| body | I was literally driving around Bali, on the main road which makes a ring around the island. Near the northern tip, around Campuan, I practically wrecked my motorbike while instinctively pulling over when I saw Symon’s Art Zoo. Brightly colored paintings, statues, things dangling from here and there followed my every step as I ascended into the interior open area of this cacophonous carnival of creation. A man, who I would learn was the Symon who had erected this cathedral to his and others’ art, was sitting on a hammock under a veranda inside. I asked him about the place. “Well, you’ve gotta have a palace. It’s good at the end of the night to be able to say ‘let’s go back to the palace.’ So I built a palace.” He gave some instructions to a couple Balinese guys who were moving a two-meter-tall statue of a violet- and crimson-colored penis. They scurried under its weight towards where it was to go. “You see that up there?” He pointed to the second level whose floor, directly above us, was made from rustic wooden planks. “That’s the boardwalk. You know why I did that? Because now I get to hang out all day under the boardwalk. You know, like the song. Isn’t that nice?” It is odd to say that there are pieces of art everywhere (although there are) because the whole place really is one big piece of art. A several-meter-long blue Buddha statue reclines on the front lawn next to a pool which, despite its quirks, could be taken from a house in the Hollywood hills. Paintings adorn most every square foot of wall space, or wherever they can be hung. There are statues at every turn, many with erect, but sometimes just tumescent, phalli of all different colors, shapes and sizes, but all with the same recognizable stamp of artistic authorship. “I bought this place years ago from the rajah. I wanted to create a haven of art here in Bali, something like the East Village in New York, where I’m from. Have a look around.” There are many fascinating places to see on the Island of the Gods, countless temples and sacred springs and galleries. Symon’s Art Zoo stands alongside any of them as the most interesting to visit. Just having a stroll through the grounds is present enough for the trouble of getting there; but bring some cash and support this remarkable project by buying a painting or statue. Bali will be the better if the Art Zoo is there for years to come. |

By the way, it's always a good idea to link to your other page if you copy paste from another blog, to avoid the cheetah comment - some people just see it and think you're a fake, but I guess you are the author of that blogspot blog :) |

| body | I had never really treated myself for my birthday. In fact, throughout my teens and twenties I was usually working on this annual time of reflection and celebration of myself, but towards the end of my 27th year in this incarnation, I decided to do something memorable for once. I had been teaching English in South Korea for a year and had saved up some vacation time, so I bought a ticket to Beijing and planned to hike a section of the Great Wall for the big day. On that special morning, I awoke freezing and gleeful in a dorm at the Sitting on the City Walls guesthouse. It was not yet light out, and I crept into the lobby to wait for my minivan out to the biggest man-made creation on the planet. After about three hours, I and several other travellers arrived at Jinshanling and our guide told us he would wait at the end, at a section called Simatai. It was to be a roughly three-hour trek, depending on our durability. As soon as we were out of the van and on our way to begin walking along the wall, a panoply of 'guides' came rushing along to 'help' us along our way, carry our bags, explain various engineering and historical feats of the brave souls who built the Wall, and collect some money at the end. One middle-aged woman with the dexterity of an Ibex attached herself to me and proved to be cheerful company. The sections of the walkable parts of the Wall are perforated by guard stations that in their time were the brains of this ancient telemetric network, using smoke to signal over thousands of kilometres about news happening at one place or another. The Great Wall stretches out before you like an endless cobbled snake until you cannot see it anymore, climbing ever further over crags and peaks into the misty horizon, never in a straight line. Some areas are nearly impassable and quite scary, and if it weren't for the chipper encouragement of my near-elderly guide, I might have turned back for a Tsingtao in the parking lot. However aerobically exhausting the trek was, I felt an immensity of spirit, leaping from stone to stone and viewing the Wall from each new vestige, coupled with healthy humility and tininess, seeing with my own eyes how vast and long the human experience has been and how hard we have worked to shape the planet in our image. It was both daunting and encouraging. I had a beer with one of the army guys at one of the last stations before Simatai, toasting myself, and him, as well as all the countless people who toiled on that massive structure. At Simatai we sat down to a massive and delectable feast, tired yet enamoured of what we had seen that morning. I was proud of myself for having finally done something on my birthday worth telling about. Now, nearly five years later, the Great Wall of China remains the most impressive manmade thing that I have ever seen in my life. |

