| body |
https://wearethemancave.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/magazines-e1538072009952.jpg

If you've been online for any length of time, and particularly if you own a business or do any online marketing, then you are likely familiar with the phrase "content is king." It used to be the mantra among content marketers, and I guess it still is. But what few content marketers, even today, realize is that content is not so much a business model as it is the fuel that runs an online business. There are many different online business models. Yet, every one of them is in the publishing business. Even brick-and-mortar businesses that publish content online are in the publishing business. You can't escape it. When I talk to people about their online marketing goals, I try to drive this point home. No matter what kind of business you run, if you produce online content for any purpose, you're a publisher. That's an important sticking point, but many business owners don't think of themselves as publishers. I think they should.
5 Online Business Models That Rely on Publishing Great Content
There are hundreds of online business models. I'm just going to talk about five. But each of these business models requires content. In order for that content to reach its intended audience, it has to be published. Who's going to publish it? Ideally, it would be the business being promoted, but it doesn't have to be. A business might earn media exposure, in which case, it is the publication featuring them that is the publisher. Now, here they are, five business models that rely on content publishing:

E-commerce website - E-commerce is one of the oldest business models on the internet. Amazon opened its doors in 1994. That makes the company older than Google. Starting with nothing but books, the idea was to become the world's largest book store. They did that. Now, they're the world's largest department store. It doesn't matter what you sell, if you sell anything online, you need content. You need product descriptions. You need content that attracts potential buyers, persuades them to buy your merchandise, and come back for more. An e-commerce store with great product descriptions and other content is much like the old Sears & Roebuck mail order catalogs your grandparents ordered from. Sears & Roebuck was a department store, but they were also a publisher. So is Amazon. So are you if you do e-commerce.

Information portal - Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. We won't get into the issue of trust, but Wikipedia has millions of web pages, all packed with information. And it's very popular. Niche websites may publish information on health, travel, literature, cars, sex, or any number of other topics. Unlike e-commerce websites, the primary revenue channel for information portals isn't merchandise. It could be advertising, donations, sponsored content, premium information products, or several other money-making channels. Nevertheless, information portals are in the content publishing business.

News publications - This is a no-brainer. Newspapers have a long history of publishing the latest in current events and earning revenues from advertising. In the 19th century, they published literature alongside the news. In the 20th century, news agencies developed standards for objective reporting. In the early 21st century, we've seen a mass migration from print to online publishing. It's still publishing.

Independent artisan - Artisanal publishing is a class of its own. The success of Amazon has given rise to the independent author who publishes their own books. Many have sold millions, and some have gone on to sign contracts with major print publishing houses. But other artisans can also get into the publishing game. Visual artists can publish their creations online, and even sell them. Crafters can do the same. In a way, this fits into the e-commerce model, however, I give artisanal publishing its own category because the artisan is in business to sell his own creations whereas an e-commerce website is often in business to sell the creations of others.

Social media - Social media is an interesting phenomenon. While it is often viewed as an inbound marketing channel--which it is--it is also a brand new publishing model. Facebook allows artisans, housewives, and everyone else an avenue for creating content that generates interest, creates buzz, and drives traffic to the point of sale. Instagram and Pinterest do the same in a more visual way. YouTube is social media for video production, a type of publishing. Steemit is a blockchain-based social media publishing platform that allows creators a way to earn from each post and from interacting with the content that others produce. Similar blockchain-based social publishing platforms are currently in production.

Making Money Online Relies on Content Publishing
To some degree, virtually every type of money-making opportunity online relies on publishing. Whether the publishing that is being done is for the purpose of marketing a product or service, promoting a brand, selling items directly, or simply for information purposes, the fact remains, we are all publishers now. It's important to understand this because your success as a business person, an author or other artisan, an information publisher, or whatever category you place yourself in depends a great deal on how good at publishing you become. It's important to learn the tools of the trade so that you can beat the competition. I will use this column in the future to discuss online publishing strategies for a variety of business purposes. Welcome to the World Wide Web of Publishing.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://wearethemancave.com/welcome-to-the-world-wide-web-of-publishing/

|

| body |
https://wearethemancave.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/lonely-428380_1920.jpg

