| title | A beginner’s guide to IOTA |
| body | A beginner’s guide to IOTA What is IOTA? According to the IOTA website, IOTA is a revolutionary new transactional settlement and data transfer layer for the Internet of Things. It’s based on a new distributed ledger, the Tangle, which overcomes the inefficiencies of current Blockchain designs and introduces a new way of reaching consensus in a decentralized peer-to-peer system. This post should help those who are new to IOTA to understand how it is different than other cryptoassets like bitcoin. Similarities and differences from Bitcoin Bitcoin transactions are processed by miners in sequential groups called blocks. There is a limit to how many transactions can be processed in one block which has led to intense debates over how to scale Bitcoin. IOTA’s team aims to remove the need for blocks and allow for better scaling. In IOTA there is no concept of miners verifying network transactions like in Bitcoin or most other blockchains. Instead, for each transaction that occurs in IOTA, the transaction creator is required to approve two previous transactions on the network by doing some computational work. You can essentially think of the ability to transact in IOTA without fees as the reward for helping to secure the network. This lack of transaction fees in IOTA enables extremely small transactions referred to as nanopayments. Due to Bitcoin’s current network congestion, transaction fees can be relatively high (average transaction fee over $40 at the time of writing) which makes it impractical for small payments. IOTA’s team believes a prime use case for nanopayments is for internet-connected devices to conduct transactions with each other. In Dec 2015, the entire supply of IOTA was sold in a crowdsale that raised over $500,000 in bitcoin. Since the team didn’t premine any tokens (i.e. set aside tokens for themselves at the start), the community donated 5% of tokens to found the IOTA Foundation which focuses on development, research, and education to advance IOTA. Technology IOTA’s distributed ledger, the Tangle, is based on a data structure referred to as a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). For every transaction that occurs on IOTA’s network, the transaction needs to approve two previous transactions by conducting a small amount of Proof of Work for them. The premise is that as more transactions occur, the network will be able to scale faster since there are more verifications being performed in parallel. The Tangle in IOTA. Notice there is no sequential chain of blocks like in Bitcoin but rather each transaction refers to two previous transactions. Community concerns Since the technology is still in its early days, IOTA relies on a “Coordinator” run by the IOTA foundation to protect the network against certain attacks. The Coordinator serves as a checkpoint for valid transactions. Past issues involving the Coordinator being shut down, rendering the official IOTA wallet unusable for a few days, has led to criticisms of centralization in the network. The team states there are plans to remove the Coordinator eventually. In Aug 2017, a team at MIT published an article detailing their investigation into IOTA. The IOTA team developed their own cryptographic hash function which was discovered to have vulnerabilities involving different inputs hashing to the same output, which should never happen. The golden rule of cryptographic systems is “don’t roll your own crypto.” — Neha Narula (MIT Media Lab) Rolling your own crypto means creating cryptographic systems from scratch. This is dangerous because systems that haven’t been battle tested over a long period of time can contain major vulnerabilities. The IOTA team has since fixed this issue but their choice to roll their own crypto was a red flag to many in the crypto community. A member of IOTA’s team responded that this vulnerability was intentionally added to the code to protect against malicious groups copying their open source code. Whether this is true or not, the team’s reaction added to a growing list of concerns within the community. While the technology behind IOTA may be interesting, it is always important to do your research and due diligence before investing in cryptoassets. |

| title | History of Taj Mahal |
| body | History of Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal of Agra is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, for reasons more than just looking magnificent. It's the history of Taj Mahal that adds a soul to its magnificence: a soul that is filled with love, loss, remorse, and love again. Because if it was not for love, the world would have been robbed of a fine example upon which people base their relationships. An example of how deeply a man loved his wife, that even after she remained but a memory, he made sure that this memory would never fade away. This man was the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who was head-over-heels in love with Mumtaz Mahal, his dear wife. She was a Muslim Persian princess (her name Arjumand Banu Begum before marriage) and he was the son of the Mughal Emperor Jehangir and grandson of Akbar the Great. It was at the age of 14 that he met Mumtaz and fell in love with her. Five years later in the year 1612, they got married. Mumtaz Mahal, an inseparable companion of Shah Jahan, died in 1631, while giving birth to their 14th child. It was in the memory of his beloved wife that Shah Jahan built a magnificent monument as a tribute to her, which we today know as the "Taj Mahal". The construction of Taj Mahal started in the year 1631. Masons, stonecutters, inlayers, carvers, painters, calligraphers, dome-builders and other