      "body": "Someone called me a \"keyboard warrior\" this week. I've also been called an \"armchair activist\" before. I'd like to own these terms with pride today and I'll explain why.\n\nI have diagnoses of Complex PTSD and MDD, aka Major Depressive Disorder, among others. It means I am a spoonie (if you don't know what a spoonie is, I highly recommend googling The Spoon Theory or checking out the links below). It means I have low energy most days and feel like passively sleeping myself to death other days. This doesn't mean I am worth less. It just means I have less time and energy at my disposal; at least I have laser-like focus in the rare moments when my stars do align. At least I have overflowing content to write about and too little time rather than the opposite problem. At least I have empathy and know what it's like be lacking, which is more than can be said for a lot of people.\n\nBut being a spoonie means I have to conserve my energy and plan ahead for every little thing such as brushing your teeth or making a phone call. This also includes Facebook arguments. They are ridiculous, mostly pointless, and time-consuming, but a fun distraction for me. I've met some of the most incredible and intelligent people that I know through Facebook arguments, so that alone has made it worthwhile for me. On top of my diagnoses, I am also an introvert who gathers energy when alone and spends it when out among other people. I can never say what I mean when it is coming out of my mouth, but I can sometimes when it comes from my fingertips. It is unfortunate, but being on the internet is my \"being out in public\" and my socializing, since socializing in person takes an immense toll on me. I also need much more time to recover and process everything that happens after socializing, as CPTSD has slowed down my processing speed.\n\nI used to go to protests, but being out in public when it is not absolutely necessary (i.e. not running an errand, going to a dr appt or meeting) has gradually become a luxury for me. It doesn't mean this is the life I wished for or want. It is not. I requested an active life, and I envy the vanlifers, the cross-country skiers, the runners and the singers and dancers and actors. These are all things I can't do at the moment. I live all of the lives I want and more, in books and ideas and stories and writing and films and television, but I can't live it in my reality.\n\nMy dream is there though. My spirit is building homes for children in displaced areas, running marathons to raise funds for everything I stand for. My mind is out there parading and marching and picketing and striking and rioting and protesting, getting arrested and tear-gassed. My wallet is out there donating all the money I don't have right now but will make in the future. I'm not lazy or hiding. I'm not unwilling. I'm not in denial. I'm sick, and I'm accepting that sick is what I am from now on because there's no cure for the disorders that I have. I am learning to manage them though, and that is the only steady upward trend.\n\nIf we look at Wiktionary's definition of \"keyboard warrior\" - which I am mentioning only because it says something I want to discuss, not because dictionary definitions are the end all be all (they're not); dictionaries are for reference only, because just like history books they were written by the people in power. So what does Wiktionary say? \"Noun. keyboard warrior (informal, derogatory) A person who behaves aggressively and/or in an inflammatory manner in online text-based discussion media, but at the same time does not behave similarly in real life, potentially due to cowardice, introversion or shyness.\" I hope they can change the ending of that ableist sentence as cowardice is most definitely NOT the same as introversion or shyness (social anxiety disorder being a real problem for many). And as a shy introvert, I have no problem getting in your face in real life when you provoke the beast.\n\nAs for \"armchair activist\", Wikipedia explains: \"Armchair revolutionary is a two-word cliche which, along with the similar terms armchair activist and armchair socialist, is a description of a speaker or writer who professes radical aims without taking any action to realize them (\"from the comfort of the armchair\").\" I venture to call this definition ableist. What is action? Is debating about it an action? Teaching, learning, writing, shouting, yelling are those actions? Is TYPING WHILE SITTING not an action? To paraphrase Johanna Hedva in her essay \"Sick Woman Theory\" (link below, highly recommended), everything is political. Whether you have access to a clean shower or not. Whether your anti-depressant is covered on Medi-Cal or not. Whether you have a bed to lie in or whether said bed is being repossessed due to alcoholism from childhood abuse. All political. So the question remains:\n\n\"How do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can’t get out of bed?\" - Johanna Hedva, Sick Woman Theory\n\nI use what's available to me. I'm scrappy and resourceful or I wouldn't still be here. If what I've got is an armchair and a keyboard, I'm going to use it. So I'm a keyboard warrior. I'm an armchair activist. You say it like it's a bad thing. I'm not the kind that you think you mean if what you mean is hypocrite - but then, aren't we all hypocrites to a degree, unless we can mold the world to what we wish?\n\nThe internet is my public. So I guess here I am, protesting out in public.       "body": "I work in the film industry. Today I ran across a blog post from my favorite Production Assistant blog, The Anonymous Production Assistant. We are hiring writer's room interns at the place I work at, and this is perfect as a guide for our interns as well.  If you are interested in working in the film industry, or maybe you already are, then this post is for you:\n\n6 Essential Traits Of A Production Assistant\n\nIf you’ve read this blog for very long, you’ve probably realized that being a production assistant is not for everyone. Anyone can be hired, but in order to continue working in the industry you need to have a certain type of personality.