| body | Easter falls very early this year, on the 1st April in fact... and no, that is not an April fool!  The good thing about an early Easter is that all the ‘after Easter’ procrastination and excuses that we fitness professionals hear year upon year are put to bed nice and early, clearing the way for a long and strong build up to optimal summer health. Yes, in a perfect world, we would be super healthy all year round, but in reality, these little milestone dates are useful. January is always a push fitness-wise, the key is to make this push last as long as possible, hopefully well into February (the average is 2.5 weeks so just do the best you can!). Then, Easter is the next push. People always make an extra effort after Easter as they feel that they finally have an unobstructed view of summer, and also, the prospect of having to actually wear a bikini or (unintentionally) tight swimming shorts, which seemed so far away in January, crystallises... The lacklustre last half of the year is often boosted with a September ‘back to school’ pump, to try and shift the classic ‘all-inclusive’ stored calories. In my experience however, the last half of the year, in particular from October through to December, often descends into a blur of people stating to each other how ‘time really flies’ in between nights out and an increasingly unhealthy diet until Christmas and New Year return and the whole thing repeats. So, I guess what I am saying, in a rather long winded fashion, is that we are nearing THE best time to get fit in the year. Forget New Year, forget September, this is it. And this year it’s nice and early, giving us the best possible chance of smashing Q2 like never before. In fact, the date of Easter has so conveniently split the year into quarters, that I want you to get a piece of paper out now and do, possibly your first ever, Q1 review! What went well, what didn’t, what are you proud of and what not so much, and how did you do towards your health goals... make some notes, then get a new piece out and write Q2 at the top. Now brainstorm everything you intend to do this quarter, businesses do it, so why shouldn’t people do it too?! Write out plans, objectives, goals, people to see, jobs to do, places to go AND of course what you are going to do for your health and fitness to ensure you look and feel your absolute best when summer arrives. Because Easter is so early, this Q2 wave of awesomeness you will be riding come the end of June can easily be carried forward another 4-6 weeks until the actual summer holidays are upon us, which is an extra bonus, and you will hardly even notice it. So there it is, keep the January wave rolling as far as you can then relax, plan, and get ready for the best 3 months of health, fitness and life ‘sorting out’ that 2018 has to offer! | body | Definitely agree, there is a lot of fear-mongering out there and a lot of people investing in bitcoin who have never really held an investment through a dip or a series of dips, so they panic and sell at every opportunity. If you are a seasoned investor and see long term value in the crypto space then a dip , or multiple dips will not bother you. it is just like stock market investing, except it plays out about 100x faster from peaks to troughs! January is often a bad month, but maybe not enough January's have past to make that a firm judgement yet, however I can't see it dipping lower this year than the lows we have seen this last few weeks. This is because there are some real technologies out there linked to the altcoins in particular plus ether and litecoin with some genuine usefulness and value, some of the tech is very exciting and the coins go alongside that. When people say it has no intrinsic value, they may be partially correct for bitcoin, but not for a lot of other great projects and coins. there is a hell of a lot of cash sitting on the sides all over the world right now, people have divested stocks and shares because that market is so overvalued it is a joke, and interest rates are so low in the US and UK that no one is particularly attached to their cash in the bank earning nothing..... so once the stock market dips and once the crypto space smartens its act up a bit, less hacking, more security, more reliable and faster transfers of coins, easier to access cash on exchanges, easier to swap back to fiat etc... then I think we will see the mother of all inflows into crypto in 2018 at some point.... watch this space.... and until then, stop checking your coins and HODL. |

Consider the following metabolic pathway for the digestion of food.  Or look more closely at metabolic pathway for glucose. There are even more detailed pathways for protein and fat.  My question is this: Do you see “Calories” mentioned on any part of these simplified pathways? We’ve spent the last hundred years detailing the intricacies of human metabolism. And nowhere in all of this work do you see the word “Calories”. Your body just doesn’t give two flying f***s about calories. It’s not the common currency. Here’s the bottom line truth. ‘Calories’ is NOT a physiologic concept, just as ‘weight of food’ is not a physiologic concept. Both are unit borrowed from physics. Longing for mathematical precision, obesity experts have severe ‘physics envy’, and try to shoehorn the useless physiologic concept of calories into a human biology that does not accept it. The same applies to the weight of food, or the volume of food. Your body doesn’t weigh the food coming in, and doesn’t care. Eating a pound of lettuce and a pound of sugar produce completely different metabolic responses. In one case, the body may burn off that energy, and the other case, it may decide to store that fat. Weight is not the common currency. Remember that a common currency only has power if both parties agree to its use. To understand weight loss, we need to understand what our body ‘cares’ about. The answer is clearly not ‘calories as seen clearly on the detailed charts above. The answer is ‘hormones’, predominantly, but not only insulin. Hormones run everything in our bodies. Our body gains or loses fat according to detailed hormonal instructions from our brain. The rise and fall of insulin is the main stimulus to weight gain. So, food that stimulate insulin are typically more fattening (cookies). Those that do not (kale) are typically not fattening at all. If the body cares about insulin (and other hormones too, but mostly