Hi there. I'm Raymondspeaks. You can find me on Steemit under the same username. I'm the founder and owner of the Man Cave. This post is part of the Bro-basics series we have coming out, aimed at men who grew up fatherless, with no father on the scene and didn't have the guidance in life that others did. I didn't have a Dad on the scene, and those that were along for the ride didn't seem too interested in raising me as one of their own. I had to make my own way. This series is to help young lands that need to find their own way, like I did, and many others that I've known throughout their lives. ----------------------------------- It's difficult being raised without a father. Even worse if there's none on the scene. For those of you lucky enough to have a Mum that took it upon herself to burp and fart, play sports, and fix things with you I salute her -- but for most of us this wasn't the case. I was raised by a very feminine woman that solidified what she wanted in a man into me; and for the men that are aware (as I became much later) we will know that a woman tells you that she wants one thing, but will need another. For me, I was the world's best white knight. I'd dash in on my trusty steed and save my pretty damsel from her mean and nasty boyfriend, and tell her that he wasn't worth being with. Of course, because I assumed that I was a better pick of the bunch to be matched with her. I wouldn't shout at you I wouldn't be mean to you I'd be your eternal yes man and fulfil every one of your needs

On an honest note I'll tell you that it came to me why I was the worlds best white knight whilst I was writing this out. There's no doubt about it, my Dad was a mean old bastard and in my mind my Mum always needed saving from him. Perhaps as I was growing up I always felt the need to compete with him also as he showed me no love; only my mother did. I expect this to be the case. You'll find this is true to life though, everyone chooses their partners on unfinished business they have still blackening their heart from childhood. We all have those paradigms until we fully recognise them, and understand them as unhealthy. So my early adulthood was spent latching onto emotionally available women and purposely demonising their boyfriends for my own gain, whilst letting it remain secret that I wanted whoever I was attached to at the time for myself. It sounds really manipulative, doesn't it? That I would talk shit behind others backs whilst harbouring a few secrets of my own.

I would always get angry too. Angry that whenever I'd take the plunge at probably the most inappropriate time and ask someone on a date she wasn't ready to date, yet in three days afterwards she'd have met someone new. I hated that, yet I would push that anger further down into my stomach alongside the cesspit of despair and remain smiley and happy, and oblivious to the fact that I was making a fool out of the woman I was supposed to be friends with, and myself. It began to grow tiresome and tedious. It was like I didn't like myself, or anyone else for that matter. I mean I thought I liked myself; if you had asked me that question I'd have told you that of course I liked myself, but I really didn't. People that enjoy their own company don't say yes to things from people they don't like. People that like themselves don't take a mental account of favours people owe you, people that like themselves understand that everyone has their flaws; in my mind I thought I was perfect and there was no room for mistakes, which is why I crucified myself if I made one. Growing up with trauma isn't easy.

It all started to get better in the summer of 2006. I had just lost my job as a cook and a dishwasher at Sizewell A Power Station. The higher ranked staff weren't very nice and were taking their frustration out on us, and as a result I plunged deeper into the bottle and ended up taking days off all the time. And there was me, sitting in the darkness, with a half empty bottle of Vodka wondering what the hell I would do next. There was always a burning passion inside of me to do great things. I always wanted to be a leader, an artist, an entrepreneur; yet I had no-one to show me how, no-one to lead the way. The only people I knew were alcoholic people and tradesmen. I was always a white-collar worker at heart; someone that works in an office and creates/moves things. If I had someone in my life to show me the way, but no, the minuscule amount of time Dad was in my life he always wanted me to follow in his footsteps; engineering. Nah, I'm not a hands on person. Luckily I was snagged by a really pro-active person that encouraged me to go to a "work-rehabilitation" centre that had dealt with hundreds of people like me in the past; fatherless boys, had lost their way, taken to drugs, etc. I don't want to bore you with the details but as I sit here I haven't looked back since. I've been sober since 2006, I've won awards; national awards, as we speak I run two popularly growing Projects and I am a recognised speaker on many platforms. I started off my journey as a teacher; I realised I didn't enjoy that, so I went into content creation and crypto-entrepreneurship. We're now trialling the first ever crypto-social project for men. It's exciting times. Stick with Bro-basics. We know what we're talking about and we hope to bring you some of the best insights and tips we can offer. | body |
https://wearethemancave.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/excercise-gear.jpg

