| title | Forever Young - A Father's song to his daughter on her wedding day |
| body | https://youtu.be/0yhr1Qo-rsU You never really know when one of those incredible and special moments in life are to occur. Certainly, our family was so looking forward to my daughter's wedding day, a year and a half in planning, and it was everything we had hoped for. What only my wife and son knew though was that I had planned to perform a song for her and my new son-in law as a tribute to their upcoming life together from their most cherished grandparents, who all unfortunately have passed. Not a professional musician by any stretch and I nearly bailed on the idea during the few days before the event. Why should I perform in front of nearly 200 people? It wasn't my hour. It was their's. But I decided to do it. My speech was to be the last of the group of speakers, and the room, as always, tends to get a little antsy listening to everyone's words. Especially because the bar is closed during the speeches. However, the 7 speeches presented were short and clever and everyone seemed to enjoy. I stood by my wife as she spoke and then I pretended to walk away with her when she was done. Just for a second. Then I returned and gave a few words and told everyone that the lyrics to this special Dylan song spoke to me and that I thought I wanted to share it with them. I then stepped on stage with the band, who graciously provided a tuned guitar and great sound balance, and I began to play. I believe the room was in a bit of shock, not knowing if this was a joke or for real, but you could hear a pin drop. As evidenced by my daughter running up to the stage afterward, it was one of those incredible and special moments. |

| title | Forever Young - A Father's song to his daughter on her wedding day |
| body | https://youtu.be/0yhr1Qo-rsU You never really know when one of those incredible and special moments in life are to occur. As evidenced by my daughter running up to the stage afterward, it was one of those incredible moments. |

| body | Does It Get Any Better Than This? As collectors look for the ultimate pieces to add to their collections I find it refreshing sometime to look around and see what the field looks like and what the markets are saying. The markets do talk you know. You just have to listen. Over the last few years two Inverted Jenny's, the rare 1918 U.S. postage stamp that was accidentally printed upside down fetched $825,000 and $977,500 respectively. WOW! http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Y-UPXVpQSdA/R3-yxRws-QI/AAAAAAAAAC8/aWf6YC0RnQI/s200/200px-Inverted_Jenny.jpg While I have great appreciation for all rarities, I am still amazed at how out of sync markets can become. This stamp is one of a hundred that were printed in error, but it has no real historical significance. It is just rare and very cool. When I consider so many other rarities with incredible stories, provenance, significance and history that sell for multiples less than the Jenny, I get all excited and motivated and want to go on a spree and acquire everything. Yes, the sale of these two stamps caused me to reflect on what I would collect and go after aggressively. As all of us know, when there is no urgency, we tend to be exceptionally selective and hesitate to spend even a few dollars more to get something great. But, when I see sales like the Jenny occur, it makes me think again. Great things are great things, and the opportunities to acquire most of them are fleeting. I am re energized. EYE CANDY ALERT! http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Y-UPXVpQSdA/R3-1chws-UI/AAAAAAAAADc/0Jpa33rFa00/s400/1792+Half+Disme.jpg If you are still confused by my comments consider this - The 1792 Half Disme pictured above is the very first officially sanctioned United States coin ever struck. George Washington himself ordered the coins to be made and they were authorized under the Coinage Act of 1792, the same Act that authorized the building of the first U.S. Mint, the Philadelphia Mint. The urgency to have these coins produced required that they be struck in a basement of a Philadelphia saw maker, down the street from the Philadelphia Mint because the Mint was not yet finished. Only 1500 of these incredible coins were struck and the silver used to produce them was provided by George Washington himself. Thomas Jefferson personally retrieved them when they were finished and he was the one to deliver them to Washington. It is believed that the image of Liberty on the coin obverse was modeled after Martha Washington. The coins are referred to in Washington's 4th annual Presidential address in 1792. The coin's legend, "LIBERTY - PARENT OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY" is representative of everything our great country was to stand for. As John Adams explained, We (the Founding Fathers) spent our adult lives fighting for freedom and liberty, so that our children would have the freedom to pursue whatever their dreams and passions were. Can I get an Amen? It is believed that there may be 200 to 300 surviving examples of this coin, and most are in very low grade and damaged condition. They were meant to circulate and indeed they did. Many have holes in them so they could be worn and many are just plain excessively worn. However, Very Fine examples can be found in the $150,000 range. The finest known sold in 2006 for $1,322,500. So nice examples can be found in between these two numbers. I think I would rather have one of these in top grade for $850,000 than an error printed postage stamp. But, that is just me. |

