| body | Yeah well done for selling your stuff! I look forward to seeing more of your portraits if you post some. The surreal one you’ve put up looks good. I don’t really follow or look up to any traditional artists to be honest. I’m kind of in my own bubble when I draw because it’s timeless. No need to keep up with new trends. I recently got a job where I had to do some portraits in the style of Stanley chow which was fun. I respect his cool graphic style. Totally different from this stuff though. |

| body | Thank you for the advice! I usually use harder pencils for outlines and very light shading. I used to paint more and have had a couple of successful sales but it's very hard to get consistant pay. Japan must be very inspirational, is their any artists out their you look up to or are inspired by? Anyway good luck to you and wish you all the best from one artist to another. It's nice to see a fellow artist who does portraits on Steemit. |

| body | I just picked up a sketchbook. Didn’t think much about the paper. I’m in Japan and I think Japanese paper is very good although the sketchbook I’m using is no different to the stuff I used in England. I found a solution to the smudging problem is using H pencils instead of B and I actually like the hardness. When I first started drawing I hated H pencils. Totally the opposite now. I used to put a piece of paper under my drawing hand when I used B’s. Don’t need to worry to much about that now. I don’t tire of portraits. Until I’m as good as I can possibly be I’ll keep doing them. I love faces. A bit of an aesthete when it comes to faces and the human form which might be my driving force with art. This stuff is just for my own pleasure. I do freelance digital illustration for pay but recently got into drawing again because I wanted to make an online course as a kind of venture. |

| body | What paper are you using? I like the texture of it. I have been trying to get back into drawing as of late. I just find it difficult to get started. Also I have noticed I struggle to shade with my hand above the paper as I don't want to smudge what I have put down. Do you ever get tired of drawing portraits? I used to draw a lot of portraiture also painted many too. I tend to use gridding and freehand for proportions depending on how difficult the pose/angle is. At the moment I am just drawing surreal faces and things. Anyway good luck with your drawing as it looks like it's getting there. Hair can be daunting I find it's just because it takes so long to do. Is this for a project or client? |

| body | In this technologically advanced age it's become a lot easier to record and immortalise a moment. Through photography and film we can ruminate and reminisce past events. The recording of an event starts to take precedence over the enjoyment of a moment. Not a day goes by where we don't see people taking photos of their meals for instagram or looking through their phone at a live performance to stream it online. I do not exempt myself from this as I am equally as guilty and ask myself the question "is this really an issue or just how things are now?" During my second year of university I was painting portraits on synthetic material when my tutor asked me "Why are you not painting on canvas? Your paintings will last longer and will be less likely to fade and flake off." I simply explained to him that I wanted a certain kind of effect that can only be achieved by using synthetic fabrics. For him it must have been maddening to see paintings on such a material that will not do any favours to it's longevity. Another question he asked was, "How will I sell a painting that will fade and possibly crack in 20 odd years?" The answer is I have other means of selling the work through photographic prints. I can now allow the original to be an impermant piece of artwork and let the recording of it help with it's longevity in order to sell the idea. Like a pre-recorded live performance. I'm sure many who love the beatles but are too young to have ever been amongst the crowd wish they could have been. I don't find this a pity but exciting. It's exciting to know that you will always be living and experiencing impermant moments in life. There are times when you're the only one who will experience an event take place as no one is around to see it. I have plenty of these experiences like the time I walked down a canal and saw a kingfisher drop down from a tree and snatch a fish from the water. Or sometimes you will have an isolated experience with a friend or family member. At times you may feel like living vicariously through another person as they seem to have a more exciting life than you but just take a moment and think of times that only you have witnessed and ever can as the moment has gone. At the end of my degree show I based my exhibition around this idea of impermanence. At the time I was looking at a lot of Zen buddhism. I'm not religious and I find a lot of the ideas around buddhism very inane and troublesome. However at the time I was looking at the Buddhist ideas around suffering and imperminance. I also looked at paintings by Ken Currie about sickness and health aswell as the video artist Bill Viola who had work in the same vein as Currie. Impermanence, that's what the work at the top is about. I may do another more in-depth post about my degree show work at a later date as it involves notions and ideas about the corporeal and incorporeal. |

