| title | Six of the World’s Most Extravagant (and Expensive) Homes |
| body | When it comes to buying or renovating your own home, you probably have a tick list of things that really matter: a functional kitchen, for example; a decent bathroom; maybe some outdoor space. But when money is no object, the list of what’s considered to be essential drastically changes. Everyone knows that rich people have swimming pools in their houses, and cinemas, and wine cellars, but some of these properties go even further than that. We scoured the internet to find some of the planet’s most expensive – and extravagant – homes, so that you can focus on hunting down your own. Antilia The multi-storey mansion with its very own place of worship Where’s the most expensive house in the world? LA? Dubai? The French Riviera? Actually, turns out it’s in Mumbai, India. The spectacular, 27-storey Antilia is a signature shape in the skyline of the Bollywood city. It’s owned by Mukesh Ambani, a business tycoon who’s the richest man in India, and it’s home to him and his family, as well as their 600-strong team of staff. Topped by three helipads (naturally), this stand-out skyscraper boasts nine lifts, a spa, a theatre and its very own temple. Antilia is named after a mythical city swallowed by the Atlantic Ocean. According to reports, this remarkable home cost around $1 billion to build. Antilia Image Source Villa Leopolda The seaside villa that’s starred in the movies The French Riviera is widely-known to be one of the most expensive places in the world to buy a property, and is home to a plethora of celebrities and tycoons. This sprawling villa, located above the dazzling Mediterranean in Villefranche-sur-Mer, is one of the most expensive of them all. It was built in 1902 for Belgian Kind Leopold II. In 2008, Russian businessman Mikhail Prokhorov put down a deposit of the equivalent of $75 million on the house. When the global financial crisis hit, he pulled out, but a Nice court ordered that Prokhorov could not have his deposit back. Instead, owner of the property, Lily Safra, distributed the money between charities. Villa Leopolda has starred in two iconic movies: The Red Shoes and To Catch a Thief. The villa has an on-site commercial greenhouse, 11 bedrooms, and, just in case none of the loos are free when you need to go, 14 bathrooms. In 2016, another of Leopold’s former homes, Les Cedres, in nearby Saint Cap Ferrat, went on the market for a mind-blowing one billion euros. Villa Leopolda Image Source Updown Court The country pile where even the driveway is heated This flawless white mansion might look like it’s in the Californian hills, but it actually stands proud in the Surrey village of Windlesham. It isn’t the first abode to grace the 58-acre woodland estate, though: the original Updown Court was built in 1924. 63 years later, just before it was due to go on the market, the house was destroyed by fire from downed electrical lines in The Great Storm of 1987. In the late nineties, the new Updown Court was constructed. And it was massive. To give you an idea of scale, this house is even bigger than Buckingham Palace. It comes with everyday amenities like a beauty salon, bowling alley and five pools including an infinity pool Guests lucky enough to visit the 103-room property will approach via its £2 million pound heated marble driveway. In 2011, Updown Court went on the market for $75 million, making it the most expensive UK property outside London, but an anonymous businessman snapped it up for a snip a just $35 million. Updown Court Image Source 924 Bel Air Road The incredible residence that has $30 million worth of cars thrown in It’s difficult to not be impressed by this $250 million dollar Californian home. With breathtaking views of the ocean and hills all around, this newly-constructed, absolute top-of-the-range pile offers absolutely everything you could possibly wish for. There’s an infinity pool with a pop-up cinema screen for those poolside movie sessions, not one but two fully-stocked wine cellars, an entire wall of enormous glass sweet dispensers and (this is the best bit) a garage with a selection of cars worth more than $30 million. Luxury developer Bruce Makowsky has thought of absolutely everything the discerning homeowner might want and need, and no expense has been spared – in fact, he has even boasted that there was no budget involved in the creation of the dreamy house. As well as throwing in a fleet of luxury cars, Makowsky’s also included a hundred carefully-curated art installations. We think this one could be described as ‘ready to move in’. 