| title | Photos of My Trip To Costa Rica |
| body | Our first day in San Jos'e there was a parade. The people had walked for long distances with their carts to be in the parade. The house we rented. A nice quite location on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. This is the back area. We were there in the winter but it was hot enough to go swimming everyday. It is very easy to get sunburned. A friend lived near the pool and came out every day to visit. The dog, Sammy, came with the house Macaws came every evening to feed on nuts on a near by tree. We were driving down the road and these guys fell right out of the jungle and on to the road. An active volcano. That is smoke not clouds. Local wild life. A tram ride through the jungle. The Guide told us that this had once been a coffee plantation. If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica I am sure you will have a wonderful time. Beware, the people are fine people but very poor. There is a crime problem and people make money buy watching your car in a parking lot while you shop or eat. Be sure and pay them. If you are driving I suggest you rent one with a standard transmission. There is little flat land in Costa Rica and if you are driving you will find yourself climbing steep mountain roads. Also watch for landslides. The soil is very loose and a slide can happen at any time. Many people go the Costa Rica for dental care. You can get excellent care in San Jos'e and if you need extensive work done you can have a vacation and get your dental care for what it would have cost in the US. |

| title | Cooking With Essential Oils Cardamom Bread |
| body | I am new to essential oils. I have tried them several different way infusion, skin care, etc. I have been thinking about cooking with them. My husband loves cardamom bread. I have made it many times over the years using the seeds. I have not had the best of luck. Cardamom pods are hard to open and then you have to crush the very hard little seeds in side. I never really got the amount of flavor I wanted. So I decided to try cardamom oil. I use a bread machine and my recipe is a basic egg bread recipe from Better Homes and Gardens Bread Machine Bounty. My loaf was not the most perfect or beautiful but my husband says it taste great and is looking for another loaf. 1 Cup milk 1 Egg ( be sure and beat the egg before adding) 1 Tablespoon Butter 3 Cups Bread Flour (I use regular white flour) 2 Tablespoons Sugar 3/4 Teaspoon Salt 1 Teaspoon active dry yeast Then I added 12 drops of Cardamom Oil Add all ingredients to your bread machine. I use a medium crust. Next time I will use light crust. Bread with a lot of sugar require a lighter crust setting. I apologize for my poor photo quality all I had was my IPad and I am not sure if it was me or the IPad. |

| body | This is not my recipe and I do not remember where I got it but I have been using this for about 6 months. I love the Tide Pods in my HE machine but they are very expensive. In the past I made the liquid washing soap but I really did not like making it. This dry mix is easier to make and does a fine job. One recipe last me a year and I do about 2 loads a day. Depending on your load you use 1 to 3 tablespoons. I do not need any added softeners. It works great in my HE machine and it is always totally dissolved even in cold water. Mixing the ingredients so they are well mixed is the hardest part. I take a 5 gal. bucket and add each of the ingredients in small amounts mixing them as I go. Some people put all the ingredients in two plastic garbage bags, one inside the other and then mix by rolling the bag around. Of course you could always make a 1/4 or 1/2 recipe. You can purchase all of the ingredients from Walmart but I had to get the BIZ on line. 1 65 oz Borax 1 55 oz box Washing Soda (not baking soda) 1 4 lb box Baking Soda 1 60 oz BIZ (BIZ is enzymes and helps to remove organic stains) If you leave out the BIZ you will save about $7 1 5 lb (80oz) Oxi Clean 1 1-2 lb bag of Foca (you can use any detergent you want) Your total cost should be about $30. If you want to add something to make it smell like flowers you can add Purex Crystals. If you have any questions, please ask. |

| body | You have to treat high acid foods like apple sauce very different then low acid foods like meat. For low acid foods you need a pressure canner. That means any food with meat in it, like a soup. You need to maintain the pressure for your altitude. For example, 1001 to 2000 feet, use a 15 lb weight and cook 1 qt of meat for 90 minutes. Low acid foods, not canned correctly will not keep and are not save to eat. Always try to store all your canned foods in the coolest place possible, below 70F if you can. Your pressure cooker if fine for high acid foods. Please, do not preserve meat or beans in your pressure cooker, it is not safe. I am glad to help if you have more questions. |

| body | I use a large pressure cooker to can apple sauce (it's called bottling in the UK). Although I'd be very wary about canning meat in it, I might get more ambitious and try some soups and beans. It's great for apple sauce though as I get to use all the apples from my tree, which then gets used up in porridge mostly. |

| title | Tweet For the Birds |
| body | It is rewarding to feed our little feathered friends and they do come to depend on us. I have fed our birds for close to 40 years. I of course give them different kinds of seeds but along with the seeds I give them inexpensive donuts and my own mix that I call Tweet. This is easy to make and you can add things you have on hand. I start with Armour Lard. It comes in a bucket and I buy it at Walmart. It also comes in blocks. I use about 2 cups and to that I add about 2 cups of store brand peanut butter. I use the extra chunky. I use a 5 qt pot and melt the peanut butter and lard. After it is melted you can add any number of things. I save my egg shells crush them and add to the mix, any old cereal, old bread, any flour, some white sugar, they need lots of energy and no teeth to worry about. Do not use anything with salt like pretzels and please do not use bacon fat. When you have everything mixed in, thicken the mix with white flour. If you have whole grain flour on hand so much the better. Keep adding flour until it gets very thick so it will not run. It will get thicker as it cools. Now, how to serve it to our little friends? Hear are some ways I use. Form it into to a square, use a square plastic container. Place in the frig or freezer to harden. When hard remove from plastic and put in a suet feeder. Or form it into small balls and place in a flat feeder. This idea they really love. Take a grape vine wreath and press the Tweet into the wreath. They love standing on the wreath and eating. Another way they love to eat Tweet is to press it into a pine cone. Do not use one of the scented cones, we do not know what is use to make them smell so good. I press the Tweet into the cone and use some wire to make a hanger. I serve Tweet in different ways so it is available to different kinds of birds. This is a real favorite for the woodpeckers but they all love it. Here is a list of things I have added to my Tweet Flour white or whole grain Peanuts Egg shells White sugar Cereal Seeds Donuts Bread crumbs but make sure they are not salty Mealworms You can get them at Walmart in the bird food section I hope you give it a try and let me know how they like it. If you have questions, just ask. |

