| body | It's been a couple months and I though now would be a good time to do a little catch-up with what I'm doing and what has happened since my first post about mining and trading. First off I'd like to say...wow what a past few weeks! The market fluctuations have taken me past my $1000 benchmark (that I had hoped for in 6 months, not 3 1/2) and back down to around $700, but that's my fault (will expand later in this post). Seeing Bitcoin skyrocket to nearly double what analysts forecasted for its spring value (est $10,000.00 USD) was a bit alarming and reassuring at the same time. It is steadily increasing in value and, even after a rally and a reset, it is still on the move upward. My gut says it will only see below $12k on a quick dip/reset and will back in the neighborhood of $20k within a few months. Long term? I won't venture to guess as I'm a reformed day-trading crypto hopper, but I feel like any entry at any price right now (and no one can deny that its current price of $13-14k is a good entry point) is a good move of the long run. Some recent articles suggest that BTC will reach astronomical levels ($60-80k+) in the new year, but I would expect more modest results with a few heavy pull-backs throughout the year. Being tapped into the crypto-world has disconnected me from the mainstreams perception and acceptance of it, but I was recently reminded by a friend how it is gaining household popularity. Contrary to the "big boys" of finance still giving their public "nay" (while, I'm convinced, they are investing and trading cryptos behind their backs) the world is warming up to the concept and the market is definitely seeing an influx from legitimate interest if nothing else. Just last night I was trying to help a friend set up an account on bittrex.com and we were surprised to learn that they were not accepting new accounts at that time. Wait, what!?!? Am I playing on a platform that can't handle it's expansion? Calm down, calm down...this is a good sign. Growing pains due to rapid expansion is always a good sign of a market. If there are so many people trying to get into investing in Cryptocurrencies I'm OK with that. Coinbase, one of the other large platforms, is known for its instability due to operating-near-capacity issue. I'm ok with the one I've chosen not taking on new members so that the vested members can still play without (major) interruption. I will say I do notice the socket connection lagging a bit more recently, but I can deal with it. Ethereum following the Bit-curve is very nice to see for me, being an ETH miner, but to all ETH investors the same. Going from a projected monthly mining income of $90-110 to $210-240 has been a pretty, well, sweet deal. The increase in difficulty has been more than offset by the increase in value, so, I will keep mining it. I see it being a long while before ETH is no longer profitable to mine. Just a quick recap of my rig- I am using 3 - RX480 8GB cards that I modded the bios and am running tweaked drivers with Afterburner to regulate the fan speeds and clocks. I installed Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II coolers on them to keep them cool and efficient, but they took a good bit of customizing with the Dremel so be forewarned if you so choose to maximize your cooling power with these awesome air cooling systems. All said, I'm averaging 82Mh/s at an easy 510 Watts of juice. Had I left all of the ETH I mined in my wallet for safe keeping I would be in a much better position if value were everything, but I did set into this with trading in mind and all good education comes at a cost. Where to start... candlesticks. I was first introduced to candlestick charts when learning investing in stocks years ago. After I spent months perfecting my eye with the art-of-the-stick I realized something... it didn't work with what I was investing in. The only corner of the market that it did work in was something I toyed with for a total of about a week, on and off... day trading penny stocks. If you're the type to go to Vegas and put all of your money on black you should try it sometime. Needless to say I was a little disheartened to make the realization that all of the effort put into it would mean nothing with how I wanted to invest in the stock market. HOWEVER... I was pleased to learn that, for the most part, it does work with cryptocurrencies. Yes, I'm saying it... investing in cryptocurrencies is much akin to day trading penny stocks. Am I saying they are the same thing? Absolutely not. Do they function, for the most part, the same? Why yes they do. Let us force ourselves out of this cryptobubble and take an outsiders stance, what are these things REALLY? Yes, blockchain is a thing and the names and logos they bare make it easy for us to distinguish one from another, but, comparing to the stock market, are these companies that hold actual value given by metrics