بصريّة في مملكة الحيوان، لكنَّها لا تنسى وجهًا على الإطلاق.\n\nفعلى سبيل المثال، أبلغتْ «Carol Buckley» في محميّة الفيلة في مدينة «Hohenwald» في ولاية «Tennessee» الأمريكية أنَّ الفيل «Jenny» المقيم في المحمية أُصيب بالذّعر وأصبح من الصعب السيطرة عليه عندما قُدّمَ الى الفيل الجديد «Shirley» آسيويّ الأصل عام 1999.\n\nحين تفحّص الاثنان بعضَهما بواسطة خرطوميهما، أصبح «Shirley» مُفعمًا بالحيويّة، وكما تبيّن لنا فقد قام الصديقان -القديمان على ما يبدو- بلقاءٍ عاطفيٍّ جديد.\n\nاتَّضح فيما بعد أنَّ الفيلان كانا يعبران الطريق ذاتَه منذُ سنوات.\n\nعرفتْ «Buckley» أنَّ «Jenny» كان قد أدّى عروضًا في السيرك المتنقل «Carson & Barnes» قبل أن يأتيَ الى المحمية عام 1991، لكنها لم تكنْ تعرف الكثير عن خلفية حياة «Shirley»، وعندما بحثتْ قليلًا اكتشفت أنه كان متواجدًا في نفس السيرك مع «Jenny» لبضعة أشهر، وذلك منذ 23 عامًا !!\n\nاعتقد العلماء أنَّ إمكانيّات الفيلة المميّزة في التذكر تلعب دورًا مهمًّا في مساعدتها على البقاء.\n\nوطبقًا لبحثٍ أُجريَ على الفيلة في حديقة «Amboseli» الوطنية في دولة كينيا الإفريقيّة، فالفيلة القائدة للقطيع على وجه الخصوص لديها مخزنٌ من المعارف الاجتماعيّة، والتي بالكاد تستطيع عائلاتها الاستغناء عنها.\n\nهذا وقد اكتشف باحثون من جامعة «Sussex» في إنكلترا، أن مجموعات الفيلة التي كان قادَتُها بعمر 55 وسطيًّا استطاعت الاحتشاد للدفاع بشكل أفضل من تلك التي تقودها فيلةٌ بعمر 35 عندما تعرَّضتْ لهجومٍ من قبل فيل غريب عنها.\n\nجاءت عالمة النفس والسلوكيّات الحيوانيّة «Karen McComb» لتكشف السبب وراء ذلك؛ فقالت أنَّ الفيلة على معرفةٍ بأنَّ الغرباء يبدؤون بشجارات مع القطيع والتي من الممكن أن تؤدي إلى أضرارٍ كبيرةٍ.\n\nودرس باحثون آخرون ثلاثةَ قطعانٍ من الفيلة خلال فترةٍ من الجفاف الشديد عام 1993 في حديقة «Tarangire» الوطنية في تنزانيا، فوجدوا أنَّ الفيلة لا تميّز وتتذكّر بعضها فحسب، إنّما تتذكّر أيضًا سبلًا لمصادرِ طعامٍ وشرابٍ بديلةٍ عند تعرُّض مناطقها للجفاف.\n\nاستنتج الباحثون فيما بعد أنّ الفيلة المتقدّمين في السنّ تذكّروا جفافًا كان قد حصل في الحديقة واستمر بين عامي 1959 و 1961، وأنَّ قطعان الفيلة قد حافظت على فتات الطعام المتبقّي بالهجرة إلى مناطقَ بعيدةٍ وافرةِ العشب.\n\nكما اختبر العلماء هذه الذاكرة بوضع عيناتِ بولٍ أمام إناث الفيلة اللواتي تفحّصنَها بعنايةٍ بواسطة خراطيمهنَّ، وتصرَّفْنَ بغرابةٍ عندما وصلْنَ إلى عينةٍ لا تنتمي لأيٍ من أبنائهنَّ الصغار، والتي من المفترض ألّا تكون موجودةً هناك.\n\nوقال عالم النفس «Richard Byrne» من جامعة «Saint Andrews» في اسكتلندا: «إنَّ معظمَ الحيوانات التي تتجوّل في قطعان – كالغزلان مثلًا – ليس لديها أدنى فكرة عن هويّة الحيوانات الأخرى في القطيع، بينما تعرف الفيلة بشكلٍ شبه مؤكَّدٍ كلَّ عضوٍ في قطيعها».\n\nدرس الكاتب وعالم الحيوان «Iain Douglas Hamilton» الفيلةَ منذُ ستينات القرن الماضي، وهو مؤسّس جمعية «احموا الفيلة-«Save the Elephants في مدينة نيروبي في كينيا.\n\nويروي أنه في بدايات مهنته كان لديه علاقةٌ قويةٌ بأنثى فيل في حديقة «Lake Manyara» الوطنية في تنزانيا لدرجة أنّه كان بإمكانه المشي بالقرب منها في البرية.\n\nلكنه ترك المنطقة عام 1969 ولم يعد إليها إلا بعد أربع سنوات؛ حيث أتت إليه أنثى الفيل وتصرفت معه بنفس الطريقة، واستأنفا نزهتهما وكأنّ شيئًا لم يكن.\n\nيقول
