bodyThe right way to do something is rarely the easiest, cheapest, or funnest way to do it. And to be fair, how often do we ask ourselves, is that the right thing to do? Need is a primary motivation, not ethics and morality. You need to wire all the nuts on a racing bike, never mind how time consuming it is. Yes, it is the right thing to do, but the need is in the safety rules, not in that ethically it is right. You need to follow the rules of the road to arrive safely at your destination, never mind it is ethically the right thing to ensure you are driving safely for others on the road as well. It is a shared experience, each holding each others lives in our hands, not out or some altruistic moral goodness, but the need to move from point to point safely. In breaking the laws, driving reckless, you are more than violating the rights of others to safely use the shared space, your ignorance and self centered approach is ethically and morally corrupt, in which we use the absolute construct of law to enforce the need. That’s a bit long winded, but in nearly every aspect of your life, your decisions are directed by need more than whether it is ethically right to do so. This may be a “duh” moment. Of course it is, I can hear you say. For this I say pull the thread. Tease it out and see where it takes you. If the decisions you are making…personal, political, theoretical…if these are based on need, as opposed to what is the right thing to do, at what cost will this turn in the long run?

bodyIn my wood shop there is a 1902 Stanley Bailey No. 5 plane that is a particular favorite. It isn’t the prettiest, or most exotic; there is a constant battle with surface rust and the allure the rosewood handles have long lost their luster. It is heavy and dented, more suited for the roll of a doorstop. It sits among Japanese pull planes, a Veritas low angle plane, and other specialty planes built for tongue and groove or moulding. It is an array of planes gathered from flea markets, eBay, and garage sales. And that Stanley Bailey No. 5 from 1902 is the personal favorite. To be fair it’s the blade I love the most. Old steel has way of holding its edge. It may take a little longer to achieve, a bit more temperamental in getting it set up right, but when that edge is sharp and that plane is in tune, shavings come off clean and effortlessly, even in the most stubborn of hardwoods. I use water stones for sharpening. They are messy and are not easy to keep. In the northern climates any sub zero weather will freeze the water trapped inside and crack them open. Loosing a stone costs between $50 and $100. Loosing all the stones to one freeze would be catastrophic. But setup right, with good concentration for holding the right angle with a well practiced motion, the edge produced is sharp, strong, and polished. All these elements brought together make the work easy, clean, and efficient…making the end product that much richer. And that is were I am in my professional world. By day I spend my time in editors and the command line bringing functionality to client websites. Mostly Drupal, sometimes Wordpress, usually PHP, but more and more Javascript. And I’m old. Gray hair, grumpy old. My first car was a 70 Mustang with an 8-track mounted under the dash. I started my computer career on SCO Unix and Novell, before they were together. My first Linux install was a stack of floppies, a Slackware install, I have no idea which kernel. I’ve been in this business for a long time, and there are a lot of younger people out there that can do a lot more, a lot faster, and sometimes that is scary. But we push on, always learning something new. At least trying. And that is the reason for this post. I have an overall strategy on being a better developer. These are some tactics and ideas I work with: 1. Stay off the bleeding edge: Too much happens too quickly in the world of development. By staying focused on tried and true I will spend less of my time spinning wheels in the sand. 2. Constantly watch what is coming off that bleeding edge to see what will become the new tried and true. 3. Invest in learning. Your employer may purchase opportunities for you, such as Lynda.com. Do not let that stop you from spending your own money as well. Sometimes resources are free; such as Lynda.com at some libraries are available to its members. I personally have a monthly subscription to KNPUniversity.com and have purchased several learning series from Wesbos.com. Can not recommend him enough, btw. 4. See what your peers are learning. Ask them why they are learning what they are learning, and revisit them to see if what they have learned stuck with them. If they have learned a new language, framework, or library, and gush over it, then maybe you should look into it, right? 5. Learn every day. Take time every work day to sharpen your tools. Half hour or so going over a how to video or coding something unique and fun will build into a great habit. If you can’t do it during work hours, which happens for everyone at sometime, then do it in your personal time. 6. Understand you are going to make mistakes. Learn from them. Go over old code and see how bad of a coder you really were, and embrace it. Then see how much farther you have yet to go. It is frightening, but know every one of your peers is on the same journey. It is not a race. Help those that are behind you, and let those ahead of you lend a hand. 7. Know your limitations. Back when I was a firefighter I had classmates who could read the material and ace the test. (This was really annoying in paramedic school!) For me it takes more than just reading the material. I have to do the work, watch videos, read the material, do some more work, watch more videos…and so on. 8. Learn how you learn best. Everyone is different. Find your own groove and own it. For me it is following along in a video, then going back and trying new things, seeing what breaks, and what doesn’t. Sometimes it locks into my memory, other times it is vaporous. 9. Make sure you come back to what you have learned. Reenforce it with actions, again and again. 10. Have fun! Build something you want to use, and share it with the world. Put an “I Made This” sticker on it. Push to github, share on twitter. Let the world know you are a maker. Whether it’s a table or a piece of code, you have fashioned something into existence that previously was only an idea.

