| body | From the moment I started college almost 9 years ago, my everyday life has been somewhat of a whirlwind. Some days I miss the simplicity of middle and high school life, although it didn't feel that way at the time. I began college, worked part time, and by the time I was a sophomore, I was married. Wade, my husband, worked full time at an entry level job while I went to school. We lived in a mother-in-law suite under his parent's house. It was awesome. We didn't have to pay rent. Praise the Lord! We were what you'd consider poor, but we were and are so immensely blessed by both sides of our families. The suite we lived in was perfect for a young married couple. It was a small one bedroom, one bathroom living space. It was definitely big enough for two people, yet we were busting at the seams. Our hobby/what we would do together for fun att he time was to shop (Yes, Wade likes to shop!). The money we didn't spend on rent was used to fuel this hobby. We would go to stores like Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and even thrift stores to look for great deals on clothing we seemingly liked even though at home, we were out of hangers, and the (pretty large) closet we had was becoming too small. We decided to buy an extra wardrobe to put in the bedroom for more room to hang stuff up! Also, we never saved any money. Fast forward a few years. I graduated college, and we bought a little house on Signal Mountain. It was close to where I worked at the time. The house was built in 1958 and the closets were TINY. We did have to downsize a little, but somehow we stuffed all of our clothes in. Fast forward a few more years. We have our first child. We sell our house to start building a house, and we move in with my parents (This is our current situation. Again, immensely blessed!). We get pregnant. As I began going through baby stuff, I also began to reflect on our journey to where we currently are and why I'm always so stressed out. For years while I was in school and working, I would stand in front of my closet, sometimes for 20 minutes, trying to pick out my clothes to wear the next day. Why was this so hard?! I had a bajillion items of clothing, yet nothing to wear?! Maybe with access to too many choices, I would just freeze up. I couldn't make a decision. I think to myself, "Something has got to give". We have less space than we have ever had, and honestly, I don't even wear or use most of the stuff in the closet. I have always dealt with anxiety. I wouldn't say it was severe, but it was always there nagging, affecting my mood and quality of life, and keeping me from doing things out of my comfort zone. What started in my closet building a capsule wardrobe snowballed in to the decluttering and organization of child's clothes, toys, bathroom drawers, etc. It even affected what I carry in my diaper bag and what I keep in my car. I began to adopt a minimalistic lifestyle, and since then, I haven't had that anxiety in the back of my mind. I have been able to enjoy my children, my husband, and life without that nagging feeling. I'm little OCD, especially when it comes to my house. I feel better with my bed made, the dishes out of the sink, and everything picked up and orderly. When things are misplaced or if I don't remember where I put something, I stress out big time. These things are hard to do when I have so much stuff. I used to live in a way where I would clean the whole house at once, then it would slowly turn in to a huge mess. When I just couldn't take it anymore, I would clean the whole house at once again, and this became a cycle. I couldn't MAINTAIN my home. Over time, as I have adopted this minimal mindset, I have learned to maintain my home. Now, it is so important to me to have a place that is our haven. Somewhere clean, organized, and nurturing for my children. I want it to be a place where no matter when someone comes over, I'm not stressed out about the way it looks. I'm not talking about some toys on the floor or a house that looks like no one lives there, but a place where we have only things that are practical, used, and that bring us joy. Nothing extra. You have to give yourself some grace. Now, keeping my home is a whole topic in itself, so I will save the rest of what I have to say about it for another time. Maybe when our house is complete, I can write more on this philosophy and include pictures of our new space! So all of this started with my wardrobe. My capsule wardrobe took a few attempts. I'd start, get overwhelmed, and I'd quit. I did that probably three times before I figured out how to best go about it. Below, I'm going to define a capsule wardrobe, tell you what my goals were when putting my capsules together, and a few tips to help you get started. A capsule wardrobe is a specified number of clothing that creates a collection of versatile pieces that you absolutely love. It should contain no "meh" pieces or pieces you "might wear sometime in the future... I better keep it because I might need it later on." (Raise your hand if you are guilty!!) Each capsule contains 33 items. You can choose a different number. 