I'm not making any price predictions below.\n\n## Bitcoin Value\n\nBitcoin has scarcity and Bitcoin has utility. These are two aspects of precious metals, such as Gold, that are shared and most often parrotted in the media at the moment.\n\nBitcoin's scarcity is predictable and finite. Gold is finite and less predictable.\n\nBitcoin's utility stems from the fact that it is open, borderless and decentralised. Gold has utility in electronics and dentistry.\n\nThe value of Gold and Bitcoin, if measured on scarcity and utility alone, doesn't stack up against something like crude oil.\n\n## Novelty\n\nAnother factor in the value of both Bitcoin and Gold is _novelty_. Gold jewelery accounts for a non-trivial part of the price/demand of Gold. There's nothing wrong with novelty playing a part.\n\nThe novelty of Bitcoin also has a very significant impact on the price/demand. In this case, the novelty is driven by hype around the price alone. You only need to look at the media, including almost any crypto-investment YouTube channels, and you'll see that price gets the lion's share of coverage. We've seen the impact of novelty -- both for and against -- between September 2017 and December 2017 and then January 2018 to March 2018.\n\nIf novelty is a significant factor in setting the price, and its novelty is primarily the increasing price, it isn't hard to see why some folks are calling Bitcoin a bubble or a fraud.       "body": "One thing that Bob may want to look into, is also having local trade organisations participate. Their involvement would be very minimal, but very useful.\n\nIf you create a smart contract that allows them to add a signed record to the blockchain that effectively says that they vouch for that tradesperson in a particular set of disciplines until a certain (renewal) date, that would allow your application, and your userbase, to be sure that their tradesperson is adequately licensed without having to check credentials that may be easy to forge or may be difficult for the layperson to grok.\n\nRevocation could be handled using a similar record.\n\nThis does mean that there's influence from a third party, which does sound like a bit of centralisation, but it's a third party with a vested interest in generally keeping things legit, and having an independent third party vouch for safety, compliance and other certifications can't hurt consumer confidence.\n\nEither way, it might add to the benefits you're providing your customers.\n\nIt'd be good to use an existing framework or create something general purpose for other folks looking to implement similar stuff in different areas or industries.\n\nHappy to chat more about it if anyone's interested.       "body": "<html>\n<h2>Background</h2>\n<p>I've been talking with a bunch of folks in meatspace about crypto currencies. It ranges from folks in finance, tech and folks in neither, but heard about it from somewhere and want to find out more. I'm sure that you're all in the same position.</p>\n<p>The questions always move straight to <em>\"Well how do I get some Bitcoin?\" </em>We talk about Coinbase and other exchanges and then the price of a single bitcoin. A lot of folks (especially those paying rent here in Silicon Valley) don't have $8k to throw at a single coin and get discouraged. Again, I'm sure you're all hearing the same.</p>\n<p>So we talk Satoshis and a lot of folks see to be happy waiting for a dip in things like BTC and ETH and throwing a bit of cash at it. A few hundred, or a thousand or two -- as with any of us, just whatever they can afford to lose.</p>\n<p>None of these folks are under the impression that they're going to make a fortune making this kind of investment, but turning $1000 into $2000 in a few months is a cool trick.</p>\n<p>I had a thought for an even lower-risk way to get a few Satoshis here and there without having to fork out a bunch of cash.</p>\n<h2>An Idea</h2>\n<p>For folks that want to have a little crypto, but don't necessarily want to commit to putting cash into it, I have another idea. It's not totally risk free, but does keep risk to a minimum. I thought I'd put it out there in case it helps anyone else. The usual disclaimers apply.</p>\n<ol>\n  <li>Set yourself up for being able to by crypto. Coinbase is pretty intuitive, but there's a bunch of others that may be better or worse. Do your own research.</li>\n  <li>Get hold of a crypto-backed Visa/Mastercard debit card. It doesn't matter which, as long as it has low or no fees. I've got a Shift Card, which is linked direct to my Coinbase account that makes life easier, but don't take that as an endorsement.</li>\n  <li>At the start of the month (or whenever makes sense), transfer your monthly budget for bills to your exchange. The regular, pedestrian stuff like phone bills. Only if you can afford to cover it if things go sideways obviously.</li>\n  <li>At the end of the month (or whenever makes sense), pay your bills with the crypto-backed debit card.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>The premise being that between when you buy crypto, and when use it to pay your bills, the currency will have hopefully increased in price. If it doesn't, you can cover the bills from elsewhere for that month and leave the crypto there to cover next month. The increase in price will mean that when you pay, you're spending fewer Satoshis and you'll have some left over. Keep them and they'll add up.