| body | How Do I Begin? Putting serious money into rarities is not for everyone. It is a concept for persons with passion and you either have passion or you don’t. O.K., so you say you have some passion, now what? Well, what do you like, what do you enjoy, what time in history excites you, who are some historic figures that pique your interest, what are some events that really grab your attention? These are the questions to answer before going any further. Sure, you can take someone’s recommendation as to what would be best to buy for capital appreciation, but likely that opinion is based upon that person’s passion, not yours. Come on, there has to be something or someone you are interested in. Spend some time on this. There is no hurry. The great thing about answering this question is that you can strive to own something important from that answer. And that is important because if the rarity doesn’t happen to appreciate as expected it really doesn’t matter as much. Why? Because you have a passion for it and it enhances your life by living with it, seeing, it, touching it. It broadens you as a person because one of the benefits I have found from acquiring rarities is that it expands the urge to learn. You will want to learn more about the history surrounding your piece(s) because you now have a stake in them. I have clearly learned more about history since being involved with rarities than at any point in my schooling career. Note to self, side benefits. Once you have defined an area of real interest the hunt begins. Well, don’t just start buying everything to do with your topic because chances are that if you are interested in a great person or moment in history, so are many others, and likely, there are many, many items available that are associated, and most are inexpensive or unimportant. Lets take George Washington. If you are a fan of this great man, you might be satisfied with a one-dollar bill or a quarter coin and seeing his image upon them. There must literally be thousands of commemorative items with a George Washington theme, and that is how most people go astray. Think Beanie Babie syndrome. You need to focus your thinking. You are investing money, not buying a toy. When investing in stocks, a knowledgeable investor is going to calculate risks before buying shares. When he or she does decide to buy, it is when they believe the time or price is the best. No one would buy when they believe something will still be falling in price. So how can this be applied to rarities? First, buy the absolute best piece(s) that you can afford. Diversification doesn’t really apply. Concern yourself with the quality of an item. Junk never sells. Condition matters. Originality matters. I have found that no matter what economic environment we are in, the best of the best will always have a buyer. If you have a great and rare statue but the arm is missing, maybe not. So think, important George Washington. Well, personal items would be at the top of the list, but most if not all, are in museums. Original Documents as president or handwritten letters. Notable medals or coins that are attributed to Washington or his time, like the 1792 Half Disme which was purportedly struck using Washington’s own silverware, or the Washington funeral medals that were worn at one of the two funeral processions just after his death. Getting it yet? EYE CANDY ALERT! http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Y-UPXVpQSdA/Rzt2L82c9YI/AAAAAAAAACk/xJS40lahJ8k/s320/skullbonesobv.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Y-UPXVpQSdA/Rzt2S82c9ZI/AAAAAAAAACs/MLJe4kvtRr8/s320/skullbonesrev.jpg This wonderful Skull and Bones Funeral medal dates back to 1799 where it would have been worn at the February 1800 Masonic funeral procession in Boston in Washington's honor. Approximately 20-30 of them are known in silver and price in the $20,000-$30,000 range. One of two gold strikes of this medal sold within the last two years for approximately $250,000. |

| title | Investing in Collectibles - Smart or Not? #2 |
| body | Popular Interest I can’t say enough about popular interest. It is the wild card that is always most challenging to try to figure. Trying to figure what people will consider the next most desirable thing is a lesson in futility. And when something is determined to be widely popular, it matters little if there are only a few or many, because demand will always be there. The $20 St. Gaudens High Relief gold coin is a great example. There is certainly no shortage of this coin. You can buy twenty of them tomorrow if you wanted. However, it has a beauty with a a seemingly magical power and even low mint state examples can sell in the $10,000-$40,000 range. That’s pretty good money for something readily available. Or, how about a silver Apollo 11 Robbins Medal that was flown aboard man’s first moon landing? There were 440 of those flown and recent public sales have fetched in the $30,000 + range. Compare that to an Apollo 12 silver Robbins Medal, the second manned lunar landing that had only 262 medals flown that can usually be had for between $7,000 and $10,000. Logic does not always prevail and economic theories applied to rarities and collecting are a waste of time. EYE CANDY ALERT! A very rare set of silver George Washington boot or shoe buckles from the 1789 inauguration. Each has two engraved busts of Washington. Estimated value is $20,000 - $30,000. