| title | When Should You Order Bees For the 2018 Season? |
| body | When Should You Order Bees For the 2018 Season? Introduction: - The hype around bees has been enormous this year and it’s left a large group of people wondering what their next step should be. Where do I get a beehive? Where in the world do I go to buy bees? Do I go to a beekeeper? Can I buy bees from a stranger at the grocery store? When is it okay for me to purchase them? Let’s answer all of these questions for the upcoming 2018 season! If this is the first article you’re reading in this series and you would like to start from the beginning, click [HERE](https://steemit.com/honey/@lemm/why-are-bees-important) Where do I buy a Beehive? - I’ve seen this question on the internet a lot lately. What type of hive should I buy? Where do I buy it from? The simple answer is that you can buy any hive that catches your eye. The only variables with beehives are the 1) Type of hive, and 2) the type of wood. Most commercial beekeepers use standard pine boxes. We’ll get more in depth with this in another article so stay tuned! Where can bees be purchased? - I share the opinion that a majority of long time bee experts hold and that’s that bees should be purchased from the area they will be harvesting in. You want your bees to be used to the plants and flora around you so they are not confused about their surroundings. I recommend that you contact a local beekeeper or apiary to buy your bees. Local bees are not only cheaper but it supports your local businesses. Who knows, maybe you can turn your purchase into a mentorship so when you have a bee related problem you have someone to talk to! On the chance that all of your locals are grouches, you can order bees on the internet from multiple sites. (I’m not going to list any of them because I haven’t ever ordered bees online.) Make sure you contact them and make sure they are okay with shipping long distance. Also, don’t forget that your area could have strict agriculture and livestock laws. Read up on all of your local laws before making a purchase! When should I buy bees for my first Beehive? - Beekeeping usually starts after the last freeze of Winter or the start of spring when all of the nectar producing plants are rising up from their slumber. The ideal time to start a hive is at the start of spring when you have new growth on plants and bees are no longer dormant. Once you’ve purchased your bees from a local apiary or beekeeper, it shouldn’t take long for them to become acquainted with their new home. Conclusion: - Don’t be afraid to join a local beekeeping club or organization to educate yourself on the in’s and outs of beekeeping. Education is key when you are messing with high value creature such as bees. The older generation of beekeepers love lending a helping hand so don’t be shy. If you enjoyed this post and found it informative, feel free the check out the first post in the series of an ongoing series [HERE](https://steemit.com/honey/@lemm/why-are-bees-important) If you happen to have a question about a specific topic I’ll be happy to help if I can! |

| title | My Reddit Secret Santa Gift Arrived! |
| body | I've been an active Redditor for a few years now but I never signed up for Reddit Gifts until this year! I decided to sign up for Secret Santa and join in on the season of giving. I was a Santa for a younger boy who wants to become a comic book artist. I saw some of his art from his Reddit posts and to b e completely honest.... some of it looked amazing. He linked an Amazon wishlist and it had a few Vinyl Records on it. I gave them all a listen and found one that I really loved. I hope it can help him during his long hours of creating! My Santa was so sweet and had someone make want I asked for! I'm really into bees and beekeeping so I asked for a custom made beehive sign with the name "Honex Industries" ( named after the honey factory in The Bee Movie) Opening this gift really made my Christmas. I'm on a little Christmas vacation so I can't resize the images properly, but here are a few imgur links. [Package In foam](https://i.imgur.com/yyiZxj2.jpg) [Cute wrapping paper](https://i.imgur.com/BsZoEEz.jpg) [Actual Sign](https://i.imgur.com/ESBf9bw.jpg) Maybe we can petition to get a Steemit Secret Santa next year! I think a lot of people would really enjoy that. Maybe even other little events like post card trades, or snack trades. Also, if you're interested in reading more about bees I'm writing a mini-series about them! [Here](https://steemit.com/honey/@lemm/why-are-bees-important) is the link to the first article. Feel free to follow to be able to see them when they go live! |

| title | Why Are Bees Important? |
| body | # Why Are Bees Important? [Source](https://unsplash.com/@andreasonda) ## Five Reasons Bees Are Important: ### -40% of the world’s food supply relies directly on pollination. Your favorite fruits, vegetables, and even your late night snack could rely on the pollination of bees. The flowering fruits and veggies that you make last minute trips to the grocery store to pick up would be gone without cross pollination. You’re probably wondering “aren’t there other forms of pollinators?” Well of course there is but none of them trump the Honey Bee! A grasshopper, although it is considered a potential pollinator, will never transport as much pollen as a bee will in its lifetime. Honey Bees hold a very important role in our ecosystem. Take care of them. ### -Health Benefits of Honey are too good to pass up! 1. Honey is an amazing immune system booster. Every morning you can take a spoonful of honey from your local Apiary and it will have such an effect on your sinuses. After a week, you’ll say screw your daily allergy medication.. I’ll take honey instead! 2. This next one isn’t something that has been proven in science yet, but it is believed that honey helps with cancers and heart disease. If you’re worried that you could run into these health troubles, it wouldn’t hurt to start taking a daily dose of honey. 3. It helps with stomach ulcurs too! I personally have troubles with stomach ulcurs. As i’m writing this my stomach is in pain but when I make a little honey tea, or a spoonful my stomach calms down. For all of you that struggle with stomach ulcurs I would strongly recommend trying honey on top of your bland diet that you’re most likely on. ### -A Beehive Adds An Attraction To Your Garden. Most people that are afraid of bees have never been in a controlled environment with a hive and an experienced beekeeper. Reaching out to a local apiary would help so many people get over their fear of bees. They aren’t meaning to hurt you when they sting. They are only protecting their hive. Once you are used to bees and have taken it upon yourself to become educated in the subject, you can add a personal hive to your garden and watch your plants prosper! ### -Bees help brighten up your flower garden and increase crop yields. Bees play an important role in garden health. As mentioned earlier, the Honey Bee is a major pollinator of the world. This extends not only to crops like cucumbers and green beans but also to your favorite pink roses that you buy every year for your mother’s birthday. Having your own backyard beehive will have amazing effects on your garden, so good that you’ll wonder why you didn’t have one sooner. If you think you have too many tomatoes and cucumbers now, just wait until the bees give back in double! ### -The Sweet Reward of Honey, Honey Comb, Wax, and Propolis [Source](https://unsplash.com/@kimix) Unbeknownst to some, you can actually harvest more than honey from a beehive. The following is harvestable from a beehive: 1. Honey - sweet, thick liquid produced by a colony of bees as food 2. Honeycomb - used as storage for honey and brood. They are wax capped and can also be used as a chewing gum as long as you don’t swallow it. 3. Wax - harvested from honey combs. It is used to cap honey and brood in a honeycomb or brood comb. 4. Propolis - made from bee spit and tree wax, Bees use this glue to paste the frames and fill holes in their hive walls. All of these harvestable materials can be sold to people all over the world! Local honey is the best honey. Some apiaries sell honey upward of $15 a pint! ## Conclusion: We need to stand up and help these bees. Without our help they will fall to infestation of mites, pesticides, and other harms that we are causing to them. As a side note, I’m considering making a little beekeeping series to promote bee health and bee education for the Steemit platform. Comment below if you have any questions you would like answered and I’ll get back to ya as soon as I can. If I find a question asked multiple times I’ll make an article about it! | title | Why Are Bees Important? |
| body | # Why Are Bees Important?