33 is a common number to use, but remember your goal is to simplify, so I wouldn't recommend going much higher. This number includes shoes, tops, sweaters, pants, skirts, and dresses. Things that I do not count as part of my 33 items are bras, panties, socks, pajamas, and workout clothes (Now, these areas will also need attention... How many t-shirts and black leggings do you really need??) The goals of a capsule wardrobe include simplifying your wardrobe, removing a stressor from your life, and saving money by not spending it unnecessarily on clothes you will never wear but you bought because it was such a deal. When you buy clothing, choose fewer high quality pieces that you LOVE over a large quantity of clothes you didn't pay much for (but it does add up!) and will not wear. I have three capsule wardrobes. Tennessee weather has a very wide range of temperatures. We experience every season. If you live somewhere like Southern California, you could get away with one or two capsule wardrobes. I have a capsule for Winter, Summer, and Fall/Spring (similar weather). Each contains 33 pieces, and some pieces travel through every wardrobe! To begin my wardrobe, I remove EVERY piece of clothing from my closet including my shoes. I organize my clothing based on seasons. I make 3 different piles-- one for winter, one for summer, and one for fall/spring. At this point, I have not gotten rid of anything. I begin going through one pile at a time, and I make "subpiles" within each season's wardrobe. These "subpiles" are what helped me create my capsules without getting frustrated and giving up. For each season capsule: Subpile 1: Items I wear all the time and absolutely love with no doubt in my mind. Subpile 2: This is the most important to help you overcome! This pile contains those items that you are unsure if you want to get rid of. You like it, but haven't worn it in a long time. You might wear it in the future. Subpile 3: Items you can put in a bag and drop off at the thrift store! Take all of the clothes from subpile 3, put in a trash bag, and go drop it off. Take all the clothes from subpile 2, put it in a trash bag, and put in your attic/garage where you have some storage place. Keep it out of sight. Take subpile 1 and begin organizing by types of pieces. Fold your pants/shorts and put into a pile. Do the same for your tops, dresses, shoes, etc. Now begin looking over all the pieces you absolutely love, and test their versatility. Think about how they can be matched with various other pieces. If an item of clothing isn't sitting well with your capsule, set it to the side. Maybe you could get rid of it... Maybe not. Reflect until you reach your limit of 33 pieces and are happy with the variety you have within that capsule. In some cases, you might realize you are missing a key piece. For example, I purchased a jean jacket to add to my wardrobe, and it has brought a lot of versatility! If you go over this number because you absolutely love those extra pieces and really will wear it all, don't fret. Just put it in your capsule. Out goal is not to be unhappy because you have to get rid of everything you love. The goal is that no matter when you have to dress yourself to go out, it' a pleasure. No matter what you pull out of your wardrobe to wear, you know it fits great, you look great, and you will be confident wearing it. Remember subpile 2? Keep it in your attic/garage. If time goes by, and you find yourself really missing a piece of clothing that's in there, pull it out, and add it to your capsule! If a couple months go by, and you haven't given it a thought, go grab those trash bags, keep them closed, drive to the thrift store, and get rid of them! It's a great way to commit to a capsule wardrobe, without the fear of regret. It is so freeing! On paper, this seems like such a small change, but creating these capsule wardrobes has made a huge impact on my life. I don't worry about what I'm going to wear. My morning routine to get ready is much quicker, which is a must with one or more children! I don't really have to give it much thought. I just open my capsule, grab something, and