| body | Thank you so much for sharing this amazing post with us! Have you heard about Partiko? It’s a really convenient mobile app for Steem! With Partiko, you can easily see what’s going on in the Steem community, make posts and comments (no beneficiary cut forever!), and always stayed connected with your followers via push notification! Partiko also rewards you with Partiko Points (3000 Partiko Point bonus when you first use it!), and Partiko Points can be converted into Steem tokens. You can earn Partiko Points easily by making posts and comments using Partiko. We also noticed that your Steem Power is low. We will be very happy to delegate 15 Steem Power to you once you have made a post using Partiko! With more Steem Power, you can make more posts and comments, and earn more rewards! If that all sounds interesting, you can: - Download Partiko Android at [Google Play](http://bit.ly/2SRFIta) - Or Download Partiko iOS on the [App Store](https://apple.co/2PcXkSd) Thank you so much for reading this message! |

| title | Idea for a temporal creative work based on a smart contract |
| body | I have a few ideas about creative works that are totally possible, yet people don't seem to be doing. I keep telling myself I'm going to get started on some of these *any day now* but it never seems to happen. At some I just need to do these things, or put them out there for others to do, or at least get some feedback on. So here is one I'd like to partner up on: Note: I'm describing this as an ERC-721 smart contract, but there's no need to restrict it to that specific technology. EOS offers a more secure platform to build this on, as do some others, but it will likely generate the highest amount of interest if built on Ethereum IMHO. I'm also more familiar with Solidity-based smart contracts than with others (which may not matter depending on partners) but the idea will work on a variety of customizable smart contract platforms. An animated gif chopped into a small number of cells, each represented by an ERC-721 token, but the smart contract has a few customized functions. Each token + image is sold to a distinct purchaser, to the extent that the artist can discern. The purpose of the custom functions added to the contract is to allow the entire animation to come together over time, and to re-form into a single work of art. The custom functions would ensure that secondary sales occur only when the purchaser is already an owner of one or more of the existing pieces (token+image) If none of the owners dies without making some arrangements for claiming the work by heirs, then it's quite possible that a single owner will emerge over time to own all the pieces. That is, the complete set of tokens, each uniquely tied to one cell or frame via hashes, plus the animation itself. Who knows, the artist may be long dead by then! I'm not aware of a temporal work like this, that re-assembles itself over time in a manner controlled by the purchasers of said artwork. How long that proces takes, and who emerges with the composite work is a process that is an integral part of the work. In some sense that process and how it unfolds over time is what makes the work interesting.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://chainwars.one/idea-for-a-temporal-creative-work-based-on-a-smart-contract/

|

| title | Tokenization of Assets - Physical versus Digital |
| body | I claim that tokenizing digital assets is compelling because it creates opportunities to do new things, and tokenizing physical assets usually does not. A simple thought experiment: If we each paid $1000 USD to someone who offered us gold, but they return with $1000 USD worth of gold, and $1000 worth of gold-backed tokens, would you prefer to own the tokens? I believe that most of us would want the actual gold. Is there an analog with digital assets? Why not? I think you'd have to agree there is a difference. I'm going to oversimplifiy things slightly in order to highlight the differences, while still addressing the rather nuanced situations in a variety of cases. I will not be talking about composite items, that have both physical and digital components. I will not be addressing securities on the blockchain - i.e. ownership in a company or legal entity governed. I believe the thought experiment posed above illustrates that tokenized physical assets incur additonal risk, and this is the first key difference in my view. Tokenization of Physical Assets Have Increased Levels of Risk Let's begin with the extreme case - real property whose ownership is represented by a token. This will be governed by the local laws in almost any jurisdiction. If I show up in court with legal title and you show up with a blockchain-based claim of ownership, we can be pretty sure which one of us has the valid claim in the eyes of the law. A car, or any other physical asset that must have ownership information registered with the state can also have ownership based on possession of a token, but the official claim will take precedence when ownership is contested. If we're talking about a book or a painting, then a token representing ownership is viable, and can serve as an agreement about ownership and transfer of said ownership, but would seem to offer few advantages. Whether or not it seems viable to have ownership of a particular physical item represented by a token, it does seem to present additiional risks. New methods of fraud are made possible online, and new ways the owner or creator can defraud buyers are enabled. In summary, there don't seem to be advantages tokenizing physical goods that mitigate the new ways problems can arise when using digital representations of ownership for physical items. Tokenizing digital assets allows the creator to continue to add new functionality after the intial sale Suppose I sell you a token representing ownership of a digital work, let's say an image. It's easy to imagine a few ways of enhancing the digital good that you've purchased from me. Perhaps I'll make additional related works available to you as an exclusive perk, like the DJ Pepe Card, a raprepepe card does. You still own the combination of token plus card image, but also get access to some exclusive beats from DJ J. Scrilla. Maybe I'll let you use the token for additonal things like access to a special website for owners of said asset. Easy to imagine, right? When you buy the combination of token and card image called Battlecorn, you're also granted access to play the Bitcorn Battle game, and possibly other games in future. Those things require no additional trust from the consumer of these added services or content, just the trust in the same software-based authentication and authorization. Contrast that to the world of physical goods. If you own real property by virtue of possession of a token, the issuer may still offer you additional items based on that token ownership. This is no different than the case of non-tokenized assets. They might even provide you token-controlled access, but now new hardware systems are needed to intermediate. As we extend more trust to new systems (e.g. hardware in this case) we open up new avenues for attackers and fraudsters. Suppose physical access to a house or car requires token ownership. We still need to trust the software that validates token ownership and validity. but now we also need to extend trust to the hardware manufacturer, the supply chain, the vendor who operates and/or maintains it, and the physical security that prevents it from being tampered with. Tokenizing digital assets enables persisting control after the intial sale at no additional cost This boils down to software controlling data, and endless possibilities can be imagined for creating items that function over time in unique ways. I ahve a couple ideas about this, and I don't want to spill the beans, but let's consider the earlier example of DJ Pepe tokens, that allow holders early access to songs and/or videos. Bottom line - tokenzing physical items incurs additional risks and requires extending additional trust with limited or no benefits. Physical - additional risk and trust requirements and for what? Digital - additional capabilities without adding risk or requiring additional trust. Stay tuned - if I get enough interest I'll argue the other side of this in the next post.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://chainwars.one/tokenization-of-assets-physical-versus-digital/