artisans were requisitioned from the whole of the empire and also from Central Asia and Iran, and it took approximately 22 years to build what we see today. An epitome of love, it made use of the services of 22,000 laborers and 1,000 elephants. The monument was built entirely out of white marble, which was brought in from all over India and central Asia. After an expenditure of approximately 32 million rupees, Taj Mahal was finally completed in the year 1653. It was soon after the completion of Taj Mahal that Shah Jahan was deposed by his own son Aurangzeb and was put under house arrest at nearby Agra Fort. Shah Jahan, himself also, lies entombed in this mausoleum along with his wife. Moving further down the history, it was at the end of the 19th century that British Viceroy Lord Curzon ordered a sweeping restoration project, which was completed in 1908, as a measure to restore what was lost during the Indian rebellion of 1857: Taj being blemished by British soldiers and government officials who also deprived the monument of its immaculate beauty by chiseling out precious stones and lapis lazuli from its walls. Also, the British style lawns that we see today adding on to the beauty of Taj were remodeled around the same time. Despite prevailing controversies, past and present threats from Indo-Pak war and environmental pollution, this epitome of love continuous to shine and attract people from all over the world. |

| title | Indian States Look to Launch Blockchain Land Registry Efforts |
| body | New details have emerged about some of the blockchain applications being pursed by state governments in India. Regional news source The Economic Times reports that the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are both exploring the use of the tech to digitally rework their land registries. In Telangana – with support from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) – state officials are looking to apply blockchain to the revenue department as well. Notably, the land registry project there – aimed at boosting transparency and reducing the incidence of document forgery – is expected to reach full production stage sometime in the next year. In a similar capacity, across Telangana's southern border, Andhra Pradesh is also working to integrate the tech into its civil supply database. According to the report, these databases store information of public subsidies and land records that often become targets of cyberattacks. Andhra Pradesh officials are said to be working with local startups in the country to build blockchain-powered services. Recent statements from an Andhra Pradesh government official suggest that there are some potential barriers to further adoption, however. NT Arunkumar, special representative for IT and Innovation for Andhra Pradesh's IT, took the stage during CoinDesk's Consensus 2017 blockchain conference last month. During a panel appearance, he called for more collaboration between authorities, especially in cases where national boundaries are involved. "body": "New details have emerged about some of the blockchain applications being pursed by state governments in India.\n\nRegional news source The Economic Times reports that the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are both exploring the use of the tech to digitally rework their land registries. In Telangana – with support from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) – state officials are looking to apply blockchain to the revenue department as well.\n\nNotably, the land registry project there – aimed at boosting transparency and reducing the incidence of document forgery – is expected to reach full production stage sometime in the next year.\n\nIn a similar capacity, across Telangana's southern border, Andhra Pradesh is also working to integrate the tech into its civil supply database.\n\nAccording to the report, these databases store information of public subsidies and land records that often become targets of cyberattacks. Andhra Pradesh officials are said to be working with local startups in the country to build blockchain-powered services.\n\nRecent statements from an Andhra Pradesh government official suggest that there are some potential barriers to further adoption, however.\n\nNT Arunkumar, special representative for IT and Innovation for Andhra Pradesh's IT, took the stage during CoinDesk's Consensus 2017 blockchain conference last month.\n\nDuring a panel appearance, he called for more collaboration between authorities, especially in cases where national boundaries are involved.\n\n\"There needs to be more cross-border orchestration,\" he said at the time.",

| title | Japan to Test Blockchain for Government Contract System |
| body | Japan is reportedly looking to integrate blockchain into its online systems for accepting government contract bids. According to Nikkei Asian Review, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, who oversees the Japanese administrative system and manages local governments, will test a blockchain-based system for processing government tenders in the fiscal year starting from this April through March 2018. In the tendering process, governments solicit bids for contracts from vendors, collecting a swath of information from those companies as they assess whom they'll award projects. Japanese officials want to see if blockchain can help improve the efficiency of existing processes by using the tech to connect the government offices that possess the required information. In this case, blockchain would form part of that back-end system for sharing data between agencies, if implemented. Japans's government procurement market amounts to more than $600bn annually – an amount worth 16.2% of the country's GDP, and 38.3% of its total public-sector expenditures – according to research from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The focus on procurement forms part of a broader strategy to incorporate the tech in e-governemnt systems, according to Nikkei. Future plans are said to include sharing some of the findings of the trial with private-sector partners. Japan isn't alone in testing this use case area. As CoinDesk reported earlier this month, the US General Services Administration is seeking prototype proposals in a bid to see how blockchain could improve its contract review process for IT vendors. |