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Y-UPXVpQSdA/R0IIlrT3Q5I/AAAAAAAAAC0/F1TLmKPQy5E/s320/Washingtonbuckles.jpg Popular interest is what draws the multitudes to something. But, as collectors and maybe even investors, we try to determine what is the best of the popular? Once you get the knack, you get an instinctive feeling when you see something that you just know is great. Take the Beatles for instance. They probably rate a ten out of ten in terms of popular interest. Unfortunately, there are tens of thousands of Beatles things. Where do you start? How do you begin to determine what is the best of the best of Beatles memorabilia? Right! An item that was personally owned by any of the Beatles; especially instruments or recognizable clothes that were worn, like John Lennon’s famous army shirt. Handwritten lyrics, letters, drawings, or all four autographs on a single item would all qualify as top-notch and very desirable items. You are catching on. I remember being in Atlantic City years ago at the Atlantique collectibles show and a dealer put out a NEMS signed contract (The Beatles marketing company) by all four Beatles and Brian Epstein. The signatures were all tens and the price was $10,000. It seemed high but the item was absolutely top-notch. Today that document would be $25,000 plus. I had the feeling just not the guts to pull the trigger. Confidence comes with experience. As a rule, popular interest takes about twenty years to prove that it is not just a fad and is indeed here to stay in a culture's long-term consciousness. I wouldn’t buy into things today that seem to be “hot.” Today things are different because people are always on the prowl looking for the next hot thing, which means to me that the next thing will not be obvious. We live in a bubble today and when I see 7-year-old children carefully removing a Pokemon card to get it into a plastic protective sleeve, well, let me tell you, it ain’t going be worth a damn in 5, 10, 20 or even 50 years. There will be 50,000 of these in mint condition in 50 years. Common sense and a little logic is all that is needed to figure that one out. Just remember, when you see something you like, consider its place in the world and its likely appeal. Then do a mental check of how it would rate among a top list of items from its theme. Step back and look at it again. Does it pass the cool test? Is it really great, really unique? If it is, you likely can’t overpay for it, and likely someone will always want it. |

| title | Investing in Collectibles - Smart or Not? #1 |
| body | Investing in Collectibles! Some 20 years ago, it was found out that one of Wall Street’s most esteemed firms had been keeping a performance index on rare US coins. The news was very controversial at the time. The fact that a well-respected Wall Street firm gave credibility to holding rare US coins as part of an investment portfolio was unthinkable. After all, coins and coin collecting was a hobby and surely nowhere to invest serious money. It takes time for society to accept and get comfortable with new ideas. There was a time when stocks were considered wild-eyed speculations suitable only for speculators and the very rich. Today, most employed people in the US have some money invested in stocks for future growth and appreciation. And although today we take investment in stocks for granted, it is an amazing statistic that only about 20% of the public had investments in stocks 10 years ago. And today, still only about 50% of the public has some investment in the stock market. This statistic says alot! Consider that investment in stocks has been available for more than a hundred years and up and until 10 years ago, not more than 20% of the population owned any. It has taken a long time for society to finally become comfortable holding stocks as viable investments, believing them to be reliable and good stores of value over long periods of time. Well, it may be that the next revolution is underway. More and more, people are becoming comfortable investing serious money into tangible collectible objects, believing that their scarcity and desirability will make them ever more valuable as time goes on. As they say, “They ain’t making anymore of them” or “They sure don't make ‘em like they use to.” Is the world ready for legitimate investment in something other than stocks and bonds? If we use the stock market as a reference, it may very well take a long time before the idea gains wide spread acceptance. This argument has certainly been oversimplified to make a point, but there are clear signs that the evolution is underway. Collecting has been around forever, but the foundation of taking it to the next level, has been building strongly over the last 30 or 40 years. The founding fathers of collecting unknowingly started the next growth spurt by compiling the data and history of their particular specialties and passions. Notice how the section on collecting in the bookstore has grown from a one shelf area to an entire devoted section. You can find information on just about any collectible subject. Can the public get comfortable placing $10,000 or $20,000 in a Tiffany lamp believing that the potential exists for a respectable rate of growth in its value over a long period of time? There are more people today than ever before that believe just that. As with everything, a trend has to begin somewhere. We’ll have to see if the belief broadens out and is sustainable. Again, it takes time for the comfort factor to sink in. What is behind this new thinking? Certainly the booming global economies of the last two decades have contributed greatly because of the increased level of disposable income available to many people, which has clearly created a heightened interest in rarities and collectibles among a greater demographic. There is more money circulating in the world today than in the entire history of the world and it is spread out among more people than ever before. We