| body | The word blockchain is being thrown around quite often these days, and deservedly so, since investors will jump at anything with “Blockchain” on it. For example, when Long Island Iced Tea added “blockchain” to their name, their stocks [soared](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-12-21/crypto-craze-sees-long-island-iced-tea-rename-as-long-blockchain) (… and eventually crashed backed down, obviously). So amidst all this chaos of blockchain this and blockchain that, what even is trustworthy anymore? Are there any projects which make real use of blockchain technology? Ladies and gents, allow me to introduce Sentinel, a decentralized VPN provider, and yes, it is also on the blockchain… Are you hooked yet? # Sentinel Desktop Client SENT have developed a desktop client which is available to download [here](https://github.com/sentinel-official/sentinel) It can be very much argued that Sentinel makes one of the best use cases of blockchain technology. A decentralized space where each computer, laptop, mobile or even cloud server can be recognized as a node. Sentinel’s technology also allows for monetization of any unused bandwith which is declared on the Sentinel network. However, why would Sentinel Group decide to develop such a dApp? Is there even a need for such product? On their website they list the following: * Protection against hackers, data aggregators and the Government. * Protection against any tracking software (cookies), which many websites devilishly use. * Protection against any type of hack attacks, whether it be DDOS, bot-net and something they call “node proliferation”. # Fighting Net non-Neutrality In a way, Sentinel’s technology is fighting against Net non-Neutrality, which has already been passed in the US. Net neutrality basically means “open Internet”, by scrapping this, companies will need to pay ISPs in order to gain access to greater bandwith. Through this, Internet giants will gain an even better foothold over their empires, while smaller start-ups will die out like the Yellow Pages. # Token Swaps With this, Sentinel really is setting themselves apart as the ultimate privacy platform. What’s the number one issue with purchasing so-called “privacy tokens”? That’s right, you need to buy them from exchanges. Now, most exchanges will require you to pass some sort of identification procedure, so they know that you are legit. Doesn’t this defeat the whole purpose of buying “privacy coins”? Sentinel found a work-around here, by allowing you to SWAP, yes, that’s right, SWAP your tokens directly on the SENT client. So far, only Binance Tokens (BNB), Ethereum (ETH) and PIVX are available for swapping. This, in my eyes is a genius feature, since all these tokens are based on the Ethereum blockchain anyway (apart from PIVX), they should naturally be inter-swappable. “But Lawrence, how does Sentinel just swap your tokens? Does the client have liquidity? Does it connect to exchanges?” Even better, my friend, Sentinel aggregates the prices of the two tokens that you are exchanging from all their available exchanges and offers you the most balanced exchange rate! Awesome! # Sentinel. No one will know you’re hodling. | body | In a world where the likes of Elon Musk and Google are starting to develop and actively work on self-driving cars, who will be there to solve one of the main problems the market for self-driving cars have? **The answer is simple: Roadly.** Roadly is a mobile application, or a dedicated device which actively and automatically creates HD-Maps in real-time, whilst you are driving. Many companies in the past have claimed that they had already developed and created prototype-cars which can already drive themselves. The truth is that all of these presentations and demonstrations took place on straight highways or very small areas. Some manufacturers are working on cars which can create the mapping themselves, using the car’s sensor. However, this results in a dilemma. Who will want to buy the self-driving car which does not function properly from the beginning? Already having over 500,000 downloads, Roadly has gathered a database of more than 3.5 million different road signs. This number is constantly rising as the database is being updated regularly. # Incentives *But what is it that will attract people to Roadly? What incentives are there for people to download and use this app over any other, similar application?* I’m glad you asked! Roadly is more than just a recognition and HD-Mapping software. Roadly offers dashcam features, ADAS warnings and (soon) more! Furthermore, the team behind Roadly is currently planning to move their project onto the blockchain. This means that the application will reward users with Roadly’s very own token, RDL as a form of appreciation for the user’s contribution to Roadly’s database. The team is still playing around with ideas, such as which blockchain would be best to use or how to ensure data-validity. This is indeed a very early look at a potentially huge and market-defining project. Don’t miss out! Join the discussion over on the telegram channel: https://t.me/roadly |