go! One thing I want to add... My husband's job requires him to get dirty. His work clothes are not part of his capsule wardrobes, and each of his capsules are much smaller than mine because he doesn't wear "normal clothes" as often. Capsule wardrobes should be there to help you, not create something you won't be happy with, and this can look different for each person. Below, I have a picture of each capsule. I keep them all in the same closet, and each capsule that is out of season, I just push to the side. When a new season begins, I move that capsule to the front and push the other one to the side. Plus, when a new season starts, it's like I having a brand new set of clothes because I haven't worn them in so long! The number in each capsule are different. They range from 32-38 pieces in each I think. Also to note: I have a pair of heels and a couple dressy dresses for special occasions like a wedding. I do not include those in my capsule. Winter: Summer: *Shorts not pictured. Add 4 pieces to what's in pic. Fall/Spring: *Note: I forgot to put my jeans and pants on rack! Sorry... Add 4 pieces to what's in pic. As each season passes, I reflect on each wardrobe. Did I receive new clothes that I love for Christmas? Birthday? What didn't I wear this season? Am I okay with getting rid of it as I cycle in a couple new pieces? My mantra when I think about buying clothes: Do I love it enough that I am willing to get rid of something for it to replace? My next goal is to pare down my workout/lounge clothes. Because I'm home with my children, I like to be comfy... And I've collected more than I need. Join me on my journey and start your own capsule wardrobes! Message me with any questions or concerns. Soon, I will be documenting a friend as she creates her capsule wardrobes and posting it on the blog! |

"body": "\n\nFrom the moment I started college almost 9 years ago, my everyday life has been somewhat of a whirlwind. We were what you'd consider poor, but we were and are so immensely blessed by both sides of our families.\n\nThe suite we lived in was perfect for a young married couple. \n\n\nFast forward a few years. I graduated college, and we bought a little house on Signal Mountain. It was close to where I worked at the time. The house was built in 1958 and the closets were TINY. We did have to downsize a little, but somehow we stuffed all of our clothes in. \n\n\nFast forward a few more years. I think to myself, \"Something has got to give\". We have less space than we have ever had, and honestly, I don't even wear or use most of the stuff in the closet.\n\n\nI have always dealt with anxiety. \n\n\nOver time, as I have adopted this minimal mindset, I have learned to maintain my home. Maybe when our house is complete, I can write more on this philosophy and include pictures of our new space!\n\n\nSo all of this started with my wardrobe. My capsule wardrobe took a few attempts. I'd start, get overwhelmed, and I'd quit. I did that probably three times before I figured out how to best go about it. Below, I'm going to define a capsule wardrobe, tell you what my goals were when putting my capsules together, and a few tips to help you get started.\n\n\nA capsule wardrobe is a specified number of clothing that creates a collection of versatile pieces that you absolutely love. It should contain no \"meh\" pieces or pieces you \"might wear sometime in the future... I better keep it because I might need it later on.\" (Raise your hand if you are guilty!!) Each capsule contains 33 items. How many t-shirts and black leggings do you really need??)\n\n\nThe goals of a capsule wardrobe include simplifying your wardrobe, removing a stressor from your life, and saving money by not spending it unnecessarily on clothes you will never wear but you bought because it was such a deal. When you buy clothing, choose fewer high quality pieces that you LOVE over a large quantity of clothes you didn't pay much for (but it does add up!) and will not wear.\n\n\nI have three capsule wardrobes. \n\n\nTo begin my wardrobe, I remove EVERY piece of clothing from my closet including my shoes. I organize my clothing based on seasons. I make 3 different piles-- one for winter, one for summer, and one for fall/spring. At this point, I have not gotten rid of anything. I begin going through one pile at a time, and I make \"subpiles\" within each season's wardrobe. These \"subpiles\" are what helped me create my capsules without getting frustrated and giving up. \n\n\nFor each season capsule:\n\n\nSubpile 1: Items I wear all the time and absolutely love with no doubt in my mind. \n\nSubpile 2: This is the most important to help you overcome! This pile contains those items that you are unsure if you want to get rid of. You like it, but haven't worn it in a long time. You might wear it in the future. \n\nSubpile 3: Items you can put in a bag and drop off at the thrift store! \n\n\n\nTake all of the clothes from subpile 3, put in a trash bag, and go drop it off.