| title | The Wealthy You #4: Considering Post-Retirement Needs |
| body | Hey everyone, Anyone else watching the football game? Close one tonight. So in my last post I finished by mentioning that you could count on other factors to improve the results of your financial independence calculations. We are going to dig into those and built onto the example we started in that post. #### Mortgage Payments If you are currently paying down a mortgage on your house, you will want to finish paying it off before thinking about early retirement. Once those payments are gone, the required percentage of your pre-retirement income required post-retirement will be significantly diminished. A big mistake that most people in today’s society make is to buy a house that is too big for their needs and too much of a financial burden. If you are able to find the cheapest property that will make you happy and fulfill your main needs and pay that property off over your capital accumulation period, it will make achieving financial independence much quicker. #### Student or other loans I am still paying student loans now, and they eat up just about 12% of my after-tax income. Unfortunately, I have 6 years of payments left. While some people might want to pay it off as soon as possible, I prefer to take advantage of the low interest rate I pay on that loan and save/invest more money. That being said, this 12% of my income won’t be needed anymore once this debt is paid off, so that’s 12% that won’t be needed for financial independence in the future. #### Kids Kids are obviously a big one. There’s a reason most people wait for their kids to be off to college, or even joining the workforce, before they retire. If you have kids and they will be able to take care of themselves by the time your plan on leaving the workforce, you will want to take that into account in your calculation as well. #### Back to our example We will stick to the one scenario going forward, where you earn 65k, live on 45k and save the other 20k, inflation is 2% and your average returns are 8%. This rate of return is arguably high, but it is definitely achievable with an aggressive risk profile and a bit of cooperation from Mr. Market. In my previous post we calculated that assuming 4% annual withdrawals you would need to accumulate $1,125,000 in 2019 dollars to reach financial independence, which, using the assumptions above, would take roughly 26 years. Now let’s see how this changes once we include the items above. Let’s introduce the following assumptions: you currently pay 5k per year for mortgage payments, and 8k per year for your children. Once those are expenses of the past, you will only really need 32k to maintain your current lifestyle. Now you might decide to increase your standard of living and go on more vacations and so on, but for the purpose of this example we are only concerned about maintaining the same purchasing power post-retirement as you had pre-retirement. So, 32k a year. Again, assuming 4% annual withdrawals, you now need to accumulate a total of… $800,000 2019 dollars to reach financial independence. This is quite a significant drop from the previous amount of $1,125,000. The most interesting part of this is now finding out how this translates in terms of years. Instead of taking 26 years for you to accumulate the required capital, it will take you roughly 22 years! So what do you know, financial independence is actually 4 years closer than you thought. 4 years is a lot of time to do what you love to do instead of going to the office every day. You may have expected a larger decrease in the number of years; the reason that isn’t the case is that much of the capital accumulation happens in later years due to compounding. Still, 4 years is pretty solid if you ask me! I hope this helped give you guys some more motivation to begin your journey to financial independence. If you enjoyed this post please comment below and resteem to share the knowledge! Enjoy today, William |

| title | The Wealthy You #3: Why Spending Less Beats Earning More |
| body | Hey Steemians, This year, I am really putting an emphasis on laying the foundations of my path towards (hopefully) early retirement. I have made some discoveries recently that have really given me hope that retiring within the next 20 years is an achievable target. In my next few posts I want to share some of this knowledge with you. Today I want to discuss why spending less beats earning more. Now, if you could get paid more to do the same work you are currently doing, that would obviously be the best case scenario. What I mean, however, is that the most efficient way to start working towards early retirement today is to find ways to cut spending. I used to think that it would be fine to keep spending the same way I always had and to get a second job or second income stream to pad my retirement savings. The reason why this doesn’t make sense is that the amount of money you will need to actually be able to retire will be much larger than if you had saved by living a less expensive lifestyle. A good way to look at this is by comparing it to what would happen in a playoff race. Let’s imagine you are fighting your division rival for the last playoff spot. Finding an extra stream of income to be able to save for retirement is the same as winning a game against a team in another conference, whereas spending less to save for retirement is the same as beating your division rival: you get a win and they get a loss so you are doubly ahead. What happens when you spend less to save more for retirement is that the amount of money you need to accumulate to maintain the same lifestyle post-retirement as you had pre-retirement will be significantly reduced! Let’s look at an example: Let’s assume that you earn 65k and spend 57k a year while saving 8k towards retirement. You decide that this isn’t going to cut it and that you should be saving 20k per year towards retirement so you are faced with two options: earn an extra 12k or cut spending by 12k. If we assume that based on your returns and on inflation you could live pretty much indefinitely on your nest egg by taking out 4% per year, we end up with the following required savings for you to be able to retire: Earn an extra 12k: $1,925,000 Cut spending by 12k: $1,125,000 You can see that while both figures are pretty large, one is significantly lower than the other. Choosing the option to cut your spending makes achieving your retirement goal much more realistic for the same amount of annual contributions towards your retirement fund. Following the example above, assuming 2% inflation and 8% average returns, your 20k annual contributions would be worth about $1,160,000 2019 dollars after 26 years (or just over $1,900,000 2045 dollars). This means if you are 30 today, you could afford to take early retirement at 56. Of course, more goes into this calculation. The good news is that most of it is positive in that it reduces how much money you will actually need to retire below the amount calculated above, meaning it would actually take less than 26 years to reach early retirement. We will discuss that in my next post. What do you think? Has this motivated you to rethink your spending habits or learn more about early retirement calculations? Let me know below and thanks for reading! Enjoy today, William |