Lets begin a fitness and exercise journey together! Welcome to the first installment of The Man Cave Fitness. I am going to be writing a series of articles in hopes to help encourage people to begin making healthier life choices. These articles will be able to help you make better choices with your meals, offer some exercise workouts that you can do at home, and just offer some over all fitness advice so that we can all get healthier together!
Have a plan:
Whether your goal is to become a bodybuilder or lose a few pounds and just generally become healthier you will not be able to accomplish any of those goals without a set plan. Some simple things to remember when making your plan is to take small steps when starting out on your fitness journey. If you just dive in head first and try to drastically change every aspect of your life, more likely than not you are going to get burnt out, and wind up falling right back in to the bad habits that you had prior to starting your journey.

When I talk about making steps you can do things like instead of having a soda with every meal that you eat drink water with one or two meals to start cutting out on the sugar that you're putting in your body from all the sodas. When you make your food at home or you're going out to eat, instead of ordering that greasy burger and fries, maybe try something like grilled chicken and fries; or have a salad for one meal just so that you are slowly changing your diet instead of a drastic overhaul, because major drastic changes are a sure-fire way to fail. (speaking from personal experience on that) Do not ever get discouraged when you start a journey to better yourself. It is easy to get discouraged and compare yourself to others on social media, but remember this, a healthy lifestyle is not a sprint! This is a marathon changes aren't going to happen overnight it's going to take some hard work and dedication, but if you stick with it and keep making the small changes in the end every bit of work will pay off.
Exercise
Now I am not trying to tell you that you need to go out and run 10 miles or bench press 300 pounds for exercise, my point in exercise is that you just need to get up and do something.

Current studies indicate that you should be exercising for 150 minutes a week which is roughly 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week. I understand how overwhelming those number can seem, but again do not let numbers like this discourage you. If you went out and walked 10 or 15 minutes everyday or every other day that is better than just sitting down and never doing any physical activity. The longer that you consistently do physical activity you will notice that you will be able toincrease the duration and the intensity of your workouts. In the long run nutrition is the most important aspect of any fitness journey so when you combine good nutrition with a consistent workout routine, you are destined to see some amazing results!
Workout Examples: All of these can be done at home

Workout 1: Walk/Run 1 mile or 0.5 mile

Workout 2: 10 Air squats, 10 push ups, 10 sit ups and go through that repetition as many times as you can on a 10 minute running clock

Workout 3: 30 sec plank, 30 sec rest do that for 10 minutes

Now this has been a very brief intro in to a series of articles that I will be writing expanding on the general ideas that I discussed in this article. My last tip of advice for anyone from the absolute beginner to the professional, never be afraid to ask for help! You are never alone in a journey to change your life. There are always people on the journey with you, and it is always great to have some moral support along the way!

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://wearethemancave.com/exercise-part-one/

|

| body |
https://wearethemancave.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/crossfit.jpg

