Sorry, I'll take care of that right away.\"  \n\nJax learned not to make excuses.  He didn't bother to explain that he had just arrived.  She didn't bother to notice that his jacket was still on and he had the list in his hand.  He watched as her wide hips brush against the fountain drink spicket leaving an oval elongated stain on her polyester pants.  It would have been funny, but he wondered for a second if somehow that would wind up being his fault, too.\n\nJax made it a priority to get the mop from the storage room and hurried to clean the floor up before she returned from the office.  He didn't bother to take his jean coat off even though he was sweating, hurrying around the small store.  After an hour or so she came back to the front.  He was sure she didn't remember the incident and wouldn't  thank him for her shiny entrance way.  He even rearranged the plug on the machine so it  could rest flush against the wall giving her another two inches between her and another splotched pant leg.  \n\nA regular came in and asked him to choose a lottery ticket.  The hard black fingernail revealed the scratch off was a fifty-thousand dollar winner.  \"Holy mother!\"  The crinkly eyes flashed up at him.\n\n\"Wow, dude!  Congratulations!\"\n\n\"Young man, You're getting five thousand dollars of this!\"\n\nJax could hardly believe his ears and partly he doubted when it actually came down to it, whether or not the patron would return to the store to reward him when he  received the payoff.  The man filled out the form and was on his cell calling his brother to share the news.\n\nJax reloaded the cartons of cigarettes behind him.  He finally sat down on the upside down crate and let his throbbing thighs relax.  Directly at eye level he noticed the cherry soda slowly dripping.  He knew he had to take the whole thing apart like he did last week.  It was going to the  whole afternoon.  Jax could still hear the muffled voice on the sidewalk.  For a moment he allowed himself to think of the five thousand dollar bounty and how that could carry him through the rest of the year.  He maybe could even look for another job and finally be free of the troll in the back.  Jax stepped quickly to his feet and moved the fountain drink machine back into the aisle.  Either way, he figured, he wouldn't care if the old witch ruined her stretch pants and that was on her.",

Her feet danced all the way around the corner of the pond. \"Help!  Help Grampa!\"\n\nFred stood up from the Adirondack chair and lurched forward.  \"Holy cow!\"  He shouted, \"Hang on, I'm coming.\"   He ran toward her grinning from ear to ear.  \"You got a monster on the line.\"\n\nJust then, with both hands she threw the pole, lock stock and barrel, right into the water.  \"Help!  There's a monster in the water!\"  She was paralyzed.\n\nGrampa reached her just in time to save her and the reel and rod from danger.  He threw her on his hip and stepped in to the water's edge.   In only a moment Esther's courage return and she took the fishing pole back.  She decided she wanted to see the creature face to face, as long as Grampa stayed right next to her.  Her tiny knuckles turned white against the cork.  Her arms ached.  She bit her lower lip and pulled as hard as she could.  Grampa's countless hours of instruction worked flawlessly.  She turned the crank and drew up the slack, then pulled hard once more until the bullhead appeared only ten feet from them.  \n\nGrampa knew not to take the pole from her.  She was nearly there.  This is where fishing turns to a life long passion, he held his breath and watched her struggle against the bottom feeder.  Esther was doing it, in only seconds the fish would be in the net.  \n\nEsther didn't look up.  She kept a singular focus on the circles spiraling closer and closer.  Shesaw grampa reaching the aluminum pole, straining to reach and net the thrashing fish.  She gave it a final tug and brought him straight into the net.  Fred was ready and scooped it up bringing it to shore.  Esther fell backwards when he put it near her chest.  It was ugly, but not nearly the beast she thought it might be.  \n\nGrampa was beaming.  \"Lets get a picture.  The pair made their way down the path shouting to Grama who was already coming down the steps.  Esther told her all about it and could hardly hold still while she snapped a picture.\n \nEsther leaned in close and said in a growl, \"Grama, I got me my very own best monster.  I caught him and he's mine forever.\"\n\n\"What on earth are you going to do with him?\"  Gram's forehead wrinkled.\n\n\"I'm gonna keep him in the pond.  He'll be my friend forever, but now I'm the boss of him.\"\n\nGrampa and Esther went back down the path.  Grama watched her soft tresses bounce behind her.",

That was indeed Jacob's instance, but it doesn't mean all boys develop that way. He, in particular, was very dependent on his mum. And his mum was also very dependent on him. In emotional terms. \n\nBut, what's a mother to do? Offering a secure-base to their children is a good start. Which means give their children freedom to go out in the world to explore, to learn through mistakes while letting them know they have a safe base to return to for guidance and reassurance. See, this is what Jacob didn't have.