\n\nThere are several traits that will strongly improve people’s perception of you, as well as your own emotional strength. Incorporating these attributes will help the PA phase of your career go much more smoothly, while simultaneously improving your general quality of life.\n\nSo, in no particular order, here are the 6 traits that I think are the most critical to the success of production assistants. (Alright, they’re kind of critical to success in life in general, but I’m going to be talking about how they apply to the film industry.)\n\n1. Confidence\nFor the most part, I think this is the most common positive trait I see in the industry. Starting out as a totally green production assistant on a big set is quite intimidating, and is a barrier of entry that keeps out those without a certain sense of confidence.\n\nNevertheless, some people sneak through, and could use a reminder on the importance of confidence.\n\nAs a PA, you’ll frequently be asked to do things you’ve never done before. You won’t always be completely comfortable handling a responsibility, but you have to do it – quickly. PAs who walk around in a daze and hesitate before every new task get smacked down by the AD’s hard. Great PA’s have the confidence to try new things, and take responsibility if they mess up.\n\nPlus, by being confident and secure in yourself and your choices, you’ll be able to handle inevitable criticism much better anyways.\n\n2. Optimism\nHere’s one that, in my experience, a lot of film crew members are lacking. Sometimes when you’re working in the industry, things can start to get pretty bleak. Working insane hours in uncomfortable conditions can lead many people down a path of cynicism and pessimism.\n\nPeople begin to become jaded, and complain about their life and how awful everyone around them is. While these sentiments may be grounded in some truth, everyone has a choice in what perspective to view things from. When you’re a 3 A.M call time, you can throw a tantrum about how early you need to get up, or be grateful that the day (might) end with the sun still up!\n\nThe reason why negativity is so pervasive in the film industry, is because emotions are highly contagious. By having an optimistic attitude, and always looking for the bright side, you can spread positivity to everyone around you. They’ll remember it. At least subconsciously.\n\n3. Patience\nDays on a film set typically range between 12-16 hours, and although there’s not a lot of downtime for PAs, your patience is definitely going to be tested at one point or another.\n\nA shot may take 5 hours to complete instead of the scheduled 2. You may be told you’ll be leaving early, and then end up leaving 4 hours late. Sometimes you might end up having to sit in a lockup where nothing is going on for a full 14 hour day. It happens.\n\nWhen you’re working 60-80 hours every week, time starts to blend into an abstract alternate reality, and if you don’t have a great deal of patience, you will lose your mind.\n\n4. Humility\nIn my opinion, this is the most important trait you can have as a production assistant. PA’s who are unable to leave their ego’s at the door never last very long in the industry. In an environment where many have huge inflated egos, being a humble, hardworking individual who is just there to get the job done, goes a long way. Here’s a few examples of applications of this trait, off the top of my head.\n\nNever defending yourself when faced with criticism. Yes, sometimes certain individuals are just going to be a jerk no matter what, but 99% of the time, if something went wrong, there’s something you could have done differently. Whether they’re wrong or not, you should be capable of saying “Copy that” without getting butthurt.\n\nNever complain about fairness. Life is unfair, and life on a film set is often extremely unfair. However, complaining about this does nothing but make you look bad. Take a deep breath and realize that the scales will tip in your favor at some point, and you definitely wont be complaining then.\n\nDon’t boast about your accomplishments, or think that your larger resume makes you any better than anyone else. At the end of the day, producer or PA, we’re all people, and everyone deserves respect. Everyone had to “scrub the toilet” at one point, so don’t act like you’re too good to do it.\n\n5. Forgiveness\nYou’re going to get yelled at as a PA. Even if you do everything absolutely perfectly every single day, one day, you’re gonna get chewed out. If you don’t know how to forgive people, then you’ll find yourself surrounded by enemies very quickly.\n\nMaybe it’s an above the line crew-member you accidentally stood in front of at the wrong time. Perhaps you asked a fellow PA for a favor when they are already on the verge of snapping at someone. In such a high stress environment, it’s bound to happen eventually. One day it’s likely you might find yourself in an argument, and that’s when forgiveness is most important.\n\nPAs who hold grudges do not last long in this business. It’s important to have standards for how you are going to let people treat you, but it’s equally important to be able to forgive those who lash out at you.\n\n6. Respectfulness\nFinally, the best way to avoid having to exercise your forgiveness, is by practicing respectfulness. That doesn’t just apply to the people above you in the hierarchy, but to everyone. Yes, even your fellow PAs, and even the background actors.\n\nObviously, this is important because if you are anything but 100 percent perfectly respectful to some producers or actors, you might end up getting fired on the spot. But that goes without saying. Everyone is respectful to those people; they have to be.\n\nSet yourself apart by treating everyone with respect. Yes, I feel silly having to put this in writing, but it is astounding how many people in the film industry really just do not understand this. Be respectful. People might not notice if you are, but they will definitely notice if you’re not.\n\nIn Conclusion…\nWhenever I have to work with different PA’s for the first time, these traits definitely stand out to me and make me want to work with them again. Incorporating these into your lifestyle will cause people to love you, and that’s incredibly important in an industry which is based off of personal connections.",