that gauge all companies on and off the exchange? Hmmm.... well maybe lets look at the penny stock realm a little closer. Does anyone that day trades penny stocks actually care what the company does, its history and what its pipeline/projections look like? Nope. They are in it for the "wam bam thank-you-aaaand there's the next" experience; the quick flip. Many huge, quick flips that amount to money and that, in essence, is the name of the game. But is that all there is to cryptocurrencies? Lets view from the macro for a moment. Value is often equated to a measure of money. In order to exchange it fairly it has to be. Different metrics can be used to come to it's supposed "value" but it is a conceived thing. We can view any country's currency the same way. Most are paper and non-precious metals that are given a value by a regulatory agency. There is a common understanding as to what each denomination should be able to fetch from the market, given the objects purpose and quality. Supply and demand will drive the value up and down- supply dries up for a necessity and its demand will increase with it's value in tail. If an item is found in surplus the market will make distinctions as to what it is worth and, being the buyers market, the value will tend to decrease. Without this system it is pure speculation and emotion that drives the perceived value of any given object. And that lack of a backbone is what I see with the crypto-market. By no means do I mean that it is something to only be day traded, because I see the value of the crypto market being a very real, longstanding thing, there just isn't any data to compare it to because it is still a unique concept in its infancy. That said I feel that long positions are not a bad idea for those with extra pocket change that are interested in making more than a savings account or accepted investing practices would yield, if they look at the money put in as already gone. For those risk seekers I say learn charting. It is the best way (and only way that I know of) to take something that has no calculated value and project its worth. Until there is more of a driving media presence that skews the emotional state that is cryptocurrency it is the way to do it. How much have I lost in order to gain this experience? Honestly, a whopping $192.36 in electricity. Considering the fact that, given my learning and emotion-breaking hurdles, my portfolio currently sits at... I'm not feeling too bad about the mistakes I've made, the biggest reminders within the past couple days. One mistake that I made (like most that I actually make) was not going with my gut. My gut told me to not reinvest the BTC from the nights sales on Christmas morning. I thought about it and the charts were calling for a correction. In haste I decided to just keep feeding the machine and double my usual amount into two positions that general trending (light, broad and general chart analysis) made seem like a logical choice. Not so much. That one bad choice with two bad positions cost me roughly 32% in 3 days. How will I void this in the future? I WILL NOT make any moves without having the time to sit and actually decide the best course of action. Simply repeating on habit is not a sound strategy- calculate every move or it will cost you. I found that creating my own hybrid-approach and automating my moves with sell limit triggers is the most consistent way to keep it growing. Finding a reasonable margin is what you need to work on. They are going to be different with each coin you move into, so learning charting is invaluable when learning what a realistic and probable spike will look like. In the beginning I set unrealistic benchmarks that cost me many 10-20% spikes that would have added up to much more than the gross spike that triggered the sale. But, again, different coins will have different personalities and learning what is what will help in predicting if it is a triggerable coin, one to hold onto or one to try one of my methods on. Understand that it's personality can change in an instant and its personality can flip in an instant. Case an point - I found the HempCoin THC a couple months ago and started studying it. It would plateau around .00000200BTC and spike anywhere from 20-60% consistently. That worked for a while, until Dec 1 2017 to be exact. I happened to check my account and noticed it was gone and a nice little chunk of bitcoin was waiting for me to reinvest it. I saw what I would consider an anomaly (to my system, of course) and thought to myself "nah, I'll wait this one out. It's inflating and when it pops I'll hop back on its horse." Well, folks, I'm still waiting for that horse to come back to the ranch because after it steadily trotted around .00000700BTC for 3 weeks it shot up to almost .00004000BTC and has been hanging shakily between .00002500-.00003000BTC. There was no way to predict that change in