titleHow Fast Can Quantum Computers Get?
body![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmed4VY7DDZrmgWF1TP4cLuXyrBqsZSBRwcvF4Tb7hZCS8/image.png) Over the past five decades, standard computer processors have gotten increasingly faster. In recent years, however, the limits to that technology have become clear: Chip components can only get so small, and be packed only so closely together, before they overlap or short-circuit. If companies are to continue building ever-faster computers, something will need to change. One key hope for the future of increasingly fast computing is my own field, quantum physics. Quantum computers are expected to be much faster than anything the information age has developed so far. But my recent research has revealed that quantum computers will have limits of their own – and has suggested ways to figure out what those limits are. The limits of understanding To physicists, we humans live in what is called the "classical" world. Most people just call it "the world," and have come to understand physics intuitively: Throwing a ball sends it up and then back down in a predictable arc, for instance. Even in more complex situations, people tend to have an unconscious understanding of how things work. Most people largely grasp that a car works by burning gasoline in an internal combustion engine (or extracting stored electricity from a battery), to produce energy that is transferred through gears and axles to turn tires, which push against the road to move the car forward. Under the laws of classical physics, there are theoretical limits to these processes. But they are unrealistically high: For instance, we know that a car can never go faster than the speed of light. And no matter how much fuel is on the planet, or how much roadway or how strong the construction methods, no car will get close to going even 10 percent of the speed of light. People never really encounter the actual physical limits of the world, but they exist, and with proper research, physicists can identify them. Until recently, though, scholars only had a rather vague idea that quantum physics had limits too, but didn't know how to figure out how they might apply in the real world. Heisenberg's uncertainty Physicists trace the history of quantum theory back to 1927, when German physicist Werner Heisenberg showed that the classical methods did not work for very small objects, those roughly the size of individual atoms. When someone throws a ball, for instance, it's easy to determine exactly where the ball is, and how fast it's moving. But as Heisenberg showed, that's not true for atoms and subatomic particles. Instead, an observer can see either where it is or how fast it's moving – but not both at the exact same time. This is an uncomfortable realization: Even from the moment Heisenberg explained his idea, Albert Einstein (among others) was uneasy with it. It is important to realize that this "quantum uncertainty" is not a shortcoming of measurement equipment or engineering, but rather how our brains work. We have evolved to be so used to how the "classical world" works that the actual physical mechanisms of the "quantum world" are simply beyond our ability to fully grasp. Entering the quantum world If an object in the quantum world travels from one location to another, researchers can't measure exactly when it has left nor when it will arrive. The limits of physics impose a tiny delay on detecting it. So no matter how quickly the movement actually happens, it won't be detected until slightly later. (The lengths of time here are incredibly tiny – quadrillionths of a second – but add up over trillions of computer calculations.) That delay effectively slows down the potential speed of a quantum computation – it imposes what we call the "quantum speed limit." Over the last few years, research, to which my group has contributed significantly, has shown how this quantum speed limit is determined under different conditions, such as using different types of materials in different magnetic and electric fields. For each of these situations, the quantum speed limit is a little higher or a little lower. To everyone's big surprise, we even found that sometimes unexpected factors can help speed things up, at times, in counterintuitive ways. To understand this situation, it might be useful to imagine a particle moving through water: The particle displaces water molecules as it moves. And after the particle has moved on, the water molecules quickly flow back where they were, leaving no trace behind of the particle's passage. Now imagine that same particle traveling through honey. Honey has a higher viscosity than water – it's thicker and flows more slowly – so the honey particles will take longer to move back after the particle moves on. But in the quantum world, the returning flow of honey can build up pressure that propels the quantum particle forward. This extra acceleration can make a quantum particle's speed limit different from what an observer might otherwise expect. Designing quantum computers As researchers understand more about this quantum speed limit, it will affect how quantum computer processors are designed. Just as engineers figured out how to shrink the size of transistors and pack them more closely together on a classical computer chip, they'll need some clever innovation to build the fastest possible quantum systems, operating as close as possible to the ultimate speed limit. There's a lot for researchers like me to explore. It's not clear whether the quantum speed limit is so high it's unattainable – like the car that will never even get close to the speed of light. And we don't fully understand how unexpected elements in the environment – like the honey in the example – can help to speed up quantum processes. As technologies based on quantum physics become more common, we'll need to find out more about where the limits of quantum physics are, and how to engineer systems that take the best advantage of what we know. titleFortnite: Battle Royale Update Revamps The Map Tomorrow On PC, PS4, And Xbox One
