| body | I liked the theory very much, as also the names have the same Idea behind them as in bitTorrent , bitCoin, thus it might be the case , but you cannot just assume because one guy you noticed follows all the descriptions means it's him, it more likely that all people that follow these subjects have a lot in common because it's all about discussion and ideas, and there might be a lot of guys same as bram cohen, which are capable and at same intellectual level yet still not known as public figures, but well done I will look into bram cohen work to see if there might be a link :) |

| body | I recently set up an ethereum mining machine, and it was quite an interesting experience. I'd like to outline on a high level here exactly what you need to know and how set it up. First of all, to set up a mining machine, you are going to need the hardware for it. Compared to Bitcoin, Ethereum is mined using GPUs (graphic cards basically), and not on dedicated hardware, and also not on normal computers. So you are going to need to purchase specialised hardware (the GPUs) to mine Ethereum. Right now, there are about four GPU types that make sense in mining - AMD 570 series, AMD 580 series, NVidia 1070 series. As a second choice, you can go for AMD RX480, AMD RX470, Nvidia 1060. These are the actual graphic card chips inside the card, the model of the card may differ (e.g MSI RX580, XFX RX580 etc). Once you have chosen your GPU, you need to purchase it online (and this is the hard part because they are all pretty much sold out now). If you find them, try not to send more than $400 on a single one, as it will otherwise lose you money. Once you have purchased your cards, you will need to buy the other parts of the computer that you need to connect these GPUs to. These are the motherboard, processor, hard drive, ram and power supplies. You will also need some devices called Risers that basically allow you to connect your GPUs to the mainboard using USB. Once you have all the parts together, you assemble them into an open air computer with the GPUs connected to it. Note that each mainboard can take between 6 and 10 GPUs (maybe some can take more, but at most 2 more), so for each set of cards, you will need a new mainboard to add them. Once hardware is working, you install windows or ubuntu, then download the software that will do the actual mining. There are various options, but a good one is called Claymore - it will do everything for you - you just need to configure it with your address and join a mining pool. You typically want to mine on a mining pool, which is basically just a bunch of people deciding to pool their computers together to mine together (and share the rewards). Once everything is working, what people typically do then is to overclock their cards. Out of the box, the GPUs will give you about 20MH/s (mega-hash per second). The megahash represents how much Ether you can mine - the more it is, the more you can mine. 100Mh/ should give you about $300/month (at current prices). So with overclocking, you can basically increase each GPU from 20MH/s to about 30MH/s. This gives you more money for the same mining effort. To overclock, you typically go to the GPU and modify the bios so that the memory of the card runs faster. You also modify the processor clocks of the GPU so that they run faster - you can also set it that the card uses less power. Note that GPUs have all these settings available for users to modify using a bios editor, but they can make the card instable, so you would typically want to experiment a bit to get the right settings. There are a lot of details I have left out, but the above is basically the high level overview of how to setup an Ethereum mining machine. In subsequent posts, I will go into the details of how each part happens. |

| body | To find Satoshi, we are looking for someone very specific, with such a rare set of skills. There are only few people in the world who could match this. For example, if some kind of crazy VR game came up, with a few awesome features - of all the billions of people in the world, only very few people would even be able to code it. So the entire search space reduces to VR coders, and now we are at just a few thousand of people. The more clues we have, the closer we will get. So let us gather all the evidence we have about who Satoshi Nakamoto is: * Satoshi is between the ages of 35 and 50 * Satoshi has developed software for the Windows platform professionally * Satoshi has been active on Usenet * Satoshi has shown interest in HashCash or any other form of internet money in the past - and this interest would be recorded online * Satoshi has shown interest online in a forum about Maths, Physics, Encryption or Computer Algorithms * Satoshi has written some significant software in the past (this is not his very first hit) Using the evidence above, we can zoom in on who our most likely candidate is. A) **35 to 50**: Satoshi uses a form of writing that was common on the internet from 2000 to 2010. This style of writing was used in usenet, in sites like slashdot, metafilter and so on. The internet writing style nowadays has changed significantly - people growing up in the 2010 to 2018 internet write completely differently. This naturally ages him. B) **Windows**: Satoshi uses a form of variable naming that was common in Microsoft Visual Studio 6. People who professionally coded for windows around that time used that particular variable naming convention. C) **Usenet**: Generally, most of the information that Satoshi built Bitcoin on was available in Usenet. It is