It is a city made for walking. \n\nIn my case, I must confess, there is an additional aspect that comes into play as I on visits take time to wander its streets, stopping here and there to admire some of the old buildings pinched between the more modern highrises. It is that of nostalgia. \n\nI am an inveterate city stroller. It’s been so from my teenage years. \n\nI am a son of South Africa’s harsher northern climes, which is so culturally as well as politically and economically. On arriving in Cape Town as a young man to take up my first job, I was surprised at how relaxed folk seemed to be and how easy they seemed to get on with each other. \n\nI took to walking the city’s streets, stopping every so often to listen to people’s chatter and laughter. I never stopped marveling at the beautiful old buildings that the developers had mercifully spared, and I loved soaking up the historic atmosphere.\n\nThis, I kept reminding myself back then, was the Mother City. It was where the first European settlers arrived back in 1652, setting in train the intricate and often tumultuous events that shaped multi-racial South Africa.\n\nPart of my recent nostalgia trip took me up Government Avenue that runs the length of the Company Garden. This is where nearly four centuries ago a motley group of Europeans, on instruction of the Dutch East India Company, set about planting a garden to provide the company’s passing ships with fresh produce. There too the new media had pushed back the old order.       "body": "It indeed is a funny thing. But so many want to tear down the system for its results. It is the fabric of the system, the voter that is surely flawed, rather than the vote itself. Even in ancient Greek times they played with qualifying the vote. Besides the obvious down side, I believe that one should be able to do that. Surely if you want a say you should try and educate yourself as to the people and the issues ... but that I know is a slippery slope.",

      "body": "I have rarely found myself thinking more deeply about the concept of democratic election and what exactly it is that a vote means. \n\nIn my own country, South Africa, the trade unions, with support from the Communist Party, are staging mass protest marches. Their gripe is with corruption and the way the ANC’s Jacob Zuma administration is plundering public resources with the help of the Gupta family that not so many years ago arrived here from India.\n\nThe problem with the protests is that it is the already suffering public and the already suffering economy that are bearing the brunt of the disruption. Sometimes it is worse than disruption. How often does it happen that demonstrators vent their anger at government by destroying both public and private property. \n\nSurely the simple answer is to use the vote to register disagreement with those who are responsible. Sure, it does not always work in the aggrieved party’s favour, but that is what is meant by democracy.\n\nWe’ve indeed had good examples of what a quirky think the vote can be in recent times. \n\nWe’ve seen how it propelled Donald Trump into the White House, heralding an episode in American history that is as perplexing to the rest of the world as it is to most Americans themselves. \n\nWe’ve seen how it resulted in the British turning their back on Europe, unloading uncertainty upon the UK as it has upon the European Union . \n\nWe’ve seen how it has brought to the surface an element in Germany that all who remember the two world wars will be watching with a sense of discomfort, if not trepidation.\n\nWhat, I keep asking myself, is it that makes so many people exercise their vote, only to find themselves in so many cases blinking in shock afterwards at the result it’s produced.",

      "body": "There we were, joining young people in a wild dance in the forecourt of the old Mafia villa near Naples. It was weird to know that right there in that same place some people might have had less happy experiences, like getting kneecapped, or worse.  \n\nThe villa was one of several that in recent years had been confiscated from the Camorra, as the Mafia type is known that operates in Italy’s Campania region, with Naples as its headquarters.\n\n\n![DSCN0577.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNtbTr7eeqvYDPMU6NpKoZHrXFA9pSr2CLTQLTB1cq817/DSCN0577.jpg)\n\n*Dancing where the Mafia once presided.*\n\nThe building subsequently got assigned for use as a help facility for youngsters who had fallen on bad times. In addition to housing, they are given training in the arts, cooking, mechanics and such. They also get taught the region’s old dances and mountain music and songs as a way of nurturing their sense of belonging to society. \n\nThe girls were wearing brightly coloured longish dresses, and the boys neat outfits of a similar olden style. The smiles with which they served the delicacies they had prepared and the exuberance with which they pulled their guests into their dancing circle attested to the success of the program.\n\nIt was bright thinking on the part of the authorities to hand the house over for use by young people in need. The Camorra has over the four centuries since it came about integrated itself deeply into local society, exerting its influence in ways ranging from the subtle to the outright brutal. It would not want to turn public sentiment unnecessarily against it through acts of retribution aimed at young people in need of assistance.\n\nI visited the villa with a group of environmental journalists from different parts of the world who got shown by our Italian hosts how the crime **family** had added refuse disposal in the region of Campania to their wicked activities, with disastrous consequences for the environment and the people.\n\nWaste disposal has been a growing problem for Naples since the 1980. That is when the hoods stepped in. To save residents and businesses both the costs and the trouble, they would at cheaper prices collect their waste, including dangerous chemicals and heavy metals, and simply dump and burn it near roads in an area dubbed the *Triangle of Death*. \n\nBefore my journey, and preoccupied with the thuggery and thievery going on in my own country, I was only vaguely aware of the goings-on in Naples. It was positively heartrending to learn about the impact the Mafia’s behaviour was having on that exquisite landscape,  how the toxic fallout was fouling up the agricultural ground and the air, and how this was endangering people. \n\n![IMG_0352.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVaRzQu5FL1XXwSFpqhN9QWgZxWYQToyWwr3kztxJLVKD/IMG_0352.jpg)\n\n*Vesuvius as seen from the city of Naples.*\n\nSome leading Mafia members have been arrested in recent times. As demonstrated in its own telling way by that now happy villa we visited, the law enforcement authorities do indeed seem to be making headway in their fight against the *family*. One can only wish them strength to their hand.\n\nThe experience brought home to me in a rather touching way how different battles are being fought in different places all over the globe to stop the assault on nature and on the wellbeing if the human race.",