Saturdays at my Crossfit box as well as many other is a community workout. Anyone from the community is welcome to come in and workout with us free of charge. We usually have 3 or 4 new people come in for the workout on any given Saturday. Well today was no different class starts at 9:00 am and we had about 25 people in the class and four new individuals showed up to see what crossfit is all about. The Crossfit Workout Well today's WOD (Workout of the Day) consisted of 20-minute AMRAP (As many rounds as possible) in the 20-minute time frame, but on top of the AMRAP, we had a max calorie row on the concept 2 rower during the 20 minutes as well. The workout consisted of 20 burpees, 30 dumbbell snatch’s, 40 goblet squats, and then we went back down so 30 dumbbell snatches, and then 20 burpees. Now all of these movements were done as a team; which means that all of these movements had to be done in sync at the same time as the other teammates. You were able to have a team of 3 or 4 members, I wound up on a team of 3. So the way this all went down was 2 of the team members would be working at the same time in sync on the movements I just listed and then the 3rd teammate would be on the rower doing the max calorie row. Now you could switch places with each other at any point during the workout, however, the rower never stopped moving unless you were switching places, but you could not continue to work on the movements until both partners were ready to continue at the same time. This workout was really fun and my team took first place in the max calorie row with 275 calories, and we took second on the movements completing 2 full rounds and 4 dumbbell snatches.

CrossFit Community Now for those that have never done CrossFit, I strongly encourage you to give it a try. Yes, the workouts are tough, but there is nothing that is done in a CrossFit box that you are not capable of doing with some type of scaling option no matter your fitness level. The thing that separates CrossFit gyms from your everyday normal fitness gym with machines is the sense of community. I have never been to a normal commercial gym where other people inside go out of their way to encourage you to finish your workout or get one more rep, everyone just puts their headphones on does some bicep curls and then goes home. In a CrossFit gym, you will never see someone doing a workout where there is not a handful of people standing there clapping and cheering you on to the finish. Not only is the community great inside the gym, but outside as well. Members from the gym have Christmas parties together, we go to birthday parties for other members children, we have annual cookouts, and we do community outreach such as collecting canned good for donation, or helping fill up backpacks for families that can't afford to gather all the necessary supplies for the school year. So if you have ever thought about trying out CrossFit, DO IT you are not just joining a gym. You are joining a family of like-minded people who all want to improve their quality of life through fitness and nutrition! This workout was really fun and my team took first place in the max calorie row with 275 calories, and we took second on the movements completing 2 full rounds and 4 dumbbell snatches.\r\n\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\r\nCrossFit Community\r\n\r\nNow for those that have never done CrossFit, I strongly encourage you to give it a try. Yes, the workouts are tough, but there is nothing that is done in a CrossFit box that you are not capable of doing with some type of scaling option no matter your fitness level. The thing that separates CrossFit gyms from your everyday normal fitness gym with machines is the sense of community. I have never been to a normal commercial gym where other people inside go out of their way to encourage you to finish your workout or get one more rep, everyone just puts their headphones on does some bicep curls and then goes home.\r\n\r\nIn a CrossFit gym, you will never see someone doing a workout where there is not a handful of people standing there clapping and cheering you on to the finish. Not only is the community great inside the gym, but outside as well. Members from the gym have Christmas parties together, we go to birthday parties for other members children, we have annual cookouts, and we do community outreach such as collecting canned good for donation, or helping fill up backpacks for families that can't afford to gather all the necessary supplies for the school year.\r\n\r\nSo if you have ever thought about trying out CrossFit, DO IT you are not just joining a gym. You are joining a family of like-minded people who all want to improve their quality of life through fitness and nutrition!\r\n\r\nOrigionally published on Steemit, republished here with the author's permission.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nYou may also like this brewery article by Eric Minix!

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://wearethemancave.com/crossfit-saturday-fun-ctional-fitness/

",

I'm serious, there is no way possible that a person not possessing superhero strength can eat just one of these cracked cookies! We have even heard of moms hiding them from their children and kids volunteering to do chores for an extra one. THEY ARE THAT CRAZY GOOD! O.k., o.k., but you have been warned.

Ingredients

One (1) box of “butter recipe” cake mix. Any brand will do, but do not follow the cake making instructions.

One (1) block of regular cream cheese. Not fat free, remember these are addictive for a reason.

One (1) large egg. Of the chicken variety, but on a cool trivia not, Guinea hen eggs make the most amazing cakes and baked goods, but you will need two instead of one. If you do not know what a Guinea hen is, then I may begin to question your southern authenticity.

One (1) stick of salted, sweet cream butter.

About two (2) cups of white powdered sugar.