personality, but it taught me to modify an old stock investing strategy and implement it, in reverse, to help ride that horse out of town, so to speak. Trigger Tip: When setting your trigger don't set one, set 2. When moving into positions in stocks it is a good practice to make 3 moves into it, over time. I'm hijacking that song of 3 moves and playing it in reverse to help avoid missing out on a huge gain. Had I cut my moves into thirds I would still have 1/3 of my original position that would equate to 4090% of my original move. How I am applying this in current moves is as follows- I find coin "X" and glance at it's chart. Its history has proven to have the qualities that I look for in a good short term prospect. Once I find the value that I project it to hit in a spike (in 5 days or less) I set 1/3 of the total to that at a limit sell. For the next third I double that first target and set it for limit sell. The last third I leave open without a limit sell trigger set. (Side note- safe practice is to set this chunk and all long positions in a wallet. We like to think that our passwords keep our trading accounts safe, but if you don't plan on trading it, put it away. You can always send it back to your trading account if you want to flip it.) Had I used this method I would have put in the .01BTC, cashed out .00816BTC and now held .1363BTC worth of THC today. Now this is not something you should expect to have repeat itself often, but when it happens you'll be glad you tried it. It's also a nice way to build many micro-positions across the board and stabilize your portfolio overall. | body | With the fall comes many outdoor activities. Some are fun like going to harvest festivals and picking pumpkins and some not so much...like raking leaves. Out come the hoodies, thermals and flannels to keep us warm while enjoying the fall outdoors, but what really keeps this man (and little man) warm in the cooler weather is smoked meat. Here in Maryland the Pit-style BBQ is a staple and many love the idea of making their own pit beef, brisket or ham, but for one reason or another many just "never get around to it." I'm here to tell you that even if you are working with an urban postage stamp back yard you can be a master of meat smoking and be revered as the neighborhood grill master. Just don't tell the neighbors how its very different from BBQ- they won't care when they can smell the smoker (and its tricks and tips are supposed to be guarded knowledge). Being the frugal guy I am I try to find the most cost effective means for any interest I have. There are many high quality and large scale smokers that can be purchased, but today I'm going to share my diamond-in-the-rough find- The Masterbuilt Bullet Smoker. I purchased this bad boy at the local orange big-box hardware store for [$29](http://www.homedepot.com/p/Masterbuilt-Charcoal-Bullet-Smoker-20060116/206288137) and have to say that its been one of my favorite for the home outdoor purchases thus far (second being the fire pit). When I find a deal like this I'm a sceptic, but do some research to see what I'm buying, what I need to fix and if I have the means to make it correct. After much reading it seemed that the two main alterations people needed to make were replacing the thermometer and drilling holes in the coal pan for ventilation... I can handle that, but only if needed. So starts my journey with the new smoker.... **Seasoning the Smoker** *What? You don't just bolt it together, fire the coals up, throw some wood chips in there and start smoking racks of ribs?* NO. Well, unless you like the taste of burnt plastic and motor oil on your food, then have at it. But most of us would enjoy the ribs better without, especially after spending hours basting, waiting and checking. No matter what smoker you purchase this is a step that you don't want to skip. The basics here apply to all smokers, but details will be very helpful if you decide to go with this great entry model. The seasoning process takes roughly 4 hours after construction is complete, so unless you start early in the morning don't plan on smoking until the next day. What you'll need- [x] Tools for building your smoker - This bullet smoker only requires a #2 phillips screwdriver and a good grip [x] Long burning, NON-Matchlight briquettes (I'll go into why you don't use Matchlight in a smoker later) [x] Odorless lighter fluid [x] Bag of food-grade smoker wood chips, any wood will do and won't effect the flavor of future smokes [x] Cheap olive oil [x] Standard degreasing dish soap [x] 2 clean cloth rags that you won't mind throwing away [x] Bowl or bucket for soapy water [x] Mixing bowl to soak wood chips [x] Long nosed lighter - fireplace lighter [x] Fire poker - like for a fireplace or a long stick will do [ ] opt. for this smoker- You will need to replace the thermometer after the first use. You won't need anything fancy, just