924 Bel Air Road Image Source One Hyde Park Penthouse The apartment with a passage to a luxury hotel London’s high property prices are world-famous, and when it comes to the capital, no place is as pricey as Knightsbridge. It should come as little surprise, then, that this phenomenal penthouse is located in the wealthy borough, which is also home to Harrods. From the outside, it looks like a pretty normal new-build, but the interior is packed with high-end fixtures and fittings and Bondesque security features. Naturally, a home like this is going to attract the very rich, which is perhaps why this flat comes with bullet-proof windows and SAS-trained bodyguards. Handily, it also boasts an underground passage to the nearby Mandarin Oriental Hotel, should you get bored of the luxury at home. When it sold in for $140 million in 2010, this was the world’s most expensive apartment. One Hyde Park Penthouse Image Source 432 Park Avenue A penthouse perched atop a very lofty tower When it comes to pricey city pads, New York is up there with London. And few skylines are as iconic as Manhattan, with the world-famous Chrysler and Empire State buildings. In 2015, a new figure appeared on that skyline, and it was taller than both the Chrysler and the Empire State. It can be seen on the image below, towering over the city to the right of the Empire State Building. At 425 metres tall, 432 Park Avenue is the tallest residential building in the world. It houses 104 luxury condominiums, but the penthouse, sitting pretty at the very top, was always going to come at a price. To be more specific, The Penthouse at 432 Park Avenue came on to the market at $95 million dollars. Eventually, it was sold for a reported $87.7 million to Fawaz Al Hokair, a Saudi Arabian businessman. The apartment comes with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and priceless views over Central Park and that iconic skyline. But it’s not the most expensive apartment ever to be sold in New York: that accolade goes to the penthouse topping nearby One57, which sold to an anonymous buyer for just over $100 million. 432 Park Avenue Image Source Maison L’Amitie The most expensive house ever to be torn down? When Donald Trump sold Maison L’Amitie (meaning ‘House of Friendship’ in French) for $95 million in 2008, he more than doubled his money. Trump Properties said they’d spent millions on renovating the Regency-style Florida mansion, but the claims were surrounded by controversy. Either way, Trump had made a considerable profit on the palatial home, which came with its own tennis house and a garage fit for fifty cars. Nothing lasts forever, though, and less than ten years later, the House of Friendship no longer exists. In Palm Springs, where it once stood, beachfront soil comes at such a premium that its current owner decided the most profitable thing to do would be to tear it down and sell off parcels of the precious land. What could be more extravagant than demolishing a $95 million dollar home? |

To be more specific, The Penthouse at 432 Park Avenue came on to the market at $95 million dollars.\n\nEventually, it was sold for a reported $87.7 million to Fawaz Al Hokair, a Saudi Arabian businessman. The apartment comes with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and priceless views over Central Park and that iconic skyline. But it’s not the most expensive apartment ever to be sold in New York: that accolade goes to the penthouse topping nearby One57, which sold to an anonymous buyer for just over $100 million.\n\n432 Park Avenue\nImage Source\n\nMaison L’Amitie\n\nThe most expensive house ever to be torn down?\nWhen Donald Trump sold Maison L’Amitie (meaning ‘House of Friendship’ in French) for $95 million in 2008, he more than doubled his money. Trump Properties said they’d spent millions on renovating the Regency-style Florida mansion, but the claims were surrounded by controversy.\n\nEither way, Trump had made a considerable profit on the palatial home, which came with its own tennis house and a garage fit for fifty cars. Nothing lasts forever, though, and less than ten years later, the House of Friendship no longer exists.\n\nIn Palm Springs, where it once stood, beachfront soil comes at such a premium that its current owner decided the most profitable thing to do would be to tear it down and sell off parcels of the precious land. What could be more extravagant than demolishing a $95 million dollar home?\n\n",

| title | The Most Important Asset in Your Life |
| body | The Most Important Asset in Your Life “Money isn’t the most important thing in the world. Your time is.” Parents, teachers, and mentors all around the world have spoken these words to us, in one form of another, throughout our lives. It makes sense, too. Most of us come to realize at some point that money is a means, not an end. It affords opportunities, but as research has shown, there are diminishing returns to what it can do for you. In fact, the strongest link between money and well-being comes from its ability to buy you time through conveniences. Our time is limited, and the prevailing wisdom is that the more we have of it, the more opportunities there are for us to experience joy and fulfillment. But is that the whole story? Is time really what adds more to life? I’d argue otherwise. The most important asset in your life isn’t time, but attention. The quality of the experiences in your life doesn’t depend on how many hours there are in the day, but in how the hours you have are used. You can spend 80 years of a life with as much free time as you want and still not get out of it as much as someone who only lived for 40 years but managed to appropriately direct attention to the things that mattered to them. Although time is indeed limited, with attention, it can be diluted to expand beyond what most other people get out of the same quantity. Unfortunately, this happens to be harder than it sounds. The World Is Designed Against You One of the biggest problems of our generation is that while the ability to manage our attention is becoming increasingly valuable, the world around us is being designed