Due to its new Proof of Work algorithm any person with a CPU or GPU can start mining it. This bitcoin fork was created to “make bitcoin decentralized again”.</a></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><strong>What is Bitcoin Gold?</strong></p>\n<p>Bitcoin mining these days is almost completely controlled by industrialized miners and by manufacturers who sell products to them. Solo miners just can’t compete with large companies, and their specialized computers – with application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), built specifically for mining.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The new hard fork of Bitcoin, named Bitcoin Gold, was created to change this situation. BTG`s main purpose is not to compete with Bitcoin, but to help the crypto space avoid the monopolizing tendencies of ASIC mining, to return mining power to ordinary hardware and finally “make bitcoin decentralized again”. The founder, Jack Liao, also owns Lightning ASIC – a company selling GPU miners and ASIC miners. There are five other co-founders, including an anonymous lead developer.Bitcoin Gold resembles BTC in many aspects, but its mining algorithm is completely different: it can`t be run faster on the specialty mining equipment. It allows to spread mining of Bitcoin Gold among many individuals. In April 2018 BTG already had 246 reachable nodes with the highest concentration in Germany and the USA.</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>According to the official website, the cryptocurrency is trading live on almost 40 exchanges and available through the following wallet services: Trezor Wallet, Ledger Wallet, Coldlar, Exodus, Coinomi, Bitpie, Guarda, Freewallet, Kasse, Cobo.</li>\n  <li>According to Coinbase, the platform is finally going to allow users to withdraw forks of the Bitcoin protocol; and Bitcoin Gold for Coinbase is the first candidate for this.</li>\n  <li>n Q2 2018 BTG going to develop Payment systems integrations with a debit card program.</li>\n  <li>Bitcoin Gold market capitalization is obviously on the rise. Right now it ranked the 23rd cryptocurrency by market capitalization.</li>\n  <li>To start mining BTG is pretty easy as it’s one of the <a href=\"https://minergate.com/a/e95bcb0cb14854e2022ca5fa\">MinerGate-supported coins.</a></li>\n</ul>\n<h2><strong>Features and important issues</strong>&nbsp;</h2>\n<h3><strong>The Proof of Work algorithm</strong></h3>\n<p>The main change in BTG is a new hashing algorithm. With the standard Bitcoin algorithm, the usage of complex hardware (CPU, GPU) was a waste of resources; it was much more effective to create specific hardware for mining (ASIC). But Bitcoin Gold uses a Proof of Work algorithm called Equihash. It’s memory-oriented i.e. Bitcoin Gold mining depends on how much RAM a computer has and how many things it can do to complete a task. ASICs with their pure processing power are ineffective here, but desktop computers with multiple processing cores solve the tasks easily. Equihash supports fair mining infrastructure and gives individual miners an opportunity to compete.</p>\n<h3><strong>New difficulty adjustment algorithm</strong></h3>\n<p>The new mining difficulty adjustment algorithm was implemented: without it, larger miners would be able to influence the mining difficulty to get greater gains.</p>\n<h3><strong>Replay protection</strong></h3>\n<p>Until the fork occurs, Bitcoin Gold is a copy of the Bitcoin blockchain: it uses almost identical address formats and network protocols. To prevent loss of funds when the same transaction is broadcast to two different networks, BTG developers have added 2-way “replay protection”. An algorithm calculates the hash of a transaction to identify it, and that is why transactions on one chain are invalid on the other chain.</p>\n<h2><strong>Recent “51% attack”</strong></h2>\n<p>A few days ago Bitcoin Gold was hit with a 51% attack. The hackers controlled more than half of the network’s hashing power, which allowed them to steal up to $18 million from online exchanges. With 51% of power, attackers could make reversing transactions, spending the same coins more than once: they made deposits, traded the coins for BTC or another coin, withdrew the funds and then returned those coins back in their wallet. In a normal situation the blockchain would include only the first transaction in the block, but now, with the attackers’ majority control, double-spending became possible.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://blog.minergate.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/bitcoingold-1200x580.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"342\"/></p>\n<h2><strong>Details of the upcoming network update</strong></h2>\n<p>In response to the attack, developers are going to change their Proof of Work algorithm again. If more individual miners join the network instead of massive mining conglomerates, it will be much harder for attackers to obtain such control again. And if now BTG shares Equihash with other coins (so that the pool of its power is much bigger than BTG network hashpower), after an upgrade there will be a different algorithm without such a large amount of power. It will make BTG much more protected from 51% attacks.One of the main purposes of the upcoming upgrade is to make Equihash even more ASIC-resistant so that BTG could not be mined on new ASIC hardware. According to BTG blog, “Our upgrade may make the current crop of miners useless for mining BTG, but this does not prevent them (or others) from trying again. The Bitcoin Gold Organization is committed to repeating this process as necessary. In time, anyone buying BTG-specific miners will learn that their investment is always lost, and the producers of this hardware will see that huge spending to develop custom hardware doesn’t lead to the profits they’re hoping to grab”.The BTG 2018 Roadmap announced that later this year they are going to finalize integrations to fully implement Lightning Network (this will enable almost instant payments with lower fees). They will also bring support for P2Pool, a decentralized approach to mining pools, that works by creating a peer-to-peer network of miner nodes.