| body | An exchange is a marketplace where assets are traded. One famous exchange you probably know of is the New York Stock Exchange, which is one of the largest exchanges in the world, and it is centralized. # Centralized Exchanges _But what does that mean? Centralized?_ It means that orders of stocks or shares are routed to the NYSE, London Stock Exchange (LSE), or any other centralized exchange, and are matched with an offsetting order. This means that all orders are taking place in one specific “location”, as they are all routed through the same place. Say for example that you would like to purchase some Ethereum with your USD. In order to do so, you would need to transfer your funds (USD) to a centralised exchange (marketplace). After this, your USD would be converted by the exchange into Ethereum at the current exchange rate. Centralized exchanges are good, they are easy to access and use, and provide advanced tools and trading functionalities such as margin trading, stop loss and lending. _So what’s wrong with them?_ # The risks of centralized exchanges. Well, as it turns out, centralized exchanges pose a risk for your funds. Maybe you’ve heard of people losing their cryptocurrencies and bitcoins due to hacking attacks. Some people choose to keep their aforementioned purchased Ethereum — or Bitcoin — on exchanges, instead of transferring them to their wallets. This is mostly done for ease of access and for a quicker trade. Although this hacking and obtaining of others’ cryptocurrencies falls on the shoulders of those who kept their assets on the exchange, as well as the exchange itself, we cannot disregard that we live in a digital world where most people and platforms are not safe from hackers, that is, if the hacker really wanted to get in. _There is, however, one solution. **Decentralized exchanges.**_ # Tell me more A decentralized exchange is an exchange market which does not rely on third party services to hold one’s funds or assets. Here, trades are peer-to-peer (P2P), they occur directly between users, and the whole process is automated. So far there are two ways to go about this. One way is to create proxy tokens (an asset that represents either fiat or crypto currency). Another way is to use a decentralized multi-signature escrow system. This creates a “trustless” system, where one does not have to entrust their funds to a third party (such as a centralized exchange). When one makes a deposit of funds on a centralized exchange, they are essentially issued an IOU, which they can later trade back for assets. With a decentralized exchange, one is able to stay in control of their money, and therefore be safe from hacking attacks. Another advantage is that there is no disclosure of personal details, one can make trades anonymously using decentralized exchanges. These models are fairly new, and have yet to adapt the functionalities of centralized exchanges which have been around for a long time. Users might find decentralized exchanges not so easy to use, and will not have access to features such as margin trading and stop loss. ## Here are some already existing decentralized exchanges: **Waves Platform** (www.wavesplatform.com) already has an in-built DEX (Decentralized Exchange), where one can trade BTC, ETH, USD, EUR and Waves. **Bitshares** (https://bitshares.org/) is another crypto platform, which uses its own native currency BTS. **Kyber** is an up and coming exchange which promises “seamless payments from any token”. You can check their roadmap and details here: https://kyber.network **0x** (https://0xproject.com/) is another decentralized exchange which facilitates peer-to-peer exchanges of ERC20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. These trades are executed through Ethereum-based smart contracts. **Etherdelta** (https://etherdelta.github.io/#PPT-ETH) is yet another Ethereum-based decentralized exchange. |

| body | Initial Coin Offerings, or ICOs are potentially very profitable blockchain investments. Due to their popularization along with blockchain technologies, this article will attempt to give some insight into what ICOs are, and how they operate, as well as a few tips for those that don’t know much about them. ## Debunking ICOs An ICO, similar to an IPO, is when one invests their cryptocurrency into a blockchain project. This is very similar to crowdfunding, in the sense that ICOs require for people to believe in the project, and the product which they are trying to deliver. Now, you might've heard about something known as a whitepaper. This is, or at least should be a very detailed plan of how the product works, and how the company plans to bring it to market, scale it and produce it. ### _With the right resources, anyone can start-up an ICO._ Upon having sent the crypto, the investor will receive a certain amount of ICO coins, these are coins which back up the project. At first, these might be worth nothing. As the project gains traction and popularity, the coin will (hopefully) gain value. However, this is only possible if the coin directly serves a purpose to the project. For example, UnikoinGold is a cryptocurrency which is used on an eSports live-betting [website](http://unikrn.com). This token is purchased with fiat and used to bet on live eSports games. The token can also be used in exchange for virtual in-game “skins” which change the appearance of certain game elements. These goods also have real-life fiat value, but instead an easier crypto-alternative is offered on this website. Here we can clearly see how Unikrn is using their token directly on their already existing product. _One cannot simply create an ICO, create a token and expect it to gain value or be profitable… or can they?_ ## Avoiding Scams Turns out that some people actually do just create tokens out of thin air, publish their ICO and ask people to invest, and promise ROI precentages in the hundreds! This turned out to be profitable, as some people actually did invest in these scam ICOs, so more and more are popping up all over the internet. You might see these published on crypto-related forums such as https://bitcointalk.org, or on public crypto-related chatrooms on Slack or Telegram. _**Pro-tip: Don’t bite the bait.