quite unlikely that Satoshi was only lurking and never posted. He would have posted, but never as the name Satoshi. That means that any serious candidate would certainly have a Usenet presence. D) **Prior Postings**: Long before getting involved in the BitCoin project, Satoshi would have left a footprint of his interest in digital money online. It would be impossible for him to have made the anonymous plan, way before he even knew that it would work. There must be some prior postings indicating interest. E) **Math**: Bitcoin does not live in isolation - the type of people who research about such things would typically have interests in math, physics, algorithms or encryption. Traces of this would be available online. F) **Prior Art**: It is highly unlikely that Satoshi has never released any software, commercial or open source before. Our candidate will certainly have done so before. Combining all these, a single person keeps on popping up that fulfils all the criteria. Someone who until now has not been linked to the bitcoin founder. A quote about him: *“He's very good at his strengths. When he gets an idea in his head, he works it over until he has it solved or knows it can't be solved. I've rarely seen him give up on problems” - Len Sassaman* In the year 2000, 9 years before the public release of Bitcoin, he posted on Usenet: Subject: >**“Some tweaks of time-release crypto/non-parallel hashcash”** > “In the second technique, Bob would like to prove to Carol that he did some work to Carol without having to get a challenge from her beforehand. To do this, he takes a message he wants to prove he mulled over and hashes it, then squares the result repeatedly (mod N) a total of 10^6 - 1 times, and sends his message and the result to Carol, who takes the hash to the E power and verifies that it's equal to the value Bob sent her squared (mod N). This technique can be made to work for work factors greater than 10^6 by taking the hash of one bit of work and including it in the next repeatedly, but that results in a much larger proof of work than the constant-sized one the previous technique does.” In this message, he is talking to the founder of HashCash. He gets replies from Adam Back, the creator of HashCash, which has often been called the inspiration for Bitcoin. Who was this person? None other than **Bram Cohen**, the founder of BitTorrent. The name of his website was BitConjurer.org. It kind of makes sense that he would call his digital money BitCoin, but let’s not be hasty in jumping to conclusions yet. Let's look at the evidence linking Satoshi to Bram Cohen. * First of all, they are both the same age. Bram was born in 1975 and Satoshi was born in 1975. Which fits in quite well with the age we expect Satoshi to be. * Bram invented the big hit software BitTorrent, so he has some good past experience developing big software. * Bram comes from a time when the particular variable naming was common for windows code - basically, he codes like Satoshi * Bram was ousted from BitTorrent as CEO in 2005, and the domain Bitcoin.org was registered in 2008. 3 years is about the right time to develop this. * Bram has shown regular online interest in cryptography, mathematics, puzzles and algorithms More importantly, the following are true: 1. During the period when Satoshi was most active on forums, Bram posted the least on his blog. This is typical for those active on other forums. He had a history of actively posting till Satoshi started posting on bitcoin, then his posts dropped dramatically 2. In spite of early interest in bitcoin (in 2000), Bram was not posting about bitcoin with his own name as the crypto cash resurgence happened 3. Bram has an [interesting post](https://bramcohen.livejournal.com/73933.html) about hiding oneself online from 2010, showing that he has been interested in online cloaking. 4. Both Satoshi and Bram Cohen were talking about [digital signatures](https://bramcohen.livejournal.com/73933.html) in 2009. The evidence is circumstantial, but there are really very few people who are gifted enough to have come up with Bitcoin. Bram Cohen is one of the few - and he showed interest in this as far back as the year 2000. He is also born in the same year as Satoshi, has very similar opinions, and created software prior to that called BitTorrent. I could be wrong, but in my opinion, it is possible that Bram Cohen is Satoshi Nakamoto. Final quotes from Bram Cohen: *“I can come off as pretty arrogant, but it's because I know I'm right. I'm very, very good at writing protocols. I've accomplished more working on my own than I ever did as part of a team.”* *“I am a technological activist. I have a political agenda. I am in favor of basic human rights: to free speech, to use any information and technology, to purchase and use recreational drugs, to enjoy and purchase so-called 'vices', to be free of intruders, and to privacy.”* *“You get so tired of having your work die. I just wanted to make something that people would actually use.”* |