</p>\n<h2><strong>Network Specs</strong></h2>\n<p>Now the total Bitcoin Gold in existence is more than 17 million, with a market capitalization of nearly $736 million, trading at a price of $43.17 USD. Its average transaction value is 55.40 BTG ($2,310 USD). The current block time (average time between blocks) is 9 minutes 17 seconds via block size of 5.417 Kbytes. Remember that the result can be put on blockchain by anyone of the parties in the future if they decide to do so.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<h1>&nbsp;<strong>Sidechains sound confusing, don’t they?</strong></h1>\n<p>&nbsp;Well yes, it can seem a bit complicated. &nbsp;So, let’s think of this who process like getting a loan from the bank in order to create value. For example, I have agreed with the bank to commit to some value between us (this is called pegging in blockchain jargon). &nbsp;&nbsp;I then do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to create value for me, independent of the bank – as long as the account is settled in full, the main blockchain doesn’t need to verify everything in real time. In crypto-speak, the bank represents the players providing the blockchain assets (e.g. a number of coins at an agreed price), I then do what I need to, without waiting for transaction settlements or worry about price volatility, and possibly most importantly, without the need for anyone really knowing who else is involved (at this point). &nbsp;Then, should I decide to do so, I can the details public.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://blog.minergate.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Understand-Blockchain-854x427.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\"/></p>\n<h1><strong>Why would you need a sidechain?</strong></h1>\n<p>Until recently, sidechains were used primarily to test Beta releases of altcoins or software updates, and as you can imagine, this is quite useful to prevent inadvertent downtime. &nbsp;(If you are aware of the lag when coins introduce new algorithms or new functionality, you will understand how this could create undue negative publicity which in turn might be detrimental to the coin’s reputation.)</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>You may also have read from time to time that transaction settlement times have lagged, or perhaps noticed a purchase or sale of coins was delayed. &nbsp;The use of sidechains through the use of parallel computing could reduce this by taking authority/responsibility for a subset of transactions – much like going to a different branch of the bank because the queues are quicker.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>So in short, the theory is that either that they will hit the ledger eventually, or that it doesn’t matter if they hit the ledger, as long as both parties can get on with what they need to do.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><a href=\"https://minergate.com/a/e95bcb0cb14854e2022ca5fa\">Let’s take another example to explain this. &nbsp;Say I’m a retailer selling clothing in a traditional fashion, I have a lot of upfront costs, overheads and ancillary costs associated with each sale. &nbsp;If I were to take payment via cryptocurrency rather than fiat, the buyer’s perception of the product’s cost would change on a minute by minute basis. By pegging the value of my outlays ahead of sales, I can offset some of the risks of price changes on costs. &nbsp;Bitmain, an ASIC miner supplier, do limited variations of this with some of their products – so you will find that the fiat amount to purchase an item will vary. However, they also revalue their products frequently, so when you spot that deal, you need to make that transaction quickly.</a></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>By allowing payment by crypto, I can broaden the appeal. &nbsp;If we take a look at Bitcoin prices, the highest price was over the US $19k in December 2017; in May 2018, the price was not above the US $10k. A sidechain won’t stop the value of Bitcoin waxing and waning, but it will allow me to not worry about the settlement times to the main blockchain so that I can smooth my business. &nbsp;I might then decide to fluctuate the amount of coin needed, rather than the amount of fiat needed to purchase items. At that point, I can decide whether to sell off the coin or retain for future gains in value.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>As you might expect, massive growth is expected for sidechains to prove the foundation for massive blockchain scalability, to allow these types of “smart contracts” and the settling of transactions more quickly and at reduced rates etc.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Security and hedging of risk are other important being sought – with scams becoming ever more supplicated, these important features will help allay the fears for those who have not investigated the strategic value of cryptocurrencies to. &nbsp;Already, some countries are introducing regulatory control for crypto businesses and trading.