That is it, sweet and simple. It is important to note that the cream cheese and the butter needs to be SOFTENED, but not melted.

Directions
First, you need to preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Next, in a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, egg, cream cheese, and butter until well blended. It is important that the ingredients be hand mixed, because using a mixer, although easier, will not produce the same addictive results and your cookies will come out flat and boring, just like your Uncle Fred. Besides, nothing good comes easy. Now it is time to prepare the cookie sheet by spraying it with a coating of “butter flavored” cooking spray. Avoid the temptation to taste the spray, I can assure you from experience it is not as tasty as you would imagine.

At this point, I place one cup of the flour in a medium size bowl and put it in between the mixing bowl and the cookie sheet. Take a table spoon and scoop out some of the batter and then roll it into a ball shape. It really helps to coat your fingers in powdered sugar because the mixture is extremely sticky. Take the cookie ball and roll it around in the bowl of powdered sugar until it is well coated. Now this is when the magic happens……take the ball and SLAM it down on the cookie sheet. Yes, I said “slam”. Slam it like you would that nosy co-worker who keeps trying to get all up in your business. The slamming process is what will produce the flavor catching “cracks” that give the cookies their aptly descriptive moniker, cracked cookies. Normally the cook time is between 12-15 minutes, but you know your oven better than I do so adjust as necessary. The cookies are done when the top of the cookies look wettish and the sides are beginning to turn golden brown. Once the cookies are out of the oven, sprinkle with other cup of powdered sugar to give them that polished finished look.
These cracked cookies are best enjoyed warm, but I guarantee you will not have any problems what-so-ever in having cool leftovers. Make sure the cookies are completely cooled before storing them in any closed container. If you know that people are coming over that are not your favorite, hide the cookies because these are just too good to waste on mediocre people!
Shared under Creative Commons License Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) from my original work first published onDevTome . The last thing most people need in this challenging economy are additional, unnecessary funds coming out of their households. I have been a police officer for 19 years and I have personally issued in excess of 9000 tickets in that time. Each citation I issued was done so after careful consideration of many factors because I knew that I was taking money out of a household that in many cases needed it. Some of the people I encountered on traffic stops made it very hard to write them a ticket and in many cases the people I gave tickets to made it extremely easy to do so because of their language, attitude, and general demeanor. Finding accurate statistics on the amount of traffic citations issued per year in the U. S. is difficult due to the various ways courts track offender information. Some estimates have it as low as 40 million citations per year. Other figures point to the amount being closer to 56 million per year. The first figure did not prove the information, and the second figure only accounted for state courts. In my opinion, when you figure in the municipal courts, which account for the majority of traffic citations, the number is easily closer to 70 million, if not higher. Contrary to popular belief, most departments only see a fraction of the money generated from the citation fines and departments having citation quotas has been illegal since the early 80s. In my entire career, I have never been pressured to produce tickets or given a set amount I needed to write. All that being said, there are definitely some things that drivers can do to possibly avoid having a citation issued to them during a traffic stop.
Just say no

