| title | Are zoo's actually necessary in the 21st century? |
| body | A zoo defines itself as a an "establishment which maintains a collection of wild animals, typically in a park or gardens, for study, conservation, or display to the public". This a quick simple summary of what a zoo is. I'm gong to be exploring in more detail to what zoos are being used for and overall answering if they are a necessity. One of the main purposes of having zoos today is for education purposes. Many schools and colleges here in the UK take students to zoos to educate them. A few years ago I was taken to a zoo as part of my biology A level, as at that time we were exploring the classification and taxonomy of animals. We were shown my zookeepers how they classified animals, and taught the taxonomy of a few animals, as well as being allowed to explore the zoo ourselves. However, realistically the educational part of this visit was all taken part in a classroom that could have been done at the college, it took less than an hour, with the majority of the time was just us being able to look at the 'cute' animals. Other people may have found there visits very educational to them, but personally I did not. There is also the argument that if zoos are to educate people when they are visiting why are there cases of animus being killed purely because they couldn't breed. An article on livescience.com discussed this topic in which they used the example of a "young and healthy' giraffe being killed at Copenhagen zoo. So this brings up the argument are animals there for educational purposed or purely looked at as "breeding machines", that are disposed of when they can't be used. After discovering this case I began to look into zoos disposing of animals for similar reasons. According to a BBC article Copenhagen zoos (which was was being looked into due to the giraffe being killed) scientific director was quoted saying "its done everyday", this was seen as a slight exaggeration on his part, however he does go on to say that its only done "when its necessary" (yet I don't think anyone can argue that killing that giraffe just because it couldn't breed would be classed as necessary). Copenhagen zoo isnt the only zoo known to do this, other danish zoos are also known to be quite open about discussing the animals they have culled, one zoo having culled two lions a week or so before Copenhagen killed one of their giraffes. As for the rest of Europe although its hard to find information as the EAZA ( European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) doesn't actually publish deaths, births or really very much information of each animal. However the executive Dr Lesley Dickie estimates somewhat between "3000 and 5000: are "management-euthanised' in any given year. This is apparent across the world, culling animals that are not sick/in pain but because they've just become "unuseful'. However breeding is a very important part of zoos (although obviously conservation doesn't make killing animals that can't breed acceptable) when it comes to conservation. Many animals are now becoming endangered/extinct due to things such as habitat destruction or overhunting (which I will discuss in more detail in another blog) and zoos are sometimes the only place certain animals can be found or where the majority of certain animals population can be found. Zoos help conservation through things such as breeding programmes, research, and reintroduction programmes. Obviously conservation is very much important with many species completely vanishing if it wasn't for zoo/conservation programmes, and this is why creating breeding programmes is such an important aspect of zoos. Breeding programmes mean that they can begin to try and reproduce more endangered and vulnerable animals, even if it means they have to stay in captivity instead of being in the wild. Wouldn't you rather see the animal in captivity than to not exist at all? Its not always the case where they are only found in the captivity, there are also reintroduction programmes that try and make them present in the wild again. However there is very limited cases of this happening, but you have to think that in many cases is there much point in reintroducing them, if what caused them to become extinct is still a problem. Reintroduction programmes have worked in the past, for example the Golden lion tamarin was classified as critically endangered and then down listed to endangered due to reintroduction efforts. There were 146 captive-born golden lion tamarins, all from 43 different institutions (41 being zoos) that had been successfully reintroduced within 21 years (1984-2001) in Brazil. Now around one third of the wild population are a descendant of the reintroduced animals (with 1000 estimated to be in wild today). One issue with reintroduction programmes is they can be very difficult and take a lot of time and funding to get right. This is why funding to conservation causes is very important, whether this is donations within zoos or charities for this cause. So with all this to consider, are zoos necessary today? In my opinion there are aspects of zoos that are very important today. Im very supportive of conservation efforts whether this is through charities helping or through zoos and there research. However the majority of animals that are found in zoos are not endangered animals and they aren't being reintroduced to the wild. One thing I came upon when looking up about conservation and reintroduction programmes, was the idea that if nothings being done in the wild to protect these endangered and vulnerable animals, captive breeding won't make a difference. An article on sciencedaily looked into this evaluation. In this article they quoted Dr Paul Dolman, from UEA's School of Environmental Sciences, who said "Captive breeding can reduce motivation and resources for conservation in the wild, with disastrous consequences". He was also quoted saying "Captive breeding can offer a last chance when species face imminent extinction, but ultimately depends on re-establishing a population in the wild. This has proved successful for some high-profile species, but in many cases it has not". This brought me back to the point I briefly touched on early that if the issues that caused them to become endangered or extinct In the wild aren't sorted then reintroduction programmes can't be successful for many species. Personally I believe that zoos can be educational in some ways, especially when it comes to conservation. However a big majority of zoos animals aren't vulnerable. I believe that zoos and conservation efforts/programmes should be used to create breeding programmes as a last resort when there is conclusive evidence that if this doesn't happen the animal will become extinct. Realistically more needs to be done in the wild to improve conservation, the direct source of where these animals live should be a first priority. This is not me saying zoos should not exist, I believe zoos should be home to the many species that are endangered and on the verge of becoming extinct, I also believe in breeding programmes and reintroduction programmes (they are very important to being able to bring animals back into their natural habitat). However I don't think they should be there merely for people to be entertained, here zoos have the opportunity to educate people of all ages of whats being done to these animals thats causing them to become so endangered. The more people that become educated on this and start talking/protesting for change the more likely change will begin to happen (turning a blind eye achieves nothing). So to conclude, I believe zoos should be helping animals that are endangered, they should be educating people on the severity of endangerment and what is causing it. I don't think its necessary to have any and every wild animal in zoos, but just the ones that need saving. Reintroduction programmes are something that definitely needs to be used and looked into more. Although its nice to know that there are animals that are extinct or on the verge still being kept here on Earth due to zoos, I would much prefer to one day be able to see them myself in the wild. Overall I believe its time for zoos to change and develop! |

