| body | ***We went for twelve days; a long ride. Some' like 5000 miles. Down into the United States and back. We rode hard. So hard that there was nothing to comprehend; just live. Just be. Wind whipped, throttle happy. Only now do I begin to relay it. And relay it I do. Welcome.*** _________________________________________________________________________________________________ **Day 1 of 12** To leave the city, before 6 AM. To first light, coming. Some, some call it the dawning and that works well. We ride through landscapes, endless. We rode for 13 hours, and 500 miles. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ **Day 2 of 12** We woke in some damp green patch in a semi-arid desert in Washington. Artificial in grandeur, we woke to sprinklers drowning our tent. We ride through a strange blue-collar town, stop to drink cheap Mexican coffee from styrofoam cups. People look at the bikes. A large man opens a sliding window of some All-American diner, asks where we are from. We continue on. Up a hill and into Oregon. The plateaus and plains do come again. We ride through dips and swoops and long straight stretches. Sometimes I lose sight of him over a bend, only to find him again, and lose him over the next. "Eyes on the Prize," And I always find him again. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ **Day 3 of 12** Day three we make it to Idaho. The backs of cars say "Famous Potatoes"; that's the license plate slogan in Idaho. Around noon we stop for coffee. It is from the faded porch of a general store that we meet Cat + Duck. They too are on the road. They ride vintage Harleys. Duck rides a 1968 Electra-Glide; he has put over 400,000 miles on it. Cat rides a 1975 Super-Glide, she has put over 250,000 miles on it. Duck says: *We ride until they break. When they break I fix them. Then we ride until they break.* |

| body | In my wildlife ecology class last fall, I remember hearing of such rams whose horns have the unfortunate trait of growing towards their face, to the point of puncturing their skin and, later, skull. Last night, I had to opportunity to attend necropsies of both a roadkilled fox and the trapped carcass of a wolverine. It was fascinating in all it's gore; bright lights, bloody tables, and a very musky, metallic smell. The photo of this Stone's sheep skull happened to be near the lab. |

