Finally a company and a leader that puts what is right above the Almighty stock price. \n\nTesla's mission is not to make money but to accelerate the adoption of electric cars and Solar power and in my opinion the only driving force in the world doing this, is Tesla. \n\nOthers say they are doing it off their own volition but I would argue that if it weren't for Tesla they would not have started yet and without Tesla their vision for the electricification of the world would be much smaller and more divided. \n\nAlso since money actually only has real value when real work is actually done, Tesla is actually worth every penny it's currently worth and we the people know this, that why we love Tesla and Elon. \n\nMost of this backlash towards Tesla, is simply invester posturing because they misread the past to predict the future. \n\nI hope Tesla wins not just in their mission but also in profitability. Either way, a far more interesting question, if (like me) you have no financial interest in the business’s success or failure, is: does it matter?\n\nI’m entirely serious. We tend to assume that a company’s purpose is to make money for its shareholders, or at least “not go bankrupt,” because money is how we measure success. And this is in fact true of most companies. But it is not true of Tesla. “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure,” and this is as true of money as it is of any other measure. The purpose of Tesla is not to make money; it is to pioneer fleets of smart mass-market electric cars, and the infrastructure to support them, and battery technology which is not limited to cars. Making money is ancillary.\n\nAnd whether or not they are making money, they are succeeding at their purpose. They are building the world’s largest factory — in fact, the world’s largest building; it’s still under construction, but parts of it are already up and running. They all but own the luxury electric car market, and are on course to dominate the mass market as well, while also manufacturing power packs.\n\nI’m sure Elon Musk would like to do this while turning a sweet profit. Which is of course also, technically, his fiduciary duty. But if he fails to do so, is that really so tragic? For those of us who aren’t shareholders or bondholders, I mean. (Don’t you worry about Elon, he won’t be missing any meals.)\n\nMaybe it wasn’t even possible to do so — in which case Musk will have used the capital markets to essentially subsidize Tesla with free money. (And, interestingly, open-source the resulting patents.) In which case, you know what, more power to him for managing to fund a loss-making investment in what is not so much a car company as it is infrastructure for our shared future.\n\nAfter all, even if Tesla stock goes to zero, and its bonds default to pennies-on-the-dollar, its factories and software repositories and human capital will all be there, and no Chapter 11 court or committee will be blind to the fact that they’re worth far more as a coherent unit than they would be as separate assets. The analogy I like to draw is that of the Channel Tunnel, which was privately dug and built, and a complete financial debacle for its investors — “a wonderful thing from which we’ve all benefited, apart from the people who paid for it to be built who lost substantially all their money.”\n\nThat quote may yet apply to Tesla. Does it sound unfair to stockholders and bondholders? Not at all: this is capitalism in action, you pays your money and you takes your chances. But if you’re not a stockholder, and not a bondholder, maybe don’t worry so much about headlines screaming about Tesla’s financial unviability. We don't build things that follow the rules of nature.\n2. In nature, there are self-limiting factors built in.\n3. Cam came across an apple tree. Cam started to eat as many apples as he could. \n\nThen all of a sudden John, Joe, Alen, Janice, Nickki, Trinkets, Jerry, Don, Peter, Henry, Bill, Mary, Jane, Joy, Star, Alex, Nimbus, Johnny and Gruff who were all part of Cam's herd caught wind of the delicious smell of apple juice dripping from Cam's mouth and suddenly in a, rushing frenzy, all the apples were gone. \n\nAs it turned out Cam got five and everyone else got, maybe three and little johnny, Jane's new kid only got one. It was so sad for Cam. \n\nSo the main reason I tell the story is that in natural systems, nature creates built-in limiters that prevent addictive behaviors. Only so many loaded apple trees per year.\n\nSo if you are an animal like in our story and you come across an a whole slew of apple trees and you have the propensity to be addicted to apples you most likely will never experience an addiction to apples because you aren't the only horse in town and there are not that many apples.\n\nIf you run around the countryside trying to get more apples you just won't be able to do it since you don't have any way to carry them. You can't eat them all. And the rest of your herd will most likely get in your face for being so selfish. \n\nI  think that we all need to consider how we build things. Like blockchains. \n\nImagine this. \n\nWe create a blockchain based Facebook. We all get to own our own data and we make lots of money, yay! and when people want to use our data they pay us for access at a fair price. \n\nBut what about this? \n\nSay our whole social profile is built into the block chain. That thing we did 20 years ago is still there remembered and never forgotten. That thing we did is now used by the banks in their determination to extend to you some credit or by our govenment to determine our eligibility for a tax return. Or by our friends to determine our character. Or your employer to decide if you are a fit for their quest for an elitist company. \n\nThink about it. \n\nWe need to understand the nature of nature before we go about creating immutable things that will hang around in our past like a bad memory. We also need to build in scarcity. I believe Mr. Nakamoto got that part right. But time will tell. But just because, Satoshi thought about this, maybe his assumption was that there would be only one blockchain. But as it turns out there's going to be tons of them, all devaluing each other. How's that all going to turn out? Just wait till one big rich dude starts playing with the currency. What will happen then? \n\nAnyway. Lots to think about. \n\nI recommend we all think long and hard, think about how this type of thing plays out in nature. There are so many levels of nature and in nature there is the recognition that things are connected to other things and in some cultures, there is even the concept of forgiveness built into the cultural fabric. \n\nIn the Jewish culture, for example, there was and maybe there still is. the idea of 7 years of debt forgiveness and after 50 years land that was taken over due to indebtedness had to be given back to the family to whom it was entitled. \n\nThis way nothing could spin out of control and into the control of a few. \n\nWe need ideas like these built into our block chains. \n\nHere is a book that is worth a read. It devels into this idea of how the law is not an immutable thing, but an agreement.\n\nThe law, it is a part of nature the comes out of nature and nature changes based on how we interact with each other and if we think a law is immutable, it really isn't. At one level it can change once the agreement that created it changes. There are of course fundamental laws that do not seem to change.
