And why be kind to yourself?</p>\n<p>The simple answer is: because you can.</p>\n<p>And the more complicated answer?</p>\n<p>Because you should.</p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"/>\n<img src=\"https://luweetang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/crescent-4875339_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5153\"/>\n<p>The world is such a big place, yet at times, I find myself stuck in my own mind, replaying all the mistakes I made. The paths I missed. The things I don't have yet. What I am not yet (or won't ever be). The people who hurt me. The words they said. What I cannot change (but wish I could). The things that are bad about me. What I'm not good at yet.</p>\n<p>You've been here before too, probably.</p>\n<p>It's an easy trap to fall into. If you don't stop it, you will build a prison for yourself with your mind, locking you in a dark place, never allowing you to grow out of it.</p>\n<p>The solution is to do the opposite: instead of dwelling on your mistakes, what you're not good at, what you don't have, the words that hurt you, the people that disappointed you... you can be kind to yourself.</p>\n<p>Let go of what you can't change.</p>\n<p>Let go of people who don't want to stay in your life.</p>\n<p>Let go of the criticism you received.</p>\n<p>Let go of hurt.</p>\n<p>It's okay if you don't have what you have wanted all your life.</p>\n<p>It's okay to be number two, number ten, or, last.</p>\n<p>It's okay if you don't have money.</p>\n<p>It's okay if you aren't in a job you love.</p>\n<p>You are okay exactly how you are.</p>\n<p>Accept what you can't change.</p>\n<p>See the good in yourself every day.</p>\n<p>Don't bring your mistakes from today to tomorrow.</p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"/>\n<p>Be kind to yourself, because you can.       "body": "<center>https://luweetang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/stupid.png</center> <br/><p>There are always six types of students in any classroom - the smart and popular, the pretty and popular, the social butterfly, the class clown, the average, but well-liked and then, someone like me: the stupid, strange and unpopular.</p>\n<p>At least, that's how I felt for the first six years of school. I couldn't spell. I couldn't add. I couldn't subtract. I couldn't divide. I couldn't form proper sentences. Naturally, my entire report book was full of red.</p>\n<p>Even after switching tuition teachers three times, I still ended up number two... from the bottom. For four years straight. I started getting used to being last.</p>\n<p>\"I've tried my best, but your daughter is pretty bad,\" my tuition teacher told my mom, \"I think she's not trying.\"</p>\n<p>But I was. I was trying very hard. At least I thought I was.</p>\n<p>Of course, I got a scolding from my mother that night. It didn't help though, my grades came back the exact same the next time around.</p>\n<p>\"This is just a simple division,\" my math teacher would tell me, \"why can't you do it like your sister?\"</p>\n<p>I didn't have an answer. I simply didn't how to do it.</p>\n<p>I started to think, <em>maybe... maybe I'm just one of the stupid ones. So, no matter how hard I tried, it didn't matter. Stupid people can't do maths.</em></p>\n<p>I saw it in the eyes of my teachers, and my classmates, saying to me, <em>Tang Lu Wee, you are just not good enough.</em></p>\n<p>So I gave up trying. I slept through my classes and handed in empty homework. </p>\n<p>There was no point. Everyone thought I was dumb, so why even try?</p>\n<p>I hated going to school. Every day, I asked my mom, <em>Can I just stop going to school? I really don't like it.</em></p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"/>\n<img src=\"https://luweetang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/galaxy-4828098_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5141\"/>\n<p>There is a happy ending to this story.</p>\n<p>I ended up graduating A levels with straight A's and university with first-class honours.</p>\n<p>If you told the primary 1 Lu Wee that she would one day become a top student, Lu Wee would have probably ignored you. She believed she was destined to be stupid. Always number two or three from the bottom.</p>\n<p>And she would have continued believing this if not for <a href=\"https://luweetang.com/teacher/\">this one teacher</a> who made her feel like her life was worth more. I saw my teacher's magic happen again and again.</p>\n<p>An F student would get a B after 1 or 2 months. Sometimes an A. Nothing changed. The only thing that was added into their life was a purpose, meaning and encouragement.</p>\n<p>I realised then that there are never really \"stupid\" students, just students who needed some help and encouragement.</p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"/>\n<p>If you know a \"stupid\" kid in your life, don't give up on them. Encourage them and be kind to them.       "body": "<p>I once stood in the middle of a busy street in Taipei and thought myself, look at how busy everyone is, but here I am, on a vacation. I have so many free hours and they haven't got even a minute to spare.</p>\n<p>I was 19 or 20 then.</p>\n<p>I had so much time for doing nothing.</p>\n<p>Yet, three months ago, at 30, I found myself in a place where doing nothing felt like a luxury. I had no time for it.</p>\n<p>I realised soon enough though, I couldn't afford not to have time for it.</p>\n<p>It was costing me my health.</p>\n<p>My blood pressure had risen up above 130.</p>\n<p>In trying to grow my business in the last 2 years, I had taken my health for granted.</p>\n<p>And for what?</p>\n<p>I can't take anything from this world away with me when I die.</p>\n<p>So I started meditating, swimming, working out, being patient, being kind... as much as possible.</p>\n<p>A lot of people have told me, well you look slimmer now.</p>\n<p>It's always nice to hear that, but all I wanted was to keep my blood pressure low.</p>\n<p>Today is pretty nice for me. I haven't had a full weekend for myself in almost a month. But I have been quite busy in 2019.</p>\n<p>I've been wanting to write more fiction this year, but things took a very different turn as the year progressed. </p>\n<p>My businesses started to grow a lot faster than I anticipated. I lost my work-life balance for a little bit and started working 14 - 16 hour days for a few months. In some months, this included weekends too.</p>\n<p>I've since dialed back and now work around 60 hours a week.</p>\n<p>There's no heroism in working more hours. So I'm hoping to cut my 60 hours down some more and spend more time completing my fiction.</p>\n<p>I'm not complaining though. It was a good problem to have. I needed growth.</p>\n<p>It's December and things have calmed down now. I have more time to write, read, do nothing.</p>\n<p>This year, things improved dramatically at home. I have better relationships with my family.</p>\n<p>What bad things happened this year?</p>\n<p>I can't remember them.</p>\n<p>Maybe I don't need to remember them. </p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"/>\n<p>2020 is coming in 3 weeks.</p>\n<p>Am I prepared?</p>\n<p>I don't know.</p>\n<p>I'll be 31 in less than 2 months. I have this idea that I should somehow be alarmed. But I'm alright. I'm neutral.</p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"/>\n<p>Now, my hopes for 2020.</p>\n<p>From me to other people:</p>\n<p>More kindness. More thoughtful speech. Less judgment. More consideration. More tact.</p>\n<p>More patience. More love.</p>\n<p>For myself:</p>\n<p>More time for writing fiction. More time for swimming.