|

The subject comes up in the context of real estate, creative works and more. However I find that the assumptions are not well thought out and I don't believe this is a practical approach to take. Four proposed solutions to this issue, specific to the context of creative works, from Theo Goodman's Medium post are:

Use a verifier

Use a platform to release your artwork

Public announcement

Use an OpenDime

Let me start with the last one. This solution is the only one that works in my estimation. A solid chain of custody for said work is established from artist to purchaser. To make it work for resale, another OpenDime will need to be used, making frequent resale cumbersome. Public announcement is a good approach, but cannot avoid certain attack scenarios. Simply having a louder voice online would enable an attacker to drown out the artist long enough for fraud to occur. They might even hijack the artist's social media accounts to effectively silence the artist who normally makes announcements using these platforms, leaving the artist just one email account compromise away from having a serious problem. Use a verifier is the first proposed solution. Using a trusted 3rd party is the status quo at auction houses like Christie's, but if we're going to rely upon a trusted real world authority why do we need to use blockchain? Finally there is the proposed solution of using a platform to release artwork. This is easily the most troubling of them all, but also the most widely used strategy it seems. At least the current crop of platforms, which are all Ethereum-based to my knowledge, are entirely inadequate for physical works for a few reasons. Here are 3:

Ethereum apps are almost always reliant on Infura, a single point of failure, since it's damn near impossible to keep a node in sync for a startup. The massive bloat which became a substantial obstacle this year means node operators find it challenging to keep their nodes in sync. This will get far worse still if a "killer app" is found fro Ethereum smart contracts. I know devs of a couple Ethereum-based games who cite this as their primary concern with the platform.

The smart contract technology in Ethereum is highly suspect. Most are coded in Solidity, which has yet to be really tested. Despite the numerous hacks for hundreds of millions of dollars and scores of smart contract auditing startups, attackers have in fact been exploiting errors in coding logic. They have not yet even bothered to attack the compiler; there's too much low hanging fruit already. These are not secure, and there are no real signs that's changing anytime soon in spite of numerous efforts.

ERC721, the unique token standard of choice for most artists, is more complex than ERC20 tokens, and give attackes more opportunities to act in a malicious manner. This is not simply a case of protecting against an adversary calling a token transfer function to take ownership of the tokens, which has plagued so many ERC20s. This actually opens up new possibilities for unintended modification of data associated with tokens as well.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://chainwars.one/tokenizing-physical-assets/

