      "body": "<html>\n<p>Back in January this year, Stripe (an off the shelf online payment provider for websites and mobile apps) announced that they would be dropping support for transacting in bitcoin and that they would only accept payments made in standard fiat currencies going forwards.</p>\n<p>Diving a little deeper, Stripe gave the following reasons for this move which on the face of it, seems entirely logical:</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Bitcoin valuations are more inline with financial assets such as gold or real estate.</li>\n  <li>Market volatility is too high often leading to failures, where the wrong amount is received due to price fluctuations, during the time it takes to process a transaction.</li>\n  <li>Fees have also risen substantially, where a single transaction a fee of tens of USD is common making it comparable to expensive bank wires.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>In addition to this, shop owners need to keep on top of inventory pricing and unless there is a programatic way to keep tabs on this via an API, it makes transacting in bitcoin not very practical at all. But I always wondered why they didn't simply choose another coin that was relatively more stable.</p>\n<p>Well I now I believe I have my answer... Today while scrolling through the endless recommendations on my YT feed, a post from Chris Coney (@The Cryptoverse) caught my attention; a shift in wind direction.</p>\n<p>Chris runs the Cryptouniversity website which offers a number of online training courses for people new to the market, presumably looking to become the next crypto millionaire. The courses can be purchased with fiat (via the Stripe platform) or with Bitcoin, though it's probably no surprise that 95% of all transactions are conducted with fiat currencies, given that the courses are mainly for people new to the industry.</p>\n<p>What is surprising however, is that 3 days ago Stripe served Chris with a notice of service termination on the grounds that his website is in violation of the Stripe Service Agreement under the Prohibited Businesses &amp; Activities section&nbsp;(<a href=\"https://stripe.com/us/prohibited-businesses#financial-and-professional-services\">https://stripe.com/us/prohibited-businesses</a>). Stripe in their email referenced the following as the particular violation clause:</p>\n<blockquote>Virtual currency that can be monetized, resold, or converted to physical or digital products and services or otherwise exit the virtual world (e.g., Bitcoin); sale of stored value or credits maintained, accepted and issued by anyone other than the seller</blockquote>\n<p>Well ok, fair enough. But that should be no problem, the website sells only courses and doesn't sell any virtual currencies, which Chris explains in his response to Stripe. But then Stripe responds most curiously:</p>\n<blockquote>While I understand the distinction you're making, our financial parters do not currently allow us to support any businesses that are related to the cryptocurrency/virtual currency industry - this includes business and organisations that are not directly selling this service but would instead provide information and resources to individuals who would be using or selling cryptocurrencies....&nbsp;</blockquote>\n<p>Wow!... That's quite some distance away from where Stripe were positioned towards the end of last year. They've done a complete U-Turn on support for the crypto industry and now won't even associate themselves with 3rd party organisations that endorse, or even talk about it for that matter.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>That seems to be quite the draconian policy, though granted it could be to protect themselves from what they perceive as future risk however, if this becomes a trend and service providers across the board begin to align their policies in a similar manner then I couldn't help but feel like this is a bow shot, aimed squarely at those directly supporting the crypto industry and those choosing to operate 'outside' of the traditional financial system (i.e. illicit business activities).</p>\n<p>Conversely, it might also be a big fat nothing burger; but it's definitely worth keeping our eyes on it, we'll see how it develops.</p>\n<p>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9hvyPQoswI</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "Hey Greg, I wrote an article that challenges this narrative and while it's just for fun, I do think there is still a response to come from the establishment and it may surprise people how quickly it catches on (or doesn't).\n\nhttps://steemit.com/cryptocurrencies/@lukemedway/crypto-s-on-course-for-irony-thrusted-by-the-winds-of-mainstream\n\nRegardless, I agree with what you're saying but I suspect there is likely to be troubled waters ahead for Bitcoin in the medium term. In mid-November, we have this hard fork and since there is no agreement on which fork will remain dominant, the two resulting products will essentially face a showdown and potentially split Bitcoin's value in half. In addition, because it is a fight to the death, there is no replay protection built into these forks which could also open the door for some rather ugly security issues and we all know what will happen if there is another major hacking story.