| body | I really like the mental exercise of the the "what if" scenario. I think some questions I would probably have would be: What would it like to be human? Will that in itself be redefined? What will the family structure look like? Will the world be subject to one culture or will there still be any diversity left? Will man still be on earth? Will man have a greater presence, perhaps even colonization and exploration, in space? I think you have some good thoughts. You think about some of the reasons why people even are Christians. For instance, many are brought up in Christian homes. Will that even be a thing? People turn to Jesus in desperation and need, but when you take certain needs out of the equation, do they still turn to him? I also consider how our emotions play a role in our longing and breaking, and when you physically and chemically alter the body in a way where it's not able to have natural processes of emotion, then where does that leave one in their own pursuit of God? I'm very interested to see more of these musings and where it takes you! |

| title | Turning Down The Dial |
| body | The last couple of weeks have been very difficult for me with my ongoing health saga. I've been reminded of the constant insurance battle I'm up against, and the fact that I'm not in control of my own treatments. I've also been reminded of the most devastating part of the cycle I've been on - the constant loop of hope and dashed hopes. That's something to dive into for another post, though. The biggest problems started when I had a cortisone injection in my shoulder a little over a week ago. I've had many of these in the past, some of which caused me some some emotional issues due to the amount of steroids I had injected in me over a short period of time; however, this time I had more of an adverse physical reaction, as the injection seemingly caused stiffness in my neck and a dramatic increase in my migraines. I like to use the analogy of a turn-dial when it comes to my migraines and my tolerance to them and my ability to function. Most days I hover between 3 to 6 (out of 10), and while it's difficult, I've learned to be able to do things like participate in some social functions and do limited amounts of work while dealing with it. Now, before you judge, realize I am talking about migraines, and that my migraines are constant - as in, they don't go away, at all. It's one thing to soldier through things knowing you can pop some aspirin or rest and it go away, but for me I don't have that luxury. Often when I do things, I do so knowingly that over time my migraines will only increase in severity (sometimes it hits me the next day). Going with the turn-dial analogy, I know that as I participate in things that don't involve me resting, I am knowingly allowing that dial of migraines and pain to be turned up. Even right now as I type this small post I am doing something that is increasing my migraine because I am using my right arm and holding my head up unsupported. As I said before, though, I've learned to cope with a measure of pain, and I believe most people would be able to adapt in the same manner I have. I've learned that my "limit" as far as doing things is usually reaching a 7 (out of 10); however, when I reach that level I know that whatever I am doing, I need to finish it quickly and that I need to get to a place where I can rest and hopefully apply an ice pack to my head/neck/shoulder. The real problems arise when I reach that 8 or 9 on the scale. It's rare my migraine gets this bad, but when it happens things get scary for me. I start to get irrational, delusional, faint, etc... It's when things get like this for several days in a row when I get in a really bad place. This happened last week after the adverse reaction to the cortisone shot. I had around 4 days where my migraines were getting to that level, and I was having a difficult time calming them down. The best I could get them to was a 6 or 7, and if I did anything other that rest, I would quickly get back to those bad numbers. Luckily things subsided for me by the end of last weekend, but it took an extreme amount of rest and inactivity to do it. I'm still recovering from it this week, and it's in times like this where I can get depressed because I still have a necessity to work - still feel the need to participate in family and friend functions. My body and mind are beyond exhausted, but I have to soldier on. Sometimes I wish things were as simple as the turn-dial analogy. I wish there was a way for me, or anybody, to turn down that dial of pain and migraines at will. |

I've learned that my \"limit\" as far as doing things is usually reaching a 7 (out of 10); however, when I reach that level I know that whatever I am doing, I need to finish it quickly and that I need to get to a place where I can rest and hopefully apply an ice pack to my head/neck/shoulder.\n\nThe real problems arise when I reach that 8 or 9 on the scale. The best I could get them to was a 6 or 7, and if I did anything other that rest, I would quickly get back to those bad numbers.\n\nLuckily things subsided for me by the end of last weekend, but it took an extreme amount of rest and inactivity to do it. I'm still recovering from it this week, and it's in times like this where I can get depressed because I still have a necessity to work - still feel the need to participate in family and friend functions. My body and mind are beyond exhausted, but I have to soldier on.\n\nSometimes I wish things were as simple as the turn-dial analogy. I wish there was a way for me, or anybody, to turn down that dial of pain and migraines at will.",