body2018's first big Fortnite update is scheduled to launch this week, Epic Games has announced. Among a number of other things, this patch makes some significant changes to the Battle Royale map, both adding new areas and changing the look of existing ones. Epic has released the patch notes for update 2.2.0, which debuts on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on January 18. It includes the previously announced map overhaul showcased in the video below, which sees a number of areas added. These are primarily located on the western half of the map and include a new city area and a series of underground mines. Epic has also updated the various "biomes," as it calls them, so that the swamps, mountains, and so on have a more distinct look and feel to them. The patch notes also outline a change that has already gone into effect: the removal of friendly fire. This is due at least in part to a desire to reduce frustration stemming from players who deliberately kill their teammates. Whether the change sticks around long-term remains to be seen, as Epic states, "This is exploratory and subject to change. We will be closely evaluating this and want your feedback!" <iframe width="610" height="343" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Rf3Y-wxiEQQ" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> With this update installed, players will have less trouble reviving teammates when there are pickups nearby, as reviving now receives priority. The Scoped AR will no longer be found in supply drops, and the look of its scope has changed to be more modern and usable. A variety of visual improvements have been introduced; these include players interacting with grass and foliage when walking through it and the addition of water effects when you enter or leave a body of water. Load times are also said to be dramatically reduced on consoles, and voice chat will be available in the pre-game lobby. Fortnite's Save the World mode also receives some attention in this patch, although that primarily comes in the form of bug fixes. However, Epic has made some changes to Commander XP so that even low-value items yield XP when crafted from the main menu. Update 2.2.0's launch coincides with the end of Battle Royale's Winter event. However, Save the World's event has been extended until January 24. Additionally, Battle Royale players who purchase the Season 2 Battle Pass will gain five free tiers once Season 3 begins. Those eager to make progress during the current season can purchase ten tiers for the price of six for a limited time. You can check out the full patch notes on Epic's website. Font: Gamespot.com

titleSony Announces Monster Hunter And White PlayStation 4 Pros Are Coming West
body![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSYpriK7LiwVRiyDR1in8CnCpHVReDcXR27zpTRfnK8wd/image.png) It's always nice to have options and Sony is providing them with new PlayStation 4 Pros coming to America and Canada. The two new colors, White and a Monster Hunter-themed black with a logo and colored controller, are available in the coming weeks The white PlayStation 4 Pro was originally included solely in a Destiny 2 bundle, marking the first time a color other than Jet Black was made available for the Pro. Fans who already own Destiny 2 or didn't want to purchase the bundle can now buy the system itself separately for $399.99. The Monster Hunter bundle features an until-now Japanese-exclusive PlayStation 4 Pro bearing a special Monster Hunter design of a Rathalos, a unique red controller, and Monster Hunter World for $449.99. Officially named The Rathalos Edition, the console will be available on January 26 in very limited quantities, the same day as the game itself. Both consoles are exclusive to Gamestop and come equipped with 1TB harddrives. [Source: PlayStation Blog]

titleCES 2018's Hot New Trend: The Total Death of Privacy
body![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZh9PdLGPeUHnW9czRDtyuQ9wyLbFHb5r8Czw1kvWoy22/image.png) What if, by using a hidden tracker or a smart bracelet, you could monitor your child's location from home to school and anywhere in between? What if you could use brain-wave technology to tell exactly how much attention they pay in class? What if you could program your car to prevent certain (teen) drivers from traveling beyond a preset boundary, monitoring their speed and reporting back their location all the while? What if, at the push of a button, you could turn on a camera to see what's going on in that very car? These are four very real pitches—for Tabs, BrainCo, Derive Systems, and Raven, respectively—at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that proudly position invasion of privacy as a main feature. THESE GADGETS EXPLORE INTERPERSONAL PRIVACY INVASION: SOMEONE YOU KNOW, WATCHING YOU RIGHT NOW. Privacy and technology have been at odds for years, of course. From ad-tracking by social media giants like Facebook to the NSA programs revealed by Edward Snowden, we've been reckoning with the not-quite-slow-but-very-steady erosion of privacy norms for years. This year's slate of gadgets, however, represents a different front in the war. Mass surveillance is ubiquitous but abstract: A faceless organization is collecting digital breadcrumbs automatically for automated tracking or investigation at a later date. Alternatively, these new gadgets explore the invasion of interpersonal privacy: Someone you know may be watching what you are doing, right now. It should come as no surprise that almost all of these devices target parents who want to spy on their children—a rare case where heavy-handing, it's-for-your-own-good surveillance could feasibly fly. Still, it's easy to imagine how it goes wrong. Black Mirror illustrated exactly that in its recent episode "ArkAngel," where this sort of tech proves so invasive that (spoilers) it ruins lives and becomes illegal in-universe. And frankly, that episode is a little on-the-nose. If you're not a teen with especially nosy and tech-savvy parents, you likely have nothing to fear—at least not yet, not directly. But a culture of mass surveillance defeatism has helped to pave the way for increasingly invasive tech. The NSA's already watching. Facebook already knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. What fresh invasions might these gadgets embolden if they become the new norm? Thanks to machine learning and facial recognition it's becoming easier than ever to sort through mountains of video footage. As a result, mass surveillance and interpersonal privacy invasion are on a collision course. At its press conference this year, Panasonic touted its work on a facial-recognition payment system that can identify and track repeat customers. Amazon's experiments with brick and mortar stores are in the same vein, though the award for the creepiest vision of this sort of surveillance probably goes to Microsoft, with its comprehensive vision of the privacy-free future from earlier this year. The steady encroachment on privacy is not always so overt. Take Buoy, an AI-powered system that tracks your water usage to ferret out leaks and keep your bills down. In order to spot aberrations, it learns the normal cycle of water usage in your home—what a shower's worth of water is, or how a toilet flush looks in your pipes. As a result, one representative mentioned off-handedly, it learns your bathroom habits as a matter of course, up to and including whether folks are (or aren't) washing their hands. Welcome to 2018, where not even the bathroom is safe.