| body | Speaking purely from the subjective perspective of a 30-s something western traveler of Southeast Asia, there are several areas I’ve noticed in which we may enact the axiom “when in Rome, do as the Romans do” with far more aplomb. Interactions and Communication Humans communicate in many different ways: with our bodies, words, facial expressions, mannerisms, reactions, and in far more subtle ways. And, people in different parts of the world have their own ways of communication. If you’re in Java, for example, observe how people of all ages act towards one another, their body language, the way they direct their bodies towards one another when talking, and how they stand. Then, try and be like that. In some cultures, it is perfectly normal for two people to have a loud, excited, heated exchange in public; in others, this would be intensely frowned upon. The Backpacker Clothes I do not want to sound preachy here, but after five years running around in Southeast Asia, I still cannot believe the clothes that some people wear when traveling. Westerners can look like the most oafish, unkempt, unwashed, completely uncaring people while travelling. For instance if you go to parts of Vietnam and Cambodia, it is often the local custom for men to wear long-sleeved, button down shirts, often with the sleeves all the way down. This goes for everyone, even motorbike drivers. And shorts are unheard of. So when I got to Hanoi, I looked at my cut off military cargoes and tank top, and all the guys around me wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and decided it was time for a change. Why? Respect, I think. When you are in someone else’s country for a sojourn longer than a fortnight, it behooves you to attempt something akin to the local attire. So, I felt cheesy as hell buying some pair of brown pants and a short sleeved, button down shirt, but started to look more the part. And it felt good. And I quickly took to them. Girls backpacking in Southeast Asia need to take this on board, as well: try dressing a little like the women around you, when possible. In deeply conservative Laos, for example, where women rarely show their shoulders, you should opt for something more modest than a pair of daisy-dukes and a huge, long-pitted Fool Moon Party tank top which clearly shows your florescent body-painted tits underneath. |

| body | I was at the farm a few more days before getting down to the last allowed by my visa. Wresting myself from its bucolic environs, I hitched up to Luang Prabang. I would remaining three days of my Laos visa there. .jpg) Luang Prabang is known as one of the most spiritual places in Southeast Asia. Many would say the world, and for good reason. There are Buddhist temples everywhere, and one of its most iconic images is the early morning procession of monks through the center of town to receive alms and rice from villagers, chanting hypnotic blessings upon them. It is these elements of the very traditional and very Buddhist Laotian culture which bring people to Luang Prabang, and however this may affect it in the future, its vibration must evoke appreciation from even the most foam-mouthed atheist. It is arrestingly peaceful. I wasn’t in the most peaceful of inner straits, however. Several different things had happened which had creates a perfect=enough storm within me, that I had spiralled into a fairrly heavy existential funk. At the bottom of it all was the fact that I did not want to go back to America. After the way of living that I had witnessed over that past year rambling around Southeast Asia, it seemed like the States were a death trap for my soul, that if I returned to reside there I would be miserable beyond repair. It may sound hyperbolic, but I couldn’t help it. The problem was that I was close to running out of money, and it was getting easier to smother the sharper edges of these fears in Tiger Whiskey, only to wake up to more of them in the morning. I would walk along the markets and the river, contemplating how I could return to my native country, how I could perhaps work in another restaurant, another bar, another office. It didn’t seem to be very evolutionary. I wanted heaven and hell, not 9 to 5. I would spend the afternoons in a small used bookstore called L’estranger, which would allow me to sit and read books all day on their front porch. In the evenings I would find the smaller side streets, away from the tourist throng, sipping Beerlaos on the front steps of living room-cum-convenience stores. The environment around me was so bright, so life-affirming, so radiant. I tried to suck as much of it up as I could, to mimic that presence, but internally I was torn and smothered in grief and the worst kinds of uncertainty. I felt myself far out to sea with no boat, no harbor, no lights, nothing. And I felt a sadness of oceanic proportions that the people I love the most couldn’t be with me. I decided that to save some cash, I would just kind of very politely trespass, and sleep at one of the many temples in the town. I found one back away from the main roads, crept up the steps at the entrance, and fell asleep easily, my head on my bag, trying to absorb a little of my enlightened surroundings as I slumbered off. I woke up at dawn. It was strange at first, but I came to appreciate the fact that about a dozen stray dogs had gathered in a circle around me while I had slept. It made me feel like a very loved and protected bum. I looked around and a monk who was sweeping nearby smiled at me, put down his broom, disappeared inside, and came out with a small cushion for me. These small actions; the dogs keeping me company while I slept, the monk, going to get something for me to put my head on, coalesced within me as an almost unbearable kindness. It was probably the perpetually-intoxicated sadness I had been stewing in for days, but I almost started crying. I got up, put my backpack on, and bowed to the monk, who had resumed sweeping, stooped over, one hand behind his back. I wanted to stay and join him. Unfortunately, my visa was up in a matter of hours. We smiled at one another, I patted the dogs on the head, and slowly descended back to the street. I got a bus to northern Thailand. I figured I had a couple weeks there to figure out what the hell I was going to do with my life. |