| title | Need To Lower Your Blood Sugar With Whole Grains But You Do Not Want To Buy A Grain Mill |
| body | There are several reasons to not want to use a grain mill. They are large, they make a lot of noise, they are expensive, and if you only want a small amount of flour they are a lot of trouble to get out and set up. If you only want a few cups of whole grain flour there is a better way. First of all the fresher your flour the better your baked product is going to be. And, if you are making bread using rye, it should always be very fresh. As soon as rye is ground it starts to turn bitter. The solution, a burr grinder. Yes! a coffee grinder but one that can hold more then a cup of flour and a choice of grinds. Use it only for grain and be careful. Burrs are metal and can over heat and warp. I grind about 1 cup of grain and then let it cool before grinding a second cup. You can get one for as little as $30 up to $100. This $37 one at Amazon would work just fine. I hope this encourages some people to try whole grains. You can store grain for years as long as it is dry and with a burr grinder you can have fresh flour anytime. If you have questions please ask. |

| title | Need To Lower Your Blood Sugar With Whole Grains But You Do Not Want To Buy A Grain Mill |
| body | There are several reasons to not want to use a grain mill. If you have questions please ask. |

| title | When Money Was Real |
| body | I remember a time when we did business with real money. It was a day before credit cards or Bit coin. We used checks but for the most part only to pay bills that had to be mailed. It was 1964 and a postage stamp was 5 cents. A gallon of gas was 30 cents. You paid for that gas with real money. Lets say you paid with 3 dimes. A gallon of gas today cost about 2.46 in New Hampshire as per Gas Buddy.com . Now the government has added many taxes on gas that we did not have in 1964 but lets see how those 3 dimes hold up against inflation and taxes. The melt value of US 90% silver 3 dimes today 1/9/2018 is $3.6719 and if you were to buy a roll of those dimes today you would pay about $1.28 for 1 coin before shipping. A roll of dimes in 1964 would have cost you $5.00 today that same roll of dimes will cost you $68.14 at Apmex.com with check or Bitcoin and $70.98 if you use a credit card. So how much gas would those 3 dimes buy you today? If we use the melt value those 3 dimes ($3.67) you could buy 1.49 gallons of gas. And lets remember much of the price of that gas is taxes we did not have in 1964. A gal of milk cost $.95 in 1964 today a gallon of milk cost $2.58 at Walmart. The melt value of the 95 cents today is $11.628. So the 95 cents that would buy one gallon of milk in 1964 will buy you about 4 1/2 gallons today. Lets say you had purchased 10 rolls of quarters in 1964 at the cost of 100.00 those rolls of quarters today would be worth over $1500. As you can see the value of silver has more then kept up with inflation and I believe that silver is undervalued. When I think of wealth I think what can I purchase with that wealth. If no one wants my paper dollar then it has no value. But metal always has some value. If the dollar loses it value and I go to a local farmer to buy some milk would he rather have my 90% silver or a promise of Bit Coin? Right now he might like the Bit Coin but in turbulent times I think he would prefer the silver. I know right now everyone is chasing the cryptocurrencies and I sure do wish I had purchased Bic Coin when I first heard of it. But even if I had been wise enough to buy Bit Coin I still would hold on to my silver. There is an old saying "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." That is my thinking when comes to wealth on the Internet. If it is not in my hands then do I own it? |

| title | Save Money With The Best Home Made Laundry Soap/ Detergent |
| body | This is not my recipe and I do not remember where I got it but I have been using this for about 6 months. If you have any questions, please ask. |

| title | Oh Darn! My Baking Power Has Gone Flat Again |
| body | In the old days women baked several times a week for their family and keeping fresh baking powder on hand was no problem. How many times I have been dismayed when my biscuits didn't rise. A quick check of my baking powder and sure enough, it expired 3 years ago. Now it is not the cost of replacing the baking powder it is the disappointment when my baked goods do not meet my expectations. Well I found the solution so I now always have fresh baking powder at hand. Baking powder is cream of tartar, baking soda and corn starch. I found that cream of tartar will stay fresh as long as it does not get wet. And baking soda has a very long life as long as it is sealed against odors and moisture. Now if you want you can mix a small amount of baking powder ahead of time to have on hand or simply add the baking soda and cream of tartar as you cook. You do not need the corn starch so leave it out unless for some reason you want to add it. If you mix it ahead of time, remember it can go flat over time just like your store bought. And remember 3/4 of a teaspoon will equal 1 teaspoon of baking powder. What is cream of tartar? Cream of tartars' chemical name is potassium bitartrate, and is a byproduct of wine making. You will find cream of tartar with the baking spices at your food store. After I open my cream of tartar I place one or two silica gel desiccants in the jar. 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar, and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda = 1 teaspoon baking powder. If you want you can add the 1/4 teaspoon corn starch. So there you go, a simple solution that our grandmothers knew. Testing Your Baking Soda Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to a few tablespoon of white distilled vinegar. If it’s fresh, the mixture should fizz and bubble furiously. Testing Your Baking Powder Add 1/2 teaspoon baking powder to a few tablespoons of warm water. The mixture should fizz moderately if the powder is fresh. No reaction, time for new. |