\n\n\n\nTake all the clothes from subpile 2, put it in a trash bag, and put in your attic/garage where you have some storage place. Keep it out of sight. \n\n\n\nTake subpile 1 and begin organizing by types of pieces. Fold your pants/shorts and put into a pile. Do the same for your tops, dresses, shoes, etc. Now begin looking over all the pieces you absolutely love, and test their versatility. Think about how they can be matched with various other pieces. | body | Raise your hand if you are guilty of hoarding beauty products. You open up your bathroom drawer and cabinet, and it is full of years old products you didn't quite run out of, products you bought thinking this is IT, I'll LOVE this, only to find out it is no better than the rest. And here you are still with dry or oily, blemished skin, bad hair days, makeup that just doesn't work well with your skin, and you've spent too much money... I've cleaned my bathroom drawers out before. I do get rid of stuff, but in a few months, I'm back to where I started. I wasted money trying new products from the store. Shampoo/Conditioner and makeup were my ultimate weaknesses. Two weeks ago, I downloaded the Think Dirty app on my phone. I did some reading on their website (Click here)and started searching the products I'm currently using. I was appalled! They have a list called the "Dirty Dozen" that they use to rate beauty products from 1-10 (Click here). These ingredients made the list based on actual research. Plus, all of these ingredients are banned outside of the US. WHAT?! Like... These ingredients are linked to cancer and are known neurotoxins and hormone inhibitors! And I'm here wiping my kids' butts and slathering their bodies with it. Obviously, one of the benefits of changing your beauty routine to a clean one, is you know you are taking care of yourself and your family. Another benefit? A mass exodus of probably your entire hoard of beauty products. Talk about being minimal and organized! This app makes it easy to do. It forces you to make more conscious decisions, and although I might pay a little more money for a clean product, I have found that the products I have bought to replace my dirty products have worked better for me. My skin is glowing, and it isn't dry or oily. My hair is silky and doesn't frizz up as much on rainy days. I don't need to cover my whole body in lotion after every shower. This photo is all the products I got rid of after downloading the app. Just a week prior I went through my bathroom and threw away a whole trashbag. THIS is what was still leftover! This app has changed my life! One thing I want to point out is the term "clean". Clean doesn't necessarily mean natural, and natural doesn't necessarily mean clean. Many man-made synthetic ingredients are perfectly safe to use, and many naturally occurring ingredients are not. Trust me, I'm a chemist ;) Poison Ivy is completely natural, but it definitely isn't safe to rub all over my skin. Furthermore, companies tend to use buzzwords on their packaging that can mislead you about the cleanliness of their product. This is why it is so important to acquaint yourself with the dirty dozen ingredients and to always use the Think Dirty app before making a purchase. Read this article and watch the video from the Today Show for more information (Click here). Although I have switched to some products that cost a little more than drug store beauty products, they last a long time, and they work. I am not wasting my money buying other things. Some items in my routine though, are a bargain! Below, I have listed all the clean products I use daily on myself and on my children. Night Routine: In the shower: Whole Foods 365 Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash ($7.99 each for 32oz) Face wash/Scrub: My sister's recipe "Face Fudge" All natural, clean, and homemade. It has worked wonders. I no longer have oily skin or breakouts. I've used it for a few years now. I'll do a post about it next week when she comes over to make more. If you are interested in buying some, let me know! Face Moisturizer: Walmart Great Value Unrefined Organic Coconut Oil ($10-- lasts FOREVER) mixed with Grapefruit and Frankincense Essential Oils (Youngliving-- also lasts a very long time). Homemade. Eye Makeup Remover: The coconut oil above without the essential oils. Deodorant: Homemade using baking soda, cornstarch, coconut oil, and essential oils. Kids Wash: Every Coconut Shampoo and Body. Found at Whole Foods. ($8.99 for 16oz) Kids Moisturizer: The coconut oil above mixed with lavender essential oils. Homemade. Toothpaste: Jason toothpaste (Found at Marshall's for $2.99. Also sold at Whole Foods) It is fluoride free, so use the app if you want to find a clean toothpaste with fluoride. Lotion: Aveeno Skin Relief 24 hr Moisturizing Lotion. ($6.99) *Be careful! Not all Aveeno products are clean!!