**_ One should always be wary of such scams, by being thorough with your research and retaining a certain degree of skepticism. First of all, let’s return to the aforementioned whitepapers. These should be examined very well, from the format and how good it visually appears, to the content that it actually displays. A well thought out plan should be in place, with a clear roadmap and goals for the team working behind the scenes. Second of all, one should also look at who is on the team. Do these people have credibility? Any academic or other achievements? Remember to stay critical. A good LinkedIn profile is always a good sign. And lastly, the product itself. Is it relevant? Do people NEED this? How many will be willing to adopt it, and how will it fare against its competitors, if any. What market does it target, and what is its target population? These are questions which are essential to any product. ## Okay so… Make me rich! I am, of course, not implying that you should start investing all your life’s savings into ICOs (although you might get lucky!). There is no guarantee that any of the money spent will ever make it back into your hands. An ICO is not an oven, where one puts their dough (money) and comes back to an expanded loaf of bread. The key word here is "investment". You should always invest in what you believe will take off, and what you believe will attract the masses. The right product at the right place and right time. In the same way that you would not start buying up stocks and shares of any random company, you should also not go around splashing money on any random ICO. Don’t invest more than what you can afford and keep your options open. Although this article might scare you off from investing into blockchain, the market is still in its infancy stage and there are many improvements to be made. The purpose of this article is to inform and warn people of the dangers that come with investing in ICOs, as well as ICOs in general. Wherever you may choose to invest, whether it is blockchain or the New York Stock Exchange, there will always be dangers you must be aware of. Do not let this article discourage you from investing in whatever project you may believe in, however, remember to stay critical. |

| body | Recently you might’ve heard about “inflation”, but what on earth is “deflation”? This article will explain that and explore why Bitcoin might be a better monetary unit than the ones existing today.
Inflation
First let’s dive into inflation. Inflation happens when a currency is devalued, or depreciated. This means that one’s currency, the asset used to purchase various “things” such as goods or services has experienced a decrease in value. For example: Today you can go into a store and buy a basket of various fruits. The total comes down to $4. The next day, after your $ (USD) has experienced inflation, you will go in and buy the same basket of various fruits, but this time you spent $5. When this is applied to a bigger scale, it has much more implications for a whole economy, than it does for you as a single consumer. First of all, inflation occurs when APL (Average Price Level) experiences a sustained increase. Let’s assume that unemployment is low. Firms in this case would have to “bid up” (increase) their wages in order to employ the remainder of the population. For a firm, its wages are its highest “expenditure” when producing goods, so an increase in wages would cause firms to pay more money to produce the same amount of goods as before. This means that the price of your goods will go up (so the APL will increase), or that the value of your monetary unit will go down (either way this means inflation), as companies are trying to maintain their level of profits. After a while of steadily increasing the price of goods, firms will start to lay off some of its workers, increasing unemployment and decreasing inflation.
The trade-off
This is known as the inflation-unemployment trade-off. When there is high inflation, the central bank will decide to raise interest rates (the rates at which people have to pay back money borrowed), making people and companies less likely to borrow money. This will decrease the overall demand for goods and services in an economy, as people will save more money. This fall in overall demand leads to lower inflation, however, since a fall in overall demand also means a fall in Real GDP, firms will employ less workers in order to “cut their losses”, leading to lower inflation, but higher unemployment. Why should I care? You definitely should care. The Federal Reserve, which prints the US Dollar, is (probably) constantly printing money in order to give to the US Central Bank, in exchange for debt. As the pool of money in an economy increases, the value of the amount of money you hold in your bank account will decrease over time. The amount of money you now hold, relative to the total amount of money in that economy is lower. This is caused by inflation, as your purchasing power has gone down. In order to combat this inflation, the interest rates will be set higher by the Central Bank, and firms will start firing people, creating unemployment! Here you can see for yourself the inverse relationship between Inflation and Unemployment in the US.
The solution? Bitcoin
Created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009, and having only ever supplied 21M of them, Bitcoin will never experience inflation due to “printing”. Instead it will experience the exact opposite; deflation. As the pool of existing Bitcoin gets mined, and as more people buy Bitcoin, we should see its value appreciate over the next years. Currently, there are 16 million Bitcoins in circulation, with 5 million left to mine.
