Instead of technicians needing to know what every transistor and dial does in a piece of machinery, they simply point their smartphone camera at an exposed wiring panel. A digital overlay pops up, tells the tech what needs to be adjusted and why, and the problem is solved.\n\nThat’s exactly what one utility company, Westar Energy, is building into its infrastructure.\n\nWhen one hears the term, “augmented reality,” it’s not likely that utility companies are the first thing that come to mind. But if there’s one thing companies love, it’s cutting costs. And any time human knowledge and experience can be replaced by software, that’s a massive opportunity for reducing overhead.\n\nThe application, modestly dubbed the LineAssist SuperApp, is being rolled out to field technicians. It works by walking a tech through a troubleshooter for each specific model of controller. By using augmented reality, it shows the tech exactly what needs to be done to solve a given problem, much like the example above.\n\nNot only that, but the app includes reference material for the craftsman to use in case there is a related problem that isn’t explicitly covered by the app itself.\n\nWhile it’s reasonable to expect that it may take some months for all the bugs to be worked out of the program, Westar Energy is likely expecting this push into augmented reality to be well worth the investment. Taking technicians away from their work to drive to a site and work on something complex like a line voltage regulator is time consuming and expensive. It’s likely that the only thing preventing this mass adoption is the availability and sophistication of the development tools to create for the medium.\n\nThat said, one of the fastest ways to develop a new method of conveying information is through art. Television and the internet proved that art, and consequently advertising, can be a driving factor in adoption of new technology. Better shows means more people watching TV. And more people watching TV means more advertising dollars. And more advertising dollars means better TV. It’s a cycle.\n\nFans of mixed reality then should be happy to see the Miami-based artist Linda Cheung creating an augmented reality mural project that taps into the emotional aspect of climate change. Already a politically-charged issue, you’re unlikely to find anyone on the planet who doesn’t have an opinion about this sensitive subject.\n\nFrom a marketing perspective, Cheung’s choice to focus on climate change for her exhibit is brilliant. Users are treated to an interactive experience when they look at Cheung’s exhibit through their smartphone. A play on the classic “Miami” sign, Linda’s version features a massive Xanax tablet where the “I” would be along with an “M” covered in gaudy diamonds. \n\nUsers can then choose whether or not to make a change towards the attitude of climate change. If they select “make no change,” then they’re treated to a dystopian future with collapsed buildings covered in overgrowth. If they choose “be the change,” then the future looks more promising — renewable energy sources and clean streets are their reward. \n\nThe exhibit is meant to evoke thought and emotion around the topic of climate change. Regardless of where individuals stand on the topic, the fact remains that through Cheung’s clever use of augmented reality, more people are being exposed to the subject than would have been otherwise. With an estimated 6 million Americans living in facilities that specialize in Alzheimer’s care and an aging Baby Boomer population, it’s possible that we’ll see this human ailment turn into an institutional problem in the next few years.\n\nLos Angeles-based Embodied Labs is looking to alleviate some of this pressure with mixed reality.\n\nThey’ve developed a new program that helps train caregivers by simulating what it would be like to suffer from the disease. Using a VR headset, users are transported to a fictional reality where lights feel too bright, the print on grocery products is fuzzy, and family members openly show frustration with your behavior for reasons you can’t understand.\n\nOne of the characters in the program, Beatriz, is a 60-something year old math teacher with Alzheimer’s. When users don the headset, they experience what it would like to be in Beatriz’s shoes.\n\nFor instance, one of the scenes features her on a park bench with her grown daughter. Beatriz gets visibly flustered when she thinks that her daughter has stolen her purse.\n\nLater in the simulation, she startled by the sudden movement of a shadow on the wall of her living room accompanied by a loud noise. A few seconds later, we realize that the shadow and noise were just distorted inputs from the ceiling fan.\n\nDr. Neelum Aggarwal of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center, an Advisor to Embodied Labs, had this to say about the project:\n\n> You are there and you are observing this and you have a deep sense of feeling of what’s happening. We know when there’s an emotional connection to something, that whole experience is enhanced and virtual reality seems to be able to do this.”\n\nWhen asked about specifically about caregivers, Aggarwal responded:\n\n> Caregivers of people with dementia often ask me, ‘What is she feeling? I don’t know what it’s like. My hope is we not only focus on providers and students that will become future physicians but let’s also use this with the caregivers to help them.”\n\nWith professional training likely to remain one of the chief uses of augmented and virtual reality technology, it’s possible that we’ll see more programs that tackle tough issues like this in the future. Much like calculators have erased the need for on-the-fly mathematical calculations, augmented reality programs could replace domain-specific knowledge.\n\nWhile it’s still mostly theoretical at this point, augmented reality enthusiasts around the world are slowly integrating the medium’s unique benefits into their training programs. One team of Italian-based researchers have created augmented reality software that can project 3D models of CT scans directly onto a human body. So far, they’ve only applied this concept to needle insertion — generally a first step in interventional oncology — and found it to be successful within a 5 millimeter range.\n\n This may not sound too particularly exciting at first, but fast forward ten years into the future and the implications may be huge. Inserting a needle is a fairly simple task, even for something as complex as cancer surgery. But imagine a future where the entire surgical process was guided by augmented reality. Not only would costs of expensive medical procedures likely drop, but human beings in parts of the world without highly-trained surgeons would still be able to take emergency measures against aggressive cancer.