The “Petya” ransomware has caused serious disruption at large firms including the advertising giant WPP, French construction materials company Saint-Gobain and Russian steel and oil firms Evraz and Rosneft. Infected computers display a message demanding a Bitcoin ransom worth $300. Those who pay are asked to send confirmation of payment to an email address. However, that email address has been shut down by the email provider. “We do not tolerate any misuse of our platform,” said the German email provider Posteo in a blog post. This means that there is no longer any way for people who decide to pay the ransom to contact the attacker for a decryption key to unlock their computer. “This is not an experienced ransomware operator,” said Ryan Kalember, senior vice-president of cybersecurity strategy at Proofpoint. The attack was first reported in Ukraine, where the government, banks, state power utility and Kiev’s airport and metro system were all affected. The radiation monitoring system at Chernobyl was taken offline, forcing employees to use hand-held counters to measure levels at the former nuclear plant’s exclusion zone. The food giant Mondelez, legal firm DLA Piper, Danish shipping and transport giant AP Moller-Maersk and Heritage Valley Health System, which runs hospitals and care facilities in Pittsburgh, also said their systems had been hit by the malware. WPP said in a statement that the computer systems at several of its subsidiary companies had been affected, adding that it was “assessing the situation and taking appropriate measures”. In an internal memo to staff, one WPP firm said it was the target of “a massive global malware attack, affecting all Windows servers, PCs and laptops”. It warned employes to turn off and disconnect all machines using Windows. Some technology experts said the attack appeared consistent with an “updated variant” of a virus known as Petya or Petrwrap, a ransomware that locks computer files and forces users to pay a designated sum to regain access. But analysts at cyber security firm Kaspersky Labs said they had traced the infections to “a new ransomware that has not been seen before”. The “NotPetya” attack had hit 2,000 users in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, France, Italy, the UK, Germany and the US, Kaspersky said. June 27, 2017 Last month’s WannaCry or WannaCrypt ransomware attack affected more than 230,000 computers in over 150 countries, with the UK’s national health service, Spanish phone giant Telefónica and German state railways among those hardest hit. Symantec cyber security experts said they had confirmed the ransomware in the current attack was using the same exploit – a program that takes advantage of a software vulnerability - as WannaCry. The exploit - called EternalBlue - was leaked by the Shadow Brokers hacker group in April and is thought to have been developed by the US National Security Agency. To spread within companies that installed the patch to protect themselves against WannaCry, the Petya ransomware appears to have two other ways of spreading rapidly within an organisation, by targeting the network’s administrator tools. It’s not yet clear how computers became infected with the ransomware in the first place, but it doesn’t seem to be through email as happened with WannaCry, said Kalember. Pictures circulating on social media on Tuesday of screens purportedly affected by the attack showed a message stating, “Your files are no longer accessible because they have been encrypted,” and demanding a $300 ransom in the Bitcoin digital currency. June 27, 2017 The attack affected all business units at Maersk, including container shipping, port and tug boat operations, oil and gas production, drilling services, and oil tankers, the company said, as well as seventeen container terminals. “We can confirm that Maersk IT systems are down across multiple sites and business units due to a cyber-attack,” the Copenhagen-based firm said on Twitter. “We continue to assess the situation.” The disruptions in Ukraine follow a rash of hacking attempts on state websites in late 2016 and a succession of attacks on the national electricity grid that prompted security chiefs to call for improved cyber defences. The country’s prime minister, Volodymyr Groysman, said the attack was “unprecedented” but vital systems had not been affected. “Our IT experts are doing their job and protecting critical infrastructure,” he said. “The attack will be repelled and the perpetrators will be tracked down.” In a bid to calm public fears about the attack, which temporarily shut down the country’s main airport and prevented travellers from using the Kiev metro, the authorities tweeted a GIF of a dog nonchalantly drinking tea in a room on fire. June 27, 2017 Deputy prime minister Pavlo Rozenko earlier tweeted a picture of a darkened computer screen and said the government’s IT system had been shut down. The state grid, Ukrenergo, said its system had been hit but power supplies were unaffected. The central bank said an “unknown virus” was to