bodyEverything was fine until the skunk arrived. It wasn’t, but when the dog got skunked, all the other problems seemed so small. We are selling our home, and in the process of living in a staged home our dog has been in the loving hands of my in laws. That’s where the attack happened. As sorry as I am for what they have gone through, an honest little part of me was “thank God it wasn’t at home.” Yes, there is shame in that admittance. This was a crash course in de-skunking for me, and hopefully a spot of help for you. If you can, do NOT let the dog back into the house. This will probably be impossible as it’ll get past you before you can smell it. But, if on the offhand chance you can detect the skunking before the dog is in, it will go a lot easier. And cheaper. Much, much cheaper. From now on we will assume your four legged friend, sprayed with that oil, has made it back into your home and has started to roll on the carpet, or jump on your bed. The first thing you will think is that you have a gas leak. You may even call the fire department only to have them tell you, “you have been skunked”. By now it is at least 20 minutes of dog trying to get the smell off of him and onto you. You now have a serious problem. This is where luck comes into play. It turns out that lovely skunk oil has a lifespan in the glands where newer, fresher oil is not as potent as oil that has been “fermenting” for weeks. Guess which one we got? So you’ve been skunked, and it’s in the house. It’s probably night, and you have a meeting first thing in the morning. If you take that dog to the vet they will most likely tell you to keep your dog outside, where you will wait, and your car will get skunked as well. Whatever you are wearing will get skunked. Whatever clothes are in your house will begin to pickup the smell. This is going to go from bad to worse. This is where paying attention comes into play. Remove clothing from your home you will wear in public the next day or two from the house. Suites, jacket, shirt…everything. Your office mates will thank you. Remove the filters from your furnace. These trap the stink oils. When cleaning, wear clothes you’ll probably wind up throwing away. Fresh air and air movement is your friend. Do NOT strive for 100% stink free perfection. Ain’t going to happen, so give up on that dream. There are a host of chemicals and cleaners, some home made, others very expensive. It is probably best to get the tools together before you need them, but seriously, who plans for a skunk? Details on cleaners, making your own and buying, can be found here: https://wildlife.unl.edu/pdfs/removing-skunk-odor.pdf We are two weeks into this adventure and it is still a battle. My best wish to is that I hope what I have learned will never come in handy for you.

bodyEasy access to guns is a huge problem...unfortunately we only have to look to Los Angles and Chicago to see the infiltration of guns into the inner city by the government. This is an issue that has been around since the 80's. Any digging on the matter and you will accounts of train cars filled with guns stopped in Compton, the doors open for all to take. Or Chicago where boxes of guns are left in alleys to be found by passer-bys. But these are conspiracy theories, so let's deal in facts. It is "easy" to build, from scratch, your own gun. Back in the day these were called zipguns. Now, with modern manufacturing, and I'm not even talking about 3d printing....just modern tools you can purchase cheaply at a Harbor Freight, you can build an AK-47 or an AR-15. Note I used the word "easy". There is skill involved, machining and such, but nothing a motived learning can't pickup. Machine shop in high school would be enough for most. I guess what I am getting at is that to solve the Killing Problem requires more than fixing the Gun Problem. Yes, we need to fix easy access, but more importantly, we need to fix the reason young men kill.

bodyI would love to see some of your suggested approach. Any step in the direction of reasonable, thoughtful gun control will be good. No one wants to take 'gun rights' away, but a tragedy consists of the person (mentally ill or otherwise), the access to mass-killing weapons (AR-15 or otherwise), opportunity (location/targets etc). You only need to take away one of the three to prevent the next tragedy. The person (mental health or other otherwise) is hard to determine and impossible to predict/prevent at any moment (even with medication/counselling/mentoring/help). That person can snap at any moment in time. Or that person is just plain evil and not mentally ill (we have some of those here, whether we like it or not). The opportunity (going to school) is unavoidable. They are KIDS!!! So, the most logical way to handle is the access to weapons. There is no reason for military-grade weapons whatsoever. Want a handgun/rifle for personal safety? yes, ok. Hunting rifles, yes, ok. I may not personally own one but I respect those who wish to own one. But why is a military-grade weapon? That leaves