"body": "\n\nIn this technologically advanced age it's become a lot easier to record and immortalise a moment. Through photography and film we can ruminate and reminisce past events. The recording of an event starts to take precedence over the enjoyment of a moment. Not a day goes by where we don't see people taking photos of their meals for instagram or looking through their phone at a live performance to stream it online.\n\nI do not exempt myself from this as I am equally as guilty and ask myself the question \"is this really an issue or just how things are now?\"\nDuring my second year of university I was painting portraits on synthetic material when my tutor asked me \"Why are you not painting on canvas? Your paintings will last longer and will be less likely to fade and flake off.\" I simply explained to him that I wanted a certain kind of effect that can only be achieved by using synthetic fabrics. For him it must have been maddening to see paintings on such a material that will not do any favours to it's longevity. \n\nAnother question he asked was, \"How will I sell a painting that will fade and possibly crack in 20 odd years?\" The answer is I have other means of selling the work through photographic prints. I can now allow the original to be an impermant piece of artwork and let the recording of it help with it's longevity in order to sell the idea. Like a pre-recorded live performance. I'm sure many who love the beatles but are too young to have ever been amongst the crowd wish they could have been. | body | I remember 10 years ago now when I was just starting out at college and I asked my art history teacher a similar question about originality. He said to me that originality comes naturally even if what you create seems cliche. For example we all experience love but each person loves differently. Same with hate and pain we all hate and feel pain as we're human and it's a cliche but it all is slightly different. My teacher said to me if you just look at how many people have painted and drawn skulls in art you'd think that Damien Hirst was wasting his money making one out of diamonds. The point is that like you said it's irrelevant. Think about all the different covers of famous songs that have become successful some even being more popular than the original. Just because the concept and idea isn't original doesn't mean the perspective or approach can't be. Do we stop loving because we have experienced love before? No! I think a lot of artists get very bogged down by the idea of originality. They have to be the first to have thought about something or to bring something into being otherwise it's not exciting. I just don't think this is true. |

| body | One thing that's always interested me about art is it's process of changing the functions of ordinary objects. In this instance a chair nailed to the ceiling becomes a usless chair as no one can sit on the ceiling unless they're strapped to the chair. Now the chair takes on a different meaning. The perception of the object has to change due to the surrendering of it's function. Can you now call it a chair if it no longer functions like one? So what is it? Also now that you have photographed it, it's gone through another process removing it another step away from a chair. Joseph Kosuth One and Three Chairs may help to explain what I am talking about here. This is a concept art piece that involves three chairs. In the middle sits a chair on the left is a photograph of a chair and on the right is a dictionary definition of a chair. You could say that all three are chairs but one only actually functions as a chair. You have a visual representation of a chair (Photo) and a written code of a chair (Dictionary definition) I'd argue that what is most interesting about your photograph is the manipulation of perception. First you ruin it's function as a chair by nailing it to the ceiling making it into a hanging ceiling object. Then taking a photo of it removing it one step away from the object hanging from the ceiling and making it a visual representation. Now if you turned the photo upside down it becomes a visual representation of a functioning chair again. I know you have other ideas about your photo but I just wanted to share this little thought about perception using your work as a basis. I hope you understand and found it interesting as it interests me. |

| body | Okay so in my first post I briefly mentioned a child mannequin that I used to prank my house mates with. This is how the story goes: One fine glorious morning I awoke and began my journey to university to become the greatest artist this world has ever known. While I was there I decided to go to the wood workshop to make some frames to stretch canvas over. Along came a techniticains who asked me if I wanted a mannequin. I at first declined as I did not need a mannequin and thought who on earth would want that. As my day drew nearer to the end and I got all my frames made for the day I began packing up my stuff. I then spotted the mannequin leaning up against a load of old stretcher wood ready to be thrown into the skip. All of a sudden I had the brilliant idea to prank my house mates when they come home. I always was home before they were as they finished their shifts later than mine. So naturally like the little psycho I am, I wrapped up the mannequin in black plastic bags and walked through town with it under my arms all the way home with distressed looks from the general public. As I got home I thought to myself "where is the best place to hide this?" I didn't like going into peoples rooms and I thought the living room and kitchen was too obvious. The head did not come off so my plan to leave the head in the fridge was foiled. I ended up just leaving it in the shower and waited in my room for my house mates to come home. Mwahahaha! I waited quite a while but sure enough my first victim came through the door. I kept waiting... and then... all of a sudden... "OMG!!! WTF!!!" Hahahaha! My first house mate ended up being pranked and was mildly angry but then quickly was like "Omg let's prank Jon" So we ended up putting the mannequin underneith his bed. I was a little uneasy about this one as I did not like going into other peoples rooms however I had an accomplice this time around so felt a little more okay with it. Sure enough Jon came home and went up to his room and almost had a heart attack and had to be rushed to hospital... I am just kidding everybody was fine no one had a heart attack however he was scared shitless. After the pranks the mannequin ended up downstairs in the living room for a while and I had some mates over for drinks. Obviously they spotted the mannequin and one of my mates asked me "WTF is that!?" I replied "umm... a mannequin ofc". They then replied "NO that!" I looked at the mannequin and noticed a piece of tissue from when it was in the bathroom managed to get fucking stuck to the arm of it. My friend then yelled out "DIRTYTISH!" and from then on my nickname at Uni was DirtyTish aka Tish for short. |

| body | Hi, I'm new to Steemit and would like to introduce myself with a late night drawing. I usually draw late at night as I struggle to go to sleep. Maybe it's because of all the weird shit I draw. At university I had a painting of a blue crying man at the foot of my bed above a fire place and some weird discoloured child mannequin resting against a wall from the prank I pulled. (I will most likely make a post on "the prank" soon as it's creepy and hilarious. Also I have a photo of it) Needless to say my girlfriend at the time was a little creeped out, I know my friends were. I would say I have always been a little odd and introverted but have always loved to express myself through fine art. I hope you continue to follow me as I continue to draw and paint new things. Please feel free to comment and ask me anything as I love questions. |