* Day Routine: Refresh: T.N. Dickinson's Witch Hazel on cotton ball used as a toner. Found at Target or Walmart ($2-$3-- lasts a few months for me). I only use the witch hazel in the morning. I don't need to wash or moisturize in the morning anymore because of the products I use during my nighttime routine. Hair Product: Alba Botanical hawaiian anti-frizz serum. Makeup Routine: Foundation: BareMinerals Original Foundation ($28) Lasts a few months for me. Blush: BareMinerals Loose Blush ($20) Lasts over a year for me. Eyeshadow: BareMinerals Loose Eyeshadows ($15 each) Lasts over a year for me. Highlighter: It Cosmetics Radiance Creme Luminizer ($22) Lipstick: BarsMinerals Gen Nude Radiant Lipstick ($20) ** I haven't switched my eyeliner (Sephora liquid eyeliner), mascara (Urban Decay Perversion), or eyebrow gel (GimmeBrow) products yet. I really love these products, so I need recommendations on these three things that are clean AND work great. Baby Products: Diapers: Honest Company. Order monthly bundles online. ($79.95 for one month supply of diapers and wipes.) They often run deals for first timers like BOGO bundles for the first order. Wipes: Honest Company (see bundles above) Rash Cream: Angel Baby Bottom Balm ($8) Antibacterial Wipes: Paper towels, water, thieves essential oil. (Homemade) Hand Sanitizer: Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, thieves and tea tree essential oils (Homemade) There it is! These are the ONLY products I have in my bathroom and in my diaper bag. I'm not tempted to buy other things, because I know what I use works. There are many options and brands that are clean and have great reviews. I know many people who you all Honest Company Products and Beauty Counter products. My next phase, when we move into the house we are currently building (hopefully moved in by June!), is to start researching and switching to clean brands for laundry detergent, hand and dish soap, sunscreen, and household cleaning products! If you want a the recipe for any of the homemade products I use, just send me a message! Or I can make it for a small cost (ingredients and time). I'd love to hear from you! Send me recommendations for clean products you use and love in all aspects of your life. |

| body | What would be more appropriate than to talk about my romance with espresso? I need to coin a term for this relationship... You know, like bromance. Espresso + romance = you know what, I'm not going to even try to make myself look stupid. All I can say is, espresso is one of the loves of my life. If you want to start a friendship, convince me to do something, or just try to impress me, all you need to do is take me to a lovely local coffee shop and buy me a 12 oz whole milk latte with an extra shot half caff. (My favorite places are Mayfly, Mean Mug, and Plus Coffee) (https://img.esteem.ws/nn6h2al2a2.jpg) ![image] ![image] (https://img.esteem.ws/34uababjib.jpg) ![image] (https://img.esteem.ws/qtd1zinl31.jpg) The title of this blog entry is taken from some meme I saw floating around on Facebook. While depression is a real issue, this meme accurately describes how I feel about it. I couldn't help but laugh (at myself) at how much I rely on my espresso, I look forward to it every day. It makes my day a little brighter. Pair with a little devotion in the morning, and I'm invincible! And no, I don't have my quiet time EVERY morning. Not with a 2 yr old poking my face to wake me up at 7 am and a 7 week old crying to be fed as soon as he wakes up about 15 minutes later. Then comes the morning diaper changes, breakfast, and "play Legos mommyyyyyy". I do my best to make my latte, say a prayer, and power through the day. Before Fitz was born, I created one devotion "lesson plan" (sorry, I'm a teacher) a week that I would do with Silas where he would memorize a verse and learn a new worship song. It actually worked amazingly well! I haven't done it in a while because of the new baby... But hopefully start again soon once we get a better routine going. I'll write a post about