| body | **THE GANG SERIES** by M. Luna Cargo-Chernoff Frederic M. Thrasher’s 1927 publication of The Gang : A study of 1,313 Gangs in Chicago was the book in which I found not only the first punchcard, but also obtained the first images for my first series, 6 Degrees. It was in these pages that I got lost. For what Thrasher describes as ‘Gangland’ I liken to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside; the shadow of the city; a place that is, to me, one of great mystery and misery; darkness and light. DIE BIBEL, 2015 ________ *“…of railroads and factories, of deteriorating neighbourhoods and shifting populations, which borders the city’s central business district on the north, west, and on the south. The gangs dwell among the shadows of the slum. Yet, dreary and repellent as the external environment must seem to the casual observer, their life is to the initiated at once vivid and fascinating. They live in a world distinctly their own- far removed from the humdrum existence of the average citizen. It is in such regions as the gang inhabits that we find much of the romance and mystery of a great city. Here are comedy and tragedy. Here is melodrama which excels the recurrent “thrillers” at the downtown theaters. Here are unvarnished emotions. Here is also a primitive democracy that cuts through all the conventional and social racial discriminations. The gang, in short, is life, often rough and untamed, yet rich in elemental social processes signifiant to the student of society and human nature.”* ENTERPRISE NIGHTS (LOOKING OVER SUNDAYS), 2016 7″ BY 7″ INFRAME ________________ *“Across these turbid, sewage-laden waters lie the crowded river wards. In the drab hideousness of the slum, despite a continuous exodus to more desirable districts, people are swarming more than 50,000 to the square mile. Life is enmeshed in a network of tracks, canals, and docks, factories and breweries, warehouses, and lumberyards. There is nothing fresh or clean to greet the eye; everywhere are unpainted, ramshackle buildings, blackened and besmirched with the smoke of the industry. It is in this sort of habitat the gang seems to flourish best.”* JUNIOR VICE KINGS, 2019 7″ BY 7″ INFRAME _______ *“The quest for new experience seems to be particularly insistent in the adolescent, who finds in the gang the desired escape from, or compensation for, monotony. The gang actively promotes such highly agreeable activities as rough-house, movement and change, games and gambling, predatory activities, seeing thrillers in the movies, imaginative play, roaming & roving, exploration, and camping. The gang, moreover, stimulates the boy to an even greater craving for excitement. His adolescent interest in that which thrills becomes reinforced by habit; ordinary business and pleasure seems tame and dull in comparison with the adventures of the gang. Habituation to this type of life in adolescence goes a long way toward explaining behaviour in the young-adult gangs and even of the hardened gangster."* GOLD DUST(SOLD), 2017; *"When I first moved into the neighbourhood I met two brothers who took me one night with the rest of the gang- about 13 boys, eleven to twenty-two years old. We stayed out till nine, pitching pennies on the corner. They showed me their hang-up in a barn, where there was an electric light, and we began to stay out till two or three in the morning. We used to bring up pop and candy to eat, and play cards. It was a big room, with furniture and everything. The people had stored an old dining room set, a library table, a kitchen table, and an army bed up there. We had to go up a ladder, through a trap-door. It was lots of fun. It was not really a club, just a hang-out. On a corner we would pitch pennies and then it got to be quarters. I wanted to learn to play Stud-poker, but no one would teach me. Oftentimes we shot dice for pocket-trash. Sometimes when we were hollering and playing games, the flying-squad would chase us away. The horse-cop would run us like anything, but we were too fast for him. Then he’d throw his club and we’d throw it back again at his horse’s feet to make him prance. We’d call him “Old Mickey Cop.”"* INFAMY, 2017 7″ BY 10″ INFRAME _____ Man Rising (SOLD), 2015. *“The best time for the romantic exploits of the gang is at night. The night hath a thousand eyes, and they are all winking their invitations to boys to come out and play. Danger and adventure lurk in every dark corner. Opportunity for daring is increased a hundred fold. Under the mantle of darkness the gang can do its mischief and make its escape.”* HAPPENSTANCE, 2018 7″ BY 10″ INFRAME ____ **I was born and raised in Vancouver and in the span of two plus decades I’ve seen it change, extensively. Yet, the old ways of the city are not completely bygone. Still remaining are derelict brick buildings, desolate railyards, and leaning back alleyways. I walk downtown and feel it- something like nostalgia. The same nostalgia is evoked in pages of The Gang. I hope only to never lose it, this obscure feeling of familiarity for a time that wasn’t mine.** LUNA **THE GANG SERIES IS CURRENTLY SHOWING AT 265 EAST 2ND AVENUE, VANCOUVER B.C.** [M. | body | ***"The sun in California is like white wine and pine sap. It may be a temperate sun, but it has an ardent nature. If lifted my heart with a heady buoyancy and spiced the air with a resinous tan. It shone down on me loyally up the coast road from Los Angeles, beating at me from the concrete freeways, beckoning me from Pacific breakers, winking from wind stirred leaves and grasses. It followed me through San Francisco, bouncing off windowpanes and shining on long golden hair. It warmed the terracotta ironwork of the Golden Gate Bridge, flashed off the teeth of a toll collector, hurried me over he rain grooves and up the highway until, one hundred miles farther on, it came into its own among the forests and hills of Northern California. Where the hot cement gave way to cooler asphalt and the highway began to rise and fall and curve against the hillsides, the bike transformed itself from a running animal into a bird and leaned over to swoop and curl with the contours. Somewhere there, where the highway meets the river, I wound off to the right and flew in among the mountains, looping high up towards the sun and down again into a bowl of fertile land and golden sunshine."*** *Ted Simon, Jupiters Travels (1979)* I will never forget my first time in California. It was June 21st, summer solstice, and I had left Eugene, Oregon at 5 30, heading south on the I-5. And the I-5 was glorious that morning, with the soft green mountains bound in fog and haze and smoke, and, bombing down the I-5 that morning became ethereal, timeless. I watched the landscape change, the way landscapes will change when one covers vast distances at fast speeds. How many landscapes can one cover in a day? The answer seemed infinite, endless. And it was here that I first stopped for gas, and it was here that the sun really came-to. Everything was shimmery, that morning, and I was in bliss, pure bliss, knowing that I was on my way to someone I loved, still one-whole-state-of-California-away, but one-whole-state-of-California-away did not seem so far away, anymore. And everything did remain shimmery that day, and it began to get hot, and the pines were waving hello, and it reminded me of the interior of home, and Mount Shasta waved hello, and I was in California. and tucked into the tent in Hopland that night, on the summer solstice of my 21st year, I had fallen asleep in the new land of which I never thought I'd fall in love with,... but did. |

| body | **THE GANG SERIES** by M. I hope only to never lose it, this obscure feeling of familiarity for a time that wasn’t mine.** LUNA **THE GANG SERIES IS CURRENTLY SHOWING AT 265 EAST 2ND AVENUE, VANCOUVER B.C.** [M. | body | **THE GANG SERIES** by M. I hope only to never lose it, this obscure feeling of familiarity for a time that wasn’t mine.** LUNA **THE GANG SERIES IS CURRENTLY SHOWING AT 265 EAST 2ND AVENUE, VANCOUVER B.C.** [M. | body | Often I remember how it was. Evening came and when the heat died down and the cottontails came out I knew it was time. From there I would spin tires down the dirt road and create dust and from there I would ride through the mountains and to the Ocean. To the Ocean! How one could always feel the Ocean before it was seen- the hearty buoyancy of salted air. And with sand in my jeans and my sneakers without socks I would go back to the place from where I came, swooping namelessly to the sound of a dream from which there was no waking. |

| body | ***"The sun in California is like white wine and pine sap. And everything did remain shimmery that day, and it began to get hot, and the pines were waving hello, and it reminded me of the interior of home, and Mount Shasta waved hello, and I was in California. and tucked into the tent in Hopland that night, on the summer solstice of my 21st year, I had fallen asleep in the new land of which I never thought I'd fall in love with,... but did. |
