The woman, Elaine Herzberg, died of her injuries in what is thought to be the first pedestrian fatality caused by a self-driving vehicle on a public road, the New York Times reported.\n\nLocal authorities and Uber are investigating the accident, which has already begun drawing public attention to the risks and benefits of self-driving cars. The accident may result in safer autonomous cars regulated by more stringent oversight. Still, many researchers believe that more self-driving cars will ultimately be safer than their human counterparts — and they may be right. [Self-Driving Cars: 5 Problems That Need to Be Addressed]\n\n\"More than 90 percent of car crashes in the U.S. are thought to involve some form of driver error,\" Peter Hancock, a professor of psychology and civil engineering at the University of Central Florida, wrote in The Conversation. \"Eliminating this error would, in two years, save as many people as the country lost in all of the Vietnam War.\" (In other words, about 58,000 people).\n\nRoad traffic is the 5th leading cause of death in the world, and the United States is one of the deadliest high-income nations when it comes to highway safety. According to a report recently released by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 37,461 people died in traffic accidents in 2016. About 5,987 of those deaths were pedestrian fatalities — roughly 16 every day. Compared to 2015, pedestrian fatalities increased by 9 percent, resulting in the highest pedestrian death toll since 1990.\n\nThis upward trend in pedestrian deaths is, sadly, not new; pedestrian fatalities have climbed steadily in 6 out of the 7 years between 2009 and 2016, resulting in nearly 2,000 more deaths per year in 2016 than in 2009, according to the Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA), a nonprofit implemented to address behavioral safety issues among drivers. Many factors likely contribute to this unsettling trend, the GHSA wrote, including economic conditions, fuel prices, an increase in the total number of vehicle miles traveled nationwide and the challenge of rapidly increasing smartphone use distracting both drivers and pedestrians.\n\nEven in crashes that involve self-driving vehicles, unpredictable or distracted human behavior may often be at fault. A 2015 study by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute found that, per millions of miles traveled, autonomous cars had a higher crash rate than human-piloted cars — however, no self-driving cars had been found at fault for the crashes they were involved in. A decade later, you might even be able to ride in one.\nNASA and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. are working together to build an experimental plane (or \"X-plane\") called the Low-Boom Flight Demonstration (LBFD), which will reduce the sonic boom synonymous with high-speed flight to \"a gentle thump,\" NASA representatives said at a news conference today (April 3).\nThe agency has awarded Lockheed Martin a $247.5 million contract to construct a working version of the sleek, single-pilot plane by summer 2021 and should begin testing over the following years to determine whether the design could eventually be adapted to commercial aircraft.\n\"I believe today is a new beginning for NASA aeronautics,\" Jaiwon Shin, associate administrator of NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, said at the news conference. \"Our long tradition of solving the technical barriers of supersonic flight to benefit everyone continues.\"\nThe X-plane will be about the length of an NBA basketball court, will fit a single pilot and will fly at about 940 mph (1,510 km/h) at an altitude of 55,000 feet (16,800 meters). If all goes according to plan, spectators on the ground should barely be able to hear the plane as it rips through the sound barrier high overhead. (The speed of sound, also known as Mach 1, varies depending on air pressure and temperature but is roughly measured at about 758 mph or 1,220 km/h.)\nNASA has been designing the plane for several years and studying sonic booms since the 1940s. The trick to evading those thunderous, midair roars is in the LBFD's sleek design, NASA said.\nSonic booms occur Because air reacts to a speeding plane much like water reacts to a boat: The plane pushes air molecules aside as it passes, compressing them together into waves. If the plane is traveling at supersonic speeds, the resulting shock waves spread out in every direction at the speed of sound — creating a continuous, thunderous boom audible for miles around. The bigger the aircraft, the more air is displaced, and the louder the boom.\nThe LBFD's sleek shape will scatter those shock waves in a way that prevents them from converging into such ear-shattering blasts, NASA officials said. The design has already been tested in computer simulations and wind-tunnel experiments, but it will soon get its first exposure in the open air.\nSupersonic flight has been banned on overland commercial flights since 1973. The magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck about 38 miles (61 kilometers) off the coast of California on April 5\n\"That was the first earthquake I've felt since I got access to the @EarlyWarningLab beta app,\" tweeted Alissa Walker, an editor at the real estate blog Curbed. \"I had 34 seconds warning — enough time to drop, cover, and hold on, which I would have done if I knew shaking was going to be strong.\nThe app works thanks to a network of seismic sensors that detect P-waves — the first energy that radiates from an earthquake, according to Early Warning Labs, a Santa Monica-based company that works with the USGS on early warning systems. The seismic sensors also detect the location and the magnitude of the earthquake.\nOnce the longitudinal P-waves (short for pressure waves) are detected, the app sends a warning before the more powerful S-wave, or shear wave, arrives, which usually causes the most damage. Warnings are also sent to local and state public emergency response officials, infrastructure (such as to gas lines, subway systems and power plants) and to private businesses and the public, Early Warning Labs said.\nEarly warning systems for earthquakes have already been implemented in other countries, including Japan, Taiwan and Mexico. In fact, people in Mexico got up to a 60 second warning in the magnitude-8.1 earthquake that hit Sept. 8, 2017, Curbed Los Angeles reported.\nEven if it's just a few seconds, the warning can give people time to duck, cover and hold before the earthquake hits. It can also warn people operating vehicles or heavy equipment to slow and stop, especially if they're about to drive onto an overpass, tunnel or bridge.\nIn addition, the warning can give emergency workers, including firefighters, enough time to open their station doors.