to steal away as much of it as possible. The internet and the technology companies that are built on it have democratized opportunity. It’s hard to argue that the net effect of these innovations isn’t positive. That said, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t costs. Smartphone addictions are real. Technology-induced stress is real. Companies like Google and Facebook aren’t just creating products anymore. They’re building ecosystems. And the most effective way to monetize an ecosystem is to begin with engagement. It’s by designing their features to ensure that we give up as much of our attention as possible. Last year, Tristan Harris, a former Design Ethicist at Google, shared how designers create product functions that exploit our mental impulses. They find blind spots in our perception, and they use them to influence our behavior without us realizing. Every notification you receive, every email you get, and every website you browse is carefully created to ensure that you maximize the time you’re engaged with the company’s product. Today, more than ever, we need our mind back. Fortunately, there are ways to get it. Here are 3 methods that will improve the quality of your life. 1. Mindfulness Meditation In the Buddhist tradition and modern psychotherapy training, meditation is used to cultivate mindfulness as a means of being unconditionally present. The idea is to sit quietly in a space with your eyes closed focusing and observing what is occurring in your body and in your mind. It’s used to inspire relaxation, stress-reduction, and detachment from distractions. The practice is fairly straightforward. You simply sit and focus on a single thing in your surroundings. For most people, it’s their breath. They breathe in, and they breathe out, and they keep their attention on doing just that. Thoughts and a wandering mind are natural. The point isn’t necessarily to remove any sort of mental activity. It’s to observe it in the present. With time, this becomes easier, but if that doesn’t work, I’ve personally seen similar results by restricting my attention to a singular part of my surroundings while exercising or doing other simple, repetitive chores. By forcing yourself to focus your mind on one thing, you train your brain to develop a sense of control over your attention. Studies are continuing to show promise, with some suggesting notable results in as soon as 8 weeks. 2. Ruthless Single-Tasking Contrary to what some people believe, multi-tasking is rarely an effective way to be productive, especially not when it comes to mentally taxing work. Not only that, but it’s also harmful to your brain. Every time you move from one task to another while engaged in more than one thing, there is a cognitive cost that weights your mind down and causes needless stress. Even switching between multiple projects and work environments over longer periods leaves behind what business-school professor Sophie Leroy calls “attention residue,” and it affects your ability to focus on the new task. Single-tasking with deep focus for extended periods helps fight these adverse side-effects. It’s both more productive and more attention-friendly. In fact, the effects of single-tasking are similar to those inspired by mindfulness, and the more you do it, and the better you get at it, the greater your ability to purposefully direct your attention to where it matters. 3. Routine Detachment Impulsively checking notifications and mindless web-browsing may seem innocent enough, but they often lead to subtle, reactive tendencies. Every time you pull out your phone to scan your social media accounts, and every time a 10-minute internet break turns into an hour long binge, your brain is building a habit loop that reinforces itself to encourage such behavior. Naturally, these devices and technologies are an important part of modern life, but in order for them to be a net positive force in your life, you have to set boundaries. Routine detachment isn’t just ideal, but it’s critical. I personally try not to check my notifications and emails until at least 3PM, and on the days that I succeed, I feel a notable difference in the level of control I have over my day. I also routinely go a full 24 to 48 hours without touching my computer or my smartphone. Different things will work for different people, but you don’t quite realize how much of your daily attention is being hijacked until you step away. The Stakes Have Never Been Higher As the legendary psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi says in his seminal book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience: “Control of consciousness determines the quality of life.” Attention has the power to make you happier by helping you appreciate the little things that are easily neglected in day to day life. Attention can allow you to bypass the limitations imposed by death because it inspires you to better use the time you already have. Attention can guide you to a fulfilled life by forcing focus onto the things that really matter to you, rather than the things that steal you away. Happiness, productivity, presence, and fulfillment all find their roots in your ability to proactively control where you direct your mental energy. Although the world around us is working harder and harder to take it away from us, with awareness, practice, and the right habits, we can fight back, and we can take control of our own minds. If you protect and cultivate your attention, there is almost nothing stopping you from living the life you want because that’s where it all begins. In fact, it may just be the only thing in your way. |