The more clues we have, the closer we will get.\n\nSo let us gather all the evidence we have about who Satoshi Nakamoto is:\n\n* Satoshi is between the ages of 35 and 50\n* Satoshi has developed software for the Windows platform professionally\n* Satoshi has been active on Usenet\n* Satoshi has shown interest in HashCash or any other form of internet money in the past - and this interest would be recorded online\n* Satoshi has shown interest online in a forum about Maths, Physics, Encryption or Computer Algorithms\n* Satoshi has written some significant software in the past (this is not his very first hit)\n\nUsing the evidence above, we can zoom in on who our most likely candidate is.\n\nA) **35 to 50**: Satoshi uses a form of writing that was common on the internet from 2000 to 2010. This style of writing was used in usenet, in sites like slashdot, metafilter and so on. The internet writing style nowadays has changed significantly - people growing up in the 2010 to 2018 internet write completely differently. This naturally ages him. \n\nB) **Windows**: Satoshi uses a form of variable naming that was common in Microsoft Visual Studio 6. People who professionally coded for windows around that time used that particular variable naming convention.\n\nC) **Usenet**: Generally, most of the information that Satoshi built Bitcoin on was available in Usenet. It is quite unlikely that Satoshi was only lurking and never posted. He would have posted, but never as the name Satoshi. That means that any serious candidate would certainly have a Usenet presence.\n\nD) **Prior Postings**: Long before getting involved in the BitCoin project, Satoshi would have left a footprint of his interest in digital money online. It would be impossible for him to have made the anonymous plan, way before he even knew that it would work. There must be some prior postings indicating interest.\n\nE) **Math**: Bitcoin does not live in isolation - the type of people who research about such things would typically have interests in math, physics, algorithms or encryption. Traces of this would be available online.\n\nF) **Prior Art**: It is highly unlikely that Satoshi has never released any software, commercial or open source before. Our candidate will certainly have done so before.\n\nCombining all these, a single person keeps on popping up that fulfils all the criteria. Someone who until now has not been linked to the bitcoin founder. A quote about him:\n\n*“He's very good at his strengths. When he gets an idea in his head, he works it over until he has it solved or knows it can't be solved. I've rarely seen him give up on problems” - Len Sassaman*\n\nIn the year 2000, 9 years before the public release of Bitcoin, he posted on Usenet:\n\nSubject: \n\n>**“Some tweaks of time-release crypto/non-parallel hashcash”**\n> “In the second technique, Bob would like to prove to Carol that he did some work to Carol without having to get a challenge from her beforehand. This technique can be made to work for work factors greater than 10^6 by taking the hash of one bit of work and including it in the next repeatedly, but that results in a much larger proof of work than the constant-sized one the previous technique does.”\n\nIn this message, he is talking to the founder of HashCash. He gets replies from Adam Back, the creator of HashCash, which has often been called the inspiration for Bitcoin.\n\nWho was this person? None other than **Bram Cohen**, the founder of BitTorrent. The name of his website was BitConjurer.org. It kind of makes sense that he would call his digital money BitCoin, but let’s not be hasty in jumping to conclusions yet.\n\n\n\nLet's look at the evidence linking Satoshi to Bram Cohen.\n\n* First of all, they are both the same age. Bram was born in 1975 and Satoshi was born in 1975. Which fits in quite well with the age we expect Satoshi to be.\n\n* Bram invented the big hit software BitTorrent, so he has some good past experience developing big software.\n\n* Bram comes from a time when the particular variable naming was common for windows code - basically, he codes like Satoshi\n\n* Bram was ousted from BitTorrent as CEO in 2005, and the domain Bitcoin.org was registered in 2008. 3 years is about the right time to develop this.\n\n* Bram has shown regular online interest in cryptography, mathematics, puzzles and algorithms\n\nMore importantly, the following are true:\n\n1. During the period when Satoshi was most active on forums, Bram posted the least on his blog. This is typical for those active on other forums. He had a history of actively posting till Satoshi started posting on bitcoin, then his posts dropped dramatically\n2. In spite of early interest in bitcoin (in 2000), Bram was not posting about bitcoin with his own name as the crypto cash resurgence happened\n3. Bram has an [interesting post](https://bramcohen.livejournal.com/73933.html) about hiding oneself online from 2010, showing that he has been interested in online cloaking.\n4. Both Satoshi and Bram Cohen were talking about [digital signatures](https://bramcohen.livejournal.com/73933.html) in 2009.\n\nThe evidence is circumstantial, but there are really very few people who are gifted enough to have come up with Bitcoin. Bram Cohen is one of the few - and he showed interest in this as far back as the year 2000. He is also born in the same year as Satoshi, has very similar opinions, and created software prior to that called BitTorrent.\n\nI could be wrong, but in my opinion, it is possible that Bram Cohen is Satoshi Nakamoto.\n\nFinal quotes from Bram Cohen:\n\n\n*“I can come off as pretty arrogant, but it's because I know I'm right. I'm very, very good at writing protocols. I've accomplished more working on my own than I ever did as part of a team.”*\n\n\n*“I am a technological activist. I have a political agenda. I am in favor of basic human rights: to free speech, to use any information and technology, to purchase and use recreational drugs, to enjoy and purchase so-called 'vices', to be free of intruders, and to privacy.”*\n\n\n*“You get so tired of having your work die. I just wanted to make something that people would actually use.”*",