"body": "I was at the farm a few more days before getting down to the last allowed by my visa. Wresting myself from its bucolic environs, I hitched up to Luang Prabang. I would remaining three days of my Laos visa there.\n\n.jpg)\n\nLuang Prabang is known as one of the most spiritual places in Southeast Asia. It is arrestingly peaceful.\n\nI wasn’t in the most peaceful of inner straits, however. It may sound hyperbolic, but I couldn’t help it.\n\nThe problem was that I was close to running out of money, and it was getting easier to smother the sharper edges of these fears in Tiger Whiskey, only to wake up to more of them in the morning.\n\nI would walk along the markets and the river, contemplating how I could return to my native country, how I could perhaps work in another restaurant, another bar, another office. | body | It was a more or less clear day on the island of Gili Trawangan as my girlfriend and I enjoyed our English breakfast on the beach and waited for our boat to begin to take passengers. We were heading off to the island of Nusa Lembongan, whose cultural affiliations lie with its nearby Bali whereas the Gilis are tied to Lombok. We’d had a marvelous time on Trawangan, doing little more than shuffling about from guesthouse to bar to beach chair and back, jumping out of the way of horse-drawn carts (there are no motorized vehicles in the Gilis) and eating more prawns than we’d ever know how to catch. We were waved towards an arriving boat, paid our check, and ecstatically presented our ticket to the man taking care of the boat business. Two of our dear friends were meeting us in Lembongan with two of their friends we’d never met and we were looking forward excitedly to three or four days of much mirth. We claimed our little hard plastic bench towards the back of the boat and grinned at one another, stoked to be on another boat, glowing. The motor started up and off we were. Something bizarre and unexpected then happened. What had looked like a serene sea while we were eating breakfast on the beach had become progressively worse until we were deep in the nightmarish tumult of an incensed sea-demon’s rage. While rocking violently, the bottom of the boat was smacking the water every time it came back down from going over a swell. There was so much water being sprayed against the windows that it was impossible to see out. Our fellow passengers looked increasingly terrified, and although I usually have quite a bit of good natured faith in these things, I began looking about for something to smash the window beside us in case the boat flipped. And then, people began to wretch. Soon a girl who worked for the boat company was walking around with an armful of thin, black, plastic bags for everyone, some grabbing at them quickly, desperately. The smell of vomit began to permeate the cabin. I couldn’t look at anyone who was about to vomit, in the process of vomiting, or had just vomited because then I would have vomited. My girlfriend was clutching my arm like a vice and I almost got up so we could stand near the edge in case the thing flipped. I thought about all the times I’d read about these kinds of boats, specifically in Indonesia, capsizing, sinking, or catching fire. I was getting ready for the big one. Someone missed their bag and vomit went all over the floor of the aisle near my foot. The boat boomed as it crashed back down to the water after going over a wave. Children screamed. A woman began crying. I thought of how many months had gone by since I’d spoken to my family, and the dreams I had of being old and happy with my girlfriend. Someone else ralphed just behind me. The air was thick with terror and barf and grief. And then, as automatically as it had started, the waves had calmed, the tempest had subsided, sea water stopped spraying against the windows, and the sun seemed to come out. We could see our destination, and it was comfortingly close, probably enough to swim. The barf bag lady came around to collect them, disgustingly, in a large cardboard box, and tried to comfort us by saying “today not bad. Last week bad.” |