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://blog.minergate.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/hexagon-3420935_1920.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\"/></p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<h2><strong>How do sidechains really work?</strong></h2>\n<p>With so many possibilities and so many possible ways to implement a sidechain, there are only a few key players involved. &nbsp;Let’s call them the “user” (e.g. the customer), the “gatekeeper” (e.g. all the bits in the middle), and the “supplier” (e.g. like the bank). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;First the user triggers a function to lock a value (deposit) coins from the main blockchain (e.g. BTC, ETH, etc) into the sidechain to buy local units of whatever cryptocurrency takes their fancy – usually called the “altcoin” (for alternative coin whose features could include lower fees, faster settlement, anonymous transaction, more robust security, etc). &nbsp;Next, these units are transferred from the user to a “gate” contract with the main coin network.Simply put the transactions agreed between the user and the supplier are monitored by the gatekeeper to ensure that the gate contract is fulfilled on both sides by the authorized parties.Potential applications for sidechains are evolving almost faster than the technology allows, extending blockchain technology far beyond the vision of the founders. &nbsp;From financial services to secure storage of personal information, new worlds of possibilities are being developed on a daily basis. Users that incorrectly entered the Twitter.com domain name would be unsuspecting miners of Monero, with all of the mining proceeds going to the hacker. Although the user would quickly realize that they were on the wrong site, with hundreds or thousands of these domain names registered, you can see how the mining revenue could add up pretty quickly.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<h1><strong>Why Monero?</strong></h1>\n<p>Many security experts believe that there are two main reasons that malware developers are utilizing the <a href=\"https://minergate.com/a/e95bcb0cb14854e2022ca5fa\">Monero XMR</a> coin for covert mining. There is no question that this tech, which was born as the driving force of cryptocurrency, is fundamentally changing the world. However, with the inherent need for transparency that blockchain can provide, the question remains: Exactly how public are some of our transactions? Do we want that? When it comes to currency there are two forms we are all fairly familiar with, regardless of where you are from: <a href=\"https://minergate.com/a/abeae796a030205693d286a9\">Cash and Card</a>.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Transactions made with a credit or debit card carry several guaranteed “<a href=\"https://minergate.com/a/e95bcb0cb14854e2022ca5fa\">protection</a>s” while remaining transparent with details on every transaction made. On the other hand, transactions made in cash are practically untraceable. Bitcoin BTC and its blockchain protocols are like a decentralized version of the debit card system. While you are guaranteed certain levels of security, your transactions are far less anonymous than many have been led to believe. So what becomes the replacement for cash when fiat currencies are no more? Enter CryptoNote.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>CryptoNote is not a new cryptocurrency. It is a new protocol; a blockchain with a difference! Coins created on the CryptoNote platform perform much like cash, allowing for total anonymous transactions. This is achieved by the implementation of “ring signatures”. Unlike traditional blockchain where transactions are created by a single private and public key, ring signatures use a group of cryptographic keys for each transaction. This means that any one of the keys in the group sent or received funds; however there is no way of knowing which one it was. While it is easy to link anonymity with unsavory or illicit activity, there are in fact many legitimate reasons for making anonymous purchases from time to time. Gifts or charitable donations are one example. A pregnancy test (or similar item) you don’t want family members to know about is another. The most obvious, especially for anyone making regular larger transaction, is just privacy. Having control of your own privacy is priceless! Monero XMR is the most widely known fork of Bytecoin, and has been gaining a lot of attention recently. Monero has similar emphasis on privacy, hiding even the amounts of transactions made, as well as mining that is more open to anyone. With Monero XMR came the implementation of “browser mining”. Through this process you can run the CryptoNight algorithm through your browser, which uses your CPU power to mine Monero XMR. However, many hackers use this code maliciously to use your CPU power without your permission. &nbsp;Today, banks own professional sports arenas all over the world and control huge sectors of global finance from construction to the arts. &nbsp;There is a lot of profit in banking, and very little of that goes to you and me, the little guys. &nbsp;But imagine if we no longer needed banks. &nbsp;Imagine if all those grand profits no longer went to the 1% of top earners in the world, but instead was shared more evenly across the 99%. &nbsp;That’s the idea behind cryptocurrency: basically, we don’t need powerful banks holding all the money anymore now that blockchain technology is here.