"title": "Are zoo's actually necessary in the 21st century?",
"body": "\n\n\nA zoo defines itself as a an \"establishment which maintains a collection of wild animals, typically in a park or gardens, for study, conservation, or display to the public\". This a quick simple summary of what a zoo is. I'm gong to be exploring in more detail to what zoos are being used for and overall answering if they are a necessity. \n\nOne of the main purposes of having zoos today is for education purposes. Other people may have found there visits very educational to them, but personally I did not.\n\nThere is also the argument that if zoos are to educate people when they are visiting why are there cases of animus being killed purely because they couldn't breed. An article on livescience.com discussed this topic in which they used the example of a \"young and healthy' giraffe being killed at Copenhagen zoo. So this brings up the argument are animals there for educational purposed or purely looked at as \"breeding machines\", that are disposed of when they can't be used. After discovering this case I began to look into zoos disposing of animals for similar reasons. According to a BBC article Copenhagen zoos (which was was being looked into due to the giraffe being killed) scientific director was quoted saying \"its done everyday\", this was seen as a slight exaggeration on his part, however he does go on to say that its only done \"when its necessary\" (yet I don't think anyone can argue that killing that giraffe just because it couldn't breed would be classed as necessary). However the executive Dr Lesley Dickie estimates somewhat between \"3000 and 5000: are \"management-euthanised' in any given year. This is apparent across the world, culling animals that are not sick/in pain but because they've just become \"unuseful'.\n\nHowever breeding is a very important part of zoos (although obviously conservation doesn't make killing animals that can't breed acceptable) when it comes to conservation. \n\nObviously conservation is very much important with many species completely vanishing if it wasn't for zoo/conservation programmes, and this is why creating breeding programmes is such an important aspect of zoos. Breeding programmes mean that they can begin to try and reproduce more endangered and vulnerable animals, even if it means they have to stay in captivity instead of being in the wild. Wouldn't you rather see the animal in captivity than to not exist at all? \n\nIts not always the case where they are only found in the captivity, there are also reintroduction programmes that try and make them present in the wild again. \n\nSo with all this to consider, are zoos necessary today? In my opinion there are aspects of zoos that are very important today. Im very supportive of conservation efforts whether this is through charities helping or through zoos and there research. However the majority of animals that are found in zoos are not endangered animals and they aren't being reintroduced to the wild. One thing I came upon when looking up about conservation and reintroduction programmes, was the idea that if nothings being done in the wild to protect these endangered and vulnerable animals, captive breeding won't make a difference. An article on sciencedaily looked into this evaluation. In this article they quoted Dr Paul Dolman, from UEA's School of Environmental Sciences, who said \"Captive breeding can reduce motivation and resources for conservation in the wild, with disastrous consequences\". He was also quoted saying \"Captive breeding can offer a last chance when species face imminent extinction, but ultimately depends on re-establishing a population in the wild. This has proved successful for some high-profile species, but in many cases it has not\". This brought me back to the point I briefly touched on early that if the issues that caused them to become endangered or extinct In the wild aren't sorted then reintroduction programmes can't be successful for many species. Personally I believe that zoos can be educational in some ways, especially when it comes to conservation. However a big majority of zoos animals aren't vulnerable. | title | Shark finning!!! |
| body | Shark finning refers to the removal of shark fins, while the remains of the shark is discarded back into the ocean; while often still alive, because it has no fin the Shark can not swim effectively so it will either sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of suffocation or eaten by predators. Shark finning at sea enables fishing vessels to increase profit and can increase the numbers of sharks that are harvested for their fins, as they only have to transport the fin, which is the most profitable part of the shark; but this means that they kill more sharks, because their vessels can then transport more because they don’t have the full weight of a Shark to carry. Some countries have banned this and require that the whole shark should be transported and be brought back to a port before being de-finned. But the fact that this is allowed is a disgrace; for most species of shark are endangered or vulnerable according to their conservation statuses. Shark finning has increased since 1997 largely due to the increasing demand for Shark fins for things such as shark fin soup and traditional cures. The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s shark specialist group has said that shark finning is one of the most serious threats to shark populations. The estimates of shark fin trading businesses are between US$540 million to US$1.2 billion (2007). In the US Shark finning is prohibited, some regard the whale shark and basking shark as trophy species and are $10,000 to $20,000 for a fin. Shark specialists have estimated that 100 million sharks die annually for their fins, so that those who like to collect parts of animals can say they own a shark fin that cost a shark its life, for know good reason. |