They could just as easily be called sex motels or lust motels, or sleep motels or hide-and-rest motels.\n\nRecently, I had a bad birthday meal with my parents on a bad summer trip back to Taiwan. The meal culminated in tears and shouting, which led to me storming out of the house with my backpack. I stopped at the first hotel I saw, because it's just way too hot to be storming down the street with air that thick.\n\nThe closest hotel was two blocks away, with multi-colored neon lights spelling out \"DI BAO\", loosely translated as 'emperor's castle' or 'god's treasure' depending on the characters. Either way it was something grand. I needed to pee and I needed AC.\n\nIt was August 2nd , my birthday, but I'd been unsuccessful at keeping my big mouth shut and had gotten into a fight with my mother. This summer I had been home for a month, working and staying with my parents in Taipei. I should get a medal, but this is what they call a \"quiet accomplishment.\" It's like taking the perfect dump but having nobody to tell and you can't really take a picture because that's just weird.\n\nFights never come at a convenient time. They pick the most disruptive times to occur, usually when you need to go to the bathroom or maybe you got really hungry and made a grilled cheese sandwich and was just about to take a bite. My advice is, don't have a screaming match with your mother on a full bladder. And don't throw away newspapers, even if they are not just month-old but years-old. My mother is a hoarder, and has passed the gene on to me. But even I drew the line at year-old newspapers. My father tolerates this madness, shrugging: \"she thinks she'll find time to read them later.\" The newspaper stacks sat next to the television in two-feet-high piles that resembled reception bars on a cell phone. This made our white leather couch look overdressed.\n\nThis is also the same reasoning that led to us having the same Christmas tree in the living room for the past decade. I can't even remember when we put it up, but it has never been taken down. It just sits through all the seasons, living each day to the fullest as much as a plastic tree can do. I heard that we once had a real tree, in the beginning, but it was too hard to clean up after, what with all the needly leaves dropping everywhere.\n\n\"When did you become so fat? Your shirt is too low!\" I had travelled thousands of miles to see them, but my mother always greeted me with a frown. \"What happened to your skin? Why is it all red?\" Once when I mentioned suicidal thoughts, my mother responded with, \"Why don't you think about your degrees?\" But tonight, even with our differences, the fight was like a tired play. We've done it too many times. I just wanted to yell and prove a point, which was that she didn't own me, arguably.\n\n\"You can rest but we can't allow a single girl to stay overnight.\" The young man said somewhat apologetically. I looked at the row of rooms behind him, each one with a private garage. A couple could stay overnight for sex purposes, no problem, but not a girl by herself. If I was a prostitute, I would be the worst one in the world. I was wearing an old t-shirt and shorts, my back soaked with sweat. Even my ponytail was sweaty. I paid for a \"rest\" period, which was 30 bucks for 3 hours, and then a garage door lifted, like in a game show. Except this door led to a room made for sex.\n\nThe walls had pink accents, gold trimmings, and more neon light, but the bathroom had no wall. The bedside panel contained a row of sound effect buttons that created ambient noise for different surroundings: office, train station, subway, airport, street, karaoke. This was especially useful if you were committing adultery, which was 80% of the clientele, namely people who cannot mess around at home. If your wife happened to call, she would never notice the difference between canned subway sounds playing in a bedroom and the real subway.\n\nI sat on the Hello Kitty bedspread and emptied out my bag. I had brought a copy of East of Eden and a bunch of papers I was working on, but I hadn't brought any clothes so taking a bath was out of the question. There wasn't much else you could do here that wasn't sex, besides watch porn and use the unwalled bathroom.\n\nI decided to text message my friend Ben. I had put off returning his call because it seemed like he might be asking me out and I didn't know him well enough to know if I wanted to go on a date with him yet. This was tricky, trying to spend more time with someone to see if they are someone you want to spend more time with.\n\nEither way, I made sure Ben knew that just because I was inviting him to a love motel didn't mean that he should expect sex. It wasn't my vanity, it was the conclusion I'd drawn after years of dating men: if he's a guy and you're a girl, he wants sex. In fact, I texted, it would be ideal if he pretended we were not in a love motel. I was terrified of awkwardness but wanted company. I always felt chatty after a fight, ready to vent my side of the story with an audience that agreed.\n\nThe Di Bao love motel had an impressive room service menu. You could get anything from duck tongue to stinky tofu. There was even a light that notified you when your food was ready. They bring it to your door and press the notification light. It was brilliant. I looked at the time. The real reason I wanted Ben to come over was that I didn't want to be alone on\nmy birthday. The realization hit me that I was turning 29 and running away from home. After fighting with my mother, no less. The thought depressed me until I remembered that before I left, I had viciously dunked her toothbrush in the toilet.\n\nHer side of the story:\nI tried to raise her right, to be respectful of her elders. She's just too sensitive, ungrateful wench. Tons of clothes with the labels still on them in her closet, never worn, so wasteful. And still she tells us how she doesn't have money to eat. I told her to get Burger King! But she should really watch her weight. Aiya, I can't believe she threw away perfectly good newspapers, I was going to read them on my days off. Or when I retire.