</p>\n<h2>The Math</h2>\n<p>Using some completely made-up numbers, here's the math. If we assume that at the start of our billing period, we buy $250 in BTC at $5700 per BTC, and that in that same month, BTC rises 25%, here's what it would look like (bugs in my beer-soaked Python code notwithstanding):</p>\n<ol>\n  <li>USD spent on BTC: 250.000000</li>\n  <li>BTC price in USD: 5700.000000</li>\n  <li>BTC bought: 0.043860</li>\n  <li>BTC price rise %: 25.000000</li>\n  <li>BTC value in USD: 7125.000000</li>\n  <li>BTC left after spend: 0.010965</li>\n  <li>Leftover BTC in USD: 62.500000</li>\n</ol>\n<p>Fame? Fortune? Hardly. But you've got some crypto already.</p>\n<p>Things like phone, internet, electricity, gas are all things that are known quantities each month (and probably set up for autopayment from a credit card). Round the amount up to the nearest $10 amount (or whatever), and you have buffer, plus something akin to Acorns-style investment.</p>\n<h2>The Risks</h2>\n<p>There's a number of risks here, but probably fewer than if you invested in something properly. Crypto could drop instead of rising (and that has happened), Blockchain and crypto could hit zero, and it's entirely possible that that zombie apocalypse is nigh (have you <em>been</em> to a Walmart lately?).</p>\n<p>In this case, there's not much in reward, but you're only risking your monthly bill budget... and probably only for a month. Obviously take care risking that. Or don't. Not my business. :)</p>\n<p>What are the odds that you'll see the above hypothetical %25 increase? After all, they're taking a cut from your wallet.</p>\n<h2>Summary</h2>\n<p>Anyway, this is just a theory based on some tools and trends I've seen. I thought it was novel enough to share.       "body": "Buying fresh vegetables for one person isn't ideal. I rarely need a whole bunch of celery or a whole lettuce or cabbage. The risk of them going bad before I've finished them is high and I'd rather not waste any. A lot of those end up as vegetable stock, but today we'll look at turning excess Napa Cabbage into a quick kimchi that will last months.\n\nMy usual kimchi recipe involves a glutinous rice flour porridge and not pre-cutting the cabbage, whereas this one is more straightforward and almost as good. I've also used leftover baby bok choy for a non-traditional alternative. The Korean gochigaru (pepper flakes) might involve a trip to your local Korean market.\n\n## Ingredients\n * Napa Cabbage\n * Kosher or sea salt\n * Carrot (grated)\n * Daikon Radish (grated)\n * Green Onions (finely chopped)\n * Gochigaru (Korean pepper flakes)\n * Ginger (finely chopped)\n * Garlic (crushed)\n * Fish Sauce (optional for vegan -- can substitute shiitake dashi or small amount of soy sauce)\n\nThe ratios of each are pretty flexible. As a guideline, for each decent, dense Napa cabbage, I'd start with the following\n * 1 cup daikon\n * 2/3 cup carrot, gochigaru\n * 8 garlic cloves, 2 inch chunk of ginger\n * A few tablespoons or Fish sauce\n * 2% salt by cabbage weight\n\n## Directions\n1. Cut cabbage into bite sized pieces.\n1. Wash cabbage and drain.\n1. Thoroughly mix in all of the salt.\n1. Allow to brine for 2hrs.\n1. Rinse salt from cabbage and drain.\n1. Thoroughly mix in all other ingredients.\n1. Cover and leave on the kitchen counter for 24hrs.\n1. Refrigerate.\n\nAfter that first 24hrs, I usually pack it tightly into individual jars, to make for easier sharing, plus to avoid cross contamination in case there's ever a mold problem.       "body": "Stews and braises. The perfect end to a tough cut of meat.\n\nFor the times when I don't have half a day to simmer a stew low and slow, I turn to one of my trusty pressure cookers to help me bend time. Using a kind of [ragu pasta sauce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neapolitan_rag%C3%B9) as an example, I'll demonstrate a way to get a decent stew in just over half an hour.\n\n![IMG_20170902_181120268.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfSzv6WXXix1osTtwq6pPY9iCP9CExJUbWXyzq136TYPZ/IMG_20170902_181120268.jpg)\n\n## Ingredients\n\n * 1lb cubed stew meat. Beef, lamb, goat, venison, pork -- whatever you have handy.\n * 1 12oz can tomatoes (diced, crushed, whatever)\n * 1/2 an onion diced\n * 4 cloves garlic crushed or chopped\n * Any other vegetables finely diced (I often use carrots, capsicum / bell pepper, zucchini)\n * 1/3oz dried porcini mushrooms\n * 1tbsp dried thyme\n * 1tbsp dried oregano\n * 1/2 cup dry red wine\n * 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce\n * Salt and Pepper\n * 1 tbsp tomato paste\n\n## Steps\n\n1. Reconstitute the mushrooms in a small amount of hot water.\n1. For a smoother texture, blend the tomato and vegetables (optional).\n1. Over high heat, brown the meat in some oil in the open pressure cooker.\n1. Reduce to medium-high heat and add the onion until translucent.\n1. Add the garlic, tomato and vegetables.\n1. Finely chop the now-soft porcini mushrooms and add to the pressure cooker along with the liquid.\n1. Add the herbs, tomato paste, the wine and the worcestershire sauce.\n1. Close the pressure cooker lid and bring up to pressure.\n1. Once at pressure, reduce the heat to maintain pressure and cook for 20-25 minutes.\n1. Remove from heat and allow the pressure to dissipate.\n\nIt will need a stir once the lid comes off and if there's too much liquid a quick simmer should take care of that. A knob of butter never hurt matters either :).\n\nServe with pasta and parmesan cheese or cracked pepper to your liking.\n\nThe tomato paste, worcestershire and porcini mushrooms give you a big umami kick right in the glutamates.",