| body | With the exception perhaps of the recently departed Nelson Mandela, there are no other political leaders in modern history I can think of who command as much auspice and importance to a country as Ho Chi Minh does to Vietnam. Ho dedicated his entire life to the independence of his country, from the early days of its first battle with French colonizers, to the Japanese, to the French again and finally to the Americans. Ho Chi Minh died in 1969 at the age of 79, only a handful of years before the last US soldiers would leave and Vietnam would be united again under one flag. He is interred at Hanoi’s Bao Dinh Square, the site where in September 1945 he proclaimed Vietnam’s independence after the Japanese were defeated in World War II. It is a fitting place for his mausoleum, although it is odd that he was embalmed and put on display. If I remember correctly, his desire was to be cremated, his ashes spread among several different mountains sacred to the Vietnamese. He said that way he could fertilize the soil of his beloved home. Instead, he joined the ranks of Lenin and later Mao as embalmed Communist leaders. The monument is gorgeous, a giant stone cube sitting atop the steps of the massive public square. Guards with bayonets keep vigil over the doors while the Vietnamese, most dressed in their Sunday best, solemnly file through in line and into the front doors. Once inside, it is, well . . . as quiet as a mausoleum. I was asked by a guard to take my hands from my pockets. In an unfortunate and wholly accidental lack of cultural diplomacy, I was so wrapped up waiting to see Uncle Ho’s face that I distractedly kept putting my hands into my pockets and the poor guard had to keep reminding me to take them back out again. It was an otherworldly experience. I remember being able to hear the air-conditioning very well, and the sound of the penny loafers of the old man in front me scooting along the carpet. That great hero of national self-determination finally came into site and looked . . . really old . . . and really dead. The strangeness of the experience was somewhat spoiled by my students telling me later that evening that they didn’t really think it was his actual body in the case at Bao Dinh Square but a wax replica. Either way, Ho Chi Minh towers above the drooling, dithering, disappointing leaders of today, and it is with a great affinity and abiding reverence that I remember visiting his mausoleum (even if it was a wax replica inside that case). |

"body": "With the exception perhaps of the recently departed Nelson Mandela, there are no other political leaders in modern history I can think of who command as much auspice and importance to a country as Ho Chi Minh does to Vietnam.\n\n\n\nHo dedicated his entire life to the independence of his country, from the early days of its first battle with French colonizers, to the Japanese, to the French again and finally to the Americans.\n\nHo Chi Minh died in 1969 at the age of 79, only a handful of years before the last US soldiers would leave and Vietnam would be united again under one flag.\n\nHe is interred at Hanoi’s Bao Dinh Square, the site where in September 1945 he proclaimed Vietnam’s independence after the Japanese were defeated in World War II. It is a fitting place for his mausoleum, although it is odd that he was embalmed and put on display.\n\nIf I remember correctly, his desire was to be cremated, his ashes spread among several different mountains sacred to the Vietnamese. He said that way he could fertilize the soil of his beloved home. Instead, he joined the ranks of Lenin and later Mao as embalmed Communist leaders.\n\nThe monument is gorgeous, a giant stone cube sitting atop the steps of the massive public square. Guards with bayonets keep vigil over the doors while the Vietnamese, most dressed in their Sunday best, solemnly file through in line and into the front doors.\n\nOnce inside, it is, well . . . as quiet as a mausoleum. \n\nIt was an otherworldly experience. I remember being able to hear the air-conditioning very well, and the sound of the penny loafers of the old man in front me scooting along the carpet. That great hero of national self-determination finally came into site and looked . . . really old . . . and really dead.\n\nThe strangeness of the experience was somewhat spoiled by my students telling me later that evening that they didn’t really think it was his actual body in the case at Bao Dinh Square but a wax replica. \n\nEither way, Ho Chi Minh towers above the drooling, dithering, disappointing leaders of today, and it is with a great affinity and abiding reverence that I remember visiting his mausoleum (even if it was a wax replica inside that case).",

