bodySUBJECT: Muslim Women’s Views of “Women’s Rights” ![51d6d6c0b5dccb0ed7811ba8512131ccc697627f.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmS66MFFDziz1CZFxfgqU9Gvx2QoDqyZCFhexw2ckKF2tP/51d6d6c0b5dccb0ed7811ba8512131ccc697627f.jpg) Photo courtesy of thecommentator.com Politics Political involvement of women in the Middle East is very limited but nonetheless existent.  In concerning women’s rights in Egypt, there have been numerous complaints and organized women’s activists on this particular issue.  The new government in Egypt, The Muslim Brotherhood, has been a developing limitation to women’s rights.  Although the Muslim Brotherhood allows women to run for parliamentary elections, they place them at low end positions or support them with weak campaigns. The women in these positions are almost always the wives of the leaders who lack any of the skills or qualifications which makes the rest of Egyptian women’s chances to win limited. This makes the group appear to be respecting women rights; in reality, it is doing the opposite by ignoring the Quranic law which liberates women.  The neglection of proof in the Qur’an reveals the patriarchal society that is still embedded in Egypt and most places in the Middle East; although, not all Middle Eastern descendants exhibit this behavior. Dalia Ziada is an Egyptian liberal human rights activist who has a growing concern for women in Egypt. Dalia ran a survey entitled, "Is it Good for Egypt to have a Female President?" outside polling stations and surveyed 1453 people, including 634 women. The answer for the survey question was "100% no."  Several Muslim women have been told for a long time that they are worthless and not capable of expressing themselves on a political platform. However, the tide is changing and more women in Pakistan, Indonesia and Egypt are expressing their views and concerns in a public arena. The problem lies within certain geographical locations.  Places such as Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia limit, if not avoid, any participation for women in government.  This is the result of two issues. The first issue is the patriarchal mind-set that traps women in stereotypical female roles and punishes any woman who tries to break out of this mold. The second is the rise of political Islamists who encourage this patriarchal mentality and are wrongly interpreting religion to justify the social and political marginalization of women in the name of Islam. Education Though women are now given various levels of education in a majority of Middle Eastern nations, there are some that completely outlaw any source of education for women.  The Taliban has promoted the oppression of women by banning education for women, often through bombing various schools that have suspected female students.  Sakena Yacoobi recognized this impeding issue and made accessible education her mission. She founded the Afghan Institute of Learning in 1995 as the Taliban was coming to power. She states, “I believe in education. It is such a powerful tool to overcome poverty and rebuild the country. If we took the foreign aid that goes to guns and weapons and just took one quarter of that and put it into education, that would completely transform this country.” This is a problematic ordeal when many women in local areas with heavy involvement of Taliban can’t receive a proper education.  Many families have fled to the U.S. to escape the targeting of women from these regimes. Yacoobi explains, “On behalf of the women and children of Afghanistan, I beg you! If we are to overcome terrorism and violence, we need education. That is the only way we can win.” Female Circumcision The brutality of circumcision is most certainly in need of address.  Mutilation of a woman’s genitalia has been prohibited in many regions in the Middle East but is still widely practiced in Africa, which includes Egypt.  The most recent figures suggest 90% of Egyptian women have suffered Female Genitalia Mutilation [FMG]. Female circumcision is a growing concern for the Human Rights Advocates and is often times lethal to the Egyptian women.   The Muslim Brotherhood’s control and influence in Egypt has sparked a debate over the issue of female circumcision and has been accused of launching a charity campaign for the legalization of circumcision of girls. The Muslim Brotherhood appealed  to the authorities to stop advocating that [FMG] was officially banned in 2007.  Recently, in May of 2012, Al Nour - a member of the second-largest party in the country’s parliament - has urged to renew the practice. Al Nour claims that notable Egyptian scholars justified [FMG] as part of the “prophetic” Sunnah, a holy work of Islam. The politician has previously proposed a bill that would allow the practice, also known as female genital mutilation. Dr. Randa Fakhr El Din of the Cairo Coalition Against Female Gentitalia Mutilation says the harm is unmentionable that has become many Egyptian women through these brutal practices. “Various things can go wrong when amateurs wield the blade - infection, inflammation, giant cysts and injuries which can make it impossible to have a natural childbirth. Women dread the pain of sexual penetration," she explains, "but some girls die before they ever marry. There is an artery close to the clitoris. If the cut goes awry, many girls simply bleed to death." The death of innocent girls and women is something we should not take lightly; this practice is encased with silence and must be publicized and stopped. Nivine Rasmi,  of the local NGO [Non-Government Organization], demonstrates the need for action. Rasmi states, "Of course we fear this new parliament won't tackle issues like FGM because there are extremists who want FGM, unlike the previous regime.  We know that there will be a decline in women’s and children's rights with this new government and parliament." Abuse The overwhelming numbers of sexual assault and physical abuse cases that are glossed over within a majority of Islamic countries has become an epidemic worth halting.  