The only foolproof, guaranteed way to get out of a ticket is to not violate the law. I have read several of these types of articles written by regular guys who do not understand how the law and cops work and they always forget to give this advice. If you are not breaking the law, then you cannot be charged with violating the law (legally, that is). There are some cases where citations are issued that should not have been; due to officers being human and susceptible to making mistakes just like anyone else. But for the most part an officer is never going to issue a citation that he does not believe he can win in court and that he is justified to do so. I will elaborate on some of the misconceptions of guilt or innocence at the end of the article.
Attitude is EVERYTHING
The absolute most powerful tool that any driver has in an attempt to avoid a citation is there attitude. Officers are human too and will respond according to the initial temperament and demeanor they encounter when they approach the vehicle. Arguing will get you absolutely nowhere and is almost a guarantee that you are going to get a ticket. The side of the road is an extremely dangerous place for officers and they are not going to spend extra time on a traffic stop debating the legality of the stop. If you as a driver feel you were unjustly given a citation, then the place for the argument is in the courtroom on your court date, not when an officer is exposed to oncoming traffic at high rates of speeds. Greeting the officer in a cordial way using his rank or just the title “Officer” goes a long way. Officers far too often deal with society at its worse and being greeted in a friendly way can restore an officer’s faith in humanity, which in turn is going to make him more compassionate. Regardless of what Hollywood says, the overwhelming majority of officers started in their profession to help people, not because of a power trip. It is perfectly acceptable to inquire as to why you are being pulled over, but do so in a friendly way. I can tell you from experience that as a cop, it is extremely difficult to give a ticket to a person who is being nice and honest with you. Treat officers the way you want to be treated and more times than not you will see the benefits of this immediately. In addition, do not forget that almost every patrol car today is equipped with audio and video recording equipment. This is not only for officer protection, but for citizen protection as well. Keep in mind that in the event you are given a ticket and wish to contest it in court, it is very possible that the video will be watched by everyone in the courtroom including the judge, jury (if there is one), and other defendants waiting for trial. So if you act like a crazed maniac spitting profanity and generally have a mean, combative attitude, then it will definitely be seen by the people determining you guilt or innocence. On the other hand, if you are cordial, well spoken, cooperative, and remorseful, then that will shine through as well and may work towards a favorable verdict.
R. E. S. P. E. C. T.!
Just like the old faithful Aretha Franklin tune, respect goes an extremely long way. I previously stated that most officers are in this line of work to help people, but there are a small minority of cops who are insecure and got a badge to boost their self –esteem and wield the power entrusted in them by the public in an overbearing way. Showing respect will help with these types of cops. Whether we like it or not, when an officer performs a lawful traffic stop on you, he is in authority over you and a small part of your fate is in his hands. Being respectful and deferring to that authority will help to quell the small minded need to bully by those few bad apples on police departments. It is always a good idea to keep your hands on the wheel and not to take your safety belt until the officer arrives by your window. This way there is no way he can unjustly accuse you of reaching for a weapon (which can lead to a search) or that you were not wearing your seatbelt (which can result in a ticket).
Hello, my name is Jack, and I’m a speeder.
The first step to beating a problem is admitting that you have a problem. If you know for a fact that you are in the wrong, then admit that and apologize. I have given warnings to people for extreme breaches of the speeding laws because they were honest and remorseful. Again, officers are human and they understand that there are mitigating circumstances for violating traffic laws. We all have moments where we space out, or lose track of what the speed limit is. Admitting that you made a mistake is not going to make you automatically guilty or make you less of a person. It is going to reiterate to the officer that you are human and humans make mistakes. Honesty is the best policy in this matter. If you are running late to a kid’s soccer game, then say so. Chances are the officer is a father or mother and can relate to this. If you are rushing to see a loved one who is sick or in the hospital, let the officer know he may give you a verbal scolding for placing yourself at risk, but chances are he’s just going to give you a warning instead of a ticket.
Tied Hands