\n\nFurthermore, removing the need for ultrasound and CT scans would protect technicians from overexposure to harmful radiation.\n\nMarco Solbiati, the creator of the software, explains the benefits of his system:\n\n    “Efforts have recently been made not only to improve the efficacy of ablative devices, but also to increase the accuracy of image-guiding systems. Several navigation systems have been developed using augmented reality techniques … [that] allow the operator to see 3D virtual objects superimposed upon the real world and not on a different screen.”\n\nCurrently, Solbiati and his team are working on more ways to make their prototype even better. Such changes include improving the 3D architecture of a patient’s internal organs and reducing the amount of skin markers necessary for aligning the device.\n\nOnce the device becomes accurate enough, then it’s only a matter of time before advanced medical procedures are no longer something that trained medical professionals who have spent 10 years in medical school are qualified to perform. When will that day come? Likely sooner than we think.",

Instead of the effects being seen on a wall or in thin air, they're overlayed onto the cube itself.\n\nRoughly the size of a Rubick's Cube, the Merge Cube offers stunning augmented reality graphics in a bite-sized package. Users can use it to explore the solar system or traverse an ancient castle. And instead of waving awkwardly at the air, they've been gifted with a piece of \"hardware\" that they can manipulate with their fingertips.\n\nAlthough it does seem a bit awkward to hold the Merge Cube in one hand and your smartphone in the other, once AR glasses become mainstream, this problem is likely to disappear. Users also report that playing with the cube itself is fun, intuitive, and requires very little app-specific knowledge. If you can point your phone at it, you can figure it out.\n\nComplete with a developer kit for 3rd parties to create apps on the platform, it seems that Merge Cube is aiming to be more than just a gimmicky toy. Instead of simply standing still, pictures of individuals come to live with facial expressions and movement. You could say that JK Rowling was pioneering augmented reality without even knowing it.\n\nA newspaper in Europe has done the same thing. The biggest selling daily European newspaper, Bild, now has a feature that will transform pictures in the paper into thirty second video clips when users hover with their smartphones.\n\nCurrently, the only supported news items are stories from Germany’s recent soccer matches in the Bundesliga season. And while this isn’t the first attempt to integrate augmented reality and print news (JK Rowling would have to take credit for that), it’s certainly the largest scale effort.\n\nJapan and Canada have also played around with combining newspapers and augmented reality, but their efforts have been sporadic at best. Introduced only as an advertising gimmick as opposed to a feature of the paper, they have failed to adopt the unique stance that Bild has: offering content exclusively via augmented reality medium. These video clips are available only via the newspaper — so either readers take advantage of it, or they go without.\n\nPerhaps best of all is that this feature is available at no extra cost. It’s simply an additional perk of buying the paper.\n\nMost interesting is the fact that while many newspapers are slowly dissolving their print assets in favor of digital ones, Bild seems to be taking a different approach. Instead of ditching their old-fashioned paper newspaper, they’re incentivizing users to purchase it with exclusive content. A creative marketing strategy? Instead of technicians needing to know what every transistor and dial does in a piece of machinery, they simply point their smartphone camera at an exposed wiring panel. A digital overlay pops up, tells the tech what needs to be adjusted and why, and the problem is solved.\n\nThat’s exactly what one utility company, Westar Energy, is building into its infrastructure.\n\nWhen one hears the term, “augmented reality,” it’s not likely that utility companies are the first thing that come to mind. But if there’s one thing companies love, it’s cutting costs. And any time human knowledge and experience can be replaced by software, that’s a massive opportunity for reducing overhead.\n\nThe application, modestly dubbed the LineAssist SuperApp, is being rolled out to field technicians. It works by walking a tech through a troubleshooter for each specific model of controller. By using augmented reality, it shows the tech exactly what needs to be done to solve a given problem, much like the example above.\n\nNot only that, but the app includes reference material for the craftsman to use in case there is a related problem that isn’t explicitly covered by the app itself.\n\nWhile it’s reasonable to expect that it may take some months for all the bugs to be worked out of the program, Westar Energy is likely expecting this push into augmented reality to be well worth the investment. Taking technicians away from their work to drive to a site and work on something complex like a line voltage regulator is time consuming and expensive. The event? Burning Man. \n\nWhile just over 50,000 people are expected to attend the event, the Smithsonian Museum is looking to make the event accessible to the rest of the world. Their Burning Man exhibit, No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man, utilizes an augmented reality Snapchat Lens to allow users to \"walk through\" the Renwick Gallery where the exhibit is located.\n\nIlana Rosin, Associate Director of Paid Social Media, said this about the exhibit:\n\n> \"It looks a little funny when you see people holding up their phone and staring at their screen. But what they're actually doing is viewing the art, reading about the artists that created them, and moving around the room.\"\n\nSponsored by technology giant Intel, this project allegedly started as a way for the Smithsonian to digitize its millions of timeless artifacts \"just in case.\" But now, the project has expanded into creating mixed reality experiences to over one billion people worldwide. \n\nTo take things one step further, Intel has also announced a partnership with Sansar, a virtual reality social network lead by the founders of the now-defunct social network Second Life. In Q4 2018, users will be able to don a virtual reality headset and \"follow\" VR museum curators for a tour - just like they were in the Smithsonian.\n\nFrom Snapchat's perspective, this appears to ironically be a way for the company to stay relevant. As Instagram continues to steal market share from their little brother, Snapchat finds its daily user base shrinking while Instagram's grows.