With mass protests spinning around the Arab Revolutions, various women have proclaimed a bold move against the harassment of women, especially in Egypt where groping and verbal harassment is exceptionally common.   A 2008 study of the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights, a non-governmental group, found that 83 percent of Egyptian women reported sexual harassment, and 62 percent of Egyptian men admitted that they had harassed women. “Campaigners in Egypt say the problem of sexual harassment is reaching [wide scale] proportions, with a rise in such incidents over the past three months. For many Egyptian women, sexual harassment - which sometimes turns into violent mob-style attacks - is a daily fact of life”.   Marwa, a teenage hijabi, expresses her growing fear of the harassment she has for herself and women in Egypt, "This is something that scares me, as a girl. When I want to go out, walking the street and someone harasses or annoys me, it makes me afraid.” There is also a concern for women wearing the full hijab [niqab] who are being sexually harassed just as much as non-hijabis.  Statistics say that most of the women or girls who have been sexually harassed have been veiled or completely covered up with the niqab. American female journalists know all too well about this source of harassment which violates women’s rights and should be closely monitored. An overwhelming amount of female journalists and over forty Egyptian female activists and protesters have been attacked in varying degrees of intensity on Tahrir Square. Iran also exhibits the same behaviors against women. For the past 30 years, Iranian women have been harassed, detained, fined, and threatened by the morality police, security forces, and zealots over their appearance. Afghanistan has suffered from moral issues concerning women. Women who survive rape and domestic abuse face both extreme physical and emotional turmoil. For many women in Afghanistan, experiencing this violence and running to escape the chains of abuse means imprisonment.  According to a new report from Human Rights Watch, hundreds of Afghan women have been jailed for 'moral crimes,' like running away from abusive or forced marriages, fleeing after being raped, kidnapped or forced into prostitution. "Domestic violence is a silent tsunami because nobody sees it, but it's taking the life of women. And many women turn to self-immolation or commit suicide or throw themselves in the rivers to escape the situation. It's something we do not see, because it's happening within the families”,  Afghanistan Member of Parliament Fawzia Kofi stated. Aisha, 20-years-old,  was sentenced to three years in prison for running away from a physically abusive man whom her father forced her to marry as a second wife. “I just want a divorce,”  she says. “I can’t go back to my father because he will kill me. All my family has left me behind.” With a husband who beats her and a family who has disowned her, for Aisha there is no returning home. Sadly, Aisha is not alone. So many of the women and younger girls who are imprisoned have nowhere to turn for help or support.   Running away becomes their source of survival.  When they are confined to prison, they must carry out sentences (some as long as ten years) for 'crimes’ they committed to protect and save themselves. Impact of Demographics When Islam spread from Arabia to what we consider the Muslim world today, it spread through countries and societies which had very ancient traditions. Egypt had an ancient tradition; a tradition which embodied a patriarchal stance within Egyptian society. Dalia Mogahed, the strategic analyst of Muslim studies at The Gallup World Poll, said the new data provide fresh insight into the Muslim world.  She states, "In every culture there is a dominant narrative, and in many cases it is constructed by people in power who happen to be men." The Socio-economic status of a person drastically impacts the treatment of women. In Egypt, where jobs are limited for men and often overtaken by women, the only way to equal out the ‘patriarchal system’ consists of degrading women. Women of Afghanistan have experienced similar issues but in a different way. The Taliban has centered their philosophy in the mistreatment of women just as Saudis have upheld their centuries old tradition of “honor killings”. The Arab Mediterranean does not have nearly as many negative effects on Muslim women as compared to the strong Islamic populations with Sharia Law. Bibliography Andrews, Helen. However, the tide is changing and more women in Pakistan, Indonesia and Egypt are expressing their views and concerns in a public arena.\n\nThe problem lies within certain geographical locations.  Places such as Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia limit, if not avoid, any participation for women in government.  This is the result of two issues. The first issue is the patriarchal mind-set that traps women in stereotypical female roles and punishes any woman who tries to break out of this mold. The second is the rise of political Islamists who encourage this patriarchal mentality and are wrongly interpreting religion to justify the social and political marginalization of women in the name of Islam.\n\nEducation\n\nThough women are now given various levels of education in a majority of Middle Eastern nations, there are some that completely outlaw any source of education for women. She states,\n\n“I believe in education. It is such a powerful tool to overcome poverty and rebuild the country. If we took the foreign aid that goes to guns and weapons and just took one quarter of that and put it into education, that would completely transform this country.”\n\nThis is a problematic ordeal when many women in local areas with heavy involvement of Taliban can’t receive a proper education.  Many families have fled to the U.S. to escape the targeting of women from these regimes. Yacoobi explains,\n\n“On behalf of the women and children of Afghanistan, I beg you! If we are to overcome terrorism and violence, we need education. That is the only way we can win.”\n\nFemale Circumcision\n\nThe brutality of circumcision is most certainly in need of address.  