insulin), then we need to use the common currency, speak the common language of the body. Insulin. Instead we use ‘calories’ and don’t understand why we can’t lose weight. Our body doesn’t comply because it has no idea what we are telling it. Imagine a tourist asks you for directions in a language you don’t understand. You tell him to go to the subway, but he doesn’t understand and instead goes to the coffee shop. So you speak slower and louder, but he still doesn’t understand and goes to the restaurant. Our body understands the language of ‘hormones’ and we are speaking ‘calories’. Since our body is not likely to learn the language of ‘calories’, we need to learn the language of ‘insulin’, by translating foods into insulin effect instead of calories. You can estimate a foods insulin effect based on net carbs (carbs- fibre) + 0.54 protein. Even then, this formula only accounts for about 50% of the known insulin effect, so there is still much more we need to learn. The least insulinogenic diet is low carb, high fibre, moderate protein, high in natural fats. In other words, a real food, LCHF diet. The same goes for counting carbohydrates. You body certainly responds to carbohydrates, but it doesn’t count them. Some carbohydrates will stimulate insulin and others will not. That means that all carbohydrates are not equal. Highly processed carbohydrates are very stimulating to glucose and insulin. Minimally processed carbohydrates have very little glucose or insulin effect.  So remember, the common currency of the body is not calories. But neither is it dietary fat, protein or carbohydrates. It’s not fibre. It’s not ketones. The only currency the body really cares about is insulin. If you want to lose weight, reduce insulin. If you want to gain weight, increase insulin. That’s the common currency. Since our body only cares about insulin, we better learn the insulin effect of foods. Sugar will stimulate insulin. It will not activate any of the other satiety hormone. It does not activate stretch receptors in the stomach (satiety signal). It does not activate peptide YY, cholecystokinin (satiety hormones). A piece of steak, on the other hand, will do all those things. Therefore, you feel full after eating the steak, but not sated at all with the soda.\n\nSo, why do we pretend that all calories are equal? There’s nothing equal about them. Calories are not the common currency of the body. It’s like we’re walking around with a bunch of sea shells in our pockets and trying to buy a hamburger in Philadelphia. Everybody wants dollars and we want to pay in sea shells. The burger guy don’t care about sea shells. Our body don’t care about calories.\n\nConsider the following metabolic pathway for the digestion of food.\n\n\n\n\nOr look more closely at metabolic pathway for glucose. There are even more detailed pathways for protein and fat.\n\n\n\n\nMy question is this: Do you see “Calories” mentioned on any part of these simplified pathways? We’ve spent the last hundred years detailing the intricacies of human metabolism. And nowhere in all of this work do you see the word “Calories”. Your body just doesn’t give two flying f***s about calories. It’s not the common currency. Here’s the bottom line truth. ‘Calories’ is NOT a physiologic concept, just as ‘weight of food’ is not a physiologic concept. Both are unit borrowed from physics. Longing for mathematical precision, obesity experts have severe ‘physics envy’, and try to shoehorn the useless physiologic concept of calories into a human biology that does not accept it.\n\nThe same applies to the weight of food, or the volume of food. Your body doesn’t weigh the food coming in, and doesn’t care. Eating a pound of lettuce and a pound of sugar produce completely different metabolic responses. In one case, the body may burn off that energy, and the other case, it may decide to store that fat. Weight is not the common currency.\n\nRemember that a common currency only has power if both parties agree to its use. To understand weight loss, we need to understand what our body ‘cares’ about. The answer is clearly not ‘calories as seen clearly on the detailed charts above. The answer is ‘hormones’, predominantly, but not only insulin. Hormones run everything in our bodies.\n\nOur body gains or loses fat according to detailed hormonal instructions from our brain. The rise and fall of insulin is the main stimulus to weight gain. So, food that stimulate insulin are typically more fattening (cookies). Those that do not (kale) are typically not fattening at all. If the body cares about insulin (and other hormones too, but mostly insulin), then we need to use the common currency, speak the common language of the body. Insulin.\n\nInstead we use ‘calories’ and don’t understand why we can’t lose weight. Our body doesn’t comply because it has no idea what we are telling it. Imagine a tourist asks you for directions in a language you don’t understand. You tell him to go to the subway, but he doesn’t understand and instead goes to the coffee shop. So you speak slower and louder, but he still doesn’t understand and goes to the restaurant. Our body understands the language of ‘hormones’ and we are speaking ‘calories’.\n\nSince our body is not likely to learn the language of ‘calories’, we need to learn the language of ‘insulin’, by translating foods into insulin effect instead of calories. You can estimate a foods insulin effect based on net carbs (carbs- fibre) + 0.54 protein. Even then, this formula only accounts for about 50% of the known insulin effect, so there is still much more we need to learn. The least insulinogenic diet is low carb, high fibre, moderate protein, high in natural fats. In other words, a real food, LCHF diet.\n\nThe same goes for counting carbohydrates. You body certainly responds to carbohydrates, but it doesn’t count them. Some carbohydrates will stimulate insulin and others will not. That means that all carbohydrates are not equal. Highly processed carbohydrates are very stimulating to glucose and insulin. Minimally processed carbohydrates have very little glucose or insulin effect.\n\n\n\nSo remember, the common currency of the body is not calories. But neither is it dietary fat, protein or carbohydrates. It’s not fibre. It’s not ketones. The only currency the body really cares about is insulin. If you want to lose weight, reduce insulin. If you want to gain weight, increase insulin. That’s the common currency.