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>&nbsp;Let us next work with some foreign sounding terms. &nbsp;Imagine that the “Blockchain” is basically an excel spreadsheet file on your computer with some data in it. &nbsp;Except that it isn’t just on your computer, it is on a million computers across the globe, and it isn’t just “some” data, it’s all the financial transactions on record for that particular currency—and encrypted so no trusted 3rd party is needed. &nbsp;If a hacker wanted to hack your computer and change the data in your file to reflect all of the money in your checking account going into their account, that would be pretty easy. &nbsp;But when that file is on a million computers, the hacker would have to hack a million computers all at once to do the same thing—and that it nearly impossible. &nbsp;It is certainly more impossible that it would be to hack a bank’s computer system!</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;So you have this account data that is shared across all these computers, but so what? Mining is the process of using GPUs (graphics cards) to essentially “mint” new coins through a process called PoW (proof of work).</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>One of the most profitable coins to mine is Ethereum (ETH). Ethereum is a cryptocurrency platform that allows users to create “smart contracts” that replace traditional business logic and rules on the blockchain. The structure of these smart contracts allows programmers to add computer code to a wallet address, which increases the functionality of the platform considerably compared to traditional cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Because Ethereum (ETH) is currently the most popular “smart contract” platform, users have a unique opportunity to profit from the exponential growth in this space by “mining” this cryptocurrency coin.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Recently, MinerGate made significant update of the Ethereum ETH mining pool with enhanced stability, adaptive job difficulty and higher profitability for miners. This is essentially just a desktop computer without the case (and extra GPUs). &nbsp;Below I’ve lined out 10 essential tips for you to be successful at building your own mining rig and beginning to earn some extra income.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Make sure you have all components on hand before you begin the build. These are the things you will need:</p>\n<p>Power Supply (PSU) – I recommend using a 1500W with a rating of at least Gold. Also, make sure the unit you purchase is fully modular. You can pick one up here on Amazon.</p>\n<p>Motherboard – For this component, you need to make sure that you select a motherboard that has multiple PCIe slots for your graphics cards. The board I use is here on Amazon.</p>\n<p>Memory – All computers need RAM memory to function. I recommend using at least 16GB of RAM on your mining rig. You can pick that up here.</p>\n<p>Hard Drive – I recommend using a SSD for storage of your operating system. Here is the one I use.</p>\n<p>PCI risers – Each GPU must connect to the motherboard using these components. You will need to purchase 1 riser for each GPU that your rig has. You can find those here.</p>\n<p>CPU and fan – A compatible CPU for this motherboard can be found here. You will need to install a CPU fan to keep it cool, and you can find that here.</p>\n<p>Graphics cards (GPUs) – This motherboard is equipped to run up to 5 cards. Keep in mind that you can add cards to the rig as you scale up, so you can start with 2 or 3 cards and work your way up to 5. I recommend NVIDIA 1070s, and you can find those here. You can also use 1060s or 1080s. Just make sure that they have at least 8GB of memory.</p>\n<p>Frame – You can build your own wooden frame like the one in the picture, or you can search for “mining rig frame” online and find many options.</p>\n<p>Windows 10 – This is the best operating system for running the MinerGate software which is what I recommend for mining Ethereum</p>\n<p>After putting your rig components together, I recommend testing it with just one GPU to ensure that it works. After finding that the card works, add another card and retest. Continue this process until you have successfully installed all cards and they are working properly. There are many online tutorials for assembling your components. A quick search for “build and Ethereum miner” will give you the info you need.</p>\n<p>Use mining software that is easy to set up and is highly profitable. The software that I recommend, is MinerGate. I prefer this software, because it has a feature called “smart mining” that will mine the most profitable coin for your rig. Just use the link above to download the software, run the benchmarks, and begin mining! It’s that easy!</p>\n<p>Provide proper ventilation for your Ethereum mining rig. Computers work best in cool conditions, so it is essential that you place the rig in a room with proper ventilation. In addition, I recommend using fans to blow air directly onto the mining rig, so that you have proper air flow. Also, do not place the rig is a small enclosed room. The bigger the room, the better your rig will perform.</p>\n<p>Monitor your mining rig for at least 24 hours to ensure that it is stable. There may be some troubleshooting you need to do in order to ensure that your rig will be stable, so be patient with this process.</p>\n<p>Always keep an eye on the status of your rig. In the mining game, time is money, so your mining rig needs to be running 24 hours a day in order to maximize your profit.