| title | The endangerment of the rhinoceros!!! |
| body | Today very few rhinos, survive outside national parks and reserves. Two species of rhinoceros in Asia- Javan and Sumatran are critically endangered. A subspecies of the Javan rhino was classified as extinct in 2011 in Vietnam. There is still a small population of Javan rhinos that cling for survival on the Indonesian island Java. A successful conversation effort has helped the third species of Asian rhinos the Greater one horned rhino (or Indian rhino) to increase their numbers. Their status was changed from endangered to vulnerable, but is still poached for its horns. In Africa, Southern White rhinos were once thought to be extinct but now thrive in protected sanctuaries and are classified as near threatened. But the Northern white rhino subspecies is believed to be extinct in the wild and only a few captive individuals remaining in a sanctuary in Kenya. Black rhinos have doubled in number over the past two decades from their low point of 2,480 individuals but total numbers are still a fraction of the estimated 100,000 that existed in the early part of the 20th century. Threats Habitat Loss Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra is thought to have one of the largest Sumatran rhino populations, but is losing forests due to conversion for coffee and rice by illegal settlers. In southern Zimbabwe, privately owned rhino conservancies have been invaded by people with no land. This reduces the amount of safe habitat for rhinos and increases the risk of poaching and snaring. Disease In the recent years four Javan rhinos, including one young adult female, are thought to have died from disease, probably transmitted to wild cattle in the park and then subsequently to the rhinos. Illegal Wildlife Trade Although international trade in rhino horn has been banned under the convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora, since 1977 demand remains high and fuels rhino poaching in both Africa and Asia. Although poaching is illegal it still occurs. The main market is now in Vietnam where there is a newly emerged belief that Rhino Horn cure cancer. Rhino horn is also used in other traditional Asian medicine to treat a variety of ailments including fever and various blood disorders. It is also used in some Asian cultures as a cure for Hangovers. |

| body | Yes, they can and this been known to happen, but not usually in 'mainstream' zoo's. But usually places that do help injured or new born wild animals are organisations such as charities thats purpose is to help species to learn how to survive in the wild again, but this may not be specifically for just endangered species, although im sure there are organisations thats purpose is to help endangered species offspring survive in the wild. But sadly the majority of zoo's purpose is to not help species learn how to survive in the wild, but merely for human entertainment! |