search for smoker thermometer on eBay and get one that is stainless steel and from the US. 2-2 1/2" diameter and reading from 100-350f is essential, anything reading up to 450-550f is fine, but our range is 100-250f. This is the only mod we will need for this smoker. Don't drill ventilation holes in the coal pan- I think those people were trying to use this as a grill for 300f+... this is a smoker and actually does a great job hovering around the 200-225f mark out of the box. Now we are ready to go. Start by unboxing all of the smoker components and separate them into two groups- 1. Touching or close to the food (Lid, chamber, coal bowl or base, water bowl, side door, grills and grill brackets, etc) 2. Stuff that won't matter (Legs, handles, bolts and wingnuts) Next we want to mix the dish detergent with warm water and using one of the rags rub the inside and outside of the parts from group 1 down well and rinse the soap off of them. This will remove any oils left on the metal from manufacturing that may contaminate your food. My smoker's chamber and lid were wrapped in plastic and there was a residue left on the metal like a glue was used to seal it to the metal. Don't worry about scrubbing that stuff off. Its an inert material that will get sealed in by the [creosote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creosote) during the seasoning process. Just give everything a good scrubbing and rinse the soapy water off. After that take your second rag and coat the insides of the lid, side door and chamber with the olive oil. Do the same with the grills and any brackets that may be inside the chamber for supporting the grills and bowls. This will be our anti-rusting agent and will also help in the building of our nice creosote layer inside the smoker. Now we are ready for assembly. This smoker took me about 15 minutes to assemble per the directions. Do leave out the water bowl and two grills so you can load the coals easily. Pile the coals in a pyramid/cone shape standard to charcoal grilling. This smoker will take 4-5lb of coals for the initial lighting. Now we want t take two cups of the wood chips and place them in a bowl with water. Soaking your wood chips for smoking is a very important step to not forget. This keeps the chips from burning off quickly and gets you the most smoke from the chip before becoming ash. We want these to soak about 30 min before adding them to the coals, so now is a good time to get that going. Liberally apply the lighter fluid to the charcoal. Don't worry about the coals flashing during the lighting because this type of lighter fluid has a higher evaporation point than gasoline or zippo fluid. You want to soak the coals because it is much more dangerous to add fluid after lighting than using the correct amount out of the gate. Just don't create a lake in the charcoal pan, only soak the briquettes. Next we open the side door and light the long nosed lighter, lighting a couple points of the pyramid around the base. You'll see the pile take off and then in a couple minutes die down. This is fine. We want to see the edges of the coals start to turn white and spread across the surface of the briquettes. Once a fair number of the briquettes have turned about half white we want to knock the pile down with our fire poker and mix them around so that there is a balance of lit briquettes to ones that may still be lighting. Now we carefully install the water bowl (empty) and grills and wait for the coals to fully ignite. This can take 20-30 minutes from lighting, depending on the amount of success with the briquettes starting. You can now place the lid on with the vent fully open. After 20 min of heating up we can open the side door of the smoker and check its progress. By now the coals should be mostly white and spread evenly across the coal pan. If not move them around with the poking stick so that any unlit coals are touching white burning coals. Take about 1/4 of the wood chips and evenly scatter them on top of the coals and close the side door. Shortly after you will start to smell the sweet signature smell of a smoker from your choice of chips. For the next 3-4 hours you want to keep the temperature at about 225f. This is the smoking target temp when you will be smoking your meats. The smoking range is 200-225f, the next range is BBQ 225-350f, and above that is baking range. For this bullet smoker you will want to add 6-8 briquettes and a small amount of chips every 30 min or so to accomplish this. After 3 hours or so you will see the nice blackened surfaces inside of your smoker that prove a successful seasoning. The steps mentioned above can be repeated every time you want to use your smoker. If your smoker came with a water bowl be sure to fill it to the line while the smoker is heating and check it regularly to make sure it doesn't steam itself empty. You want to keep it with water so that it