But why does its value increase?
In the same way as the USD and all other currencies pegged to it decrease in value due to printing, as explained before, due to the total pool of money in the economy having increased. In Bitcoin’s case, as the total pool of Bitcoin decreases since it is being mined, the worth of what is left un-mined will increase. Having and holding onto bitcoin still is profitable! Even though we are constantly reaching a new ATH (all-time high), and this is due to the amount of BTC left to be mined.
What happens when all the coins are mined?
You might be wondering. This, I cannot say with certainty, Satoshi Nakamoto has not disclosed any information on what would happen afterwards, and we can only speculate on this matter. Currently, miners make profit from the transaction fees gained. They use very powerful hardware such as GPUs and CPUs to solve some very hard mathematics, which is why we call it “mining”. The hardware is doing the “physical labour”. After having solved these mathematical problems, transactions are able to go through and be registered on the blockchain. Due to their efforts, the miners are awarded a small fee, which is how they are able to make money. So when all coins are mined, how will miners be able to even make profits? Will there even be any miners left to help transactions process? At first the answer seems simple: no, miners will simply just vanish as Bitcoin mining will become unprofitable due to electricity costs outweighing the transaction fees gained. One solution to this might just be increasing transaction fees, in order to keep miners interested in giving their processing power so that we, as users of Bitcoin can process our transactions. As mentioned before, this is something which yet has to be established, and there is nothing but speculation out there as of now. However, if we are capable of creating things such as cryptocurrencies, digital ledgers and even the internet, this should be nothing but a pebble in Bitcoin’s path to global adoption. |

| body |
Waves is a decentralized, open blockchain platform which is easy to use and can be adopted by anyone.
Created and founded by Sasha Ivanov in the Summer of 2016, Waves presents the public with many possibilities. The Initial Coin Offering (ICO), or crowdfunding, raised more than 29,000 BTC compared with the 31,000 BTC raised by Ethereum back in 2014. How? Waves allows anyone to create and distribute their own crypto-token, making crowdfunding of blockchain-related projects easy and simple. Using the Waves platform you will also find embedded a Decentralized Exchange (DEX) which allows peer-to-peer trading from within the client. This was one of the big targets in the WAVES roadmap, which was implemented in April 2017. So what? Sasha Ivanov, founder of Waves has said in many interviews that he plans on working on the platform all while being transparent. So far, he has delivered on many on his promises for the Waves platform and community, which by the way is very tight-knit and very good at one thing: “HODL”. Many of the early adopters of waves are there because they saw the opportunities and possibilities which the platform has to offer, even though there were nay-sayers and people who thought it would never lead anywhere. Let’s get back on track, however. What else can this platform offer? Remember how we were talking about the DEX? Well, recently the platform added one more gateway to the already existing list of BTC, EUR and USD, and that gateway is ETH. This means that the waves wallet can now be used to store ETH tokens, and that ETH tokens can also be used in the DEX to buy any waves-based token, bitcoin, euros and US dollars. The next target for the DEX is to add a CNY gateway, which I am sure needs no explanation as to what this means for the platform. Furthermore, it has recently been announced that the Russian National Settlement Depository (NSD), the central depository for the largest exchange group in Russia is working on developing a blockchain platform to provide deposits and settlements for cryptocurrencies, which is, you guessed it, in partnership with Waves Platform. While this poses some legislative issues, Sasha Ivanov’s work does not go unnoticed. He is actively working on, and promoting the platform, which is nothing but good news and future expectations. Are waves mine-able? Shortly answered, no. One cannot “mine” waves in the traditional way that Ethereum or Bitcoin can be mined. Rather, the Waves Platform brings something new to the table called Leased Proof of Stake (LPoS). In this system, a user can choose between being a full node, and using the mining power provided by other users to clear transactions faster and more efficiently, orusers can choose to lease their mining power (without actually leasing their assets, meaning there is no real risk for doing this) in order to receive transaction fees, without having to run a full node. Future of waves We can expect the waves token to break its current ATH (All-Time High) by the end of 2018, as many waves-based ICOs are coming up and many improvements for the Waves Platform itself, such as a new GUI for the DEX and new gateways. If you are a day-trader, Waves is probably not for you; however, if you are looking for a long-term holding coin, this is probably a safe asset to invest in and wait. |