| title | Over the years has attitude towards animals changed??? |
| body | Zoos, game reserves, circuses, horse racing, aquariums and marine parks are just a few of the industries that involve unnecessary cruelty to animals in the 21st century, but have the conditions of these industries improved over the years? One of the first known event to use animals for human entertainment was the roman games in which animals are forced to fight each other to the death, this is criticised in our modern world, yet dogfighting, roosterfighting and bullfighting are all still present in the 21st century. Although both dogfighting and roosterfighting are illegal in this country, it does still occur in Britain. Dogfighting is not illegal all around the world, and on average 16,000 dogs are killed each year. In the 19th and 20th century, animals were locked in small cages, for human entertainment in zoos or for personal collections for the upper classes; wild animals were sytolen form their natural habitat and placed in overly small cages which were designed more the safety of the public than the comfort of the animal. However is this still the case for zoos in the 21st century? People would assume that conditions of zoos have improved, over time, yet animals are still locked in small enclosures that are inadequate for their requirements. Some would argue, zoos help animals by breeding endangered species. Although they are breeding these endangered or vulnerable animals, they would be unable to survive in their natural environment. This is due to them being co-dependent on zookeepers for things such as food, and they are unable to fend for themselves and be independent. Due to over hunting, destruction of habitat and the exotic pet trade, many species have been driven to near extinction, because of the negative impact humans have had on these animals. Therefore if not driven to near extinction by humans it would not be necessary for these animals to be kept in zoos for breeding. Conditions in many zoos have been criticised as being inhumane and sometimes outright cruel in our 'modern world', with Humboldt penguins at Scarborough sea life centre being prescribed anti-depressants because they are so unhappy. This is most likely due the low living standards and sheer small size of their enclosures. In 2003, San Diego Zoo and Tampa's Lowry park zoo imported 11 captured African Elephants from Swaziland. So even the biggest zoos steal form the wild, and this is occurring in the 21st century, where we are supposed to be helping endangered animals, not stealing them form their natural habitat. However over the years there has been laws passed to try to help zoo animals such as the Animal Welfare Act which helps to protect the welfare of individual zoo animals, but this act is not always followed. So, doesn't this prove that cruelty to animals in zoos and other industries that use animals have not improved much, in some cases you could argue its worse in the 21st century; with animal cruelty now being covered up so zoos such as San Diego don't receive bad publicity, but occasionally the cruelty that occurs in these zoos are leaked, showing us what zoos are really like. |

| title | Bullfighting!!! |
| body | Definition of Bullfighting: The sport of baiting and killing a bull in an outdoor arena, with spectators. Before the bulls are even sent into the ring they are given disadvantages such as their horns being shaved to keep them off balance or will have petroleum jelly rubbed into their eyes to damage their vision. Bullfighting typically occurs in Spain. In a typical bullfight- men on horses will enter the arena and drive lances into the bulls neck and back muscles. This will stop the bull form being able to lift its head and defend itself, they will twist and gouge these lances so that the bull will lose a significant amount of blood. The matador will enter on foot and will distract the bull will running around him and plunging brightly coloured sticks with harpoon points on the end into its back. When the bull is weakened from all the loss of blood, the matador will run the bull in circles making it become dizzy and stops chasing them. Lastly the matador after provoking the exhausted bull with a few charges, will try to kill the bull with its sword. If he misses, an executioner is called to kill the exhausted bull. The dagger is supposed to cut the bulls spinal cord, but sometimes even this can blundered leaving the bull conscious and paralysed this bull is then chained and dragged out of the arena by horses. If the crowd is happy with the matador the bulls tail and ears are cut off and given to him as a trophy. A few minutes later a new bull enters and the same cycle happens again. This so called "sport" or tradition is unnecessary and inhumane, and is not needed in modern society. Bullfighting needs to be ended. |

| title | Shark Finning!!! |
| body | Shark finning refers to the removal of shark fins, while the remains of the shark is discarded back into the ocean; while often still alive, because it has no fin the Shark can not swim effectively so it will either sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of suffocation or eaten by predators. Shark specialists have estimated that 100 million sharks die annually for their fins, so that those who like to collect parts of animals can say they own a shark fin that cost a shark its life, for know good reason. |

| body | More than being a consequence of leaving the EU, I would suggest that this is a sad symptom of our collective human-centric attitude to everything in life. Indeed it seems that the time and place and way for humanity is every time, every place and every which way. This is not to say that humans are not experimented on also. The self-elevated field of pHarma-backed medicine does so upon a day to day basis through prescriptions. The results of these experiments are often poorly documented since the primary backing motive is to financially exploit a condition concerned rather than to cure it. At least, unlike the animals used in the OP-mentioned post, these human experiments are more often afforded choice than not - even if they may not directly consent to experimentation. |
