| body | Do you remember where you were on 911 (September 11, 2001)? What about April 4, 1968 the night Martin Luther King was shot down on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN? Or are you old enough to remember November 22, 1963 the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as his motorcade drove through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX on an unusually beautiful sunny day? Even if you don’t remember any of those historical events you can Google them or visit the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.org and discover all the details of exactly what happened on those days. But it’s not the same as remembering those events yourself. Because if you do remember any of those events they influenced your philosophy about good and bad and right and wrong. And over the years those experiences have unavoidably shaped you into the person you are today. Even if you don’t realize it on a conscious level. The same can be said about the first time you kissed a girl. Or learned to drive a car. Or the day your first child was born. All of those events are even more central to who you were and who you have become. And I am no different because my mind is filled with life experiences of all of the events I referred to above. The earliest historical event I can remember is the JFK assassination that happened when I was only six years old. But I was already in the first grade because both my parents were educators and they lied about my age to start me in school a year early. I didn’t understand the gravity of what happened but I do remember getting out of school early that day and the somber mood of all the adults. My parents included. I remember asking my dad in the car on the way home from school what happened. He told me an evil cowardly man has shot the President of the United States and we should pray that he lives. As soon as we got home the whole family huddled into the living room and turned on our brand new floor model black & white RCA TV. A short time later the TV news man (Walter Cronkite, I didn’t know his name at the time) took off his eyeglasses and almost cried as he told us the bad news that the President was dead. My mother wanted to learn more about the details of what happened but my father interrupted her in a stern voice and ordered my sister to turn the TV off. He said this family and this country has had enough bad news for one day and we don’t need any more. He then turned to us and said you kids be good and go to your rooms until your mama finishes cooking dinner. He hugged my sister myself and my younger brother and we did as we were told. Many years passed before I could put the pieces together to understand the full impact of what really happened that day. But I understood it was a very important event even back then. I won’t bore you with the details of my personal experiences related to every other major historical event that happened in my life because I’m sure you’ve got your own and I think I’ve made my point. But I will have to revisit certain points on the timeline of my life in this article that parallel significant cultural and historical events to better explain how and why we got to where we are now in the men and fathers rights movement. And that’s not easy for me for two reasons. First is because I’ve always been uncomfortable talking about myself. It sounds too pretentious and egotistical to me. And secondly because I like my privacy as much as anyone else does. That’s not to say I feel I’ve got anything to hide or be ashamed of but I believe that there are some things about a person that isn’t anybody’s business but their own. So I’d rather answer a question about myself than tell a story about myself. That way if the question is too personal or unrelated I just won’t answer it. But if I did this that way you wouldn’t understand the significance of the title of this article “The Hybrid Era Man”. We all have catalyst moments in our lives that parallel cultural and historical events that relate to everyone else in society. To us these moments can be very personal and private. But they can also be very public and generic. And “The Hybrid Era Man” is about a generation of men like myself that came of age during a time when American society was going through the biggest cultural change in it’s history. That time was called “The Sexual Revolution”. The significance of this is that our experiences gave us a unique perspective about how and why it happened that no other generation has. That doesn’t mean we’re smarter than anybody else. It just means we don’t have to read about it in a book or on the internet because we lived it. But before I get into the details of how this relates to men and fathers rights it’s important that I set up some very narrow qualifiers for this timeline. Because “The Hybrid Era Man” is a subset of a generation not an entire generation. Basically we are the men born between 1956 to 1960 that were children too young to participate in the early 1960’s part of The Sexual Revolution”. I guess you could say we are tail end Baby Boomers. The 1960’s were our “Leave it to beaver” and “Father knows best” days. When I look back on it now I think my brother and I were the African American version of Wally and the Beaver. And our parents were ideologically very similar to Ward and June Cleaver. They were great college educated parents that wanted the best for us. So the early years we were well cared for, protected and happy. But we knew the world was changing right outside our white picket fence. And those changes were really big changes. The civil rights movement was still going on. Our cousin that was only five years older than we were was one of the last young men to be drafted into the Vietnam war in 1971. That same year I got to see my first real naked woman in a playboy magazine a classmate of mine said he found under the bed at his uncle’s house. By the time I reached the tenth grade and entered high school in September of 1972 the Jackson Five and Al Green were dominating the R&B music charts. The movie The Godfather starring Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone was setting records at the box office. Pontiac had just unleashed their brand new super car the Trans Am with an 455 HP engine. We were in our early teens by that time and just discovering girls. But we knew there were limits and we obeyed those limits. But that didn’t stop us from trying to see how far we could go before a girl would say stop. And they would always say stop as soon as you put your hand under their skirt. So the parameters were pretty well set in stone and everybody knew what they were. Which was okay because it was still a lot of fun going to the