      "body": "With the massive rise of blockchain in 2017, we have seem a huge influx of scams, pump and dumps and poorly thought out projects. Today I will be highlighting what I believe to be one of the stupidest of all: UnityCoin by Onewed.\n\n**What is UnityCoin?**\n\nUnitycoin claims to be “a new digital currency for the wedding industry, targetting a 300 billion dollar global market”.  From their “whitepaper” (a slideshow of pictures), we learn that “to get Unity Coin in the hands of couples planning their wedding, we will use OneWed to distribute Unity Rewards to users. Signing up, making referrals, reviewing products, and other value-adding interactions will allow users to gain currency. From there, Unity Coin can be used as a method of payment for products and services they find from partner businesses, or as a gift to others”. \nWhy invest?\n“Tech will inevitably continue to disrupt and change the industry in revolutionary ways as social media once did. Blockchain technology, cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence are yet to make a unified appearance in the wedding space, and we believe Unity Coin is the next disruption”. in the wedding space, and we believe Unity Coin is that next disruption.\n\n**What is the roadmap?**\n\nPhase 1 is to research effective launch and marketing strategies (already done).\nPhase 2 is to integrate AI technology into OneWed and hire more developers.\nPhase 3 is to decentralize Unity coin through the launch of the Unity Foundation, a non profit that offers holders a “fair and neutral way to progress Unity Coin as a sustaining and valuable digital currency”.\nPhase 4 is to expand sales and promotion efforts to ancillary markets.\nHow will investor’s funds be allocated?\n10% Foundation Setup, 10% AI Research, 30% Development, 10% Reserve, 25% Global Marketing, 15% Local Marketing\n\n**This seems super cool, why is it a scam?**\n\nTo begin, UnityCoin has the issue that many new ICO’s do, which is that there is no clear purpose for using blockchain technology to achieve their goals. All of their goals (except decentralization but I will get to that) can be accomplished by just putting all their data in a centralized SQL server, which is what 99% of businesses already do to handle their data. It seems that at best, the developers do not understand the purpose of blockchain technology, and at worst (more likely in my opinion) they are just trying to ride the bandwagon of blockchain to suck in naïve investors.\n\nNext, it appears that the coin is completely centralized and premined, with 50 PERCENT of the supply allocated to the foundation for operating Unity Rewards. There is no transparency as to what the total supply of the coin, or even why it should have any value, especially considering the massive amount of the supply that is being held by the issuers. It seems to me like the foundation is just hoping that naïve investors bid up the price, and then the founders can distribute their tokens as rewards to their customers, essentially creating money out of nothing and using it as an incentive to their customers to grow their business.\nAnother big issue that I see is that 40% of the investor’s funds will be allocated to marketing. In my opinion, this shows that the company themselves realize the tech is not useful enough to propogate on its own merit, and needs a massive influx on marketing money so that they can shill their coin. This along with the 50% holding of coins by the foundation makes me seriously question the intent and direction of the company.\n\nNow, there is the issue of their “artificial intelligence neural networks for tagging and cataloguing photos”. While this could potentially be useful, I don’t see how it has any relation to their coin, and it seems like they are just siphoning investor’s money (10% of invested funds to AI) to try to develop this tech.\n\nFinally, and perhaps the stupidest in my opinion, is their Unity Foundation, “a nonprofit organization through which Unity Coin will be managed, executed, and updated. Unity Foundation will deploy Unity Rewards to support the overall ecosystem. Like most other cryptocurrencies, we believe that the decentralized model is the fairest form of governance because it is built on community support”. This just has so many glaring issues, first of all, why would anybody work for a nonprofit to develop and update a coin that is issued by a profit-seeking company. The company originally states that they will be the ones distributing rewards, but then states that the Unity Foundation is the one distributing rewards. If the rewards are given to customers of OneWed based on their usage of the platform, how and why would a nonprofit be in charge of this reward distribution? It just doesn’t make any sense. Another extremely bold claim regarding the Unity Foundation is that it will provide decentralization. While there is no information on how the blockchain is actually managed, all indicators point to it being a centralized private chain, so how can it be decentralized? How can the company allocate themselves 50% of the supply and handle rewards disbursements if it is decentralized? There is not even a single mention of “proof of stake” or “proof of work” in the “whitepaper”.\n\nI hope that this article has been entertaining or even educational, and maybe it will help you spot other dumb ICO’s and be vigilant to the common tricks that they use.