| title | The next energy revolution is here |
| body | Gao Jifan, President , China Photovoltaic Industry Association Over the period of one decade, the capitalized cost of generating solar energy in 2015 has decreased to as low as one sixth the cost in 2005, and I believe it will not take long for solar energy generation to be economically cheaper than thermal power generation worldwide. Every year at the World Economic Forum, energy consumption and climate change are always hot topics. Looking back at the history of human civilisation, for a long time, firewood was the primary source of energy; however, back then, energy ultilization was low and as such air pollution emissions were also low. The invention of the steam engine in the 18th century marked the beginning of the industrial revolution, which led to the mining and consumption of coal on a large scale. In 1920, coal accounted for 62% of primary energy consumption, indicating that the world had entered the Coal Age. In 1965, petroleum replaced coal as the most consumed energy, which led the world into the “petroleum age”. In 1979, petroleum contributed 54% of the world energy consumption, marking the second energy revolution from coal to petroleum. Up until now, fossil fuels have continued to dominate as our energy resource. With each new age, the use and efficiency of energy have increased significantly — as have, unfortunately, levels of severe environmental pollution. Our future energy system must therefore be clean and low-carbon to ensure the sustainable development of human civilisation. We are now embarking on a new era of energy revolution. The energy system of the future should have the following three features: Low carbon energy production. Fossil fuels have to be burned to release energy, which caused emissions and environmental pollution. The existing intensive industrial usage of fossil fuels has significantly harmed the environment. Meanwhile, for most economically under-developed countries around the world, the cost of clean energy is too high to be affordable. Solar power, however, is one of the best solutions. Not only is solar energy production clean, it may also soon become a much more affordable source of energy, as technology development and innovation continues to reduce the cost of solar power generation. As mentioned, the cost of solar energy generation in 2015 has decreased to as low as one sixth the cost in 2005. In the near future, solar power will be less expensive than coal power. Renewable clean energy replacing fossil fuels is the trend of the ongoing energy revolution. Panda power: An aerial view of a panda-shaped solar plant in Datong, Shanxi province. Image: Panda Green Energy Group/Handout via REUTERS Energy independence and connectivity. As a typical outcome of the industrial age, the existing electrical energy system has been made of large-scale hydropower plants and coal power plants in resource-rich regions, supplying their output to consumption centres through a grid system. Such development not only requires enormous investment, it also causes serious environmental problems. The energy system of the future, dominated by renewables, will be built on the basis of regions. Each region will have its own energy supply system. Thus, forming a new system with a regional power network which would also be interconnected with networks in other regions, so as to balance the system and ensure a consistent energy supply. An energy system like this would be far more optimised than our existing one. Energy sharing. When solar energy is adopted by hundreds of factories and thousands of houses, the power supply system will be totally changed. Every school, every factory and every family will become a micro clean energy power station. We will be both energy consumers as well as energy producers. The direction of new energy revolution is to build an energy-sharing system, based on a large database and a smart-energy connection platform. Such a vision has already been realized in Germany, where many households are equipped with solar panels on their rooftops. If one family produces more electricity more than they use, they share the extra power with other families via regional grid. Establishing an energy-sharing system can further decrease the cost of adopting clean energy. It can be a new model of shared energy and a shared economy. Promoting the new model of energy consumption in less-developed regions. While developed countries are changing their energy structure from fossil fuels to renewables, many less-developed regions are still short of any kind of energy supply models. Those countries could skip the traditional power system, and directly adopt new clean energy. At present, 1.4 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity, of which 500 million are in Asia. In future, we can build a clean energy supply system featured by solar power, with distributed and micro power networks, to make electricity accessible to everyone on earth by 2030. This plan can totally meet the requirement of access to energy under the UN’s Agenda 21. This kind of energy revolution will bring universal value and significance. Throughout the history of humanity, industrial revolutions have also been energy revolutions. Every change of a dominant energy source has been a revolution. Each time, a change had resulted in industrial and social developments. The next energy revolution is now at accelerating in pace, propelled by technology development and innovation. Consequently, the connection to grid of PV (solar) energy at a fair price will become a reality faster than we expect. |