Mutilation of a woman’s genitalia has been prohibited in many regions in the Middle East but is still widely practiced in Africa, which includes Egypt.  The most recent figures suggest 90% of Egyptian women have suffered Female Genitalia Mutilation [FMG].\n\nFemale circumcision is a growing concern for the Human Rights Advocates and is often times lethal to the Egyptian women. The politician has previously proposed a bill that would allow the practice, also known as female genital mutilation.\n\nDr. Randa Fakhr El Din of the Cairo Coalition Against Female Gentitalia Mutilation says the harm is unmentionable that has become many Egyptian women through these brutal practices.\n\n“Various things can go wrong when amateurs wield the blade - infection, inflammation, giant cysts and injuries which can make it impossible to have a natural childbirth. Women dread the pain of sexual penetration,\" she explains, \"but some girls die before they ever marry. There is an artery close to the clitoris. If the cut goes awry, many girls simply bleed to death.\"\n\nThe death of innocent girls and women is something we should not take lightly; this practice is encased with silence and must be publicized and stopped. Nivine Rasmi,  of the local NGO [Non-Government Organization], demonstrates the need for action. Rasmi states,\n\n\"Of course we fear this new parliament won't tackle issues like FGM because there are extremists who want FGM, unlike the previous regime.  We know that there will be a decline in women’s and children's rights with this new government and parliament.\"\n\nAbuse\n\nThe overwhelming numbers of sexual assault and physical abuse cases that are glossed over within a majority of Islamic countries has become an epidemic worth halting. Marwa, a teenage hijabi, expresses her growing fear of the harassment she has for herself and women in Egypt,\n\n\"This is something that scares me, as a girl. When I want to go out, walking the street and someone harasses or annoys me, it makes me afraid.”\n\nThere is also a concern for women wearing the full hijab [niqab] who are being sexually harassed just as much as non-hijabis.  Statistics say that most of the women or girls who have been sexually harassed have been veiled or completely covered up with the niqab. American female journalists know all too well about this source of harassment which violates women’s rights and should be closely monitored. An overwhelming amount of female journalists and over forty Egyptian female activists and protesters have been attacked in varying degrees of intensity on Tahrir Square.\n\nIran also exhibits the same behaviors against women. For the past 30 years, Iranian women have been harassed, detained, fined, and threatened by the morality police, security forces, and zealots over their appearance.\n\nAfghanistan has suffered from moral issues concerning women. Women who survive rape and domestic abuse face both extreme physical and emotional turmoil. For many women in Afghanistan, experiencing this violence and running to escape the chains of abuse means imprisonment.  According to a new report from Human Rights Watch, hundreds of Afghan women have been jailed for 'moral crimes,' like running away from abusive or forced marriages, fleeing after being raped, kidnapped or forced into prostitution.\n\n\"Domestic violence is a silent tsunami because nobody sees it, but it's taking the life of women. And many women turn to self-immolation or commit suicide or throw themselves in the rivers to escape the situation. It's something we do not see, because it's happening within the families”,  Afghanistan Member of Parliament Fawzia Kofi stated.\n\nAisha, 20-years-old,  was sentenced to three years in prison for running away from a physically abusive man whom her father forced her to marry as a second wife.\n\n“I just want a divorce,”  she says. “I can’t go back to my father because he will kill me. All my family has left me behind.”\n\nWith a husband who beats her and a family who has disowned her, for Aisha there is no returning home. Sadly, Aisha is not alone. So many of the women and younger girls who are imprisoned have nowhere to turn for help or support.   Running away becomes their source of survival.  When they are confined to prison, they must carry out sentences (some as long as ten years) for 'crimes’ they committed to protect and save themselves.\n\nImpact of Demographics\n\nWhen Islam spread from Arabia to what we consider the Muslim world today, it spread through countries and societies which had very ancient traditions. Egypt had an ancient tradition; a tradition which embodied a patriarchal stance within Egyptian society. Dalia Mogahed, the strategic analyst of Muslim studies at The Gallup World Poll, said the new data provide fresh insight into the Muslim world.  She states,\n\n\"In every culture there is a dominant narrative, and in many cases it is constructed by people in power who happen to be men.\"\n\nThe Socio-economic status of a person drastically impacts the treatment of women. The Arab Mediterranean does not have nearly as many negative effects on Muslim women as compared to the strong Islamic populations with Sharia Law.\n\nBibliography\n\nAndrews, Helen. \"Muslim Women Don't See Themselves as Oppressed, Survey Finds.\"NYTimes.com. My boyfriend won't shut up about crypto currencies and that is how I got on here, not to mention the crypto kitties...so cute!!! Though I do have some coding background I am not nearly as talented as my boyfriend. The last thing I remember coding was making a fucking turkey pop out of the oven as a generated game in visual basic. I'll stick to history and philosophy thank you very much. I also love Mediterranean food. ![fattoush.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfT2YeU9ZtfSnXMvMGaaMcDdvmeorkJ1LaWEjf3nYvND8/fattoush.jpg) If I could, I'd marry pita bread and fattoush. Technically now and days I could because liberals would allow me too. I could probably also identify as pita bread and be respected by SJW's. That's messed up shit. ![pita.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQBMW7bktG9MjgYEfsyJVfWwZ6cnDFjzMymSmLgyAiC9C/pita.jpg)