permlinka-beginner-s-guide-to-bitcoin
titleA Beginner's Guide to Bitcoin
bodyA fast guide to cryptocurrency's golden child. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTDFA8NLWEEMH3qiS6msavn9rw4m3wDSBQ6wZjct8DqzG/image.png) The financial world can't stop talking about bitcoin. In recent weeks, the headlines of business journals and finance sections have covered everything from the importance of investing in bitcoin to how the bubble is about to burst (within days of bitcoin futures hitting the stock exchange). To anyone on the outside, those words make no sense. But that doesn’t mean that bitcoin isn’t on the average American’s radar. Introduced in 2009, bitcoin is an anonymous cryptocurrency, or a form of currency that exists digitally through encryption. It was invented to be unhackable, untraceable, and safe for investors. The value started out insanely cheap and hit a bump in 2013 that took it to about $250 per bitcoin. Once bitcoin futures hit the CME Group, the price of bitcoin skyrocketed to nearly $20,000. Think of it this way: If you'd invested $100 on January 1, 2011, when one bitcoin was valued at .30 cents, those bitcoins could be worth around $5 million today. So, at least for now, it’s not going away. Here's a quick rundown on what the hell bitcoin actually is. How does bitcoin work? Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that is conducted on a public ledger, the "blockchain." Digitally transferred, it exists only online. Much like gold, it can have monetary value while also being a commodity, but it’s still its own currency. It is also decentralized and not managed by a single entity, but rather a group of people who process transactions, called miners. This means it is not subject to government regulations when traded or spent, and you don't need a bank to use it. Explain this blockchain. Miners are in charge of making sure bitcoin transactions made by users are recorded and legit. Simply put, they do this by grouping every new bitcoin transaction made during a set time frame into a block. Once a block is made, it is added to the chain, which is linked together with a complex cryptography. This chain of blocks is the public ledger, and its extreme complexity is what currently protects transactions. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmP7ya8nJbXfur2ruHv8iJoeSczN2M9vZ1ekdhX4eFozWo/image.png) Is bitcoin infinite? No, at the maximum, the system is designed to top out at 21 million bitcoin. At that point, bitcoin will stop being released. Most people think that will be around the year 2140. You see, miners don't build blocks just from the kindness in their hearts. When a miner builds a block, they also have to solve a series of complex math puzzles. If they can do it before any other miner, they unlock a predetermined amount of bitcoin that they can keep—a prize for being both smart and quick. The way this competition for bitcoin will last until 2140 is through “halving events.” The first time bitcoin was mined, the founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, released 50 bitcoin, which he kept. Moving forward, when a miner completed a puzzle, he or she got 25 bitcoin. In the summer of 2016, that was halved again to 12.5 bitcoin. That amount will continue to be halved periodically until all 21 million bitcoin have been released. Is it safe? By the estimation of many bitcoin experts, that public ledger is pretty bulletproof. To change the ledger, you not only would have to harness a ton of computer power, but you’d also have to do it in very public space where thousands of other computers and users can see exactly what you’re doing. What one person or computer does affects the entire blockchain, and everyone can police the transactions. So, should I invest? Why? Currently, unless you're spending thousands of dollars to buy it in bulk, bitcoin is nothing more than a stock, though the inventors would hate to have it explained that way. In time, it could become a reasonable mean of purchasing goods and services—Japan accepts it now, legally. But for now, it's quite literally an investment. And if you're smart (or lucky) it can make you money, assuming the bubble doesn't burst. How do I invest? Just like any investment, it’s best to consult someone who is well-versed in making investments. But a good rule is to not invest any more than you’re willing to lose. Cryptocurrency can be volatile, growing and plummeting in terms of value every day. If you're still intrigued, there’s a number of apps you can download on your phone to get started investing, like Coinbase, Blockfolio, and Bitstamp. These apps are also "digital wallets" that store your bitcoin. The most convenient and popular seems to be Coinbase. It’s an app that you can download on your phone and invest up to $750 a week. It’s secure, but then again, it garnered some buzzy headlines last week for insider trading. Wait. Insider trading? Isn’t that the point of b— Yeah, who knows. But Bitcoin CEO Roger Ver defended Coinbase and said that it’s not a call for further regulation, and then referenced a couple of economists who support insider trading. People didn’t love that answer, but that’s the world you’re investing in. So, get your bitcoin and head to the Digital Wild West.

