| body | This is a really inspirational post! I have recently started up my cake business from home too, but at the moment I am still working full time. We don't have kids yet but when we do, I am hoping to work from home too. It is nice to see that other people have 'made it' in the way that I aspire to! It is sad to hear that others have such negative comments, but as you say - each to their own! I hope you continue to be so successful! |

| title | Where Did My Baby Girl Go? |
| body | https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/16/funny-baby-girl-cute-baby-imagesd9254.png Why do we, as parents, feel such pain where our grown babies make mistakes? I have always been a mother who wanted her kids to learn from their own mistakes. When they're little, I don't stop them from making the wrong choice, unless they're going to get physically hurt. That's the way they learn. I have asked many times, "Now what did you learn from this?" Why is it so different when they grow up? Why is it so hard to stand back and let them learn from their mistakes? I'm not even talking about major things, like drugs or an abusive relationship, but smaller things. Things like, "don't buy that cheaper car that needs a ton of work, spend the extra money up front and get one that runs good." Daughter: "But mom I can have my boyfriend fix it and save a lot of money". Sure enough, months later, the car still doesn't run and the boyfriend doesn't even know what's wrong with it. Long story short, going to spend a lot more money either on another car or a mechanic. Not a big deal right? Nobody hurt, she lost some money, and learned a hard lesson. But why does it cause me so much pain to let her learn this way? I gave her my advice, why is it so hard to just sit back and let her do her own thing? It wasn't this hard when she was growing up? Is it because when she was young, I was there to make sure that the wrong choice didn't hurt her? Or is it because, now that she's grown, I feel that she no longer needs me? And if so, why does this bother me? Isn't that the goal of parenting, to raise kids in such a way that they have the confidence to be independent? That they have the drive to make their own decisions and the desire to succeed? On the flip side of this, there comes joy and pride when I see the young woman she has grown up to be. She's not perfect of course, but she is a healthy, smart, beautiful young woman with a strong will and a hard head. She reminds me of someone else I know, she reminds me a lot of myself at her age. And I think I can remember making some hard headed choices of my own, and my mother giving me advice I didn't take. Maybe this is the way it's supposed to be after all :) |

| title | Homeschooling While Running a Business....Love It! |
| body | https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/15/jake059de.jpg Running a business and homeschooling children are both full time jobs in themselves, so is it possible to do both successfully? YES, YES, YES!!! There are challenges at times, especially in the beginning, but you find what works for you and run with it. The rewards that come will make it all worth it! *So is there a magic formula that one should follow?* No. Each person will have their own formula, depending on your type of business, your personality, and the needs of your children. I will share a couple of things that have worked for me and my family. Keep in mind that I run a cake business and homeschool 3 children, ages 7, 8 and 17. On average, I work about 50-60 hours a week on cakes. My magic formula consists largely of two things: don't be a stickler about schedules, and not all learning comes from a book. **SCHEDULES** Since my business hours change from week to week, so must our homeschool hours. When I first started homeschooling, I thought that the kids had to be on a strict schedule, just like public school. It didn't take long to figure out that this does NOT work for us, and that's ok. We have become pros at adapting, and yet getting the work finished. Instead of schedules, we have weekly goals. These goals are never the same, they change based on the week's work load. Some weeks we get a little done, other weeks we get a LOT done. When it's all said and done though, our yearly curriculum is finished well ahead of time. **LEARNING** In reality, very little of what we use in day to day life comes out of a book. I have learned to make everything a learning experience for my kids, and it will serve them well in years ahead. When I go shopping for my weekly supplies, they go with me. When I go to meet my potential wedding clients, my 17 year old daughter goes with me. When I deliver and setup cakes, they go with me. They learn to budget expenses, interact with people on a business level, and how to properly deliver a finished product. These are experiences you can't get by taking Business 101. Learning comes from having fun too. We go on field trips often as part of our schooling. Museums, aquariums, nature walks, the possibilities are endless! Even our family vacations can be full of learning. And since we homeschool, this can be many times a year and we just take our work with us. I mean, who doesn't mind a few hours of math in the evening if you get to listen to ocean waves in the background? We tailor our learning to our environment, if we are going to the beach we take along a book about sea life to read in the evenings! Any other homeschool parents? Leave a comment about what works for you! Until next time, Linda |

\n\n**LEARNING**\nIn reality, very little of what we use in day to day life comes out of a book. These are experiences you can't get by taking Business 101.\n\nLearning comes from having fun too. We tailor our learning to our environment, if we are going to the beach we take along a book about sea life to read in the evenings!\n\nhttps://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/15/jake059de.jpg\nHere is a picture of one of last year's Christmas time art projects, it was really simple and really fun. \n\nAny other homeschool parents on Steemit? Leave some comments about what works for you!\n\nUntil next time,\nLinda",

| body | These are some amazing sand sculptures! I was going through our old vacation pictures and found these. They were taken while we were on vacation in 2010. We went on a cruise to the Bahamas and had spent the day before departure at Cocoa Beach in Florida. Our hotel, the Radisson, was hosting this sand sculpture competition. I'm glad I wasn't a judge, they are ALL AMAZING!!!! https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC05859f22e4.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC0586013aad.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC05837d2819.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC05844ae0ee.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC05858ed17d.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC05875242bd.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC05838ab5e2.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC058495cfb1.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC0585170927.jpg https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/12/DSC058549a156.jpg Anybody have a favorite? :) Linda |

| title | Why Do My Ads On Facebook Get More Attention When Posted By Someone Else? |
| body | https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/08/04/ScreenShot2016-08-04at3.41.48PM8b30c.png
I do a lot of advertising for my cake business on social media, primarily Facebook. It has by far been the most successful form of advertising for me since I can show pictures of my work.

I have recently noticed something that puzzles me. When companies form some kind of common bond and advertise for each other, those ads get so much more interest than when advertised by the original company. Even when they target the same audience, same age range etc.

I'll give you some examples. I have a friend who runs a photography studio and we do a lot of trading, I'll make a cake for her son's birthday in exchange for an hour photo session for my kids. We also advertise for each other on our pages. When she advertises a picture of one of my cakes, it gets hundreds of likes and comments. I can run the same ad, targeting the same audience and it will perform about half as well. Again, I can advertise one of her photo shoots on my page and get the same results.

Here's another example. Me and my husband are selling our home and we have it listed through a real estate agency. As well as using her company's website, my agent has a Facebook group set up just for her own listings. She ran a paid ad, highlighting the features of our home. It received several likes and comments over the course of 4 days, I was pleased with the result. Since interest has since wained, I decided to share the listing on my cake page, also using a paid ad. It has only been an hour and it already has more shares than her original. Wow! We are targeting the same location, age range, and interests!

Any thoughts on why this is?
|