"body": "Gao Jifan, President , China Photovoltaic Industry Association\nOver the period of one decade, the capitalized cost of generating solar energy in 2015 has decreased to as low as one sixth the cost in 2005, and I believe it will not take long for solar energy generation to be economically cheaper than thermal power generation worldwide.\n\n\n\nEvery year at the World Economic Forum, energy consumption and climate change are always hot topics.\nLooking back at the history of human civilisation, for a long time, firewood was the primary source of energy; however, back then, energy ultilization was low and as such air pollution emissions were also low.\nThe invention of the steam engine in the 18th century marked the beginning of the industrial revolution, which led to the mining and consumption of coal on a large scale. In 1920, coal accounted for 62% of primary energy consumption, indicating that the world had entered the Coal Age.\nIn 1965, petroleum replaced coal as the most consumed energy, which led the world into the “petroleum age”. In 1979, petroleum contributed 54% of the world energy consumption, marking the second energy revolution from coal to petroleum. Up until now, fossil fuels have continued to dominate as our energy resource.\nWith each new age, the use and efficiency of energy have increased significantly — as have, unfortunately, levels of severe environmental pollution. Our future energy system must therefore be clean and low-carbon to ensure the sustainable development of human civilisation.\nWe are now embarking on a new era of energy revolution. The energy system of the future should have the following three features:\nLow carbon energy production. Fossil fuels have to be burned to release energy, which caused emissions and environmental pollution. The existing intensive industrial usage of fossil fuels has significantly harmed the environment. Meanwhile, for most economically under-developed countries around the world, the cost of clean energy is too high to be affordable.\nSolar power, however, is one of the best solutions. Not only is solar energy production clean, it may also soon become a much more affordable source of energy, as technology development and innovation continues to reduce the cost of solar power generation.\nAs mentioned, the cost of solar energy generation in 2015 has decreased to as low as one sixth the cost in 2005. In the near future, solar power will be less expensive than coal power. Renewable clean energy replacing fossil fuels is the trend of the ongoing energy revolution.\n\nPanda power: An aerial view of a panda-shaped solar plant in Datong, Shanxi province. Image: Panda Green Energy Group/Handout via REUTERS\nEnergy independence and connectivity. As a typical outcome of the industrial age, the existing electrical energy system has been made of large-scale hydropower plants and coal power plants in resource-rich regions, supplying their output to consumption centres through a grid system. Such development not only requires enormous investment, it also causes serious environmental problems.\nThe energy system of the future, dominated by renewables, will be built on the basis of regions. Each region will have its own energy supply system. Thus, forming a new system with a regional power network which would also be interconnected with networks in other regions, so as to balance the system and ensure a consistent energy supply. An energy system like this would be far more optimised than our existing one.\nEnergy sharing. It can be a new model of shared energy and a shared economy.\nPromoting the new model of energy consumption in less-developed regions. While developed countries are changing their energy structure from fossil fuels to renewables, many less-developed regions are still short of any kind of energy supply models. Those countries could skip the traditional power system, and directly adopt new clean energy.\nAt present, 1.4 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity, of which 500 million are in Asia. In future, we can build a clean energy supply system featured by solar power, with distributed and micro power networks, to make electricity accessible to everyone on earth by 2030. This plan can totally meet the requirement of access to energy under the UN’s Agenda 21. This kind of energy revolution will bring universal value and significance.\nThroughout the history of humanity, industrial revolutions have also been energy revolutions. Every change of a dominant energy source has been a revolution. Each time, a change had resulted in industrial and social developments. The next energy revolution is now at accelerating in pace, propelled by technology development and innovation. Consequently, the connection to grid of PV (solar) energy at a fair price will become a reality faster than we expect.",
