      "body": "I'm excited to announce a special guest to help answer the question of whether anti-pollution masks are effective at filtering unhealthy air. My guest is completely neutral, and has been the lead researcher (and test subject) on one of the most comprehensive pollution mask studies to date. The intake valve was attached to an aluminum tube fixed to a grill top. The mask contains a disposable PM2.5 filter manufactured to N95 specifications. (PM2.5 is a type of particulate matter most often associated with pollutants like wildfire smoke, vehicle exhaust, fertilizers and even everyday dust.) The left-hand scores on the chart below show the ambient PM2.5 we detected in the control chamber, before the air was pulled through the pollution-mask worn by our dummy. The middle scores show the concentration of PM2.5 after filtration. Considering that the EPA rates PM2.5 concentrations of 100 ug/m3 as “Unhealthy”, whereas a concentration of 10 ug/m3 is “good”, 90% filtration is going to be more than enough for most levels of outdoor pollution. It’s important to remember that we’re not talking about certifying these masks for industrial use, and a pollution mask isn’t going to turn you into Tony Stark, but as long as your mask is well fitted, and the filter is at least an N95 equivalent, our experiment supported their effectiveness for outdoor use on high-pollution days.\n\nCheck out the full video here:\nhttps://youtu.be/rBnFcHKspkU",

I do love the icon, but I'm talking about a different kind of calculator.\n\nI design calculator apps that take simple inputs, run them through a series of advanced algorithms, and produce simple outputs. If I think about it, my calculators are almost the opposite of the TI-83 pictured above, which generally required complicated inputs and produced even more complicated outputs. Helpful for passing high school geometry, not so much for producing web apps.\n\nMy mantra is that a content provider should be able to make advanced topics accessible by asking a series of simple questions and providing equally simple answers (cue Socrates).  The endless array of subtle assumptions and complex thinking required to get from point A to point B exists behind the scenes.\n\nhttp://site.mayaincaaztec.com/PictureLinks/socrates386562web.jpg\n\nMost recently, I created a [calculator for a pollution mask website that tells you which filter and mask combinations will be effective at filtering pollution across a range of different air qualities](https://www.purakamasks.com/how-well-do-pollution-masks-remove-harmful-particulates-from-the-air). First, you don't want your user to get bored, or worse, overwhelmed and frustrated. Second, after doing the research, I realized that fit and filter are the only two things you really **need** to worry about. I do love the logo, but I'm talking about a different kind of calculator.\n\nI design calculator apps that take simple inputs, run them through a series of advanced algorithms, and produce simple outputs. If I think about it, my calculators are almost the opposite of the TI-83 pictured above, which generally required complicated inputs and produced even more complicated outputs. Helpful for passing high school geometry, not so much for producing web apps.\n\nMy mantra is that a content provider should be able to make advanced topics accessible by asking a series of simple questions and providing equally simple answers.  The endless array of subtle assumptions and complex thinking required to get from point A to point B exist behind the scenes.\n\nMost recently, I created a calculator for a pollution mask website that tells you which filter and mask combinations will be effective at filtering pollution across a range of different air qualities. The user, who presumably is someone concerned about protecting their child's lungs, simply selects one of three filters (N95, N99 or P100) and one of  four fits (\"sealed\", \"fitted\", etc.).\n\nI purposefully minimized the inputs for two reasons. First, you don't want your user to get bored, or worse, overwhelmed and frustrated. Second, after reading half a dozen studies on particulate filtering and pollution mask effectiveness, I realized that fit and filter are the only two things you really need to worry about. I could have added additional questions in order to be more \"engaging\", but ultimately asking unnecessary questions is more likely to have the opposite effect.\n\nOnce the user has provided the calculator inputs, the calculator outputs appear in real time, using simple, color-coded visualizations of a smoke cloud and lungs. If the fit and filter combination worked, the lungs are blue. If they didn't work, the lungs turn the same sickly gray or green as the smoke. The message is clear, even if the calculations required to produce the output took three headache-inducing days to arrange.\n\nWhen you think about your own users, what kinds of questions can you ask and answer in order to make complexity look simple? Blockchain technology is a great example, and can actually integrate into calculators quite well. Quick detour (bear with me), but imagine what you could do if every user's unique profile of questions and answers was encoded into an individualized blockchain? The insights you'd gain about the way that person thought, and what they thought about, would make Facebook's marketing algorithms look like they were programmed by a 6th grader.\n\nAnyways, back to my question. When you think about your own unique offering or skillset, what do you need to know about your customers to create a delicious simplicity sandwich that lets you show off your brilliance and talents without making things overly complicated?  If you can find the right questions, and provide answers that are simple on the surface but stunningly complex underneath it, you'll be able to calculate just about anything.",

      "body": "Why do cops and security guards wear bulletproof vests, but leave their heads exposed?  This is a common question, made famous by the classic American comedy Dumb & Dumber\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZVcjXTMRLaQGY9cMvCbtBowpb5ogorUDnbfs9YfkWEwk/image.png)\n\nA commonly-cited answer is “the head is a smaller target”, but I’m not sure this is the best argument if you look at the data. A 2015 study from the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery found that fatalities of mass shooter attacks were equally likely (29%) to be struck in their heads as they were in the upper torso. In fact, when you aggregate the areas where bulletproof vests cover you, the likelihood of getting fatally shot in a protected area (43%) outside of combat is significantly less than getting shot in an unprotected area (58%) (some overlap due to multiple injury cases).\n\nThe best argument for wearing bulletproof vests is not necessarily that they protect you where you’re most likely to be shot and killed. It’s that they give you a significantly better chance of surviving a gunshot wound than not wearing a bulletproof vest. That's why bulletproof vests - even discrete ones like the CoverMe-Seat - can actually save your life, even if you don't walk around carrying a bulletproof helmet.",