adds to the meats tenderness. You can also try adding a good beer to the water to add flavor to the food. Alternatively you can also add bourbon or whiskey in the water to experiment with different flavor-to-wood combinations like you would with the spices you use in your wet and dry rubs. **Why we don't use Matchlight charcoal in smokers** Smoking meats takes a long time and requires adding briquettes and wood chips throughout the process to maintain a target temperature. Charcoal by nature requires a high temperature for a sustained period to ignite. Matchlight briquettes contain ignition compound chemicals that make it easier for this to happen without adding lighting fluid. When you add these briquettes to a lit smoker or grill it releases the compounds as vapors and the chemicals end up in your food. To avoid this we use slow burning charcoal and only use added lighting fluid for the initial start. The already burning coals have enough heat to ignite the new coals and need nothing else. I hope you found this article to be informative, entertaining and that it inspires you to add a smoker to your backyard Mantivities arsenal. | body | With efficiency and maximum output at the forefront for all GPU miners that take their hash-game seriously it is essential to keep up with what coins are giving back the most. As the trading market fluctuates so does our profit margin and we need to adjust accordingly to stay on top with our gains. So what are the best altcoins GPU miners could consider to shift their operations or a portion to right now??? Let's take a look to see the top 5 that make the most sense today... #5 My rig's staple cryptocoin. ETH has been a solid consistent choice as it's cost/rewards ratio has made me a happy nerd. If my rig is mining anything all the time it is ETH. I see building a good portion of any folio with ETH as a good move since it is going to shift from a proof of work system to proof of stake, which, in my theory, will make the price jump considerably. And even from the angle of a trader I would go with ETH's stability due to the fact that it is ranked #2 on large trading platforms as the base currency of choice, second to BTC (which is not a bad place to be). With many pools to choose from it is easy to find one that fits your goals. #4 A good coin that has solid growth. If you analyze the charts for XMR you'll see a nice incline with the low end resistance making this a steady grower. Not only is it a smart choice to hold when looking at long positions, but its CryptoNight algo is also the least taxing on your electric meter. Because it is not from the Ethash family it can be mined parallel with ETH using Claymore's Dual Miner (Claymore...big up). There are many pools for this one as well. #3 Another good coin from the Ethash family. It hasn't shown a remarkable amount of growth, but at current profitability it's not a bad choice to mine and flip this one in the markets. Aside from its ridiculous spiking this past summer it has recently found low end resistance at around .0028 BTC (currently close to $10 USD) however, as soon as I got a deposit of ETC I would trade it for ETH, BTC or any other altcoin if long positions are your focus. #2 And yet another altcoin from the Ethash family near the top of the charts. This one a wee-one currently weighing in at around .000006 BTC (currently close to $.03 USD). I used to joke with the teller at the bank when I did my monthly withdraw of laundry quarters- "I prefer my paycheck in change so that it feels like I got more." This altcoin will do that for you as well. Just don't put this change into the stein for a vacation or rainy day; I'd flip this one into something more stable if the long position is what you're looking for. Mining pools are easy to find for this one as well. And last, but certainly not least.....#1 for this week of GPU mining is...... drdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrdrd PSHT! (whew!) ZCash is king of the hill this week when it comes to GPU mining profitability. Value wise it has been humming around a similar value to ETH (not including the nice spike of 20%+ at time of writing this article). Since it is created with the Equihash algo it is another coin (like XMR's KryptoNight algo) that will pull less watts to do the crunching, which is important when calculating operation costs. I like ZCash for the long position, but wouldn't hesitate flipping it into something else. There are many mining pools out there to choose from and since it is other than Ethash it can be mined parallel ETH with Claymore's Dual Miner. I hope you found this article to entertaining and informative! If you would like to donate a couple bits of alt to [my project](https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@mcmm/ethereum-how-i-m-turning-electricity-into-an-adventure-and-education-in-cryptotrading) it would be very much appreciated.
