It seemed that all the anti cryptos were out in full force, crowing at being right. And it seemed in Bitcoin's setback, people were rushing in to fill the gap with their particular snakeoil brand of choice. Buy this! Invest in that!\n\nI find it the non stop bickering among professionals as to what the best commodity is disheartening.  The endless wrangling looks akin to something that would happen  in Washington...and we have enough of that already.\n\nTo which I ask, why not consider them all?\n\nNow, I fully admit, I am not smart enough to figure out where cryptos are going. Or stocks, Or mining. Or precious metals. I wish I could trade or short the market but I don't know enough to do so. So I don't play the market, I buy hard assets. I didn't realize bitcoin was a thing till after it was a BIG thing. So I joined this platform instead. I know that the market will probably crash before I can pay off my student loans. So I am paying down my college debt as quickly as I can, and I don't accumulate large amounts of debt outside of it. See what I mean? My point is a simple one. Instead of wasting time bashing a side, why not do what you can to ensure you and your family are ready? Time is running out. Of that I am certain. Something is going to derail the current status qo, war, economic destruction, natural disaster. Or all 3. And who else knows? With so many potential dangers, we should be trying to cover ourselves as best we can in whatever way we can. Not bickering over it. To the man with no money, his best bet may be buying some new tires for his car and a few extra cans of beans. For those with a little cash, hard assets may be their best bet. And for those who can trade the market, maybe that is a quick way for them to earn a buck or two. I try not to put my eggs in one basket in most things in life. I try to listen to everything economic related, even if I cant participate in it, so that I understand it better. I read articles I don't agree with so I can at least hear an opposing side. You know, like an adult who can think for themselves would. I may or may not change my mind based on the evidence presented. And I try and go from there.\n\nBut we aren't taught this skill in society anymore, and when we come across an opposing opinion, our tendency is to become hostile. Remember, those who are asleep will scream as loud as they can at an opposing viewpoint simply to avoid it. They don't want to wake up.  They want to be taken care of. We need to be leading by example to those around us. And nobody should be betting everything they have on one thing to save them. For many of us common folk waking up was shocking enough. Its not easy when you start this journey and now question everything you hear. Much less learn that everything you have been taught about money and debt was a big fat lie. Hence why I think there is such a defensiveness around one's particular asset of choice. It is the desperate death grip that comes from hoping against hope that this thing you have invested time in wont betray you. And all I can say to that is do the best you can, and try to help others. Cause at the end of the day, nobody knows for certain which asset will be left standing.",

The media was filled with memes and pictures of Gov Chris Christie's foray onto the beach. These memes while humouros, failed to lighten the moods of the workers who were sent home, and campers kicked out of the parks. Merchants near these parks lost money, and people had their plans disrupted. Whether you lean more left or right isn't really the issue here, although if you look through the media's eyes it is.  When you pull back and look at the big picture, you can clearly see the disintegration of our way of life before our very eyes. And no one seems to notice. Last weekend, instead of blaming all of the elected officials, depending on where you get your news , it was clearly one side vs the other. And the media was out front  fanning the flames in order to have us all looking the other way. But New Jersey wasn't the only state in the news. Earlier in the week we heard about the financial woes of Illinois and Connecticut.\n\nWhat surprises me most about all of this is the complete lack of caring of the average American. These events should be sending off red hot warning bells to everyone planning to live off their pension. Yet most people just shrugged it off and went back to focusing on their cookouts, with the attitude of \"well that's their problem\" or \"That's not going to happen here\"\n\nIt's EVERYONE's problem. Illinois Connecticut, and Jersey are just the tip of the iceburg. Even more conservative states like Texas have had towns and cities that cannot not pay public sector retirees, as we saw in Houston. So it is not just \"blue\" states with the problem. Realistically, even if your state is not broke, your town might be, or your county. And someone is going to have to make up for the shortfall. One thing is for certain, the problems aren't going anywhere.\n\nWhat we can expect:\n\nGovernment, whether local, county, state, or federal will continue this gridlock, and/or lurching from one crisis to the next. Whether its's funding or general political handwringing and finger pointing, you can expect more of the same. Nothing gets done, and whatever is done, is done at the last minute  to the detriment of the average person. \n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmc5MzH3xKBtXsaHuUyVpLerPT8Lpan76x4KPSbMAPDsNY/image.png)\n\nPensions will continue to dry up. One expert says payouts in Illinois could get as low as 30 cents on every dollar. Can you imagine only getting 30 cents of every dollar you are owed? If retirees are planning to live solely off their pensions, then quite frankly they are foolish. Those days are clearly over. The evidence is clear. Most states promised too much with too little. Even if it doesn't dry up completely, there is no guarantee someone can live off what they they will get, since it most likely will not be the full amount. If I was close to retirement, I would seriously look at other streams of income. And I would be doing that regardless of where I lived, since I know Illinois is not the only state with some serious budget issues.\n\nThere is no guarantee that you will get the money you paid into your pension. Most discussions I have with others circle around the fact that people believe that even if the government won't match them, they at least can access what they themselves contributed into their retirement. It's like their minds just cant accept any other alternative. Don't count on it. As we saw with 2008, when the government's back is up against the wall, they usually try to tax or charge their way out of it. In fact that's exactly what they legislator in Illinois did. They attempted to raise taxes dramatically. Thankfully the governor vetoed it. But sadly that probably means that retirees will just take a haircut on their returns instead. The money just isn't there. If  you fall into this bracket, its time to stop demanding fairness and start accepting it. No its not fair. But a lot of things in life are not fair. Better that you be ahead of the game then not. Start setting up your life to make sure you are protected when this happens. Because yes, it is going to happen, because it already has.\n\nIf you are a public sector worker, be prepared to possibly not get paid during these shutdowns. There is now debate whether those state workers in Jersey who were furloughed on Monday will get backpay. Sure its one day. But these people did no wrong. They have mouths to feed too. Christie's vacation along with the use of tax dollars to fly back and forth to Trenton look particularly elitist and out of touch in the face of so many who were told to stay home. But like the retirees, adaptation is key. You too may need to consider alternate ways of making money, or making sure that if you are sent home, you will be ok.\n\nEven if you are not a state worker, be prepared for a delay in service. Don't wait till the last minute to get anything done in this kind of environment. When governments shutdown, they close more then just the parks. The DMV, certain courts, and various other places won't be open. Nobody thinks about these things until they get kicked out of a park or cant get their license renewed, or a bridge gets shut down because repairs weren't done.  Keep up to date on what needs doing.  \n\nIn conclusion, you are probably on this site because you have some inkling of what the future looks like. Don't ruin that advantage with the stubborn belief that it just can not happen to you. In this environment nobody is immune unless they are below ground...Even then they might dig you up for the sake of imminent domain.",