it sometime and include the plans. Maybe I could publish it :O Anyway, if you love espresso like me, but can only enjoy it when you can make it to a coffee shop, I have a recommendation. You don't even need electricity. It's called an Aeropress, and it is a manual, easy way to make espresso shots!! I use it EVERY DAY and it saves me so much money. ($4 lattes add up...) You can buy one on Amazon for $30. It looks like this: Find yourself some locally roasted coffee beans and have them grind the beans using an espresso grind. This just means it is ground finely. I pay $10-$12 for my favorite coffee and it lasts me 2-4 weeks. My favorites to use are Sumatra Human Tiger from Mean Mug or Honduras from Mayfly. Both are roasted in-house! Here is the Mean Mug blend I'm currently using: I open the Aeropress at about where the number 2 is (see pic) and I measure one heaping scoop (scooper comes with Aeropress) of the espresso grounds (about 18g) and place it in the Aeropress. Fill with hot water (not quite boiling) and stir. Attach filter, let sit for 1.5 minutes, and press in to your coffee mug. Voila! You have your espresso. My favorite to make at home is an iced latte. I just add milk, ice, and a little simple syrup (sugar water... Just Google it!). If you want it hot, warm up some milk, add to your espresso, and mix in simple syrup or honey. You could even substitute milk with almond milk or another milk of your choice. I wish I had a fancy espresso machine on a custom coffee cart, but I don't have that much money. This is just as good when you make it right (yes, you can mess it up.) But with a little practice, you can have that amazing latte every day from home that is also super easy to clean up. If you don't believe me, come on over. I'll make you one as long as you hold Fitz for a while... And play Legos with Silas. Side note: I had a great date idea for coffee loving couples. Wade and I are planning a "coffee tour" where we take a day and tour all of the local coffee shops around Chattanooga, learn about where or how they roast their coffee, and sample it. Also, it would be such a great setting for conversation with your man or a friend. We are going to go to places we haven't been before, but also the ones we love. We can compare how each tastes all in the same day. I'm thinking we would buy one drink at each to split so we wouldn't consume too much caffeine. Would anyone else be interested in doing that?! |

| body | What is my purpose? What is my calling? What is my ministry? These questions have dominated my quality of life from the day I began applying to colleges my senior year of high school. Yet, even through my doubts, my frustrations, and those dreaded "closed doors", the Lord has had his hand through it all. I did complete my college degree-- Chemistry and Secondary Education. I did get a full time job as a teacher, and I honestly loved it. I was married at 18, and we owned a home when I was 21. Things were good... From the outside. Our "American dream" was being fulfilled. I worked so hard to get to this point, yet I still felt empty. I still felt like I hadn't found my true purpose. There had to be something more. September of 2014 we found out we were pregnant with our first. We were so excited (and clueless). Silas Nolan Branum was born June 7, 2015. This was the day my life truly changed forever. The purpose of my blog is first, to be a form of therapy for me so I don't go crazy. :) Second, to hold me accountable as I transition to a more simple, purposeful, and nurturing way of life for my family. Never have these things been so important to me as when I became a mother. Third, I want to try new things! I want to find new activities, recipes, and to be more adventurous (even when I'm sitting at home with them!) with my family... Always teaching and finding ways to show them the true meaning of the gospel. I want to live a life that is not stressful because of all the "stuff" that can get in the way of our joy. I want to declutter my house AND my mind so I can focus on what's truly important-- being the mother and wife the Lord has called me to be. |

| body | Hi! My name Shelby, and I am a stay at home mom who is passionate about minimalistic living, clean eating, and clean beauty. My blog will be focusing on how to be a mom in a materialistic world that attempts steal my joy and focus away from my family. Join me on my journey of fulfilling my purpose as a mother by decluttering my house and decluttering my mind so I can focus on what's truly important-- my family. Follow me on Instagram @shelbybranum and @minimalmotherhood for blog updates! |