also hear about the great Baby Boomer demographic and its great influence. They represent the largest and wealthiest segment of society, and are not products of the Great Depression era, which is a very important psychological consideration. The Depression era mind set is one of saving every penny and spending money only on necessity. The Baby Boomers have money and disposable income and they want to spend it. Ironically, there is also great stress in this revolution. Change is so rapid in our society and becoming even more so that the ability to adapt to this change creates stress and uneasiness. So, in search of some comfort and security, the boomers are finding that familiar relics from their youth can rekindle fond and secure memories that serve to comfort. These people from the world of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, are appreciative of the quality and craftsmanship from the old world before technology. For some, there is comfort in seeing that old Howdy Doody doll, driving that vintage mustang, or feeling the quality and craftsmanship of fine vintage furniture. One of the big ironies of today is that the technology itself has become the craft or art of the period. Not music, nor art, nor architecture. The technology itself has become the highlight of our era. Craftsmanship on a broad scale today is horrible. Some can argue that there is no craftsmanship or pride. In fact, if you do desire anything of quality, made like the old days, you have to search out the small independent craftsman to create it for you. Today’s is truly a throwaway society. Most all goods are knock-offs of old day originals. Creativity is at a low. As a collector, I can’t remember when I put something contemporary away for future sake because of its originality, beauty and quality. I believe that in large part, because of this argument, many people today are rekindling their affections for the simpler days past. The argument is intense and can go in many directions. One of the more popular tangents follows the idea that technology, in all of its glory, created to simplify our lives, has indeed made it more stressful. We can all acknowledge that technology has been helpful in reducing many of the mundane daily chores, but it has also sped the pace of living beyond a comfortable level. PCs, pagers, faxes, cell phones, cable TV. Can you escape? And the rate of change is uncomfortable. The decision making process has become more difficult due to the fast rate of change. Do I buy a PC today because it may be outdated in six months? Which phone service is best; cellular, digital, satellite? Much of technology has created a great uncertainty and insecurity among society, especially among the key economic drivers of the world, the Baby Boomers. Where does this end? The evolution is and will continue without many even conscious of the fact. Maybe bringing this debate to light will alert more and more people to the idea of investing a small percentage of their disposable or investment money into something tangible that they can enjoy every day of their lives and have the opportunity to have it grow in value over time is an acceptable and rational idea. "title": "Investing in Collectibles - Smart or Not? #1",
"body": "Investing in Collectibles!\n\nSome 20 years ago, it was found out that one of Wall Street’s most esteemed firms had been keeping a performance index on rare US coins. The news was very controversial at the time. The fact that a well-respected Wall Street firm gave credibility to holding rare US coins as part of an investment portfolio was unthinkable. \nAfter all, coins and coin collecting was a hobby and surely nowhere to invest serious money. \nWell, it may be that the next revolution is underway. \nCollecting has been around forever, but the foundation of taking it to the next level, has been building strongly over the last 30 or 40 years. Again, it takes time for the comfort factor to sink in.\n\nWhat is behind this new thinking? \n\nCertainly the booming global economies of the last two decades have contributed greatly because of the increased level of disposable income available to many people, which has clearly created a heightened interest in rarities and collectibles among a greater demographic. There is more money circulating in the world today than in the entire history of the world and it is spread out among more people than ever before. \nWe also hear about the great Baby Boomer demographic and its great influence. They represent the largest and wealthiest segment of society, and are not products of the Great Depression era, which is a very important psychological consideration. The Depression era mind set is one of saving every penny and spending money only on necessity. The Baby Boomers have money and disposable income and they want to spend it. \nIronically, there is also great stress in this revolution. \nOne of the big ironies of today is that the technology itself has become the craft or art of the period. Much of technology has created a great uncertainty and insecurity among society, especially among the key economic drivers of the world, the Baby Boomers.\n\n\nWhere does this end?\n\nThe evolution is and will continue without many even conscious of the fact. Maybe bringing this debate to light will alert more and more people to the idea of investing a small percentage of their disposable or investment money into something tangible that they can enjoy every day of their lives and have the opportunity to have it grow in value over time is an acceptable and rational idea. Time will tell!\n\nPlease continue to look for more of my articles on this subject.",