With this type of mentality, inevitably the self reliance people come out of the woodwork to display their badassery to the \"poor average drudge who wouldn't last one day in the woods\". They have more guns and supplies then a zebra has stripes, but they'll be dammed if they'll share it with anyone. And I can tell you that I am personally over it. Other then being super annoying, this mentality is often dangerous as well. Sometimes being alone is great. Sometimes it means you fall down a cliff and have to saw your own leg off to survive, because you were stupid and went hiking alone.\n\nI have just moved into a new place. Its a condo which means I have neighbors. I am thankful to say that everyone I have met so far has been super friendly, welcoming me to the neighborhood and such. It got me thinking on how we as humans need community, and that if you try to go it alone, in a crisis, you'll probably end up failing.\n\nMany times we get this misconception that in the event of any kind of crisis, people are the enemy and we will be living by ourselves or with only a few people in a cabin in the woods, armed to the teeth. While people certainly do suck, a lot of people are simply doing their best to get by, and not interfere in the lives of others. And many people are still willing to help. I was unsure of the garbage pickup, who I could hire to mow my lawn, HOA meetings are and other things. I could have certainly sat in my house, refused to talk to anyone and probably would have eventually figured it all out. But why bother when I can ask the people who already know? I have a few coworkers who live on the other side of the development. I could have picked another place to live, but I feel better knowing they are nearby. In a word, I have community.\n \nThe truth is that few Americans can afford to even buy a primary home, much less a bug out location that is hidden and secluded. This means that short of a natural disaster that forces you from your home, you aren't going anywhere when SHTF. You may not even be able to get gas to leave. That's where community comes in. There is not a single person on this planet that can do everything on their own. Even these people you see living by themselves in the woods have to come to town sometime. In a SHTF scenario, at least initially everything will revert back to a barter system. Even a temporary shakeup like the one in 2008  could have people bartering services for a short period of time. That means that you'll need a set of contacts to barter with. And you'll need to know before something happens. During a crisis is not the time to try and get to know which one of your neighbors is cool, and which ones are Looney Toones. You don't have to be a besties, but it is nice to have a community where you are aware of what skills others have. It just never ceases to amaze me how many people think they'll go it alone or with just their family.  Learn which one of your neighbors is reliable, and learn to decipher which ones may be a threat. This may mean they guy next door or down the road, but know who your \"tribe\"is. It could mean your very survival.",

      "body": "While I haven't tried this particular method, I can say from experience that it is possible to take a tiny suburban backyard and turn it into a mini-Eden.  Building up and replenishing the soil is essential and can be the most time consuming thing but even on a lawn formerly doused with chemical fertilizers and pesticides restoration is possible. What were the results?\n\nFor those who don't know, the Back to Eden garden uses primarily woodchips in a layering method. It is supposed to mimic the way that it is done in nature. For example, in the forest, you would have some sort of natural layering occurring when the leaves fall. It became popular a few years ago when Paul Gautsch did a documentary on it. It is supposedly better for the soil, plants and the earth itself.  It requires less watering, and supposedly garners a bigger crop, while also avoiding the need for constant field rotation.I have researched it in depth, many Youtube Homesteaders back the method, but I'm excited to finally try it myself.  My first patch of land will be very small, as it is late in the season, and I'm not sure how much I'll be able to actually do. Obviously I am hoping that by this time next year, it'll be ready to go. I did see someone online doing it in pots which I found to be interesting. If you have any experience with this, please feel free to let me know your tips. Recently for me, that tool  has been the Instant Pot. \n\nIP mania seems to have swept the internet, and rightly so. Part pressure cooker, part rice cooker, part slow cooker, yogurt maker, and more, the Instant Pot has changed my life in regards to cooking. I can honestly say it is one of the few things to live up to its hype. If you are novice then this pressure cooker can help with easy, but favorable recipes. For the more experienced cook, it really helps you step up your game, and can save you time vs more traditional methods of cooking. What sets the IP apart from traditional electric pressure cookers is the multitude of settings. This really opens up the options of dishes you can make. If you are interested, you can find it most anywhere. I got mine on Amazon, and loved it so much I got it for my sister and her husband. I recommend the 7 in 1 version. I have found it to be by far the most versatile. By the way, I am doing this on my own accord, I am not being asked to promote the brand in any way.\n\nLets say you come home from a long day of work. The last thing you probably want to do is cook, but you are desperately trying to eat healthy.