\n\nSo it makes sense to me that there is also likely to be an opportunity ahead for alt-coins as people diversify themselves to looking to mitigate forking risks.       "body": "<html>\n<p>There has certainly been a lot of hype around crypto currencies over the past year; we saw Bitcoin break the $1,000 level, then toy with the price of Gold for a while and with a small correction that would attract more buyers we then watched price sail into $5,000 levels!</p>\n<p>If you were lucky enough to be among the earliest adopters of Bitcoin back in 2009, you could have purchased 5,000 coins for a mere $27 United States Dollars. And at the peak of the currency's valuation this year, that would have transformed a $27 initial investment into an eye watering $2.5m inside of just 7 years! That's an insane ROI, a 7 digit one in fact! (9,259,159%)</p>\n<p>With those kind of numbers it's easy to see why there has been so much hype surrounding Bitcoin and yet, when I speak to the average person about it, it seems as though they have either never heard it, or they are aware of it but don't really \"get it\".&nbsp;</p>\n<p>So what really is the point in Crypto's anyway? Well, the point is actually something rather admirable and Bitcoin delivers a rather upbeat mission statement claiming that their technology will work to solve some of the biggest problems within the financial industry today. They state:</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Fiat currency (that is, currency that has no intrinsic value and is not backed by anything tangible) is a terrible store of value for it can simply be printed by central banks, lowering the value of your accumulated wealth due to &nbsp;increased supply.</li>\n  <li>The economic environment today, is fiercely geared towards spending, encourages debt and discourages savings (taking out loans allows banks to print more money via the fractional reserve system, effectively making everyone poorer).</li>\n  <li>To empower the 2.1bn people who live in poverty and are not currently able to be serviced by traditional financial services, particularly banking. (Those are people earning less than $3.10/day).</li>\n  <li>Costs of electronic transactions are still too high for many. 85% of all transaction in the world are still conducted with cash.</li>\n  <li>Traditional banking and payment systems are not secure.</li>\n  <li>Trust within the banking sector is also at an all time low.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Reading between the lines, it seems that cryptos then are like digitally crafted \"up-middle-fingers\" aimed directly at the financial establishment and up to this point, the establishment seems to have largely been ignoring it.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>That is until a few weeks back, when a highly animated Jamie Dimon (JP Morgan, CEO) came out on CNBC and shouted Bitcoin down, claiming it a fraud and heralding a crypto armageddon. He argued that governments and central banks would in the end produce legislation/regulation that would eventually render the currency obsolete.</p>\n<p>Soon after that, someone with a sense of humour, produced this fully accurate meme:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.redd.it/fjokgew6snlz.png\" width=\"617\" height=\"731\"/></p>\n<p>Of course, like the meme, many have commented that Mr. Dimon simply wanted to get in at a better price, while others dismiss his argument entirely, claiming that he simply lacks understanding of the blockchain technology altogether. Whatever you believe to be true, one thing remains certain, and that is that crypto currencies are no longer flying under the radar of major financial institutions.</p>\n<p>The Bank of International Settlements based in Switzerland released a publication last month, in which they revealed they were actively working on decisions to implement their own 'Central Bank Crypto Currency' or CBCC, for use within &nbsp;consumer markets. Attributes for the currency are still being defined but it appears that they are even toying with the idea of providing anonymous peer to peer payment capabilities, despite concerns over 'illicit' uses that this typically invites.</p>\n<p>It seems to me then, that as central banks adopt this technology for their very own systems, the demand for decentralisation will be rigorously tested. If they can find a way to retain all of the advantages of Bitcoin while remaining centralised, then it stands to reason that Bitcoin will most likely become obsolete within the next few years (if not already).</p>\n<p>Obviously, that will not spell the end of Crypto's, but it could spell an end to Crypto's as we know them as they become thrusted by the winds of mainstream on a course set for irony, and their technologies cannibalised by the very institutions they were so destined to replace...</p>\n<p>Nah!