In recent weeks, the headlines of business journals and finance sections have covered everything from the importance of investing in bitcoin to how the bubble is about to burst (within days of bitcoin futures hitting the stock exchange). To anyone on the outside, those words make no sense.\n\nBut that doesn’t mean that bitcoin isn’t on the average American’s radar. Think of it this way: If you'd invested $100 on January 1, 2011, when one bitcoin was valued at .30 cents, those bitcoins could be worth around $5 million today.\n\nSo, at least for now, it’s not going away. Here's a quick rundown on what the hell bitcoin actually is.\n\nHow does bitcoin work?\nBitcoin is a cryptocurrency that is conducted on a public ledger, the \"blockchain.\" Digitally transferred, it exists only online. Much like gold, it can have monetary value while also being a commodity, but it’s still its own currency. It is also decentralized and not managed by a single entity, but rather a group of people who process transactions, called miners. This means it is not subject to government regulations when traded or spent, and you don't need a bank to use it.\n\nExplain this blockchain.\nMiners are in charge of making sure bitcoin transactions made by users are recorded and legit. Simply put, they do this by grouping every new bitcoin transaction made during a set time frame into a block. Once a block is made, it is added to the chain, which is linked together with a complex cryptography. This chain of blocks is the public ledger, and its extreme complexity is what currently protects transactions.\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmP7ya8nJbXfur2ruHv8iJoeSczN2M9vZ1ekdhX4eFozWo/image.png)\n\nIs bitcoin infinite?\nNo, at the maximum, the system is designed to top out at 21 million bitcoin. titleThe Coolest New Laptop at CES Is Actually a Phone
bodyRazer's 'Project Linda' imagines a one-device future. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQMV9JxSeMEBfj21BUVL9cpVciPDiGqEaNUSjhM4hq2eW/image.png) You have a supercomputer in your pocket, but chances are you still carry around a different, separate one in your briefcase or backpack. As phones get every more powerful, there's really no reason for it to be this way. Razer's Project Linda, announced today at CES 2018, is a tantalizing glance into a world where the two finally converge, even though you might not see it happen any time soon. Project Linda is, on some level, just a phone case. A phone case that's shaped like a laptop, sports a 13.3-inch quad-HD display, 53.6Wh battery, 200 GB of storage capacity, a keyboard, and a handful of ports. When paired with a Razer Phone that acts as its brain and touchpad, Linda can roar to life as a laptop that looks nearly identical to Razer's 'Blade' line of gaming clamshells. <iframe width="692" height="389" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5gKu-T13vXs" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> https://youtu.be/5gKu-T13vXs This concept of turning a phone into a laptop (or tablet) by Voltron-ing it with some accessories is not particularly new. The Atrix Lapdock tried to marry phones and laptops as early as 2011. The ASUS Padfone, which allowed users to slot their phones into a larger tablet accessory, hit the market in 2014 to middling reviews. Microsoft's "Continuum" project for Windows 10 aspired to make Windows Phones usable as a replacement to a laptop, also with pretty mediocre results. For the most part, modern day flagship phones do have enough horsepower to function as a laptop for basic email and web-browsing tasks, but challenge is mastering the fit and finish to end up with a product that doesn't feel like an insufferably lame imitation of the gadget it's trying to replace. It's a challenge that a specialist hardware company like Razer might be able to meet, but for now Linda is just a concept, and so far none of Razer's most far-out CES concept devices have actually gone up for sale. It's a cool idea for sure, but for the time being that is all it is.