bodyThis is a multi-pronged approach that, when taken in full view is quite daunting...and as such most shy away, hoping that if they ignore it, it'll go away. What they don't seem to see is that it is not going away. Let's look at the pattern: Sometimes there is medication involved. Sometimes there is a history of family problems. I say sometimes as they may have been a factor, or they may not. What is an absolute is that they are young men, mostly white. Young men have always been around guns. Boy Scouts, rifle ranges at schools...you could even order military hardware from the back of a magazine back in day. And yes, there were school killings back then as well. But not with frequency, and deadliness of today. We must ask some gun questions, but first we must ask on the one common pattern involved: What are WE doing to FAIL these young men? How are these young men learning that violence solves their personal issues? Where have they learned this? Why have we allowed them to learn this? Please note I called the pattern "young men, mostly white". This is not to say other races are immune, or do not share the same tragedies. But what does it say about us that we mourn the dead of one killing, and ignore the dead from another? Gun control will be addressed. There is a "blue wave" approaching American politics, and millennials are now the largest voting block...if they want something changed, they only need to organize. I have an idea which stems from what the Chicago police are doing. Here's my thought: A student reports to a school official their concern over a fellow student. The school directs a volunteer group of male adults to make contact with the young man, and access/intervene/be a role model. The volunteer group can then recommend to the school their findings, and authorities can make decisions on help and guidance. The idea is to surround the young man with positive, and successful role models. Not sure it would work, but would love to give it a try.

"body": "This is a multi-pronged approach that, when taken in full view is quite daunting...and as such most shy away, hoping that if they ignore it, it'll go away.\n\nWhat they don't seem to see is that it is not going away.\n\nLet's look at the pattern: Sometimes there is medication involved. Sometimes there is a history of family problems. I say sometimes as they may have been a factor, or they may not. What is an absolute is that they are young men, mostly white.\n\nYoung men have always been around guns. Boy Scouts, rifle ranges at schools...you could even order military hardware from the back of a magazine back in day. And yes, there were school killings back then as well. But not with frequency, and deadliness of today. \n\nWe must ask some gun questions, but first we must ask on the one common pattern involved:\nWhat are WE doing to FAIL these young men? How are these young men learning that violence solves their personal issues? Where have they learned this? Why have we allowed them to learn this?\n\nPlease note I called the pattern \"young men, mostly white\". This is not to say other races are immune, or do not share the same tragedies. But what does it say about us that we mourn the dead of one killing, and ignore the dead from another?\n\nGun control will be addressed. There is a \"blue wave\" approaching American politics, and millennials are now the largest voting block...if they want something changed, they only need to organize. \n\nI have an idea which stems from what the Chicago police are doing. \n\nHere's my thought: A student reports to a school official their concern over a fellow student. The school directs a volunteer group of male adults to make contact with the young man, and access/intervene/be a role model. The volunteer group can then recommend to the school their findings, and authorities can make decisions on help and guidance.\n\nThe idea is to surround the young man with positive, and successful role models.\n\nNot sure it would work, but would love to give it a try.",

bodyOf course BTC will recover. It always has, even from bigger percentage losses than recent. Yes, countries are looking at regulations, or even threatening an outright ban, but that's ok. It only means they see the decentralized nature of the currency as threat, which they shouldn't, but you can not hold it against for seeing it as such. Cryptocurrencies are a volatile market because of this. Believe in the technology. Faith will carry you through the darkness.

bodyThe process of putting yourself into a lucid dream state takes practice, but once achievable it is fairly easy to put yourself back in. The key is consistency. Every night, when going to sleep, ensure there is no radio or tv, and have not been on your phone for at least 30 minutes prior. One the best tasks when preparing for rest is to write down your to do list for the next day. This will help alleviate anxiety and stress. Also, note that I said "write", as in paper and pen. Your phone should be silent, the screen off. Now that you have gotten ready for bed, ensure the room is as dark as you can get it and lay flat on your back in bed, your arms and legs should not be touching yourself. Close your eyes and start counting back from 10, slowly. Each number you should imagine a weightlessness moving in from your feet and hands, up your arms and legs. Concentrate on breathing deep, and counting slowly, and feeling the sensation as it moves towards your core. Once you reach 1 start a mantra stating you will be know when you are dreaming. Now, drift off to sleep. No, it will not work the first night. Nor the second, or third. But once it starts happening it will become easier. This was learned from an Omni magazine article on lucid dreaming I read while in high school. I tried it, and it worked. In truth, lucid dreaming is somewhat boring after awhile. It's like winning every game at a casino, every time. It gets old. What is important is that you will find yourself a better, and faster sleeper. Good luck!