| body | Hey, good to find another FIRE guy on Steemit. Here is another reason why saving a $1 is worth more than earning a $1. To actually put a $1 in your pocket, you technically have to earn alot more than a $1 because of taxes. Out of a $1 that you make, you get 22% taken out in federal tax(depending on tax bracket), 15.3% in FICA tax (your employee might pay half of that for you but if they didn't have to don't you think they can pay you more?), and something between 0-13.3% taken out by the state. You are left with something like 60cents out of your dollar when it's all done. |

| title | Why Spending Less Beats Earning More |
| body | Hey Steemians, This year, I am really putting an emphasis on laying the foundations of my path towards (hopefully) early retirement. Enjoy today, William |

| body | What's up Steemians! As I mentioned in my [New Year's Resolution post](https://steemit.com/life/@livewell/happy-new-year-2019-resolutions) yesterday, this year will be all about optimizing my financial situation as well as my health by cutting out the obsene amount of restaurant food I had been eating over these past few years. I promised to share my journey and the recipes I create along the way with you, and here is the first one of hopefully many delicious and nutritious recipes to come! I really want to challenge myself to minimize waste by putting together meals with the ingredients I have on hand, and so using the veggies I had left in the fridge and some chickpeas I cooked up yesterday after they had spent months collecting dust in the pantry, I put together this delicious meal. I'm not sure what you could call it, maybe a chickpea stew :) Here are all my ingredients ready to go. Got some chopped up carrots, onions and peppers, some diced tomatoes, chickpeas, garlic flower, and spices. If you've never had garlic flower I cannot recommend it enough. It's especially delicious when frying up some veggies, by itself or with soy sauce. I used it as a replacement for actual garlic in this recipe as I didn't have garlic on hand. In terms of spices, I used two teaspoons of smoked paprika, two teaspoons of chili powder, one teaspoon of ground cumin, and one teaspoon of garlic powder. I also tossed in a good measure of salt and sugar to round up the taste when it was cooking. Here's what it looked like in the pan. I didn't take pictures of the interim stages, but the cooking part was pretty simple. Just make sure you cook your veggies and garlic for a few minutes in a bit of oil before throwing everything else in as this really brings out the flavor. Once you have everything in there just let it simmer until everything is cooked well (the carrots took quite a bit of time in my case but if you choose to use different veggies it might not need to simmer much at all). As I also had about half of a cauliflower left over in the fridge I decided to make curry roasted cauliflower as a side. If you've never made it, or even if you think you don't like cauliflower, you have to try this it will definitely blow your mind! Basically you just break up the cauliflower in small bite-size pieces, toss some olive oil, salt and curry powder on there, and then get your hands dirty by mixing it all together. It should look something like this. Once it's good to go, throw it in the over at about 400 until it looks nice and golden like the picture below. I didn't time it but I'd say I had it in there for about half an hour, stirring it a couple times to get it to cook evenly. As you can see I also tried quite a few pieces as it was cooking :) And now, time to see the end result... Now that's a healthy, delicious meal! Hope you enjoyed this recipe and please let me know below if you have any suggestions that could make it better! Enjoy today, William |

| title | Happy New Year - 2019 Resolutions |
| body | What's up guys, It's been quite a while since I've been on here, it's good to be back! Let me start off by wishing all of you an amazing year for 2019, and I hope 2018 met all of your expectations! It’s that time of year again when we all make resolutions, and in a few weeks many of us will have forgotten about them already. I am hoping this year will be different! 2018 was a pretty big transition year for me and life got super hectic for a while, but now I’m finally settled and have more free time on my hands, leading me to the following resolutions for 2019: * **I will stop eating out so damn much** I am making it my goal to eat out no more than twice per week this year (including work lunches). I have probably eaten out about 8 times a week or so on average over the last few years, which really isn’t that healthy or good for saving money. With the extra free time I have these days, I’m planning to cook a lot more and really emphasize eating cheap, home-cooked, nutritious food. * **I will stick to a stricter budget** This really goes hand-in-hand with my first resolution. In fact, my first resolution is pretty much the result of me wanting to get my finances under control and start making some serious headway towards financial independence. I love food and I love eating out, and a huge portion of my disposable income usually goes towards restaurants. If I can stick to resolution #1, this one shouldn’t be a problem either. * **I will create at least 2 SteemIt posts per week going forward** I love writing as well as the sense of community on here. Life really got in the way for a while and now that I have more time on my hands, I’m super excited to be back. With the goals I set for myself this year, I think I’m going to have a lot to share with you guys. More specifically, I’m planning to focus my writing on my progress towards resolutions #1 and 2 in order to keep myself accountable, while also discussing various financial topics and sharing with you some (hopefully) delicious, nutritious, cheap recipes I find and/or create in my attempt to stay away from restaurants. So... If I manage to stick to these resolutions, you should hear from me at least 103 more times this year! I guess that’s it for now, but I’m super stoked for the year to come and I hope you guys are too. If you also have some resolutions for the new year, I’d love to hear about them below. Also, if you attempted any of these (or similar) resolutions last year I'd be happy to hear how you did and if you have any tips! Thanks for reading! Enjoy today, William |