|

| title | Gauss: Amazing Math Hero |
| body |
Carl Friedrich Gauss is absolutely one of my favorite mathematicians of all time, contributing to a wide variety of fields. For my money he's in the top 3, but by any objective measure he should be considered among the brightest lights in the history of Mathematics. Guass made important contributions to geometry, number theory and much more - even astronomy! Read on for some of the highlights of the amazing body of work he produced. In fact, he made progres in many areas and never even published the results! He said that proofs should not be published when first discovered, rather one should keep searching for the "best" proof. Gauss was born in a small city in Germany, which was not a leading center for Mathematics at that time, although he led the ascension of Göttingen University to the top ranks of Math. The leading edge in Mathematics had been the French at that time, after the French Revolution, but Gauss was an extraordinary thought leader, and his students became famous in their own right, like Riemann and Dedekind. His university was the center of the Math world, until the Nazis basically dismantled the department, kicking out the Jewish professors and showing no love to Gauss. Perhaps the most famous example of his intellect was when he was 8 years old in grade school and his teacher attempted to occupy the children by having them calculate the sum of numbers from 1 to 100. His method was famously to observe that the sum was equivalent to 50 pairs of 101:
(1 + 100) + (2 + 99) + ... + (50 + 51) = 50 * 101 = 5050
His teacher was sufficiently impressed to approach the local bigshot, the Duke of Brunswick to sponsor him. He did so, and continued to do so until his death. Story goes that young Gauss closed the deal by impressing the Duke with a convincing proof that the square root of 2 was not a fraction. He got a math book that had logarithm tables and a list of prime numbers in the back, and this book set him off on an exploratory journey that is now legendary. He maintained an interest in number theory and prime numbers for the remainder of his life, as do I.

Click to see the construction animated
The following year he gained international acclaim by coming up with a construction of a 17 sided regular polygon, along with some important number theoretic discoveries. A regular polygon could be constructed for many small numbers like 3 (isoceles triangle), 4 (square), 5 (pentagon) and others for over two millenia - since the time of the Greeks. But when it comes to prime numbers, a construction was only known for 3 and 5. Gauss not only provided a construction for a 17 sided regular polygon, but demonstrated that this was possible only for five fermat primes - 3, 5, 17, 257 and 65537. He became interested in the density of primes, as everyone does in number theory, and made contributions for the rest of his life. Some of the most unique and innovative work he contributed had to do with clock arithmetic.
First of all his work with clock arithmetic led directly to what we consider to be modular arithmetic. Conceptually you can imagine a clock showing 9 o'clock. To figure out what time it will be four hours later, you must start counting again after 12. We usually write this as

(9 + 4) % 12 = 1
. Modular arithmetic is tremendously important in computer science, since they operate on integers. The set of integers, however, does NOT exhibit the property called closure with respect to division. TL;DR - for integers a and b, the quotient a/b does not always result in another integer. Computers solve this dilemna by spltting the division operator in to two - DIV and MOD, a direct consequence of Gauss' work. The second important set of results of his work with clock arithmetic was his contributions to number theory. He published Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, a groundbreaking work which included his famous proof of quadratic reciprocity, and it had important results related to prime numbers. Let me briefly mention a bit of work Gauss did in astronomy. People were trying to figure out the location of an asteroid called Ceres, which was at a point on the other side of the sun, preventing folks from observing. Only a tiny fraction of it's orbit had been observed - not enough for the astronomers to calculate where it might be currently. Gauss knew it would be on an elliptical orbit, had some candidate orbits, and proceeded to calculate it's actual position. This technique he developed involved determining the conic section from the scant observational evidence, yet it seems like this was just another interesting distraction for Gauss. He made substantial contributions to other fields of math, including what is now called Gaussian distributions. He did work in the field of magnetism, setting up an innovative lab. His work in curved geometries was astounding, along with his prodigeous student Riemann, and directly contributed to Einstein's findings in General Relativity. He did so many things that one can barely even mention them all in one article! His notes contained so many other great findings and musings and proofs that were not published during his lifetime, including Fourier transforms, named for the second person to have discovered them. Worst of all, I'm sure I've omitted some incredible work that he did which in and of itself made him a great mathemtician.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://chainwars.one/gauss-amazing-math-hero/

|

| title | CryptoFighters - engaging new Ethereum-based battling game |
| body |
Ever wish you could fight some of those CryptoKitties against each other? The creators say this is a common request and they're considering it. Meanwhile, you might want to check out CryptoFighters to see just how fun a well designed fighting game can be. Get a fighter from the marketplace - you'll need to have some ETH and have the metamask browser extension to easily play this game. This enables the website to know what fighters you have without a login. Click here to get started with metamask extension.
Money Matters

