8b6cd26c40e) looked like a good project on the surface when it was really a scam.\n\nThat brings us to our other concern. The fact that Travis Hill said that future regulation is pending. As individuals who have been involved in cryptocurrency for several years, we urge everyone to proceed with caution if your bank approaches you with new options.