movies, or a Jackson five concert, or just holding a pretty girl’s hand as you walked her home from school. By the end of the 1972/1973 school year the basic social values that had been instilled in us were still more the norm than the exception. But that was about to change in very drastic and abrupt ways. Over the summer of 1973 I started my first business cutting grass in the neighborhood using a new lawn mower my dad bought me. I was amazed at how much money people would pay you just to cut their grass. By the end of that summer I had made $720.00. And that was a lot of money to me back then. Even better my dad taught me to drive a car and I successfully got my learner’s permit license on the first try just one week before the start of the 1973/1974 school year. So I was super excited to get back to school. The first thing I did was try out for the football team because I knew all the girls loved football and basketball players. The truth is I wasn’t very good at it but I was one of the last two guys to make the team. Unfortunately for me I was the backup to the backup fullback that rarely played. But I did get a football jacket that was a major status symbol to wear around the campus. And I knew from my freshman year those things were chick magnets. So life was good and everything in my small universe was going almost exactly as I thought it would. But things started changing after coming back from the Christmas holiday break. The school started making preparations for the high school prom. And the girls started to become a lot friendlier. I mean a whole lot friendlier and cooperative. So much so I was confused at first. One girl I had known since the fifth grade that wouldn’t give me the time of day suddenly walked up to me and gave me her phone number and whispered in my ear ‘I’m on the pill’. I knew the rules and this was not the way things were supposed to happen. Other guys on the team and even guys who weren’t on the team were having the same thing happen to them. It wasn’t long before we were having full penetration sex with several girls over the course of that school year. It was like day and night. Of course we knew about the birth control pill. But we also knew the girls at our school couldn’t get them. But that had surely changed because these girls really did have birth control pills. And they weren’t shy about showing them to you as long as you agreed not to tell anybody. I even asked one girl how she got the pills. And she told me they just started giving them out at the county health clinic to any girl over 16. So her big sister got them for her. And as it turned out that’s how all the girls under 16 at the school were getting them. I thought this was a blessing from heaven. But I was still confused about why there was such a sudden change. The fact is that this was not a sudden change at all. It was the work of a massive feminist movement. And they had been working at it for decades. It had just trickled down into my little universe because it had reached critical mass. I didn’t know the full history of the birth control pill because they didn’t teach it in school at the time. And I didn’t know about the Griswold v. Connecticut supreme court case of 1965. Or more importantly I didn’t know about the Eisenstadt v. Baird supreme court case that had just been handed down a year earlier in 1972. Which was the real reason the girls at our high school gained access to the birth control pills. No one told or warned us about any of this. They just handed these pills out to these dopey high school girls like candy. And they in turn tested them out on us. Which made us the first wave of a full generation of male guinea pigs to experience the birth control pill after it saturated the entire market of the United States. That’s why I call my small four year part of the tail end baby boomers “The Hybrid Era Man”. We were raised to have conservative traditional American social values. But by the time we reached early adulthood the majority of society was going through a major Sexual Revolution. And we had to adapt to it. That doesn’t mean we forgot the traditional values our two parent families had instilled in us. But it did mean we would grow up to be more socially liberal and accepting than our parents generation. And that naivete would make us prime targets for “The Baby Trick Trap”. Because the fact of the matter is that The Sexual Revolution was good to us, but it wasn’t good for us. And it’s been even more of a complete disaster for every generation that has followed us. And that’s because these men have been indoctrinated to it all their lives. Sex before marriage, out-of-wedlock births and single mom homes are the de facto standards that every generation of men that followed us have been taught to accept and even respect. Here is the timeline that the birth control pill had to go through in the courts before it became the de facto standard enshrined in law that required society and men to accept it. Please read these excerpts carefully and follow the links to the full articles to get a better understanding of why it’s so difficult to get any contraceptive (female or male) to market. Griswold v. Connecticut Argued March 29, 1965, Decided June 7, 1965 381 U.S. 479 (1965),[1] is a landmark case in the United States in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Constitution, through the Bill of Rights, implies a fundamental right to privacy. The case involved a Connecticut “Comstock law” that prohibited any person from using “any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purpose of preventing conception.” By a vote of 7–2, the Supreme Court invalidated the law on the grounds that it violated the “right to marital privacy”, establishing the basis for the right to privacy with respect to intimate practices. This and other cases view the right to privacy as a right to “protect[ion] from governmental intrusion.” Eisenstadt v. Baird 1972 Argued November 17–18, 1971, Decided March 22, 1972 405 U.S. 438 (1972), is a United States Supreme Court case that established the right of unmarried people to possess contraception on the same basis as married couples. The Court struck down a Massachusetts law prohibiting the distribution of contraceptives to unmarried people for the purpose of preventing pregnancy, ruling that it violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. “If the right of privacy means anything, it is the right of the individual, married or single, to be free from unwarranted governmental intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as the decision whether to bear or beget a child.” Carey v. Population Services International Argued January 10, 1977, Decided June 9, 1977 431 U.S. 678 (1977), was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court held that it was unconstitutional to prohibit anyone other than a licensed pharmacist to distribute nonprescription contraceptives to persons 16 years of age or over, to prohibit the distribution of nonprescription contraceptives by any adult to minors under 16 years of age, and to prohibit anyone, including licensed pharmacists, to advertise or display contraceptives. The Court held that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution does not allow a state to intrude on an individual’s decisions on matters of procreation which is protected as privacy rights. Even though these Supreme Court rulings have become the law of the land and they have had a major impact about the way people think about them the generation of men that matured into adulthood before the birth control pill were not as influenced by them. And the majority of them strongly disagreed with those rulings. Because they never really participated in the sexual revolution. Most of them were married and raising families of their own before the first wave of the sexual revolution started. They may have had a few cheap sexual affairs outside of their marriages over the years but they knew to be extra careful so they used condoms, *everybody called them rubbers back in those days. And that’s why they offer that bad advice – that doesn’t work to younger men in primary committed relationships. Basically their only answers to the problems of out-of-wedlock births, single mom homes and young men being forced into the baby trick trap are on self-restraint and religion. And those things don’t work either. Because they’ve been preached and tried over and over again. And they’ve failed over and over again for the last 50 years. The first step to solving any problem is correctly identifying it. And both generations of men the ones who came before me and the ones who came after have got that part right. But the next step to correcting a problem is applying the right solution to it. And that’s where both of those generations of men get it wrong. That’s because they came of age in one era or the other. Before the birth control pill or after the birth control pill. But fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it men like myself “ The Hybrid Era Men” came of age exactly right down the middle. And that gives us a unique perspective to see and appreciate both sides of the cultural divide. Because we were influenced at a very early age by what life was like before the birth control pill. As well as by what life was like after it. That goes back to why I started this article trying to explain the importance of the things you personally experience in life as opposed to the ones you read about in a book or on the internet. The only thing that needs to happen to solve the problems of out-of-wedlock births, single mom homes, the baby trick trap and the corrupt family court systems in the United States and the rest of the industrialized world is the widespread introduction and acceptance of a safe & effective undetectable male contraceptive. And I’ve made that my life’s work because that’s the only solution that will solve these issues at the root core of the problem. In fact these problems only started after the FDA approved the female only birth control pill in 1960. That never should have happened because when you give one person a technological advantage over another they’re going to use it eventually. That’s just human nature. Releasing an undetectable recreational sex drug, which is all the birth control pill really is to only one sex was irresponsible and dangerous and 50 years later society is suffering the consequences. What they should have done was release two birth control contraceptives. One for men and one for women. Or nothing at all. But that was then and this is now and we’re stuck with the mess they left behind so we’ve got to fix it. Of course we can continue to try and deal with out-of-wedlock births, single mom homes, the baby trick trap and the corrupt family court systems separately as we have done and failed for the last 50 years and expect a different result. Or we can try something new that will effect the root cause of all of these problems. And that is equal male contraception to female contraception. We’re living in the second decade of the 21st century and we’re never going back to the days of ‘Leave It To Beaver’ or ‘Father Knows Best’ that I grew up in. Women aren’t going back to be housewives and undetectable female contraceptives are never going to be taken off the market. And the vast majority of people don’t want it to. Myself included. We just need to understand that this isn’t going to be a quick and easy fix solution. Because our society didn’t get in this predicament over night. And we’re not going to get out of it overnight. But get out of it we will if we apply the right solution to the problem. And I know that solution is safe and effective undetectable male contraception that is equal to undetectable female contraception. |

"body": "Do you remember where you were on 911 (September 11, 2001)? What about April 4, 1968 the night Martin Luther King was shot down on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN? Or are you old enough to remember November 22, 1963 the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as his motorcade drove through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX on an unusually beautiful sunny day?\n\nEven if you don’t remember any of those historical events you can Google them or visit the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.org and discover all the details of exactly what happened on those days. And I am no different because my mind is filled with life experiences of all of the events I referred to above.\n\nThe earliest historical event I can remember is the JFK assassination that happened when I was only six years old. And that is equal male contraception to female contraception.\nWe’re living in the second decade of the 21st century and we’re never going back to the days of ‘Leave It To Beaver’ or ‘Father Knows Best’ that I grew up in. Women aren’t going back to be housewives and undetectable female contraceptives are never going to be taken off the market. And the vast majority of people don’t want it to. Myself included.\n\nWe just need to understand that this isn’t going to be a quick and easy fix solution. Because our society didn’t get in this predicament over night. And we’re not going to get out of it overnight. But get out of it we will if we apply the right solution to the problem. And I know that solution is safe and effective undetectable male contraception that is equal to undetectable female contraception.",