You can get started in CryptoFighters without blowing your budget, unlike some of these battling games like Fishbank or Etherbots where you can't really get started for less than 0.1 ETH to really participate in a meaningful way. You're going to pay at least 0.01 for any decent cryptobot, for example, and the roughly same again every time to fight, or to manufacture a new bot. This inhibits user participation, and interest in the game is usually diminished. In CryptoFighters, you can buy fighters in the marketplace to get started. I want to emphasize the superior business model because it translates into a better user experience - fighting is at the core of playing this game, not paying up to win! Fighting generates new recruits and costs only the Ethereum transaction fee. At the time of writing this, the cheapest fighters were selling for 0.0032 ETH (around $1.40 USD) and you can fight them for just the Ethereum transaction fee. You can fully participate and win fights and propsper without breaking the bank and that matters Having said that, you might want to pay up for rare ones in case the game takes off. Let's jump in and look at some of the details.
Game Mechanics

The main activity is fighting of course, and you can choose up to 5 fighters to attack a team of fighters already in the arena, or put your own team into the battle arena to defend against attackers. The attacker can choose fights in which they have an advantage, but there is a builtin bias to the defenders, as well as an element of chance, so funny things can happen. Fighting ability is determined by a combination of things including attributes, rank, level achieved, genes, and more - including a degree of randomness. Every team has a leader, and this leader will determine the type of recruit you'll win if successful in fighting. Fighters do get tired after fighting, depending on their vitality, and sometimes need a cooldown period. Before they recover, if they lead a team to battle they will not be able to recruit (get) a new fighter upon winning.
Fighter Types and Attributes

Generation zero fighters, called Generals, are produced by cryptofighters and sold on the marketplace. There will only be 25,000 total, so they will become increasingly scarce over time. The four basic types of fighters are Orc, Half-Elf, Succubus, and Mage. These mythical species have their unique characteristics, although individuals may vary widely. Orcs tend to be strong, succubuses tends to have a high dexterity value, while half-elves tend to have more balanced attributes. Exclusive: a fifth type is coming next week! Those attributes I refer to are strength, vitality, dexterity and luck. These values increase as the cryptofighter gain experience and rise to higher levels, making them more effective fighters. Experience points are the result of fights, so leveling up means fighting - the essence of this game. Getting to the second level is quick and easy, but each successive level takes longer. Experience points are awarded to both winner and loser, divided up equally among the team members.
Fighters and Fighting

Here's a typical detail page for a cryptofighter. As you can see it shows all the information about a cryptofighter, including the genes. Some genes are more rare than others, and presumably better in fights, so you may want to pay attention to detail. The arena is where fights happen. A common strategy seems to be to monitor the arena, waiting for a fight that looks easy enough to win. Winners get more experience points after all. Those points lead to increasing the attribute levels and ultimately winning more fights.
As mentioned earlier, fighters have a cooldown period, during which time they cannot win new recruits. There is also a time period during which fighters cannot gain experience points. These fighters can still fight, but take care if you want to recruit new fighters. Finally I have to observe that there is a similarity to CryptKitties in terms of inheritance. I'm talking about breeding, or in this case recruits. They inherit attributes from the team leaders, so choose your team leader for the attributes you want, and if you can choose from several fights, you may want to pick a tempting team leader to fight against. At the end of the day, choose to fight the best fight available, because fighting is the only way to get a team of fighters with high levels. I've put teams in the arena for a fraction of a dollar - just the miner fee. Note that you could use a "safe minimum" fee, but if someone else fights the team first, you'll miss the opportunity. All comments welcome, but if you take issue with something I wrote here you know what to do. Get your team of WEAKLINGS and come fight about it!

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://chainwars.one/cryptofighters-engaging-new-ethereum-based-battling-game/

|

| body | I'm not aware of any *nix based mining malware (could be wrong of course) - can you give an example? The reporting on this issue often bothers me (not your post tho!) because they typically conflate browser-based Javascript miners with actual malware. You're describing the worst of the worst, malware that persists on your device and is difficult to detect with signature based approaches like antivirus since there's no code written to the filesystem. That's nasty stuff! I'm very much an advocate of browser-based mining however, although the current offerings (esp. Coinhive) are really awful. Traditional advertising brokering is such a common vector for malware infections, supports criminal botnet operators, cheats content owners out of revenue due to high fraud rates and so much more. The site owners really have no control over who gets to place code on their page as it is brokered out by 3rd parties in real time. Voluntary, or at least clearly disclosed mining during the time you browse the site represents a safe way for site owners to monetize their content without exposing their readers to the risks of the current ad platforms. Not to mention the fact that on mobile devices most of the bandwidth is often used up by unwanted ad content, even if it isn't malicious. Just my two cents worth. I don't expect anyone to agree, so flame on! |