| body | Bali has historically been known as a picture-perfect postcard island ever since Westerners began strolling over its pristine beaches nearly a century ago. To a large extent this reputation is well earned- Bali has some of the most gorgeous coastlines, mountains and jungles anywhere in the world. Couple the island’s natural beauty with a unique, prosaic, artistic and highly stylized culture and aesthetic and what you have is the stuff of touristic dreams. However, beginning in the 1970s surfers and backpackers began showing up in the southern part of the island around Kuta, an area which quickly began to cater to its western patrons in any way possible. Kuta’s unchecked growth over the past several decades has formed its present reputation as the island’s drunken, raucous eyesore region which clogs the southern part of the island with black fume-spewing traffic and mountains of garbage which have caused serious issues of water scarcity for the rest of Bali. Walking along Jalan Legian, Kuta’s main thoroughfare, one sees endless selections of the same awful souvenir shops featuring products seemingly meant for 18 year-old, emotionally infantile males and countless western fast food restaurants. The charming and iconic traditional architecture of Bali is not to be found; the area rather looks like it could be a city in southern California or anywhere else in the world, really. From dusk until dawn, humongous, easily-upset drunken louts carouse in the streets with bottles of beer as if on the prowl for someone to maim or kill. Scantily clad women stumble about looking for places to vomit, still working to fulfill their damned dreams of a vacation worth talking about. In short, Kuta is nowhere near what Bali is traditionally but is exactly what the western tourists who pour into the area want it to be: their home, but cheaper and (they assume) a place where it is easier to get away with morally dubious behavior. However, it is odd that this is many tourists’ popular image of Bali when Kuta is actually just a small, irritating part of the island. The rest of Bali is relatively untouched by the degradation that has been inflicted upon its southern extremities. There are still beach towns in Bali that one might suppose are stuck in the 1930s, having one or two small cafes, just a few beach bungalows and miles upon miles of pristine beaches lined with coral. In central Bali, the (growing) village of Ubud has smartly maintained its traditional Balinese architecture with nary a McDonald’s to be found. The refined and sophisticated Balinese forms of dance, carving and textile design are everywhere to be found, and despite the high amount of tourist buses passing through, one gets the feeling that Ubud will keep its unique flavor for decades to come. It is odd that such a small island can host such different identities; one as a rowdy, moronic pleasure island for western vacationers and the other as a spiritual and naturalistic oasis of beauty. But Bali presents both. Hopefully the latter will prevail and Kentucky Fried Chicken and nightclub foam parties will someday be driven from the island for good. |

| body | Beijing offers countless engaging sights for those interested in history, culture and art. Less often mentioned are the many amazing contemporary destinations in the city which beckon to travelers. When I first went to Beijing several years ago, I spent my birthday at the Great Wall, gleefully read every informational plaque at the Temple of Heaven and rubber-necked nearly every exhibit at the Forbidden City. I spent afternoons strolling through the countless mazes of historic hutong and tried (mostly in vain) to learn the chronology of the Chinese dynasties during breaks over steaming dumplings and Tsingtaos. Needless to say, I was filled to the brim with trivia about this extremely historical place, and it was with unexpected delight that I stumbled upon the vibrant and contemporary sights and sounds of the Houhai area’s lakes, bars, restaurants and shops just a few kilometers from the heart of old Beijing. Houhai is an area that has become increasingly popular in the last decade as the amount of visitors to Beijing has swelled, especially in the wake of the 2008 Olympics. With gently curving stone walkways surrounding several large lakes and small arching bridges moving pedestrians from one side to the other, Houhai is one of the nicest places in which to “take a walk” that I have ever been. Eat, drink, shop and stroll There are flashy, modern restaurants and coffee shops as well as tiny hole-in-the-wall pubs and tea shops. One particular establishment that I spent many nights in was the comfortable and fun Reggae Bar, which, in spite of the name, featured an exceptional band comprised of nylon-stringed Latin guitars and hand drums. It was the most impressive live music I ever experienced in Asia (besides a Balinese gamelan orchestra). There is also a wealth of artistic and unique boutiques lining Houhai’s grey cobblestone walkways in which one can find interesting gifts for friends. I purchased some modern art prints there which now hang on my wall as I write. The ambience of Houhai, whether in the spring as the trees that line the banks of the lakes are in bloom or in the winter when they are frozen over, is abundant with charm. An evening stroll around Houhai complemented with dinner and a few beverages at one of its many memorable cafes is the perfect complement to a day spent ogling Beijing’s countless historical treasures. |

One particular establishment that I spent many nights in was the comfortable and fun Reggae Bar, which, in spite of the name, featured an exceptional band comprised of nylon-stringed Latin guitars and hand drums.\nIt was the most impressive live music I ever experienced in Asia (besides a Balinese gamelan orchestra).\n\nThere is also a wealth of artistic and unique boutiques lining Houhai’s grey cobblestone walkways in which one can find interesting gifts for friends. I purchased some modern art prints there which now hang on my wall as I write.\n\nThe ambience of Houhai, whether in the spring as the trees that line the banks of the lakes are in bloom or in the winter when they are frozen over, is abundant with charm. An evening stroll around Houhai complemented with dinner and a few beverages at one of its many memorable cafes is the perfect complement to a day spent ogling Beijing’s countless historical treasures.",