There are numerous violations that are deemed extremely serious and could bring criminal and financial liability upon the officer and his department if he turns a blind eye. There are very few cops who are going to risk their livelihood, family’s security, and possibility of lawsuits in order to give a complete stranger a break. These violations deal with the most blatant violations of laws that protect the public safety. These high liability violations would include: driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while license suspended or revoked, operating a vehicle without insurance, operating a vehicle that has an invalid registration, and extreme violations of speeding, such as 30+ miles over the posted speed limit. In almost every incident of these types of violations, the officer is going to issue a citation and possibly place you under arrest no matter your protestations. The liability is just too high and the danger to others is too great. That does not means you should disregard the above suggestions because how the officers testifies in court or how the officer arrests you could be affected by the above suggestions. If you are facing these serious charges, it will benefit you much more for the officer to honestly be able to testify that you were respectful and cooperative.
Speeding Misconceptions
I want to touch on some misconceptions that drivers may have about whether they are guilty or innocent when it comes to speeding and other traffic violations. Believe it or not, officers are actually trained to visually estimate a vehicle’s speed within about 3-4 miles per hour with their naked eye and that is what they are testifying to, the laser or radar reading is just confirmation of the office’s observation. So chances are, that if an officer pulls you over for speeding, you were speeding (of course there are exceptions). The officer is looking at an individual car and then confirming its speed with speed detection devices. Just because your speedometer says you were not speeding does not mean that it is true. For a speedometer to be accurate it has to be calibrated every year and it can be thrown off due to changing the tires, higher or lower pressure in the tires, or debris in the tire rims or undercarriage of the vehicle. I have had people I have stopped honestly believe that they were not speeding because their speedometer told them that they were going a certain speed. Another misconception is that a person was not speeding because they looked down when they saw the officer and saw that they were going the speed limit. This can occur due to two explanations. With an officer using laser, they can obtain vehicle speeds in excess of 2500 feet and the officer can visually estimate your speed well before you see them and realize that they are running a speed detection device. The ranges of radar units are not as great, but still they reach out there pretty far. The other thing that I have observed is that when a motorist sees an officer, it is human nature to let off the gas or to activate the braking system due to classical conditioning that officers stop speeding cars. This happens many times whether the person is speeding or not. What I have seen is that a motorist will see me, slow down and then look down at the speedometer giving them a false representation of the speed they were actually going prior to seeing me. With regards to laser and radar detection devices (commonly known as fuzzbusters or radar detectors) for the most part, they are waste of your money. In many states they are illegal and just being in possession of one will cause you to receive a citation. The modern speed detection devices operated by police officers come equipped with a trigger mechanism that allows the laser or radar to be paused so that there is no light or radio waves emanating from the device; therefore they are not going to be picked up by the radar detectors. When an officer sees a vehicle speeding, they hit the trigger and by the time you here your detector go off, it is too late. Most officers I have worked with are under the impression that if they see a radar detector in a vehicle that is your “warning” and they will issue a citation for the speeding charge. The speed detection devices used by officers are extremely accurate and are checked for calibration before and after each shift and they are certified once a year. There is a huge misconception in the general public that an officer has to show you his radar or laser unit and that is absolutely not true. Having a driver exit his vehicle and come back to look into a patrol car is dangerous for the officer and the driver and to my knowledge; no court has ruled that officers need to show the speed on the unit. Most states just require that an officer check his radar for accuracy if requested to do so, but they do not have to show the driver the results and this is not required for the use of the laser due to its accuracy. The urban legends of placing pennies in the grill of your car, putting tinfoil in your hubcaps, or putting mirrors in the grill of your car will not affect the operation of the lasers or radars, it will just make your car make horrible sounds as they travel the roads which in all likelihood cause additional scrutiny from the police.
Final Thoughts and Advice
In summary, your attitude towards the officer is going to directly affect the outcome of the traffic stop, respect that is given often equates to respect being received, honesty is the best policy, and sometimes no matter what you are going to get a ticket. In the event that you do receive a citation and you want to contest it in court, make sure that you hire representation. I have only seen one or two regular laypersons win a traffic case by themselves in 16 years. For the most part, a layperson is not going to have the knowledge to testify correctly, cross examine effectively, or lay the foundation to introduce evidence properly. The most someone would be able to do on their own behalf is to speak with the solicitor or prosecutor about the possibility of entering a plea of nolo contendere (no contest) or having the fine reducing by attending a defensive driving class. Most officers are going to concentrate of citations that are safety violations that could cause physical harm, damage to property, or vehicle accidents. A person’s perception is their reality. You may have thought that you were not speeding or that you came to a complete stop at that stop sign, but in reality it is possible that your perception of that event is false. If you have concrete, unbiased evidence that you are innocent they by all means hire representation and fight the charge. I have never met an officer that wanted someone to be punished for something they did not do and even the best officer makes mistakes sometimes. But so do you, so make sure that what you remember is what actually happened, this way you don’t throw good money away on a court date.
Links
For more information of traffic safety follow these links: http://www.nhtsa.gov/ http://www.safercar.gov/ http://www.madd.org/ Originally published on Devtome and Steemit.