blame for the latest attacks. “As a result of these cyber-attacks, these banks are having difficulties with client services and carrying out banking operations,” it said in a statement. Ukraine has blamed Russia for previous cyber-ttacks, including one on its power grid at the end of 2015 that left part of western Ukraine temporarily without electricity. Russia has denied carrying out cyber-attacks on Ukraine. Nicolas Duvinage, head of the French military’s digital crime unit, told Agence France-Presse the attack was “a bit like a flu epidemic in winter”, adding: “We will get many of these viral attack waves in coming months.” The growing fight against cyber-attacks has seen protection spending surge around the world, with the global cyber security market estimated to be worth some £94bn ($120bn) this year – more than 30 times its size just over a decade ago. |

| title | WannaCry Ransomware |
| body | WannaCry: What is ransomware and how to avoid it What you need to know about 'WannaCry', the malicious software behind Friday's worldwide hacking attack. WannaCry encrypts your files and demands payment to regain access [Richie Tongo/EPA] Malicious software or "ransomware" has been used in a massive hacking attack, affecting tens of thousands of computers worldwide. Software security companies said a ransomware worm called "WannaCry" infected about 200,000 computer systems in 150 countries on Friday, with Russia, Ukraine, and Taiwan being the top targets. The hack forced British hospitals to turn away patients, affected Spanish companies such as Telefonica, and threw other government agencies and businesses into chaos. Cyber security researchers from Symantec and Kaspersky Lab have said that some code in an earlier version of the WannaCry software had appeared in programmes used by the Lazarus Group, which researchers from many companies have identified as a North Korea-run hacking operation. "This is the best clue we have seen to date as to the origins of WannaCry," Kaspersky Lab researcher Kurt Baumgartner told Reuters news agency on Monday. READ MORE: Global cyberattack alert as experts warn of more havoc Here is what you need to know about the software behind the global cyber-attack. How it works: WannaCry is a form of ransomware that locks up files on your computer and encrypts them in a way that you cannot access them any more. It targets Microsoft's widely used Windows operating system. When a system is infected, a pop-up window appears with instructions on how to pay a ransom amount of $300. The pop-up also features two countdown clocks; one showing a three-day deadline before the ransom amount doubles to $600; another showing a deadline of when the target will lose its data forever. Payment is only accepted in bitcoin. The ransomware's name is WCry, but analysts are also using variants such as WannaCry. A hacking group called Shadow Brokers released the malware in April claiming to have discovered the flaw from the US' National Security Agency (NSA), according cyber-security providers. How it spreads: Ransomware is a programme that gets into your computer, either by clicking or downloading malicious files. It then holds your data as ransom. Some security researchers say the infections in the case of WannaCry seem to be deployed via a worm, spreading by itself within a network rather than relying on humans to spread it by clicking on an infected attachment. A number of hospitals operated by Britain's National Health Service (NHS) were hit by the ransomware cyberattack, causing failures to computer systems [Will Oliver/EPA] The programme encrypts your files and demands payment in order to regain access. Security experts warn there is no guarantee that access will be granted after payment. Some forms of ransomware execute programmes that can lock your computer entirely, only showing a message to make payment in order to log in again. Others create pop-ups that are difficult or impossible to close, rendering the machine difficult or impossible to use. Where it has spread: Researchers with security software maker Avast said Russia, Ukraine, and Taiwan were the top targets of the attack, but dozens of other countries also reported system infections. James Scott, from the Washington DC-based Institute of Critical Infrastructure Technology, said ransomware emerged "as an epidemic" back in 2016. He said the healthcare sector was particularly vulnerable because of poor digital security knowledge. "The staff have no cyber-hygiene training, they click on phishing links all the time. The sad thing is they weren't backing up their data properly either, so that's a big problem. They should be doing that all the time," Scott told Al Jazeera. "Everyone's vulnerable right now because you're only as strong as your weakest link within your organisation from a cyber-perspective." What can you do to prevent infection: According to Microsoft's Malware Protection Center, here are the steps you should take to protect yourself against ransomware: - Install and use an up-to-date antivirus solution (such as Microsoft Security Essentials) - Make sure your software is up-to-date - Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments or emails from people you don't know or companies you don't do business with - Ensure you have smart screen (in Internet Explorer) turned on, which helps identify reported phishing and malware websites and helps you make informed decisions about downloads - Have a pop-up blocker running on your web browser - Regularly backup your important files WannaCry 'kill switch' On Saturday, a cybersecurity researcher told AFP news agency that he had discovered a "kill switch" that can prevent the spread of WannaCry. |