| body | I'm so sorry to hear that! It was a constant battle for me too ... some days were okay, others were horrible. And it was so hard to explain it to anyone because on the outside I looked "fine." I had terrible stomach pain (probably from stress) and when the doctors couldn't diagnose it, I spent days in bed. But I think that was more from the depression, which was really the hardest battle of all. From what I've been told, I hit the left side of my forehead (on another football player's shoulder) and then fell straight back. I blacked-out so I don't remember. I got whiplash from the back of my head hitting the ground and bouncing back up (no helmet because it was just flag football). As my body tried to compensate for the pain in the left side of my head, my right shoulder started to take the strain. The muscle between my neck and my shoulder just got tighter and tighter. That was one area the massage therapist had to focus on ... of course by the time I saw her, I was a mess and it took a lot of time to get "untangled" (at least that's how it felt). My migraines also got worse as my shoulder tightened because, from what I understand, the muscle contracting blocks the spinal fluid. With the pain in my right shoulder, my left hip started taking the strain. Basically, there was a zigzag effect. I felt like the more time went on, the more pain I noticed. To some extent, I think that because there was so much pain at the beginning, my mind wasn't aware of all of it (sort of like coping with trauma). There was also the build-up of pain after trying to live with it (or ignore it) for so long. I am really thankful for my massage therapist. She taught me how to "listen" to my body (watch for warning signs, track triggers, etc.) and take better care of myself. Looking back, I was in so much pain, I was just trying to get through each day. But over time, I was able to implement what she was telling me. I hope that is helpful! Please feel free to ask more questions. And no rush ... I understand that you have to take it one day at a time! :) |

| body | So glad you found out about trigger points and dry-needling. It has really been the most effective form of treatment I've had so far. My PT has also helped me learn about things I can do at home to prevent from further-agitating those trigger points, and I've been able to make some simple lifestyle changes in order to help myself. Even things as simple as the way we sit, pick up objects, or even the way we bend our arms when using them can influence trigger points. I've also learned how to "listen" more to my body when it comes to pain. Dry-needling has actually taught me how to map how pain travels in my body. For instance, if my fingers are going numb, I know it's likely coming from my lower neck or my "upper trap" as my PT calls it. If I take tension off of that area and apply ice, I can usually get the numbness to subside in a few minutes. So, eventhough I may not have found a fix-all for my issues, just the knowledge of how to treat myself and know my pain better has made a big difference in my quality of life. |

| body | Thank you for the info! Sorry for the delay in my response. I've had a rough couple of weeks where it's difficult for me to sit up, unsupported; so, I've greatly limited my computer time. You mentioned you had a messed up shoulder from the concussion. I'd really like to know more about that if you don't mind. The reason is I'm actually having trouble with my shoulder as of late, as well. I actually just had an MRI on it yesterday. My initial injury was in December 2014, but I didn't have noticeable shoulder pains until last summer; however, it's within the realm of possibility I've had shoulder issues the whole time, or sustained them at the time of the initial injury. It's something I likely won't be able to get concrete answers on, but something that's become a big issue in my recovery because using my right arm/shoulder makes my migraines get worse in a hurry. I was wondering what your experience with your shoulder was. |

| title | |
| body | I had my concussion in 2005. And I don’t think I started the massage therapy until summer or fall of the next year (I have almost no memory from that time ... I “know” what I did but it’s all very blurry. That’s something I had to get used to and be okay with for awhile. My short term memory was awful ... better now). I’m not a doctor ... but this is what I learned. (My Mom did a lot of research on concussions and stumbled on this information.) So with a neck injury, it affects the cord that carries your spinal fluid between your head (cranium) and end of your spine (sacrum). Essentially, the fluid can get blocked, which causes headaches. Craniosacral focuses on releasing the fluid. I had a great therapist, who used techniques that basically taught my body to release. (Rather than forcing it like a chiropractor might do.) Over time, I could feel my body responding to the massage. It helped with other problems too ... I had a messed up hip and shoulder from the concussion. (I got my concussion playing intramural football.) I visited her twice a week for a year, then went down to once a week, then every other week. After year three, I think I was down to once a month. I don’t live near her anymore, but I learned the techniques to help my body release. Headaches are pretty rare now, but those still work. I did visit several other massage therapists, so I’d just caution you that all are not alike. You want licensed craniosacral and someone you feel comfortable with. I found that ones connected to a chiropractors’ office were usually more professional. Please let me know if you have any questions! Some of the terms may sound funny, so let me know if I should clarify anything... |

| body | I'm glad to read that you eventually did get to where you felt normal again. That actually gives hope to me, as I'm only 3 years out and still learning more about my injury. I'd love to hear more about this craniosacral massage therapy. What's it like? When in the 5 years did you start? How did you learn about it? How long did you do it for and are you still doing it? |
